I may never have had the honor or pleasure to meet Mr. Gygax in person, but I have been a fan ever since HE sparked my love of reading and introduced me to a world that forever changed who I am.
His work has spanned the continents (from helping people in the war torn parts of the world escape from the grim realities of everyday life to a better place) and the generations (through my daughter and many other gamers who will take up the dice long after he has passed from this world).
His direct influence on MY life cannot be measured, and his indirect influence on our entire world also cannot easily be quantified. There are VERY few people in human history could ever make that claim about, Mr. Gygax was one such gem. He will be missed by all.
Rest in Peace oh great father of gaming.....condolances to your family first, your personal friends second, and to all gamers as well....and last but not least, from the bottom of my heart: THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!

Has anyone tried it? Does it work?
Yes I have tried it, and while it is fun as a one off exercise to try weird things, I find it hard for D&D for instance, because so much is based on party Balance.
I find other game systems more suitable, and honestly I like VTM better one on one! Not just a one off, but i've run an entire campaign for just one player and it was BETTER than when I tried it with 4 players!
So good luck...and please don't complain that you have just one player....that's more than I have =(

Kruelaid wrote: Totally agree with you. I suggest respective paladins read the excellent articles about their Gods as provided in Dungeon (RIP) or the less detailed descriptions in their campaign books. Even better, write up your own god.
I still and always will insist that all Paladins need a guiding principle which will allow them to resolve conflicts in their respective codes. This, after all, is something that all Paladins have in literature and history. Even here in China, they had such men about 1800 years ago.
And certainly, if someone is Lawful Good, protecting the weak and innocent, as it is not intrinsically Christian, is a good candidate, and it is the common characteristic of all literary Paladin codes. Even here in China, they had such men about 1800 years ago. Sikh men were (are?) required to swear an oath to protect the weak and innocent. The list goes on.
But let's worry about D&D. For example:
In Core Beliefs: Pelor, Sean Reynolds wrote:
[Pelor] is unabashed in his belief in the cause of good and is indifferent to the squabbles between law and chaos--as long as good prevails.
Cited from Dungeon #346, p.22
Thus Pelor would want his Paladins to be good, and this clearly supersedes lawfulness....
Exactly right...Pelor is more concerned with the "good" aspec...whereas St-Cuthbert is mor concerned with the "Lawful" aspect...therefore the paladins of these 2 gods would react very differently to the example of slaying a BBEG with a history of harming innocents in his/her escapes if they were to surrender....that's why the PHB does not directly tell you what a paladin would do in this situation.
This is all imho of course....hence each Dm will rule the actions of said paladins and wether or not they lose their gods favor.
I know it really isn't what you asked Saern, but I feel the question cannot be answered for all situations. Hope that helps.
Be safe all.
IMHO...the paladin's code is open for interpretation because it applies to ALL paladins. The question whereby all this discussion comes from is:
Do all paladins follow the exact same code or are they different because the worship different god? (ie do paladins of Pelor, Heironeous, and St-Cuthbert all have the exact same code)?
I'm not certain, but my gut instinct says no. Hence Kurelaid's arguments make perfect sense for a Paladin of the christian god, not D&D gods. If all paladins followed the same god, then the game deseigners could easily have expressly spelled out the code in detail...which is why its open to interpretation.
Imho, every DM makes that call for his or her game...there is no real right or wrong answer.
Be safe all.

The thought of surviving immersion in water that is at least 212 degrees Fahrenheit for more than a moment is ridiculous-- having a chance to live at all is heroic.
You're right about boiling water of course, what I meant was very hot water. Its in an old module (don't remember which one) that said anyone swimming through it would take 3D6 points of damage per round.
Of course more resourceful and better prepared characters would find another way to get across entirely, but when the guy asked me the question I didn't have an answer for him (my usual spiel about how its not actually damage, its how well you can roll with the hits, didn't seem to apply).
Any alternate explanations would be helpful.
Thanks guys, and be safe.

