BUSTED! The render takes them down two by two. A pair of mine (from 4-2 and 4-5) got shredded yesterday. I am trying to regenerate after the blow...I moved this last week, so that is taking my mind off the pain. Man, I have waaaaaaaay too many comic boxes (110 short boxes) Jeez! I have to trim down the ol' collection...my back is hurting!
The render still has to face another pair of my stories and I have one almost put together to charge up Hamburger Hill.

Quick question. I just receieved an email from James asking me to rework and resubmit a CW article (cool!)
It came from the Gatekeeper addy, so should I just resend it to the Gatekeeper with Resubmission: XXXXX as the subject header? Stupid question but I don't want to use the wrong wording.
Finn, resubmits and manuscripts usually do not go back through the Gatekeeper. Usually to the person asking for them, which in most cases is jeremy.walker@paizo.com. If it came from Jeremy send to that address unless told otherwise.

It came from James Sutter, so perhaps james.sutter@paizo.com would be my best bet?

Mike's been a little backed up, but of all the editors he has traditionally had the fastest turn around time on email responses. If he's worked with you before, I suggest sending him an email directly with a polite inquiry.

In general, send everything query- or CW-related to the Gatekeeper. Adventure manuscripts go to jeremy.walker@paizo.com, and prison mail goes to dungeon@paizo.com. Thanks!

This isn't a query or manuscript. Rather I sent in a CW article and was told it was under consideration. I wasn't aware that such things took so long to consider.
Neeklus -
They do. This is not an unusual wait. Set it aside for a couple more months and if you still haven't heard send a polite inquiry. In the meanwhile - write more.

I just did something that I haven't done since AD&D days... I looked at an adventure I had designed, and thought "Hey, a Bard would kick-ass in this adventure."
I finally had a night off (between my wife being pregnant with our first child, and renovating our new home, I haven't much time to work for D&D lately) and so I got to work on my adventure manuscript for the query that made it past the latest submissions meeting.
I had run this adventure previously, but I had expanded it and taken the past run through into account when re-designing it. My wife had gone to bed, so I happily spent a few hours filling in the maps, working my notes into a more coherent form, etc.
Then I read through the rough copy again... and I came to the conclusion that not only would a bard be good in this adventure, its quite possible that a bard would fare better than almost all of the other core base classes. This wasn't intentional, but it ended up that a bard would "shine" in roughly 2/3 the encounters if they went as planned.
I can't recall any time since AD&D days, when Bards were the only "Prestige Class", that I had thought I would actually gain a game (not just RP) benefit from playing a bard, even in a 4 PC party.
PS. I just thought this anomaly was worth sharing (but not worth a thread of its own), since I don't think I've played a bard since AD&D days... and on that note, I think I'll go back and make sure there are enough encounters where the other core classes can be stars too.

One more question, do I need to attach a new SDF to the resubmission, or am I correct in assuming the original one still applies?
Sorry for being annoying, I obsess over getting this right.

Found this laying around another thread:
Should one send a query or the full article with the SDF?
Send the SDF with the first time you send the article file.
Sounds like they just want it the first time, but you don't need to send it with any resubmissions. I think I also saw that specifically in another thread, but I can't find it now. Hope that helps.

Hey kids - I actually replied to this yesterday, but it looks like the interwebs ate my post.
So here's the deal: when you submit an adventure and get an "under consideration" notice, it means that your query has passed the first round of cuts and will be considered at the next submissions meeting. Everything that reaches that meeting will be rejected, greenlit (meaning a manuscript is requested), or returned with a request for revision and resubmission. One way or another, a query's fate is sealed as soon as the meeting hits.
Campaign Workbooks follow a different path. If your initial submission meets a certain standard, we respond that it's "under consideration" and place it in the Giant Printout Stack of Wonder (while simultaneously entering it in the corresponding Spreadsheet of Glory). Every month, someone (currently me) goes through and picks the cream of the crop for the next issue. Due to the constant influx of new submissions, it's possible for a query to age and ripen in the pile for months, approaching publication only to get pushed back by a hotshot newcomer, before finally a) seeing print, or b) being rejected, should we decide that it no longer meets our needs (generally because an increase in submissions has caused a shift in that "certain standard" we mentioned at the start). While it might seem harsh, this "law of the jungle" approach ensures that we always publish the best possible CWs, and actually gives your query a much better chance of biting and clawing it's way into the magazine than the submissions meetings (which must, of necessity, follow the imperial Roman "thumbs-up-or-thumbs-down" approach, dooming untold numbers of queries).
Due to some recent housecleaning and process adjustment, there will be a slew of CW notices sent out shortly for those folks still "under consideration." Be strong, my friends, and keep 'em coming (particularly the Critical Threats)!

