My group took out everything but the Carrion Sisters, Dreamstalker Sisters, and Wyverns. They had a lot of trouble on the first night, dropping from like 228 defense points to 173. This was largely because the opening fight with the giant at the gate took longer than expected, and they were playing catch up for the rest of the battle.

They really crushed it the second night though, and they are only down to like 167 and should be finishing off the Wyverns and Ankheg next time.

Question on the finale: I can't actually figure out where on the map of Kseeruk's encampment the Ankheg's tunnel leads. Can anyone point it out to me?

Edit: Ah, found it, the easternmost pen in Q4. Man, they really tucked that away.

How did they end up with 223 DP to start with! My group did all of the city prep and are only at 140 before the siege has started. Did I miss something that would add significant points?

20-point buy for attributes?
Can we start with any magic items?
Do we get bonuses if we have rainbows and glitter painted on our armor? :-)

Any guidelines for rolling up a character?

This will be my very first Starfinder game. I've played plenty of Pathfinder first edition but I've not even read the Starfinder CRB. I'm planning to read through as much of the CRB as I can before PaizoCon but maybe you guys can give me a bit of advice on where to start.

Male Human

Knowing that Catfolk wouldn't be common in Sandpoint, I had some initial thoughts on the backstory. Will this work?

Tiyuvi is a male Catfolk. He ran away from home as a young kid due to a bad home situation several years ago. (His mom died and his dad became abusive, I know, dark...) He bounced from town to town just living on the streets. He developed his Criminal trait during this time. Eventually he made it to Sandpoint and terrorized the people there with petty crimes. However, one day he stole too much from the wrong person and he had to flee town to avoid getting put into prison forever. While away, he had a crisis of conscious and turned his life around. He's lived the last few years as an honest citizen in various locations. He has always been drawn to Sandpoint and has recently returned with the intention of making things right, if possible. Of course, the events of this AP may interrupt his efforts.

Male Human

Actually, I would like to change my race to Catfolk. Any problems with that?

Male Human

Hmm. That's an interesting idea. I'll look into it.

Male Human

I think your plan sounds good. So we have:

Swashbuckler
Gunslinger/Paladin
Magus
???

I think we probably need a divine healer. We're also short on skills. What other class is someone thinking of?

As for the feat tax rules, the mod, in herolab, won't let me use Martial Mastery. Says that I have to be human.

Male Human

As a swashbuckler, can I use Slashing Grace without having Weapon Focus for the same weapon?

Male Human

Yeah, I'm in that same game with the halfling swashbuckler, he is pretty fun.

I didn't even realize, until I just read this, that I am considering a halfling swashbuckler too... But I think I will have a lot different character. Things are still evolving though.

Male Human

I looked through my books last night and consulted with my son who is a virtual walking encyclopedia of Pathfinder knowledge and I think I've decided on a halfling swashbuckler. Not sure if I'm going to go with a straight up swashy or one of the archetypes. I'm ruminating on the character itself. What kind of personality, etc.

It might take me a couple more days to flesh it out.

When are we wanting to start playing?

Male Human

I am very excited about doing this. I have been waiting a long time for a chance to play RotR. I haven't played any of it and I haven't read any of the books yet so I'm a brand new player (for this AP).

Really looking forward to it.

I would like to use the background skills as well. It could make for better RP.

I need to start thinking about what character to bring. I'll do some of that tonight.

Male Human

Do you mind if we dot in on the gameplay thread so that this shows up in our campaign list?

Male Human

I would love to do this. I've got a level 2 bloodrager and a level 2 wizard that are available for this. Since other people have mentioned their posting rates I'll add that I also can post multiple times per day, even on weekends. I'm also fairly experienced with PbP (28 PbP games completed so far).

I really would like to play this but for the sake of honesty I have to say that I have GM'd this through level 10 as a non-PFS home game. I don't know if it is any different as PFS and I'm confident that I can keep player and character knowledge separate.

I'm noticing an inconsistency with my schedule and I'm not sure who to ask to clear it up. When I view the events, I see an event Friday evening:

Pathfinder Society Scenario #9–15: The Bloodcove Blockade (For Levels 3–7)
Friday evening, 7:00–11:59 pm • Grand Ballroom

And the box next to it has green writing that says "On your schedule". However, the sidebar on the far right doesn't list that game. It lists all my others, but not that one. I've refreshed several times and even clicked on the link to get a printable schedule. That game doesn't show up anywhere.

How do I make sure that I am signed up for that game?

Male Human

You mean with the new template? I'm working on it. I'm hoping to get something up tonight (i.e., the next 3 hours).