Kyr wrote: Hit Points ARE the mechanism you are looking for - yes you can condition your body to take more damage - but you don't get tougher along anything close to the progression of hit point gain by level even for a wizard. Hit Points represent your ability to dodge, duck, roll with a hit, shake off tough blows etc. AND fighters gain that ability faster than wizards.
A sword run through the cut is fatal no matter how tough you are hit points are a system that allow what would be a fatal stroke to a 1st level character, to be shrugged of by a high level character - due to their defensive skills and instincts.
Hey Kyr, Long time no see bud...how are things with you and yours?
Regarding hit points, I agree with you most of the time, but a player once asked a good question that stumped me regarding a specific situation:
Pool of boiling water that did that 3D6 points of damage per round when you are in it. The players needed to cross it (it would take 3 rounds). Generally a first level fighter is dead, but a 10th level fighter would just be burnt a little (even if they have the same ranks in swim). I had a hard time envisaging it as the "rolling with the hits and general defensive survivability" thing.
I'm curious what your take on stuff like that is (another example would be falling damage).

Krome wrote: If I want a combat machine that is able to sit in the halls of kings, lead great armies and maybe just maybe keep watch at night... well it isn't a Fighter. To do so, I must either multiclass or take some other class altogether, usually a magic using one, or one of the weird specialized "core" classes intoduced in those "Complete" books (that are really just prestige classes with 20 levels).
I would prefer a point buy system for abilities (no more dice rolling at all for stats), and choose the class skills based upon your vision of your character. Feats are just fine now as is magic. But the skills still need some lovin'.
Maybe this was in 3.0, (I can't remember the EXACT referrence), but there was a feat that was super useful for humans. It was called Versatility. It allowed you to pick any two class skills and add them to your class list (if taken at first level it allowd you access to them all the way). I remember EVERY single one of us took it and added spot and listen to our class skills (this way even if we didn't pump skill points into them EVERY level, we kept them pretty high). Our DM seriously used those two almost a hundred times an adventure.
This allows for the sort of customization of class skill list without total revamping them or getting really "weird" (or non stereotypical) calss skill lists.
Even if this feat no longer exists, we use it in our games as we all like it and it doesn't seem overpowered (trade a feat for a slight increase to class skills list). But we only allow it once per character.
According to the RAW, clerics make the best lookouts, and are the rogue's worst nightmare (with lots of skill points in them AND high wisdom).
Hope that helps, be safe all.

Paladin BY FAR!
Most of the time, my group does a decent job of keeping the distinction between Lawful Good and Lawful Stupid. Having said that however, it is not surprising that Paladins cack it the most.
It is only logical I suppose that being the Ultimate in self sacrificing paragon of justice and courage, that the Paladin will find himself or herself in harms way more often than most. Not surprisingly, the laws of probability dictate this class is doomed the most. And so it plays it in most of our games.
This class is the most likely of any to die, and we have had the distinction/misfortune (depends on your outlook I suppose) of seeing more Paladin deaths than Almost all the other classes combined.
Poor Sir Pally...may they all rest in peace.

VERY interesting topic.
I don't really "know" why this hobby seems to be white guy centric (as it appears to be), but it really does depend on who your firends are.
I was taught this game (many winters ago) by a white guy, and my first group (in high school) was mostly european decended white guys. Since then however, most of my gaming groups have been very mixed (as is Canadian society as whole). There are MANY Arab Canadians (especially in cities like Montreal), but due to the cultural bias, not many of them are gamers. When I did find a group of them to play with (granted we had to teach some of them the game), they became my default group. And when some of my anglo firends moved cities, it became an all Arab Canadian group. We even joked about trying to real in white guys or gals.
My last group in Dubai was like the United Nations of D&D (all expats). One American, One Brit, One South African, One Australian, One Iraqi, and moi (a mix, but still mostly white males)...hmm...very interesting as to the "why"...same goes for gender division, etc...
With regards to some people's mentioning of it being based on European fantasy as a possible explanation of why it's popular with European decendants, i'm not sure. I mean we (bunch of Arab Candians) loved it...and our favorite setting was Japanese themed (Rokugan), even though none of us has ever set foot in Japan (yet..fingers crossed lol)...oddly enough, our LEAST favorite setting...you guessed it...Al Qadim (Arabian setting)...felt too contrived and cliched LOL...go figure.
Whatever the reasons, my experience is its a richer and much more fun game when the group is mixed...so keep spreading the love of the hobby and be safe my friends.
Emergency! Calling Fake Healer!
You are needed urgently your Fakeyness.
On a more serious note, welcome to the boards Xilo (you will learn in time the FH inside joke with regards to Rouges lol).
I personally like the fighter rogue multiclass build. My advice is go one more level fighter (for one more feat) and then switch back to rogue for a few. Take feats that maximize your teamwork mellee (read sneak attack heaven from flanking etc...), or go for a ranged weapon build (those extra fighter feats will come in handy!). Whatever you decide, enjoy. And to adress your point about your friend not contributing much, a multiclass WILL obviously be inferior in any one aspect to a pure class, but's the versatility that you get in return to the power tradeoff (not to mention the very cool character concepts possible when you multiclass).
Be safe.

