Fine by me. So Sasserine with Attitude. Do you want us looking at our Savage Tide Players Guides or is that unnecessary?

Wow, now I have a whole NEW series of author/books to go find, buy with money I don't have, and read!

OR I could do what I USED to do, and just go to the library,.... Nah, that's too much like work! (Although they DO have online PC re-checkout service for your books now, so you don't have to go back in to check them back out if your not done!)

Tim Powers huh? Sounds like a name I would make up for one of my super-heroes characters secret identity! (Used to play LOTS of 'Champions' back in my college days!)

Sasserine, Isle of Dread,... Meh, the druid just wants to go learn about new places and meet new and interesting new creatures.

And eat them if they p!$$ him off! ;P (Just Kidding! Mostly,...) ;P

Though I AM digging my new slayer form! I'm nowhere NEAR the danger level of the crazed hobbit or his drunken dwarven pal, but at least I feel like can contribute to an actual slam down fight now! (As long as I buff first, of course!) :)

I've always felt that anyone who has no problems accepting a world populated by gigantic fire-breathing lizards, spellcasters and ewoks has no standing whatsoever to whine about "unrealistic" game economics.

Liberty's Edge

Modeling a realistic economy isn't a joke. I don't know why people constantly create these massive castles and edifices with no constraint detailing load bearing or economy of space or any of that stuff that an architect or engineer could probably realistically pull off, but in their hubris they think they can realistically model an economic system.
Which one requires more suspension of disbelief?

Now in reading a little bit about the templars, I think the economic concerns of the time CAN drive a very interesting story. If you DON'T know what you're talking about though, you're going to come up with an extremely half assed contrived construct. Most people can't get over the idea that in medieval times, or pre-industrial ages for that matter, real property and goods were extremely valuable, whereas a man's wage was negligible at best. Post-industrial revelution, the reverse is true. They don't know what they're doing.
And, guess what: talk about railroad, the king just called in all your f&!*ing magic items, half your crop, demands your service and the armament of 50 men-at-arms from your holdings for the war effort against the County of Nextdooria. The king doesn't care what level he is. He's the link to the land, his power is given due to divine right. If you're 10th level and you whack his 3rd level noble butt, you're going to get it from some 12th level guy who thinks he's god's instrument on this earth.
THAT'S medieval economics. So much for game balance. So much for character balance.
Which is all the price guide to the Player's Handbook is...

Yeah, I have a friend from college who to this day, still has a problem with a wizzie who can cast a fireball and destroy an entire platoon of orcs, even if only once a day. BUT has NO problem with his skill based or fighter character diving down the open throat of a dragon and gutting it from the inside! ;)

Realism? If you want realism watch the news! It's called a 'Fantasy' world for a reason!

Ummm,... /rant,... :P

Yeah, true medieval economics was "Mine is bigger than yours. So give me what I want or I'll kill you and take it anyway." If they were NICE they would say 'Please'.

Spoiler:
I just saw that thread with the guy who wants to kill himself. WTF? Talk about trying to send us all on a guilt trip? I hope he doesn't kill himself but it seems very selfish to write out on a public notice board "Hey, I'm probably going to kill myself - wanna talk me out of it?" And what if he then does kill himself (not that we would ever know, since we don't know who he is, so if he stops posting for whaever reason we will all assume the worst)? There are places for that, and this isn't it. Gary's given him a number to call. I've seen that some of you guys have reached out to him, which is very noble and all. Personally, I'm not getting involved - in fact, I'm quite angry about the intrusion into a site that is about GAMING, for Christ's sake. Maybe I'm selfish too, but take your existential angst somewhere else.

I've got two ways of looking at it.

1. I figure the boards are for whatever. People need someone to do the blah blah with. And blah blah isn't always pretty.

2. So a Samaritan dude is walking down the road...

Oh, I wouldn't censor him, and I think the way people reacted was appropriate, and I wouldn't have posted what I said on that thread. I just reacted very badly to what I saw as a blatantly manipulative approach over a critically important subject. The guy is ill and needs help - this isn't the place to get it, and in the meantime I'd prefer it if he didn't drag me into his problems when he is the only person who can deal with it (the Lord helps those who help themselves) and he should go to a doctor. Maybe I'm a bit stiff upper lip about this, but I have sympathy when people are discussing their mental health problems in a reasonable way (like Shiny and Eric the Cleric). This guy isn't doing that.

Hehe.

And if Shiny posted here cuz he wanted to off himself? We'd all try and be there for him.

And who is this poster? He didn't just walk in here. This guy has a forum name that we recognize and he needed some help. I can't nail his style, but he's been here under a name we know.

Maybe he wanted help from us because he knows what we're like around here?

They're just questions. And really there's no point in asking them, or quibbling over his selfishness - selfishness that he admitted. Inappropriate he admitted.

Who cares about the ethics of it all. No, no need to ask.

I haven't seen him before, and didn't recognise his name, so maybe I assumed this was a drive-by posting, which would affect my attitude, it's true. And yes, it may be a cry for help. I'm not suggesting that those who responded to him encouragingly were doing anything wrong - that's a personal decision, and a decision to help those in need is obviously honorable.

