I need help with a major decision...

A while back I was gonna sell all my 3.5 stuff(WotC books, Mini's, and all my Paizo stuff) I had mentioned it in a post and had an interested buyer, or at least I thought he was but he never got back to me. Then I read in one of the posts that WotC was not giving Paizo the info they needed to create OGL products for 4E, and there was a possibility that Paizo would just go it alone and stay rooted in 3.5 or possibly go thier own way. At that point I decided to wait and see. As time has gone on I have not played in a game in over a year, since after I came to grips with my drinking problem and went to rehab I have stopped hanging out with people who are not good for me. Unfortunatly some of them were people I played with, between this and the others moving away I stopped playing. I recently got interested in Mutants and Masterminds and bought a few of the books. Still I have not been able to find anyone to play with. I now am considering selling all my stuff as I do not play and while I still want to I have been having a problem finding anyone to game with. What should I do?

I'd hold on to those books. Other companies may not be able to switch as well. I know of at least one start up company that plans on releasing kickass 3.5 stuff into the next decade at the very least! (I know this cause I'm working on several projects for them).

I agree that keeping them is the best option. Unless they're burning a hole in your basement/storage area, it's best to wait and see what happens in the next 6-8 months before you decide.
As for playing, are you a DM? Why not run an online game?

Keep your D & D stuff. I can honestly say that I regret loosing my old D & D stuff. (twice, if you would believe that. Once when I lent my stuff to a friend and another time when I got married.) Once you sell it off, it becomes that much harder to get it back if you want to. Plus, the return for sellin it is not going to be worth the money you put into it.

Besides, who knows what will happen in a few months / years. Things change.

If you want, you can store them at my house free of charge. You pay the shipping to send it to me and I will pay the shipping to return them whenever you want. ;)

I agree with this opinion. This year I found myself buying a 1st edition DMG and PHB. I am playing 3.5 but there were so things I wanted in those books. I still have all my 2e stuff and will not get rid of it.

Here's the mistake I made....

Several years ago I was in a terrible financial situation, I had a very dificult time even coming up with grocery money (obviously I wasn't buying gaming stuff at this time). I had accumlated a lot of 1st edition D&D material however from when I was even younger. So, being in the financial strap I was, I loaded up every 1sted edition item there was (I honestly had pretty much all of it, this included all the books, almost every generic module, and everything Greyhawk related). I also boxed up all of my novels (save but a handful) and took them to the used book store. I almost cried, what was probably around 1,000-1,500 dollars worth of items, I sold for about $100. I got $50.00 for the D&D stuff and about another $50.00 for all the books. I sold things twice. The only thing I salvaged was my huge Dragon magazine collection.

Now I am older and in a far better financial position. I started playing 3rd edition because I could afford to. Do I miss my old books? YES! Sure I needed the money, but in hindsight, it was never worth it. I have now gone on to replace much of the 1st edition D&D stuff I once had. I bought it used, which often means it was actually more expensive the second time around than it was the first time around. Had I kept it, I very well may still be playing 1st edition.

The point is....I regretted my situation and decision. I strongly suspect you will as well. I realize your not doing it for money, but once the mistake is made, you can't undo it. Don't sell them. You never know what the future brings. Now I play with my daughter. Nothing could replace that experience.

Well written. You have given me alot to consider.

Do you still want to play? It looks like you want to. If so, don´t sell your books. You won´t get the money you spent back out of it, and if you happen to find a new group at some time in the future, you can start gaming again instantly.
What would you gain by selling them? A little money, quickly spent. The books hold the promise of countless hours of fun. And getting together with other, new people can help you getting back on track as well.

In the end, it remains your decision, of course. But I can´t imagine any circumstance in which I would sell my game book collection. I would feel very bad if I did.

just my 2c.

You might consider PbP games online. They aren't quite the same as table-gaming but they can still be fun.

Gotta second Wicht. Try PbP. There's some great games here and on other boards. Sometimes hard to get in as a player but DMs can start one anytime and attract players. I have a feeling there will be a lot of new games in March.

You can also post on the net that you are looking for a game. Here on Paizo you can go and post at:
Gamer Connection

On the wizards board you can go and post at:
RPG Gamer Classifieds

To mention a couple, there are many more you can find with a little looking. Even if you can't find a game to play in person you should be able to find one to play by post or even to play while chatting. You may even want to DM a game online, and having that material will make it that much more enjoyable for your players.

That is the major decision, your gaming stuff is small fry. Congrats and good luck.

(but keep (some of) the stuff.:)

Give. Them. To. Me.

I'll share my story as well Secret, maybe it will help.

I have been a gamer for close to 30 years now, and I have spent a lot of allowance/lawnmowing money/pizza driving tips/tax returns etc. etc. down the road for many a year trying to keep up with all the wonderful 1st edition, 2nd edition, 3rd Edition products ( not to mention all the other games out there). Many a time I wasn't able to get everything I wanted, and often I thought of downsizing because the books and minis and accessories were such a pain to lug around, especially when I was a young adult and moving from apartment to apartment. When I first got married, my then-wife added to the pressure, since we had little money, and a new baby to feed. I appeased her by selling my '69 Firebird, but I drew the line at my RPG stuff.

My first wife ran off with a friend of mine while I was in Army Basic Training, and during that whole chaotic period of my life she had control over all my possesions. I wasn't able to return to my hometown until Christmas (a six month time period from her leaving). When I did, I went to the storage facility that we had rented while still married. After paying off the fines that had accumulated from non-payment, I took stock of the losses. My collection of Dragon and Dungeon Mags (faithfully pereserved since issues 50 and 1 respectively) were trashed. Everything else had been rifled through, stepped on, and violated. Fortunately, she didn't figure that the RPG stuff was worth much, so she just scattered it and went for the appliances. I gently colected the scraps and moved on.

Thanks to the magic of eBay and more disposable income as I aged, I have managed to rebuild since that dark day 12 years ago. I am still waiting to construct my fantasy geek room, but I know it will be stocked with a 1st Ed. Deities and Demigods with the Cthulu Mythos in it, and that makes me glad. It's not really the stuff, whether you use it to game, it's the memories. I can pull a Dragon from the stack and say, "wow, I remember having a sleepover and using this article in a character me and my friends were playing". I know firsthand when I had lost a good chunk of it that it is like a piece of your soul going missing.

Keep tham and run a pbp, dude.

You'll find fleshies to play with sooner or later.

I want to thank everyone for their words. It looks I may be playing with my fellow New York Paizonians. I am so glad I procrastinated on the whole Ebay thing and created this thread after reading evryones posts I decided to post on the New York Paizonian Thread and see what might happen and now it looks like it's going down.
