I Love the Power Increase for PC's in the Alpha Release, A Thread Where Those Who Like The Changes can Voice Their Support....

Alpha Playtest Feedback General Discussion

Dark Archive

Since there was a thread floating around for those who think the power increase for the PC classes in the Alpha release are unbalancing, I wanted to start a thread for those who like the change so that both sides of the argument can be heard.

I LOVE what you have done with the PC core classes. It is in many ways what 4th edition should have been for that other company. An evolution, not a revolution. I think the extra Armor and Weapon abilities for fighters are incredible. I also love the suite of powers you have dedicated to each specialist wizard and the generalist wizards. I also think your take on domains for Clerics is a nice improvement on what already exists. I haven't finished reading the alpha release in its entirety, but I love what I see so far.

When the fourth edition announcement was made, I wasn't upset that they wanted to update the rules. In fact I thought many aspects of the game needed some fine tuning. What I didn't like was how they scrapped everything that was working and basically started from scratch while stomping mud all over 30 years of tradition in the process. The alpha represents what I felt should have happened at WotC. Essentially an open playtest with their design ideas, followed by a few months of playtest feedback, followed by a beta release, several more months of playtesting and feedback, and then a finished product. If they had done that, I guarantee the acrimony over 4th edition wouldn't be close to what it has been. Anyway, that is a digression....

Great job on the alpha, and as I get a little more time to delve into it more deeply, I will try to leave feedback more constructive than just I LOVE IT!!!!! That said... I LOVE IT!!!! I hope others will use this thread to express the same.

I, too, like the increase in power to the PC classes. I can see this as a means to reduce magic item dependency that we find so rampant in 3.0 and 3.5... at least, I'm hoping that's where this design decision is taking us.

Give the power to the characters, not how much magical crap they can lug around.

I agree completely. I had no objection to the *idea* of 4th edition...just the execution. From the look of things, the Pathfinder RPG is what 4th edition should have been.

I like the changes that are being considered by Paizo. I'm convinced that they have more reverence for the game, its traditions and its fans than that other company has ever had. And with the Alpha Playtest, it shows.

It's not going to work unless people are limited in the amount of magic they carry. I haven't noticed any such limitation.....

It's called "The DM."

I also really like the new approach to the base classes

Ha! Thank you so much for stating that.

I hate doling out magic items and love characters that can stand their own even if they're 'naked'. I'd also love to hand out magical weapons that don't have to have at least a '+1' added to them. What's wrong with simply having a 'Fiery Flamberge'? Absolutely nothing with the classes as presented in the Pathfinder RPG.

Alright, Im one of those "been playing DnD for decades" guys. I've played every version. 3e was ground breaking, and I fell in love with the game all over again, bought all the books {and I mean all of them} and settled in for life. Then they announced 4e, and closed the doors to outside sources. I know we play an evolving game, but that's just rude. Of course, I'll still participate. I like collecting all the editions, but when my friend told me what our good pals at Paizo were doing with the PRPG, I felt relieved. Now that I've read the Alpha 1 PDF, I have to have more!
I too love what's been done with the core classes {though it still needs a little tweaking} and absolutely cannot wait for more. I'm presently running the Savage Tide path and intend to start experimenting immediately, and will fully endorse this truly fantastic endeavor. Thank you Paizo, you heart's in the right place!

Actually that isn't accurate. The GSL sounds to be more closed than the OGL (specifically alternate PHB books like Arcana Evolved sound like they've been ruled out), but they have yet to say that there will be no GSL. To date, things are delayed farther than intended, but no definitive answer exists.

The class changes look fine, I just question the whole backwards compatibility and wonder how much extra work to use 3.5 modules w/PRPG books we will see in the end. I do like the picture of the Rogue doubling as a pin cushion tho ;)

gonna say I love the bump as Dm I am stingy with magic I even limit what you can buy ..no magic marts unless where doing eberron. so I love the bump makes it ok not the have 25 magic items.

I am ecstatic about the boost to the classes. I like the power shifting back to the user and less emphasis on the tools he is using. D&D fell to easily into the trap of being more about what the character is using than the character's inherent capabilities. More so than 3.5, Pathfinder RPG is breaking that tool reliance. Unless one is dealing with a weapon on par with Stormbringer and Mournblade (who are themselves more characters or plot devices than magic items), it should always be about the wielder not the tool.

I would personally like to see more magic items that amplify abilities if the character posseses them instead of granting entirely new powers...a mace that gives a +2 damage if the wielder uses Power Attack, a wand that grants a +2 caster level check for divination magic, a cloak that grants a +5 on survival checks, boots that grant a bonus to acrobatic etc etc.
