Andoran - Artwork - Is it just me?

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Sovereign Court

Do all the Andoran's have Microcephaly or is it just that guy in the uniform?

Oh man. THis is the third thread about that guy.

Small head. Small d*#k.

Hey, man. That "small duck" comment is out of bounds and out of the scope of the illustration. He could have any number of ducks of any size; we don't know. Maybe ducks are all enormous in Andoran. And I don't think duck is spelled with weird symbols like that.

Sovereign Court

Do Andoran ducks shrink in the cold?

This artist needs some serious critques. C'mon - human proportion is first symester art school stuff.

Liberty's Edge

Yeah, he's got a tiny head. That's still a cool uniform. I'd play one of those dudes.

Silver Crusade

Does he have a tiny head?

Or is it just that he has a huge body?

Giants and humans can interbreed. Surely a society such as Andoran would be accepting of their offspring. They would be valuable additions to the military.

I accept my No-Prizes in printed and electronic form, Paizo staff.

You joke, but that is about right for the proportions of a half-giant. Yeef. Half-giants are BAD news, too. Powerful build, strength bonus, stomp ability, no penalties to mental stats. The only thing scarier than a freight train barreling towards you is a SMART freight train barreling towards you.

He's a very tall body builder. The head looks even smaler, because you're looking up to him. ^^

He's an Eagle Knight and he's here to PUMP

*wait for it*

Dark Archive

Yes, this is the third thread about this guy and I really can't understand why Paizo uses this picture again and again. It's done really well, but the dispropotion is a serious error. There is so much great art in the PFs and modules, so why does a flawed piece like this show up again and again? It kinda ruined the backcover of the Gaz for me, because everyone that looked at my copy (even non-roleplayers) mentioned how wrong it looks and how bad it's done. And what's most sad is the fact, that it's really well done besides the disproportion. Why not resize the head using Photoshop or something?

*clap* YOU UP!

Sorry, couldn't stand the anticipation any longer!

Some people just have small heads, not that big a deal. Maybe we’re just too used to all the characters looking like they have a killer HMO with dental and vision. While we’re nitpicking the blog, what’s up with the usage for Haruspex (entrail readers)?

Difficult to guesstimate what kind of duck he's got with that big overcompensating sword in the way.

*Not that I was looking*

Maybe he's related to this guy -

Zoid the Pinhead Barbarian

But if you insist on a more normal version, I modded the original a bit -

EagleKnight with an ego boost

The head was easy... reworking the collar was the tricky part.

His shoulders still make him look a little 'wishy-washy' though.

Dark Archive

Good job, Marcus!
Now it looks perfect! :)

I know that guy. He was doing commercials for OS/2 back when that was released.

As far as I know, they're known as "ogres" on Golarion. (I think that's from Classic Monsters Revisited)

Oh my god, it's Blaine the Mono! Quick, someone ask it why the baby crossed the road!

Nice job on the rework! I would use that as a PC pic now.

"Wack a Mole", anyone? :D

I was going to put him in a scene with some giant ducks, but thought better of it.

Besides, I couldn't find any decent pics of Howard the Duck, Duck Dodgers, and Scrooge McDuck to make it worthwhile.

Howard

Dodgers

Scrooge

The only one that may have worked was Scrooge - the other two wouldn't have fit with the Eagleknight's art.

Thats what Pathfiner/Golarion is missing! Giant Anthropomorphic Ducks!

The art looks good. The figure's great. the uniform is cool and memorable.

The artist clearly made the head small as design choice, not because of a lack of skill. And it's a good choice. It makes the Andoran guy's body look larger without having a background to compare it to.

I don't know who the artist is, but I hope Paizo throws more work his way in the future.

I couldn't help it - I had to fix that head. Yea, he looks a little stocky now, but those giant hands suggest a shorter build. And while I was at it, I thinned down the anime sword and filled out the calves a bit so this guy didn't drop like Eight Belles after the finish line.

I was thinking it was drawn by an artist who seems to like trying to sneak in japanese manga style art in a US company's fantasy setting.

No need to sneak it in. Paizo's been really open to various "manga-esque" styles for a long time now.

Sorry, but this doesn't make sense to me. I can't understand how messing up the proportions can be a good design choice. His hands are as big as his head. It makes him look like a freak. I agree that the picture is otherwise done really, really well. The uniform is great and I like the artist's style too, but this head-thing just went wrong... The lack of a background doesn't justify this choice, if it was done with intent. You don't need a background or mess with the porportions to make him look strong, as you can clearly see in the illustrations of the iconics without any background in the alpha rules.

Scarab Sages

I am but I, but I totally dug the Andoran art. It's art, fer chrissake's. If you want to discuss proportions, check out Michelangelo's David, and then talk to me about proportion. If you can convey what you're shooting for better with imperfect proportions, more power to you.

I believe said artist, Andrew Hou, is Korean, so it would make sense that his art style would reflect the influences that he most likely grew up with: manga, or most likely manhwa in this instance. Both art styles, like American comic books, have exaggerated proportions.

Because it was stapled to the chicken!

At least I think that's how it went.

Contrary to popular myth, whale penes do not have their own brains.

Liberty's Edge

Truth be told, I thought the Eagle Knight picture was pretty cool. Kinda reminds me of the art from Final Fantasy Tactics, which was also stylistic in a specific way.