Male Human

The posting in the game play thread says that we each get a story feat at character creation. Does that mean we need to pick one of the ones that Melda indicated? That is, one of the feats that has a prerequisite that we could work into our backstory?

Male Human

So we tell you which story feat we are going for and then you arrange circumstances so that we can meet the prerequisite?

Male Human

I have a question about the story feats. How do we meet the prerequisites for a feat? For example, if I wanted the Arisen story feat, how do I meet the prerequisite of "You must have been slain and brought back from the dead, or have the Left to Die or Cursed Birth background". It seems too easy for me to just tell GM Granta, "oh yeah, I died and was brought back to life. Trust me, it happened."

Male Human

Ok. So here's where I'm at with feats.

3rd Improved Initiative
5th Craft Magic Arms and Armor (5th level)
7th Spell Penetration
9th Greater Spell Penetration
11th Destructive Dispel (CL 11)
13th
15th
17th

Toughness?
Expanded Arcana?
Weapon Focus (crossbow)?
Quicken Spell (why not just a rod?)
Spell Focus?
Voice of the Sibyl?

I normally don't plan things out this much in advance because I find that it can be better to react to the unfolding story and how other characters are acting. I consider this plan a "plan" in the sense that it doesn't survive first contact with the enemy. But it seems like a reasonable start.

Now I need to nail down a story feat.

Male Human

Oh wait! I was confused. I have only been talking about the light crossbow. For some reason I thought a light needed a full round. It doesn't. Ok. So I really don't need rapid reload, just like you said.

Thanks for helping me see that.

Male Human

Without rapid reload I need a full round to load the crossbow. That means that I cannot move and attack in the same turn. Won't that always be a hindrance?

Male Human

Working on my feats led me to working on weapons. I feel it is good to have some sort of weapon so I can contribute continuously in combat. I can't use up all of my spells in one encounter and then be useless the rest of the day.

I'm not building for melee combat so I'm looking at ranged weapons. If I go with a crossbow then I don't need a feat to use it but I would want the rapid reload feat soon otherwise I can only go half-speed in combat. If I go with a shortbow then I need to take the weapon proficiency feat. So in either case I need a feat to be useful. The crossbow is 1d8 dmg with a broader crit range. The shortbow is 1d6 dmg with a "20" crit range but a 3x multiplier. In general it seems that finding random arrows (with special abilities) is more likely than bolts.

To summarize:
feats: crossbow vs. shortbow is a wash
damage: a crossbow generates more damage (base dmg and crits)
ammo: "special" arrows are more common than "special" bolts

Based on this I am leaning towards the crossbow but I'm seeking feedback from you guys.

Male Human

I'm planning out my feats and I'm wondering what all of you think of meta-magic feats. Are they worth getting?

Male Human

Are you thinking of running one of these scenarios as a warm up for our characters?

Male Human

BTW, any of you going to PaizoCon this year? I will be there just Friday and Saturday. Have to be back home Sunday for a friend's wedding.

Male Human

Well, I don't want to die over and over again. I like con 13 better.

If we don't do blind fight from the start then I could take Fluid Nature now to protect my soft skin for level 1 and 2 then take Water Sight at level 3.

Thanks for the clarification on rounds per day. Hero Lab was confusing me.

Here's an updated Thalasou.

Male Human

I'm concerned about the 10 con too. I could drop my wisdom to 12 and push my con to 13. I think I like that better.

Male Human

I don't think I've ever used google hangouts but I'm fine with learning something new. I use gmail so I have a google account. Just tell me how to access the hangout.

Male Human

Way too much like The Little Mermaid for me... new approach.

Thalasou liked to go for long swims in the ocean. Once he ran afoul of an angry, mad-at-the-world merman. In that confrontation the merman wounded Thalasou's ankles in an unhealable way (I don't know how, I also don't know why anyone in the Pathfinder world ever dies outside of combat since it is rather simple to get CLW at anytime) . It pains him to walk. Gozreh saw the conflict and thought that the merman was being unkind. He made it up to Thalasou by giving him his powers.

This still needs some work but it's better than the Ariel story I was first thinking of.

Male Human

:-)

My current thinking on the backstory is that while young he encountered a young mermaid, became friends. And of course, when her father heard about it, he prohibited his daughter from being friends with him. As a part of all of this, there was a conflict with the father and he cursed Thalasou with lame feet. The lameness is in his feet and ankles. The pain from walking led Thalasou to spend more time in the water -- swimming wasn't affected by the twisted feet -- thus he became a great swimmer. And the emotional drama of this whole thing awakened the oracle powers.

That first part sounds like a Disney movie...

