Sacred cow to the slaughter house: Sorcerer spell selection

Combat & Magic

Traditionally, the Sorcerer as a class has few spells to chose from but he can cast more of them. With the daily/at will spell of the Pathfinder RPG, the gap between wizard and sorcerer has greatly narrowed.

Suggestion: Do the reverse. Make the Sorcerer so that he can cast less spell BUT expand his spell selection to the size of the wizard's and make it so he does not have to prepare them in advance. In short, trade less spells for more flexible spells.

Me thinks there would then be no real difference between socerer and wizard. How would this aid in role-playing?

I agree tweak down the daily casting of the sorcerer class which can be based on the variant UA/SRD spellcaster mechanic at the minimum or one additional daily casting of the Alpha Release 1 wizard with school.

Consider the Favored Soul in comparison to the variant divine spellcaster and the Beguiler to the variant spellcaster.

Give the sorcerer class more known spells, some bonus feats and other class specials maybe some free meta magic spells.

My group has a house rule that only allows a very few spells for the sorcerer but allows even more castings of said spells.

What it did was allow them to actually have a great power but they were not flexible at all. Usually I ended up with very specialized sorcerers then wizards but it worked better for actual Role Play better this way then the original way of doing it.

I've been toying with a few diff ideals like using invocations somewhat like a warlock to something like true sorcery spells for them .i think they should have a diff feel just not sure how to do that of yet

I vote to keep it as close to as is as possible. I have to say that I think to keep sorcerers in line with wizards we may see the following: Unlimited Cantrips, and bloodline options that grant at will and x/per day powers in much the same way that Clerics and Wizards function. If I'm wrong then I'm certain that Jason has something else up his sleeve that will work as well or better.

Liberty's Edge

1) Give them a few more spells known
2) Give them Eschew Materials right from the start
3) Give them a few Metamagics applicable at will, costing higher level slots: Heighten Spell, Still Spell, Silent Spell. Try to preserve the spirit of "Magic as an Art" for the Sorcerer, as opposed to "Magic as a Science" for the Wizard. Allow them to improvise, to somewhat modify their spells on the fly. Monte Cook's Heightened/Lessened versions of spells works great for this.

I agree with 2) and 3). They're, in fact, part of my house rules (Eschew Materials for all casters who don't prepare, and the three basic metamagic feats general options)

As for 1): Maybe.

I guess the bloodlines will be a bit like domains and schools, but maybe with more at will stuff. They will basically be extra spells known.

I can see them getting some basic power they can use at will, something vaguely along the lines of a warlock's eldritch blast (without the flavour, and without the blast shapes and eldritch essences - though who knows?)
