Hi Guys,

As some of you know already I am a Candian gamer who's had to relocate overseas for work reasons. I find myself in a dilema and need your suggestions please.

My group in Montreal and I sometimes played over Msn and Yahoo messenger. Every 6 months or so when the withdrawls get really bad lol, we get together for an online gorup conference using just headsets and microphones. Sure the Dm has to have the maps prescanned and emailed to everyone and we trust each others not to cheat with rolls and stuff, but it was the only way we could all play from halfway around the world.

This was before Lilith mentioned the fantasy ground software a while back, and while it looks very interesting, I haven't purchased it yet and am really curious how well it works (also i have to convince my buddies to get it too lol). Do you guys really recommend it?

I also currently play online in a few play by post games (with people i met in Dubai and online), but while its fun it's AGONIZINGLY slow!
Unfotunately for me there do not seem to be ANY roleplayers out here. I am currently looking for viable alternatives that will allow me to continue gaming....Any other software like fantasy grounds out there anyone recommends? Or are there other things i could look into that might help. I realized this message board is a gold nime of ideas so i'm inviting any and all suggestions please.

Thanks in advance and be safe all.

Hello everyone,

What a year...we moved from Canada to the UAE last year, where I was lucky enough to find a great group of guys in Dubai thanks to this very board!
Now unfortunately, work has me moved to Doha (Qatar)...is there any chance someone on these boards is in Qatar??

Help...as Kyr said earlier...its a desert out here!!

Hello everyone,

I was reading the earlier thread about NPCs in the party and realized I have this very same dilema:
I am about to start a very small group of players in the Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil module. There are only 3 players (but they begged for THAT module), and i'm a worried that that's not enough (without giving any spoilers away...anyone who's played it will know what i'm talking about).
I have already upped their starting level and given them better gear, but i was wondering what else anyone would advise (without making 3 more NPC characters in the party)!
Any advise would be welcome...interesting to see what peoples takes on this will be...thanks in advance...and once again sorry for almost hijacking a thread earlier!

Be safe all.

This may be covered in the rule books...but since they are being shipped to me and i don't have access to them for awhile..perhaps someone can refresh my memory please?

A 1st level fighter (+1 attack bonus and +1 from str when wileding a long sword) is attacking a monster with Ac 23. We established in a previous post that he can only hit on a natural 20.
My question is what about if he rolled a natural 19 (not enough to hit with the bonuses he has) but supposed to be a threat for a crit. What happens? Is it a miss or does he reroll and crit only on a 20? or how is this resolved?

Your feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hey all,

Just a quick question...anyone out there hate vorpal weapons as much as i do (when Dming that is)?

I find them totally unbalancing (lopping a guy's head off when he still has over 100 hit points...especially since the game doesn't have called shot mechanics in it!!).
Besides whith certain feats, the mid to high level fighter (ex one using 2 weapon fighting with improved crit with both his weapons) is almost crtitting every other round if not every round (this was from personal experience in a game I was running a while back..and a PC had a vorpal blade...silly me not realising how unbalancing it was...ruined my whole campaign!)!!

Needless to say when I Dm now, I have totally outlawed this weapon. I was just wondering if the general opinion out there is that i'm just being too pig headed and hard on my players? Or do others agree with me on this?

Greetings all,

As a dungeon master, I have been struggling with a certain aspect of game mechanics ever since 3rd Edition came out.
The main problem I have with the D20 system is the rule that "1" is ALWAYS a miss or failure and that "20" is ALWAYS a hit or success.

To me that just seems nonsensical (did I spell that right?). Mathematically it means no matter how outrageous the situation, on average 1 out of 20 will succeed. Images it brings to mind:
20 pixies attacking a Terrasque, one will hit it each round?
20 humans try and swim UP a waterfall, one will succeed???
On the other end of the spectrum:
A great Wyrm Red Dragon rolling a "1" cannot hit a stable just sitting there?
The Rogue has plus 38 to his hide check and the 20 guards he is sneaking past have spot at zero. If any of them get a "20" then they spot him no matter what he rolls? or if he was to roll a "1" then ALL of them will spot him??
Etc... As you can see this rule puzzled me greatly.

