I wanna say the Acadamae uniforms pictured in the Guide to Korvosa are awesome. Nothing like school uniforms combined with fantasy elements to get me thinking of anime! The Acadamae seems a bit like Hogwarts... I'd describe it as "Hogwarts with a lot more devil-summoning and a lot less ice cream."
What's the weird half-cape thing that they have? I've just been calling it a half-cape. Does it have a more proper name? I kept thinking the black dude (a Shoanti?) in the one pic was wearing a skirt, until I realized all the uniforms have those capes.
Any chance that Senior GMs of the Pathfinder Society could get uniforms like that to wear at cons? Would definitely make a statement!

Oh boy, I get to talk about the Acadamae and its spiffy uniforms now. :D
When James handed me the Korvosa assignment he told me the Acadamae was basically a LE devil-binding Hogwarts. That's all the design direction I got for that section. Obviously, I think, it was enough. I'd love to do an entire book just on the Acadamae, or maybe write an adventure set there some day, but it's probably for the best that I don't make those kinds of decisions. ;)
Anyway! The half-cape is pretty much just that. It can be a cape or a cloak, depending on the weather (cloaks in winter, capes in summer). And yes, the uniform is very much based on Japanese school uniforms (themselves based on 19th-century British and Prussian school uniforms), and yes, I am a huge anime fan. I think the gnome Acadamae student on page 53 points out my heavy anime influences. (Also, after that picture Sarah banned me from including pigtails in art orders ever again. *sob*)
When I first wrote the art order for the uniform (which was about 400 words long) I showed it to my girlfriend to make sure it wasn't TOO crazy. It was. So I toned back my initial description to the one shown here.
Oh, and also note that the Order of the Nail Hellknight in Guide to Korvosa also has a cloak draped over one arm. That was intentional. I totally dig the cloak-over-one-arm look. :)

I would love to see people cosplay like Acadamae students. OMG, that would rock! :D

Does that mean all the students have access to magical knickers, and skirts that are constantly in an updraft?
I know Paizo is famous for its customer service, but fan service is another thing entirely!

Maybe you should just write it up and leave it laying around on James' desk. "Hey, what's this?! Let's print it!"

*flips through his Korvosa*
Oh, yeah! That one! It wasn't the pigtails that bothered me...more the gnome wielding an otherworldly being on a stick. (I assumed she was a gnome before you confirmed it. She could also have just been 13.)

See? Staff your next booth at a con with hot female GMs in Acadamae uniforms and watch Pathfinder books fly off shelves!
That said, I sort of wish the school was a little more like Hogwarts and not so blatantly Lawful Evil. If I want to run adventures there, my PCs are either infiltrators or extremely unpopular students. Or I'm running an Evil campaign, which is a different beast entirely.

My friend, for the bold strides toward fan service I employ in art orders, allow me to point you toward the Adventurer Class Act in Dragon #359. ;)

lol, Don't tempt me! :D Maybe once I finish PF14... ;)

It was supposed to just be an elaborate staff, but it turned into something much more. ;D
Well it is a school, so she could have been 13. But no, she's a gnome. She's probably in her early to mid 20s.
Mmm...yeah...more pigtails please!!
You'll need to convince Sarah on that count. :D
I'd love an Acadamae uniform, screw general cosplay I'd want to wear it as often as possible - pigtails and all! So cool :)
Yay! Glad you like it. ^_^
Now then... want to try to convince my girlfriend that she should also wear that uniform? ;D You know, woman to woman. ;)

Oh, and here's a little fun fact:
The colors of the Acadamae are black, crimson, and silver. Black and crimson for its ties to Cheliax. Crimson and silver because those are the colors of my alma mater.

Maybe it can get a write up for a future Pathfinder companion. One that focuses on Wizard schools or something. Give each major school a 2-4 page write up. I would find a book like that very interesting. Not to mention I do like the school.
A player of mine is big into Harry Potter and has been bugging me to do a Wizard school game.

I liked them actually. I wouldn't mind at all to see more art like that.

"You've got anime in my Harry Potter!"
"No! You've got Harry Potter in my anime!"
Two great things that go great together....?LOL!
I'll admit that I don't get the anime schoolgirl appeal (although knowing the school uniform historical origins does make it fit moreso) - maybe it's those years teaching at private schools.
Overall the idea is pretty cool, and thanks for the insight on how it came about, Mike. Also, thanks for the clarification that it's a gnome...I honestly was thinking: "Dang! They train 'em young at the Academae! - is that legal?" ;-))
Now as for Kayos' and her costume...I think photos are in order, please...everyone agree? (kidding ;-))

She is a gnome, but yeah, the Acadamae does train 'em young. In my mind, most students start at the Acadamae when still in the single digit years. It takes a long time to learn how to bend reality to your whim (f&~@ing sorcerers notwithstanding). :)

Hey now! If we're going to have any fan service it better start with Seoni... then we can move on top the japanese school girls in Academae. :)

Mike, nevertheless you’ve really brought together the essence of private boarding school in the Acadamae uniforms. Trust me from firsthand experience living (and surviving) British boarding school! :-P An idea that I’ve implemented into my group is something I’ve brought forward from that personal experience: differing ties worn by differing schools/houses. Also, depending on your personal rank therein, or within the school as a whole; a variety of ties can be (proverbially) won. e.g.:
Standard Entrance Tie {also called “Grov” Colours – as in “groveller – someone who grovels”};
Prefect’s Grov {each Prefect “may” select one grov as their personal runner boy – often a way to survive the first years of school – despite being made to do wicked, immoral, and embarrassingly disgusting things (sit on the toilet in the winter months to keep the rim warm before the prefect decides to go);
House/Hall Colours (for something done exceptional for the house);
School Colours (for something done exceptional for the school as a whole);
Prefect;
Head-Prefect;
etc.
Similarly, as a distinguishing factor from currently enrolled students, graduate rings can be bought => possibly leaning into the game mechanics of an object of arcane bond.(?)
If you do end up scribing the book on the Acadamae; take a quick peek through AD&D (2nd ed.) Complete Necromancer ... pricelessly classic & might come in handy for route through which to “flesh” out The Hall of Whispers ... and therein, similarly for other schools/halls.

Watching all those Harry Potter movies over and over and over and over really paid off! :D
Thanks for the fascinating insights, Lanval. I'll keep that all in mind if ever get to do a magic school book. :)
