The gates are all thrown open.

"Yes! YES!! Haha!" Screams Tartuk in triumph.

The cadre of armored figures emerge and encircle the violet kobold, turning his jubilation to agitation and then fear. The troglodytes close ranks on him.

"Huh? No! NO!!" Tartuk wails in terror.

Tartuk runs ahead screaming. He slams into the iron portcullis barring his path, but keeps shouting: "EHMTUAS! EHMTUAS! DORMAGYN DOSST NAUTKHURZON WANRE!"

Undercommon:
"MASTERS! MASTERS! SAVE YOUR UNWORTHY SERVANT!"

All along the battlements (Not shown on the map, they are 30' up, crenelated and set with ballista) armored figures move about purposefully. Horns sound. They are answered by horns from the main fortress beyond.

The figures on the wall are difficult to make for their segmented concealing armor but look vaguely reptilian.

If you happen to be on slide 2 roll one knowledge check and open all the spoilers that apply.

Knowledge (dungeoneering or local) DC 13+:
These are troglodytes, primitive, savage reptilian humanoids that live deep in the earth. It seems that these troglodytes are much more organized than most groups and have access to a lot more metal armor and weapons! These things are ordinarily quite rare among the usually stone age troglodytes.

Knowledge (dungeoneering or local) DC 16+:
When agitated troglodytes can produce a foul musky-reptilian scent that sickens most non-troglodytes that encounter it.

A low rumble emanates from the massive gatehouse.

"Ehmtaus?"

The kobolds close in on the end of the line....

red drive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15...

black drive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17...!

"STOP YOU FOOLS!!" Tartuk shrieks.

drive (aid black): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17

The cart comes to a stop and the kobolds all disembark and head to the stone bridge.

Me too. MWAHAHAHAHA!

Ahead the tracks separate out into four distinct sets of rails A, B, C, and D.

concentration mage hand (DC 15): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27

Once the kobold's cart passes the intersection, Tartuk reaches out one clawed hand, and magically shifts the track lever diverting all further traffic from his rail A to a tangle of looping rails D.

black drive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

red drive (aid): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

Right now that puts Tartuk's cart a total of 70' ahead of Alia and Illthir's.

"BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!" Tartuk's mocking laughter echos back at his pursuers.

Tartuk looks genuinely surprised as Alia's blade finds its way over the lip of the cart, and past all of the poisonous purple kobold's magical defenses to score a line along his jaw. Yet his defenses are enough to rob her of a potentially killing blow.

He recoils and growls at her then he grits his teeth and points his wand at the most visible occupant in the other cart because Nakpik is hiding. *PEW! PEW!*

force damage v Illthir: 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (2, 1) + 2 = 5

The arcing bolts of light angle around Alia and strike Illthir!

Tartuk shouts over his shoulder: "yItungHa', qaH QaQ!"

Draconic:
"DRIVE!"

"BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!" Tartuk laughs and has to wipe tears from his eyes at the sight of the cart disappearing into the hole.

*KLANG!*

"HUH!? Grrr." That is until Alia's cart rear ends him.

Shocked that his missiles failed, Tartuk's expression changes from hate to evil glee. He seems to concentrate and begins to murmur.

concentration check (violent motion, DC 17): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17

Perception DC 21 for Alia's cart, or DC 24 for Celyne's:
He's casting a spell. You can make out the words.

If you made the Perception check - Spellcraft DC 17:
Tartuk is casting create pit! A 10 X 10 foot section of earth just past the hairpin stretches downward out of sight taking the tracks with it! It's as if the whole area just melted. Someone is going to have to make a reflexive Drive check (DC 16)--AND FAST!

"BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!"

Should add "During a chase" to the beginning of the above post. Yeah, you can make checks to pull closer, but then you can't make the challenge checks (which are standard or full-round). The full-round one will (and has) gotten you closer.

Alia and Ilthir's cart closes on the cart ahead of them with Celyne's close on behind.

The strange vivid purple kobold looks back and in surprise to see who is chasing him.

He shouts something lost to the tunnel to his compatriots and pulls a small wand as he does so they pull crossbows.

gray lt crossbow v Alia (v cover, squeezed): 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (9) + 6 - 4 = 11 damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5

red lt crossbow v Alia (v cover, squeezed): 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (4) + 6 - 4 = 6 damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1

The bolts ricochet dangerously around Alia.

Tartuk aims his wand and out streak two bolts of silvery energy that seem to home in upon Alia.

force damage: 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (1, 3) + 2 = 6

Alia, I see shield marked off your sheet, but I did a quick search didn't see it activated anywhere in the kobold lair. Was that from the battle with the boggards earlier in the day? If it's up the missiles splash off of it - no damage. If not - damage.

black drive check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