On the other hand, should you dismiss that rule entirely, then you create other problems:
1) I HATE and refuse to ever say to a player you cannot do that, its not in the rules, or you have no chance of succedding at that (the DC is too high). I like to think there is ALWAYS a chance no matter how slim that something will work (obviously NOT a 1 in 20 chance though that's WAY too high).
2) Mathematically there becomes no point in trying to hit something that has more Ac than 20 plus your modifier, or even more troubling if you have plus 1 to hit, then effectively Ac 22 and Ac 48 are the same for you (not reachable).

So the question becomes how to address this minor inconvenience in an otherwise great system, without having to revamp the whole system.
This is what i've come up with so far:

No automatic anythings. You roll and add modifires and compare to target number. In the case of "20"s, you reroll and add that number to the 20 and then modifiers. As long as you keep rolling "20"s, you keep adding and rerolling. This gives a chance (however slim) that a pixie CAN hit a terrasque (but NOT 1 in 20). And also for a Pc with plus 1 to hit, there is a Difference between Ac 22 and 48 (the chances of rolling the latter are far less than the former, eventhough you have a chance for both (i'm no statistician but i know the chances of keeping rolling "20"s gets slimmer and eventual with enough consecutive "20"s then we're talking miniscule).
Same system for the "1"s. You reroll and SUBTRACT the new mumber from 1 and your modifier and compare to target number. To use above example, Rogues with plus 38 hide rolls a "1", rerolls and gets "12" (his new number is 38-1-12= 25). So now the guards with zero spot still have to roll and get a "20" AND get a 5 on their next roll to spot him (hey plus 38 hide is pretty exceptional).
This sytem adds an extra layer of complexity (and math) but I think enable you to still mathematically be able to do almost anything, Without the 1 in 20 rule.

I was just wondering what you all thought. I would really appreciate some feedback or comments, maybe even suggestions or criticisms. More importantly, how does everyone else out there deal with this issue? or is it even an issue for anyone other than myself?(am I too anal retentive?)LOL.

Please post and let me know.
Thanks and have a great day all.

Good Day (or evening depending on where you are in the world)all,

I just thought it would be fun to post funny things that happened during a gaming session, so we can all have a good laugh. It also helps to know you are not alone out there. I have often wondered if my friends and i are "normal". I suspect not, but i'll bet there are a LOT more of us out there.
I'll start us off with a short list of "Famous Last Words" (off the top of my head):

Rogue: Traps? who needs to check for traps?
Rogue(after checking for traps): All clear guys!
Fighter: Let me go first, I can take the most punishment.
Wizard: SR! of crap I forgot these things have SR!
Any PC: I wonder what this Lever does.
Any PC: Those? nah dude they're harmless.
Any PC: Trust me it's made of cheese! (long story there)
Party as a whole: And who's gonna make us?
Paladin: Orcus Schmorkus, he's evil and i'm wasting his ass!
Cleric turning undead (in this case a Demi Lich of great power): Bite me Mr. Demi B$$@@!

And there are a lot more moments of hilarity, but that's all I can think of for now...except for one other thing which stands out.
We all played in Canada (and like myself) we had a lot of gamers who are immigrants to Canada (consequently English is not their first language). This one guy in particular cracked me up. Whenever the party entered a crypt they all snickered and hoped to god in my description there would be a Sarcophagus. This poor guy could never pronounce it and always referred to it as a : " sacro faget!" LOL, the whole group was in stitches the first time he did it, and didn't know why we were all laughing. When we finally explained it he was a little embarassed, but the WHOLE group now takes to calling them that everytime.

Feel free to chime in guys.
Be safe all.