But it looks to me less a cry for help and a lot more like a cry for attention, which is a bit different. I read the thread where Eric the Cleric discussed his depression, and he wanted to know if it would get better. They discussed medication, counselling and their own experiences of depression and mental illness. All very mature, enlightening, interesting and supportive. He didn't say he felt so bad he wanted to top himself and then ask for reasons why he shouldn't. That places an intolerable burden upon your fellow posters, many of whom (if they know you at all) only know you very vaguely. Why do this to us - what about your family, your doctor? It is what they are for - I don't want that responsibility foisted on me.

Secondly, I question all this "I tried twice before but failed" stuff. Generally, when men (in particular) genuinely want to kill themselves, they chose a reliably lethal way of doing it. Instead this guy has failed more than once (and seemed vaguely proud of himself). This strikes me again (assuming it is true) as being, rather than genuine attempts to kill himself, ways of drawing attention to himself. As such, he is using these previous attempts and his espoused desires as a way of grabbing and holding our attention in order to aggrandise himself. In my view.

Now, I'm not saying that he doesn't have mental illess problems - I just don't think they are the ones he says he has. I knew of someone who attempted suicide once after being jilted by his girlfriend, but did it in such as way as to more or less ensure he would be rescued (he hanged himself in front of this woman's daughter, who was a teenager at the time, to ensure he would get help). His having done this, the woman was therefore afraid to get rid of him totally (though the sexual bit was gone, he still hung around afterwards and probably still does as a "friend", while remaining very jealous and possessive and basically seeing off any other men) in case he did it again, and because she felt guilty. And he never attempted suicide again, since he more or less got what he wanted out of it. Pure emotional manipulation. He was rejected as a child by his mother and latched on to this woman more as a mother substitute than anything else. So he is odd and damaged, for sure, but he is not particularly depressive.

This guy's approach seems oddly similar to me. Funny how he has spawned a long thread with people talking to him about his problems. I say it again - I'm not saying anything about those who have chosen to respond to him - that's fine, and it reflects well on those who have done so. I just am suspicious of what is actually going on here. Maybe that reflects badly on me, but I'm among friends here and hopefully can discuss these things freely.

It's all good. I'm not disagreeing with anything you say about this. People will or won't get help. They will or won't act rationally. They will or won't be selfish.

What is more important is that they are hurting and when they are at risk for suicide you should do what you can. Different people did different stuff. The guy is talking, he feels better. People have suggested he seek help. He's still alive.

I've got my own problems, but it doesn't hurt me a bit to check in now and then til he switches back to his regular name.

Let me throw this one at you.

Maybe he's not really suicidal. Maybe this is part of his psych or sociology thesis.

The Exchange

On your first post, I agree up to a point. I guess my main point is that I resent having this parachuted on to me, and this is partly why I am keeping away. I also resent what I see as an attempt to make me feel bad so he can feel good. There are ways of expressing stuff like this which don't have that effect on me, and obviously I prefer those. If you feel differently, then cool.

On your second post, that would really piss me off if it were true. It would be very irresponsible. And to be valid scientifically I would expect there to be a bit more control over it than I can detect, though I obviously don't have much qualification in this area.

That would be in violation of sooooo many research ethics rules that his department head would strangle him if he found out about it. So it would still be suicide of sorts.

Grand Lodge

Male Human Expert 5

Ah, that thread. I don't really read the off-topic things anymore (the political ones usually make me angry and the other ones are just weird), but I'll make extra sure to stay extra-away from that one.

The Exchange

Perhaps it is just a cry for attention but if one of the comments from the others helps the guy dig himself out the hole then that's a good thing.

Whatever dark place he is in, helping him is a good thing so long as everyone remembers that he is the only one who can take the advice or not.
The risk is when people start getting emotionally involved.

I will not be posting any help because I came on here to kill ogre mages. And pirates. Not discuss the meaning of life or death.

On the politics, they have shoved up a sticky telling people to be nice. More pertinently, Sam Weiss seems to have disappeared.

I guess those homicidal muslims (or maybe the Archbishop of Canterbury) found him in the end.

Scarab Sages

Male Bullish

Thank you, Aubrey, for expressing what are pretty much my exact thoughts on the 'suicide' thread.

I had considered calling his bluff, but there's a danger that I offend some of the well-meaning posters who've replied to him. And there's no way I'll risk being suspended from this site over his antics.

Other posters have started threads when they're depressed, but they can usually point to specific reasons (money/job worries, illness, divorce, etc) and they get sympathy, along with sometimes practical advice or help.

This guy won't give any justification for his mood, and seems to be getting off on gloating how f~+*ing bad-ass he is, because he plays Russian Roulette every day (with an empty gun, obviously. Duh! Someone could get hurt otherwise!).

The patient, concerned responses do reflect well on those people, which annoys me even more, that good folk like Cintra and others, who have lost friends and family, should have to relive that for his warped amusement.