Has anyone received more recent news about submission proposals? I have a couple still in the hopper awaiting the first pass -- dated about mid-April.
For now, time to put on the thinking cap and put together a new round of queries...
I still have two awaiting the Gatekeeper, though the earliest was from late April-early May. I'm keeping my fingers crossed though.

Ditto, both from early May.

Ach! Long thread! This EL is too high for me!
I just have a quick question regarding if the SDF goes with the query, or if it's only for the submission. The Dungeon writer's guidelines seem to imply it goes with the query, and the Dragon guidelines struck me as sort-of silent on the issue.
Can any of you Epic-levels clarify for me?

Moik |

But they say to send a query by e-mail :/
How do I send a signed SDF by e-mail...
And, I remember reading in another thread (the Bazaar of the Bizarre in Article Requests, I think) that those type of submissions go directly to a certain handler. Is there a listing of handlers somewhere? Like, who handles Class Acts, Campaign Workbooks, etc?
Maybe the whole submission process is too high EL for me... :/

We prefer "editor" to "handler." ;D
But to answer your question, on the Dragon side you want to send particular queries to the following editors:
Features—Jason Bulmahn (make sure to spell his last name right in the query) at dragon at paizo dot com.
Spellcraft—Wesley Schneider.
Class Acts, Bazaar of the Bizarre—Mike McArtor.
I'm not sure Dungeon wants their SDFs with a query, but that's up to them to correct. For Dragon, you don't need to send an SDF until you send in the article. For both magazines, you only need to send one SDF, ever—no matter how many revisions you do to the article. The SDF establishes that you wrote the article and didn't plagiarize it from someone else or had it previously published, which I assume doesn't change between revisions. You can send a signed SDF electronically through use of a scanner; if you don't have access to a scanner you can just mail a physical copy to us, but make sure to let us know that's what you're doing in your email.

Okay, I think I'm getting my ranks up...
So it's all going to go to the dragon or dungeon (a) paizo e-mail, but I put it attention to this or that editor as applicable. I need to send in an SDF, but it doesn't need to be in the same correspondence as the query; you simply need to have it on file... A file of SDFs from everyone who's ever submitted to you... Does that count as Colossal, or does it get pruned back down to Gargantuan now and then?
Do Campaign Workbooks have a specific editor to mention?

Hmm, apparently I wasn't clear.
Each Dungeon query needs to have a SDF submitted with the query, attached to the same email or in the same envelope.
We don't need queries for Campaign Workbooks, so you can simply attach the SDF with the article itself.

A Critical Threat I submitted nine or so months ago (and had previously received an "it's under consideration" e-mail about) has been ripped to shreds by the dire, fiendish, feral render. :(
But not a "half-anything"?
Has anyone actually stated this beast up?
Two of my CWs just got the axe. One was not exactly a surprise since I wrote it a couple of years ago, resubmitted it at least twice after various cyberbeasts devoured it, and as it turns out, was not all that good to begin with. The other was, I think, decently written but went in a direction people weren't willing to pursue.
On the other hand, I think four or five CWs have made it through over the last few months with, hopefully, more on the way.

drunken_nomad |

My Crit Threat got pulled apart and the marrow sucked out of its bones! Granted, she was limited (a reincarnated dryad rogue...so, her range was kind of small. BUT, the render still has to face 4 (yes four!) of my proposals and another powerhouse is strapping on platemail, jumping on a warhorse, and is going to try to charge right over the render.

Moik |

Well, four days later, and I've caught up on THIS thread, and now I gotta get caught up on the "Critique My Query" thread.
I've binned a CW idea since (was more advice-ish than just being a set of tables), but at least I can replace that with an intent to make a Critical Threat.
Any specific flavour you guys may want? Gnome Illusionists for exmple?
It's odd that when I review my old games and memories for a Critical Threat that I don't have one to reguritate to the gatekeeper... Seems all my events were spatial or chronological rather than contact... For a minute I was all like "Ooh ooh! But I made lots of cool allies! Critical Allies" but I suppose that would take the spotlight away from the players... I forget where I read not to do that...

Matrissa the Enchantress |

Question: Does a critical threat have to be an intelligent monster, or could it be any thing from any book or compilation with a cool story/gimmick attached to it?
There was a Critical Threat not too long ago that was a Magic Mirror of some kind. (Sorry, I don't know the issue number or complete details off hand, and I'd have to sift and shift through a pile of mixed gaming materials, left over grade one homework belonging to my son, unused craft materials and a variety of other magazines to find the issue in question, so hopefully someone else can forward that information.)
