It would take a guy called Aberzombie to worry about Rot Grubbs...
I can't help it. The thought of something like that digging its way through my flesh...brrr. Always gave me goose bumps, but I thought they were cool. I guess thats why I'm enjoying the AoWs in Dungeon. Those Spawn of Kyuss, with their little green worms, provided that same fascination.

That is the wierdest thing!!! I was just walking back to the office from lunch and had to step over some spilled chinese noodles on the sidewalk which got me thinking (don't ask me why) about rot grubs. I DM'd a guy once that wanted to create a spell called Rot Grub Spray!
I don't know what happened to them though. Personally I was relieved they disappeared. My PC's still find ways to carry around 10' poles to poke at garbage piles for fear of rot grubs.
Cheers,
C.

Weapon Speeds? My brother brought this up on the phone last night. Are they telling us that we can swing a warhammer or a polearm just as fast as we would a dagger? Has anyone seen rules for this, maybe in Dragon? Or do people just make up their own rules regarding?
What? Just what topic are we on? I thought this thread was Rot Grubs.

Seems like Aberzombie opened this thread to write about just anything crossing his mind. And with Zombies, you never know if they even have a mind left, much less what is crossing it just now :-)
(No offense intended, but the name just begs for cheap jokes)
Stefan
imagining a zombies´ mind being an ant highway after writing this... :-)

That's correct. I was wondering whether rot grubs had ever been updated, and hit on the idea for a thread where we could ask questions like that.

No offense taken. As it is, I sometimes wonder just how many worms have chewed through my noggin and how much grey matter they have left me with.

Speaking of monsters (and to try and get back on subject)...
Whatever happened to the (I think) Sheet Ghoul? Or maybe it was Sheet Phantom? Or both? I remember seeing something a like that in the 2E Monstrous Compendium (those big damn binders). It was kind of goofy, I thought, which must be why we don't see it anymore.

Aberzombie wrote:And don't forget the fiendish platypus, the celestial platypus, and (my favorite) the legendary dire platypus. You forgot about the infamous were-platypus
That gets me thinking. Don't those infected with Lycanthropy eventually acquire soem physical attributes in human form that make them seem more like their animal? What would that mean for a were-platypus? A really long nose I guess?

KnightErrantJR |

Lahnkmar Ghouls were a race of people with transparent skin so that you could see their bones. They still did what ghouls are famous for, but they were not undead (just, unsettling . . . especially when you consider that Fafhrd had one as a love interest, though I suppose that's no worse than Mouser's facination with Hisvet the wererat . . . )

The only thing I know of is the entry for them in the Tome of Horrors, by Necromancer Games, so its not a truly official revamp of them. Then again, thats the book I use when I want to throw quicklings at my players . . .
as i understand it, they finally recently released a revised version as a PDF, but i have yet to see it.

But seriously, anyone remember the Sheet Ghoul (Phantom?) from 2E, as from my post somewhere above.
Aye...page 78. They are an asset, as any properly run critter, to an undead oriented campaign...especially when a Sheet Phantom slays a party member...the group is then faced with a Sheet Ghoul for a party member...heh.

Anyone remember the dreaded Vargouille? (AD&D Monster Manual II 1983; Page 123)

lets gte back to the proper topic, can a were-platapus swing a greatsword at the rot grub as fast as he can swing a dagger.
I agree. In case anyone forgot, I was asking what happened to Weapon Speeds. It seems like one of those things that just got left by the wayside. Or are there optional rules for it in some book that I don't have?

The Vegepygmy? I just saw this as someone's name on the message boards and it got me thinking. Did they every upgrade these little b#*&*!s to 3e or 3.5e? I seem to recall an encounter with these things long ago that really messed up our party. I've hated them ever since.
Vegepygmy is/was Sean Reynolds' nickname and I suspect an alter-ego of his on the boards...or not. Still, I thought Sean had a 3E version of them floating around in a Living Greyhawk Journal along with the ol' xvarts.
Rot grubs weren't in the DMG with the molds and slimes?
Sheet ghouls = cheesy
Sheep ghouls = pure brilliance
The next Dragon Compendium ought to convert some of those "classic" April issue monsters.
Aren't vargoulles in one of the WotC books? There's the D&D miniature of them or am I getting the gestalt of monsters confused (like piercers and darkmantles)?
An old 1E critter that made 2E that I will have appearing in the Mistmarsh for the Age of Worms adventure path: volts. One of the few Erol Otus drawings I really liked. Have they ever received a 3E treatment?

What are the range increments for a flung quickling? And do you need an exotic proficiency to use a book to hurl one?
Oh, and Sean Reynolds goes by SeanKReynolds on the boards. (I make no claims that he doesn't have other bifurcated personalities, just that the crafty creature tends to maquerade as...himself! DUN! DUN! DUUUUH!)

Oh, they're still around: Page 254 Monster Manual 3.5... And they were used in a neat trap-room in one of Dungon Magazine's Adventures a few years ago called 'The Seventh Arm'. Pesky critters, only CR2, but when used in a good way, can be quite deadly.

Wolfweres.... I used to love these guys. I remember they saw a lot of use in the old Ravenloft setting, so I assume they are still in the new one. I can't remember the Darklord's name, but the ruler of Kartakas (spelling?) was a greater wolfwere I think. Of course, in any discussion of the wolfwere, we cannot neglect mention of the jackalwere as well.

Harkan Lukas. Was a nasty bastard. Greater wolfwere's were super hard to kill. *Having a warm fuzzy moment thinking about the carnage*

You'll find them as well my creepy fave,Earseekers in the tome of horror Vol.1 from Necromancer games.
Earseekers are just unsettling.
Were those the critters that might have you thinking twice before you press your ear up against a door to listen to the room beyond?
Or was that the thought seeker from first edition?
Hmm...

Yes, that was him, Harkan Lukas. Thanks Blackdragon. We encountered him at least once during our Ravenloft campaign. I loved that campaign. I played an oriental dwarf. I think they were called Korobokuru. I thought they were cool, because the picture of one from the Monstrous Compendium had him holding a severed cat's head (did I mention that I don't like cats).
Anyway, if I remember correctly, wolfweres could use charm magic to try to surprise their victims. If they were converted to 3E, they would make awesome 'evil bards'. Maybe I'll have to work on that, if no one else has.