In my first gaming group ever I seem to recall a guy claiming he could skew the dice distribution a D6 by shaving a certain corner and making it roll more 6s. Now this was 19 years ago and I was 14 so I don't remember if its worked or not lol. But my gaming store in Montreal sold what were called "loaded dice" that were supposed to roll high. I never bought any so I can't tell you if they work.

Wow talk about a touchy topic, I must applaud all for the civility shown regarding such a sensitive (to some) issue.
This particular question was a big NoNo for my group before last. Having immigrated from a country torn appart by sectarian war, in a region engulfed in religious conflict, this was one topic that was off limits!
I seem to remember one guy mentioning it nonchalantly our first session, but 4 of the iciest stares and a quick intervention by the Dm saying it was not a question asked in civilized company quickly set a precedent. In 12 years of gaming with that group, no one EVER brought it up again. We talk about absolutely anything and everything but that.
Speaking for myslef, and thanks to the awsome definitions provided by my fellow paizoniand, I would have to say i'm a non-theist. It's not that I believe religion is bad per se (everyone is free to believe in whatever works for them), it's more an opposition to organized religion. I guess that's not too much of a surprise considering my background.
Carry on guys, and be safe all.
I'm going to have to go with Cleric in general.
REASONS: Good Tankage, healing and undead turning, some long range artillery power (in terms of spells), only lacking in stealth and skills points. 3 out of 4 is the best any class can get imho, so it's Cleric for me.
I'll weigh in too just for the heck of it.
Though I have never played WOW I was a HUGE MMORPG addict before we moved to Qatar and spent a sizeable chunk of my last 5 years in Canada playing EQ (6 hours a day after work and as much as 20 on the weekends)! Luckily for me the wife was just as big an addict and we both played together (2 accounts on different computers in the house) or I surely would have been divorced by now lol.
It has been said but it bears repeating: the 2 are different beasts (the only thing they have in common is the RPG in the title). They each have different things going for them (like the no limits but your imagination for table top vs the immediacy and sheer scale or MMORPGs) but neither is "better" in my opinion. It totally depends what you are in the mood for. And most importantly they are NOT mutually exclusive (except that you obviously can't do both at the same time). I enjoyed and still do (though I have no time play MMORPGs in Qatar) BOTH.
Be safe all.
I don't have my books with me either, but here is what I understand from the RAW (maybe some supplements out there contradict or update the issue):
Anybody can have a pet and teach it "tricks" like: stay, attack, or guard! That is only a pet and not an animal "companion".
But in order to have an animal companion or familiar (ie one that ADVANCES in HD and abilities/powers with you) is ONLY available to classes that have that as a feature (like ranger or druid). Again there may be feats out there in the newer supplements (or variants from some splat books) that do give this option to everyone but that's not how I understod it.
If I am mistaken i'm sure someone will point it out shortly. Hope that helped in some way.
Be safe all.

I don't really want to start a political row on these boards (they are not the place for it), but let me just say that there are 2 sides to every conflict. And ESPECIALLY north americans only get one side. Isreal is no saint believe me. As a Lebanese Canadian I am certainly not a Hezbollah supporter, but to say Israel showed "restraint" is just evil man (for lack of a better word).
IF Canada occupied vermont for 20 years illegally and kidnapped hundereds of citizens (detaining some for 27 years WITHOUT even charging them), and IF some US citizens crossed the border to kidnapp SOLDIERS to exchange for their brethren then you are saying it's alright if Canada showed "restraint" by bombing red cross trucks in Dallas?? Come on guys...you are entitles to whatever beliefs (or sides in the conflict) you wish to have/take...but I'm asking we keep these dicussion off the roleplaying boards please.
Thank you, and may this new year bring peace to ALL the troubled reagions of the world.

