Stats for hoopaks?

3.5/d20/OGL

I can't seem to find the base stats for a hoopak, its melee damage, its range, it's ranged attack increment and damage, etc.

I'd say combine the quarterstaff (or perhaps short spear) and the sling stats, perhaps at small size. Maybe a 1d3 or 1d4 damage piercing attack from the spear tip on the back end if you're using quarterstaff. Exotic weapon. Racially automatic for kender, of course.

ACK! He said the "K" word!

Shudders thinking back to all past experiences involving this detestable race. A fellow Dm had it right decreeing that all of those rodents were wiped out! I mean come on....insatiable curiosity...no fear...iq of 3...all of which amount to one thing: Extinction! LOL

Sorry for Derailing the thread temporarily. Be safe all.

Sorry to ask, but what's a kender? Was it in a previous version? I don't ever remember seeing said critter... O.o?

Sigh....Kender are the halfling specific to the world of Krynn (Dragonlance). They are kleptomaniacal (sp?), insatiably curious, utterly fearless, and just an all around pain in the butt. They also have the ability to "taunt" an opponent and make them lose their mind with rage.

Don't get me wrong, they fill the niche of comic relief in novels to a T, but in an adventure, they make you want to pull out all your hair.

Terribly sorry to have derailed your thread Mrannah. I agree with Crust that combining a staff and sling ought to do it nicely. My understanding of a hoopak is that it did not have a spear tip at all. Just a staff with a sling built into the top. Don't forget the annoying noises when swung in an arc overhead.

Sorry for interupting the thread, I was curious. Thank you.

Let me just copy what's written in the 2E Tales of the Lance box (specifically the World Book of Ansalon text):

"The hoopak (sling-staff) is the most common of kender tools. This 5' ironwood staff has a short spike attached to its tip, which doubles as a spear or bo stick. The staff's other end is forked and laced with gut. A stone may be flung by either planting the blade end of the hoopak in the earth and bending the staff back to sling the stone, or whirling the hoopak overhead as a traditional sling-staff. This tool acts like a bullroar when whirled in the air, creating a low thrumming sound. Its uses include:
-Throwing as a spear
-Striking as a staff
-Shooting or slinging stones
-Prying with the blade
-Picking apples with the gut
-Whirling as a bullroar" (pgs. 72-73)

Other kender weapons include the battak (a walking stick with a variety of items fastened along its length), the bollik (a utility belt that doubles as a bola), the chapak (a hand axe with a sling affixed to the double-pronged back blade and a hollow handle for concealing items), the hachak (a 6' long pole-axe with a hammer and spike on the other end the doubles as a ladder), the polpak (a 6' staff with a short sword hidden on the end, used for reach attacks and pruning), the sashik (a sash/whip that functions as a flail and can be used to entangle foes), the sithak (a bow with blades on either end, to be used in archery or melee), and lastly, the whippik (a whip that can be used to loose darts at longer range).

Each kender weapon can be used in practical (and often musical) ways as well as in combat situations. Very resourceful.

Cheers!

We gave rules for hoopaks in the 32 page Dungeon Master's Resource Booklet included with the DM's Screen for Dragonlance. Various other 3.5 sourcebooks by Sovereign Press/Margaret Weis Productions include characters with hoopaks (such as Tas in War of the Lance and Dragons of Autumn), and most of the classic kender weapons will be included in Races of Ansalon, due out in the next few months.

It is essentially a combination of quarterstaff, shortspear, and sling. It's an exotic weapon, although kender treat it as a simple weapon due to Weapon Familiarity. Costs 21 gp (or steel pieces in DL) and weighs 8 lb.

Cheers,
Cam

I had a player once who wanted to play a hoopak-wielding kender in my homebrew. I told him to just combine the stats for quarterstaff and sling. Couldn't think of a reason to make it exotic myself...if you loose one you loose them both, so to speak.

P.S. I consider myself fortunate because I've never had a bad kender experience. It was only ever the one player, and he was good at it.
