So there's been some talk and speculation about your latest secret project, Erik. Inquiring minds want to know what's going on, but I imagine you'll keep it under wraps until the appointed time and place. Some seem to think it's Greyhawk related, and while I am one of the faithful hoping that's true, I've decided to wait patiently.
Ok, enough waiting.
Come on, man! Throw us a bone! Let slip the bloodhounds of curiosity!

Frankly speaking, 'neat' does not invoke images of Greyhawk, so I think we can scratch that one off the list.
Other things James would call "neat" (NOTE: List is NOT all-inclusive):
Lizards that run on their hind legs.
Magic Shell ice cream topping
Kate Beckinsale
Redwood trees
Remote-control dinosaurs and spiders
Best Buy Tuesdays (that's tomorrow! Yay!)
Abalone sandwiches
Tormenting people with secrets

So Erik is working on a project involving Kate Beckinsale covered in Magic Shell ice cream topping (mmm) eating an abalone sandwich (ick) in a redwood tree while stomping bipedal lizards with a remote-control dinosaur or spider that she purchased at Best Buy on a Tuesday. And harboring a dark secret. Neat!
Speaking as someone who missed out on 1e and 2e, I'd find something Greyhawk beyond awesome. Even more so than the preceding paragraph.

Oddly enough, I find those things neat too. :D

Abalone = delicious! It's basically a giant snail-like critter that lives on rocks in tide pools, and to catch them you have to pry them off the rock with an iron bar. Red abalone's the flavor I grew up with on the northern California coast; they're pretty sizable mollusks and can get to be a foot across (although that's kinda rare). Raw abalone meat is super tough. Like a tire. You have to pound it with a spiked metal hammer before you cook it (or use some other tenderizing technique). I've only rarely seen it offered for sale in restraunts, and then it typically goes for like $40 or more per plate.
Plus, once they've been done eaten, they leave behind awesome shells that look like they're made of rainbows trapped in iron. Check it out!

Note to self: Right up those queries using the Giant Abalone ASAP! The adventure where the town is destroyed by rampaging mutant Giant Abalone should be gold. Cover them in Choco-Shell and add sentient Dino-Overlords and it's sure to be your ticket out of this dead-end town!

Wasn't that like a Ronnie James Dio song?
"You're a Rainbow trapped in iron,In the shell you left behind,
Like the wizard of the ocean,
It's a fate that's so unkind!
Holy abalone!"

In New Zealand, where I'm originally from, they call abalone "paua," which is the Maori word for the shellfish. Paua shell is a major component of Maori decorative and symbolic art. It's also one of the most common touristy things in all the gift shops - rings, earrings, inlaid wood, etc all made with paua shell.
Cheers,
Cam

And thus, the 3.x edition update of the Flail Snial is born!

Hi Nick-
Yeh, I think it's a (3.5) Greyhawk hardback. I'm sure you're thinking the same.
If it is that, Erik, PLEASE ignore the "canon" that was printed after EGG left TSR (well, most of it anyway). Canon is the enemy of fun (I know some of you out there disagree with me). No advancing timelines please, no endless "novels" of dubious quality. What made Greyhawk great was the early modules, not the other stuff (which fans can get with other settings).
You know what'd be great, too, would be a semi-detailed guide to the lands beyond the Flannaess (as printed in the Dragon Annual 1), either as a separate guide, or as part of the Greyhawk guide.
The Jade |
An addition to what I said earlier. It's either a Greyhawk guide, and/or a 3.5 update of GDQ1-7, Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, and/or The Egg of the Phoenix series.
No doubt Erik'll love all the anticipation and speculation generated on this thread...
The very thought causes an avaricious flutter in my chest. There must be something very wrong with me.

> But actually it is a deep fried Kate Beckingsale covered in chocolate shell. Who could say no to that?
Hmmm... I can't see Erik endorsing cannibalism (or cloning for food purposes).
Probably just D&D related.
If it is a time machine though, would he mind please buying several Sports Almanacs from 2015 and sending them to all the posters on this website?

Some seem to think it's Greyhawk related,
If it is a Greyhawk setting book as some have speculated, then consider this my request for some content positioning along the following lines:
Troop strength info like the Silver Marches hadSetting specific prestige classes (cool ones - not just some to have some)
Support for Heroes of Battle
And most importantly, political tension, secret history and places of power (there was some good mention of this being well suited to higher level play in Ivid the Undying), plot hooks. adventure ideas and campaign themes. There was a lot of this in the Marlands, and Power of Faerun, two books that I think are some of the best GM resources that I will go to for idea mining and inspiration for new campaigns.
The Far Wanderer |
Perhaps a Greyhawk book is too much to hope for. We might as well hold our collective breath for a 3.5 edition Planescape.
Either of them would be deeply, utterly, profoundly awesome but there's surely lots of politics involved before they could see the light of day?
Mind you, Erik, you'd be up for a Presidential Medal if you could make either of them happen...
