I had a PC die in an AL game (pbp) I was running last winter. Pretty rare, but it happens. Sometimes the dice don't like you. Although, this is the first pc death I've seen from excessive damage.

All inspiration does is grant advantage, and I'd already have advantage from danger sense. It's ok. PCs die sometimes. Just in case: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8 See? He's destined to die. Lol

Con Save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17 4 damage. May get advantage on the Dex saves for Danger Sense. Dex Save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 41d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
If Danger Sense works, then that's 5d6 damage. Otherwise it's 6d6. 5d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 6, 3, 6) = 27 Extra d6?: 1d6 ⇒ 6 Even if Danger Sense works, that's enough damage to bring Odan to negative in his hit points, which is instant death.

Well, damn, Odan says. As much as I like these critters, sometimes you gotta put them down. Reckless Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 101d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24

We have not. Are you experienced in war? If not, I'd like you to stay in the back and out of danger, until we can get you back home. Grab any weapon you find here, that may serve better than a brick. Or take one if mine, any one.

Oh good, more things to test my mettle. Odan runs up with his Battleaxe, attacking recklessly. Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

I saw this: "All the furnishings have been piled up near the trapped door in a barricade." And thought you mean trapdoor - as in a little square door that leads downwards. Reading it again, and it's supposed to reference the door which was trapped. Seeing how there's nothing in the room, it's really confusing why that door was trapped at all.

Hack n slash doesn't bother me, I was just expecting it to be more than three fights. :) Moving forward, I'm good with any of the options above. Level 2 stuff:

Ouch! Odan strikes back at the flaming skeleton. 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
If the attack just enough to destroy it, then he'll stay to fight the second. If not, he'll move back into the stairwell.

Odan bursts out laughing. Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
I'm not sure I can kill something that pathetic! he says, still laughing. Dear god, my sides are hurting!

There's no real knowledge checks in 5e like there are in PF. So it's up to the DM to determine who, if anyone, knows what about any given creature, or to pick a skill to use for information. Int: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0 Odan has absolutely no idea what these foul things are. He rushes headlong into them, axe held high. Attack!: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

With a grunt to himself, Odan tries to kick the door in. Note: If anyone tries to stop him, he'll back down. Only use this roll if everyone is ok with it. Strength (Athletics?): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19

Can Odan try? I thank you, friend, for giving it a chance. Odan takes out some dried meats, as well, and tosses it to the lizard. Hey there, little beastie. Is all right. It was just a misunderstanding, that's all. 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24

A bit more anger enters his voice than he'd like. Oadan can't help but wear his heart on his sleeve. Well! Be quick about it. We've already hurt the little guy; put him out of his misery.

There's no penalty for firing into melee in 5e. However, if an ally is in the way and you don't have the sharpshooter feat, the enemy may have 1/2 or 3/4 cover. Aw, it's just a little beastie, Odan says, visibly relaxing, while dropping his javelin arm. But as soon as his companions start shooting at it, his heart breaks. No! He shouts in his own mind. As the "dust in the air" causes his eye to water, he asks, quietly, Why? He just wanted a little attention. Maybe a scratch behind the ears... I've decided to make the dwarven "tough on the outside" barbarian have a soft spot for animals. Seemed like a fun juxtaposition. Skipping Odans turn. I figure Seth will kill it before it has a turn. I'm trying to make Odan be very reluctant to attack animals - even magical ones. |