Sigh....Kender are the halfling specific to the world of Krynn (Dragonlance). They are kleptomaniacal (sp?), insatiably curious, utterly fearless, and just an all around pain in the butt. They also have the ability to "taunt" an opponent and make them lose their mind with rage.
Don't get me wrong, they fill the niche of comic relief in novels to a T, but in an adventure, they make you want to pull out all your hair.

Sorry for Derailing the thread temporarily. Be safe all.
I agree that it mostly depends on your particular group makeup/dynamics. I have had TPKs before and the party understood that if it's through their bad decisions, then they cannot blame me. If on the other hand it was sheer bad luck then it's tough to swallow, but just as there have been encounters where they were not supposed to succeed and they did through sheer good luck, then sometimes that door swings both ways. I DO fudge rolls for the sake of the story occasionally but I won't do it ALL the time. My groups knows and accepts that. As for other groups I cannot say.
Happy gaming, and be safe all.

No one wanted to play a Kender, so I provided an NPC Kender (just for comic relief...eventhough in general i don't like to play the extra member of the party). All I can say is I MUST have played them right because the players LOVED the setting, but HATED the Kender...lo and behold, the next 2 times others Dmed in DragonLance, they BOTH mysteriously had the Kender wiped out! Well in the 19 years I have been playing, I've run campaigns in GreyHawk, FR, MERP, Dragonlcance, Planescape, Spelljammer, Athas, KaraTur (also FR I guess), and ROKUGAN (my absolute favorite)! I have also run a couple of home brew ones (but alas they were not too memorable as I was young and they were hastily constructed). I have also run other games than D&D (including Shadowrun, Earth Dawn, Vampire the masquerade, Werewolf the Apocalypse, Mage the ascention, Star Frontiers, Gamma World, GURPS, RIFTS, and Star Trek, even Star Wars). The last game I played in was in our other DMs Home brew world called Greakor (very interesting...had a really original history...and was progressively introduced to us because most of the world was unexplored...too bad we had to move and I never got to explore more of it).
To break it down for the poll: The world I have most OFTEN used when I Dmed was Greyhawk. When playing, the world most ofetn used by other DMs was Greyhawk as well. ALthought my FAVORITE still is ROKUGAN!

Gish Characters that can both hack and manipulate the arcane or divine mana are very cool as a concept, and with the different babs, spell progression, feat progression etc...i think WoTC did a great job trying to keep them as balanced as humanly possible (ok so there are people out there that spcialize in "breaking" character builds...but most people do it via concept and not min maxing). Anyways i guess what i'm trying to say is that thought you may be more versatile as a PC if you can do both, it is only logical that you will never be as good at any ONE of those factes as a specialist who only does that one thing (nor should you be!). So in summary I agree with Kyr that IF your arcane caster/melleer can outshine the wizard in magic and out fight the fighter in mellee then something is VERY wrong.

Hey Kyr,
I think your post is very interesting. I do not disagree with you about the rarity of magic and how much MORE special it is when not every farmer is a 1st level sorceror. I also think the feats you presented are really neat and well thought out...my only concern however is that it seems to penalize the casters (who are already shorter on feats than others) when they have to spend their first one just so they can BE casters. I thought it might be negated by giving everyone an extra one at first level, but then that seems to reward the mellee classes more. Hmmm quite a pickle, i'm not sure how to do this without unbalacing the classes (with feat usages)...it may seem trivial, but at first level every feat makes a difference. The only way I adress this is to enforce the training to level rules (which I know not everyone uses) and make it hard to find appropriate level arcane and divine casters to teach potential students. This way they can still be rare in the game world WITHOUT having to be penalised feat wise.
It's not perfect, and maybe others will have a better solution for you Kyr, but for what it's worth hope that helps.

As far as spells that would be useful in real life, depending on the situation, summoning, dragon ally, planar ally and planar binding spells would be useful to bring in a biological construction, repair, or rescue team 9celestial or good or neutral aligned creatures only; fiendish or evil would cause too many problems. The small creatures could scout out a site of a building collapse or other disaster to locate survivors or could scout pipes and conduits in a standing structure to check for damage. The bigger creatures could lift debris out of a collapse area, or carry building supplies to a construction site. Help might not be over an overly long period but it would still be useful. As a note, what led me to think of this was seeing a bridge collapse in Montreal on the news this past week and realizing how frightening it would be for anyone who was nearby. So to all those who either read and/or post on these boards and either live or have friends or relatives living in or near Montreal, I hope all of you and your families and friends are safe and sound.