Male Human

Ok. The Oracle is coming along. I'm back to the Waves mystery and I decided on the Athletic Champion campaign trait. I don't have all of the backstory worked up yet but the idea is Thalasou grew up in a coastal town and has become a champion swimmer.

Male Human

Why will I be going against flat-footed AC? Does concealment give you the flat-footed condition?

Male Human

Whew! This week is Spring Break for my kids so I took the week off for a family fun vacation called "clean the garage"! We ordered an 8 cubic yard (6.1 cubic meters for you non-US peoples) dumpster and filled it to 90% full of junk. Not counting the 5 trips of a loaded Expedition to Goodwill for donating stuff.

But now, the garage is much much cleaner. Just in time for me to setup a large gaming table for my biweekly Ironfang game!

Also, now that this is behind me, I hope to have more time to flesh out my oracle.

I'm coming back around to the waves mystery. It is looking pretty good.

For combat I see my role as (in order):
1) buffing the group (this is why I like bless, an area effect that helps everyone and stacks with everything)
2) debuffing enemies
3) healing, as needed
4) ranged attacks with a ranged weapon

Should I consider damage producing spells or should I leave that to the wizard?

Male Human

I'm working on my known spells for the Oracle and am looking for some advice. Is it better to add bless to my known spell list or wait until I can buy a bless wand and use the known-spell-slot for something else?

Also, for those of you using HeroLab, how do I get the WftC campaign traits into HeroLab?

Male Human

For my oracle I'm thinking of going for a very striking female focusing on social skills. If I use the Intrigue mystery (if allowed), have a high CHR, and use the Charming and Rising Star traits, then I have a lot of bonuses on navigating social type encounters.

Is Pavo also still headed in that direction?

Male Human

Before I get too far down the Intrigue mystery path I should make sure I can use that. GM? It's from Ultimate Intrigue. Is it allowed?

Male Human

Trying to balance a lot of things at the moment so I'm not able to invest as much into character creation as you guys! But I'm working on it. Still working on the Oracle.

What does Max1/2 mean in the skill sheet? Are these just the skills that we intend to put max ranks (i.e., our level) in? Is Unmaxed a skill that we intend to put some, but not all ranks in?

As for the Oracle curse, I'm leaning towards lame. I think speed won't be a factor in this AP.

Have you guys looked at the Intrigue mystery? That might be more useful than Water for me.

Male Human

I don't see the relationship with the waves mystery. Obscuring Mist is on my spell list no matter which mystery I take. Or maybe you are saying that I can get the Water Sight revelation so I can also see in the mist. Is that the benefit?

Male Human

I've got a long ways to go but I'm getting started on my Oracle. I'm leaning towards the Rising Star or Taldan Patriot campaign trait. Any thoughts on that?

Are we serious about pursuing the blind fighting technique? If so, how does the waves mystery help that?

Male Human

Ok. Got the Player's Guide. I'll work on my character in earnest now. BTW, when did we want to start WftC?

The PG indicates that an Oracle might not be a great class. Should I take that seriously? It appears that the only full divine caster that the PG recommends is a cleric. Should I look at going down the cleric route? I've got another cleric character already so I was hoping for something different. I guess I could look at an archetype.

Thoughts?

Oregon, USA seems to be under represented so I'll chime in.

Hillsboro, OR, USA (a suburb of Portland)

Hello, our GM for our Mummy's Mask seems to have disappeared so we are looking for a replacement. We are only on part 2 of the first book but the groups of players is all excited to stay together and keep going on the AP.

You can see the gameplay thread here

If you are interested please reply here or PM me.

Thanks

Male Human

I'll take CMAA. It will be fun to craft stuff.

I like the whole downtime scheme. Can we earn gp with a profession during downtime?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'm in one of the F&F games so I'm happy you guys are taking care of this. Am I the only only who noticed the irony of "faithless and forgotten"?

Male Human

The 2E announcement seems to have made a few people upset to the point of dropping games and even dropping Pathfinder entirely. The announcement has not prompted me to change any of my plans. I am still interested in doing our AP plan that we specified here in this thread. Or, at the very least, getting started with what we know now and possibly changing it later.

Is everyone else still on board or are any of you bailing? It's better to let us all know now rather than later, IMHO.

Male Human

Sounds good to me. I'll start working up the Oracle. We need to wait for the player's guide to get the campaign traits, right?

Male Human

I was looking into the Oracle. Is that a full progression divine caster?

Male Human

Do we have a player's guide to know what the campaign traits are yet?

For HP per level, do we throw out rolled 1s?

Can we take the Rich Parents trait?

If we can afford it, can we start with magic items?

Male Human

I didn't know that Nuthatch was a type of bird until I looked it up. Now I understand the relationship to Scarlet Pimpernel.
