![]() Raph's player: Looong time gamer and lover of roleplaying. I like to have fun with characters and settings, such as playing the super-powered ghost of Elvis or an enthusiastic pet dire wolverine. I actively check boards, some might say obsessively, and respond/post pretty frequently (Wednesdays are my long days, so I'm a bit more constrained to the late evenings). I love the over-the-top, insidious yet hilarious feel of goblins in Pathfinder (and am so bummed you can't use them in PFS). The home rules you've described give this a sort of Feng Shui vibe that I think I can really work with. ![]()

---===Background===---:
I don't recall much of my childhood. A few pictures, images, of stuggle, pain, and brief flashes of relief when I managed to get a full belly. No, my memories start when the humans opened their new factory. We lived down slope from a human city, my brothers and I. We would sneak in from time to time and steal, food, pets (also for food), whatever. They threw stuff in the sewer all the time. We had pretty easy pickings. And then the strange liquid came flowing down the sewer. I didn't think it would bother me, I mean, nothing else in the sewer ever did. But over time, I noticed myself changing. And not just me, all of us. That's when he found us, Splintr. I think he was a ratman; I never really asked. He certainly was very rat-like. He took pity on us and dedicated himself to training us. He taught us to speak properly, he taught us to read and write. And he taught us to fight. To test our new skills, we began to roam the city at night, picking fights with the low-lifes, dealing with those the city wouldn't, or couldn't, deal with... the pesh dealers, pimps, thieves. We really felt like we were making a difference, though we never showed our faces. That all changed when a new warrior arrived. Clothed in spiked armor and calling himself the Shreddr, he defeated us and took over the criminal underworld. In a last ditch effort, we set a trap for him, leaving me out in the open, while my brothers lie in wait. But he saw through our ruse. I was hit from behind. When I awoke, I was alone, on a raft, far from my home. I found a note in my pocket, in Master Splintr's hand writing. "Stay away" was all it said. So now, I'm alone, lost in a strange place. I guess I'll have to make due. Perhaps if I find others of my kind... ---===Appearance and Personality===---: Eyes: Black Hair: None to speak of Skin: Green Height: 3'2" Weight: 35# Raph is not a normal goblin. The chemicals he was exposed to greatly affected his memory. He remembers nothing of his early goblin life, and has no experience interacting with regular goblins. His culture more closely resembles that of marginal human populations. In fact, he has very little idea what goblins and their society are really like. He may be in for a rude awakening. ![]()

There isn't a benefit for switching it to a normal skill, but since perform is a vital skill for bards, it seems like having it be a background skill is kind of a gimme. As for the second question, it is not pointless to have multiple perform skills for a bard, particularly if you have the versatile performance ability. For non-bards, it's more of a flavor thing, but not necessarily pointless. There are after all a few interesting feats that require a particular perform skill that you might otherwise not get. ![]()
![]() This has been an interesting discussion to read and think about. I was going to suggest the smart-ass idea (like using it as a coat rack) but Bob Bob Bob beat me to it. I would point out to the Cabbage-Basilisk thread that one of the ideas we have to work with is modern definitions of art that simply are not the same as historic/ prehistoric views. The whole concept of "art for art's sake" is probably a recent creation (keep in mind "recent" is subjective). For most of human history, art most likely had functional attributes, whether magical (like painting a scene of killing a bison to influence your bison hunt), or ceremonial (there's reason to believe that certain cave paintings for example were used in either religious or secular rituals), or whatever. Coming from different traditions of art and viewing excellent craftsmanship, we come to think of them as artistic, and they are, but they aren't at the same time. For example, the mention of the British Museum. When the Brits (and other colonial powers) came into new areas, they often stole objects claiming that the natives wouldn't know how to protect their own art (even though some of these works were hundreds or thousands of years old). The Euros viewed these works as art; the natives may have viewed them as having historical value, religious value, or other values (even something simple like a pot can have artistic value though the potter just used it to cook soup).
