DM /A/M/M

Let's check out the apothecary. That sounds more dangerous :-)

GM

Spoiler:
Merle smiles for the first time in ages. Finally. Someone who wants to cooperate.

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

Merle will keep Jonathan company as usual.

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

"Fortunate for you we were I'd say". "Merle Adair's the name".

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

Since Merle is totally confused about who are the "good" guys, and who are the "bad" guys he will skip his AoO, and concentrate on getting the woman safely out of the carriage.

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

Merle throws caution to the wind and runs towards the wagon, determined to rescue the individual within, or die trying.

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

Merle shakes his head clearing the confusion of a flashback he had to the war, and finds that though his brain might have been elsewhere his body was moving to follow orders...I guess somethings are just done on natural reaction as a soldier.

He hastens to mount the other horse, trying to think of someway to secure the carriage from falling off the edge.

"Whoever is in the carriage". "It is sliding towards a deathly ledge". "Find yourself clear"!

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

I'm finally home from extended travel. I'll try to get caught up over the next couple of days.

I'm starting a two week business trip Monday, and should be able to post most days, but feel free to DMPC my character as required.

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

[ooc]You chose Merle's actions perfectly[/b]

"Thank you you ruffians"Merle almost smiles, as he passes a few coppers off to the children.

"Let's keep looking around Johathan". "Somebody is bound to know something"

1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10 Diplomacy

Merle will also visit the Duchess every Sunday, and take her a sweet, and something to read to pass the boredom. She wasn't cruel or evil, just had her heart in the wrong place.

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

I think Merle is now ready all fancy in his new armor.

Sorry not enough money for my share of the CLW wand after buying this armor. Hopefully next time :-)

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

I see everyone making up a couple of contacts for their characters but can't find out why they are doing so. Can my memory be refreshed without looking back through a million posts...and as a followup question, if I need to make two contacts, could the brave private Waterhouse serve as one of them...after all I owe him?

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

Merle takes the proffered quill, and shakily signs his name to the document. It is obvious that he in accustomed to being accountable for anything but following the orders of someone else.

Working on the level up now.

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

1d10 ⇒ 8 Hit Point Roll

I'll get Merle leveled up tomorrow, and be ready to roll.

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

Merle's mouth opens in shock at the Goblin's act. He is outraged at the soldier's lack of discipline, and turns to reprimand him, when he catches the movement out of the corner of his eye. As the flaming whip snakes his way he is frozen in place, knowing with his soldier's instincts, that there is no way he can act in time to avoid this. To think after all he has experienced he will go out like this...when another movement blurs into his vision off to the left.

Somehow acting with unnatural quickness, Waterhouse throws himself forwards in front of Merle, taking the flaming lash meant for the Soldier. Merle is horrified at the turn of events, but following his instincts and his training, remembers the mission, and heads towards the King's sister, to attempt to remove her from the danger area.

You shall be avenged Waterhouse. You shall be avenged.

Merle will do everything in his power to grab the Duchess, and escape the area.

"Cover us"! "I must get the King's sister out of here"!

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

1d20 ⇒ 11 Sense motive

"It is not my decision to make". "But I will consult with my friends here". "Know that I will be part of that "skeleton crew", to ensure the Duchesses saftey". "I can assure you however, that if you strike this unarmed woman again, no matter the outcome of this release, I shall hunt you down wherever you are and dispense exactly twice as much pain upon you, as you inflict upon her".

"What think you my friends". "Is it time for the bloodshed to end"?

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

Merle puffing for breath, finally reaches the top of the stairs, and witnesses the confrontation.

"Everyone Stop". "Hasn't there been enough killing". "We are here to bring justice to the King's sister...not to deliver him her corpse". "We will take it from here".

Merle runs forward intent on saving the kings sister, and taking her to his king for justice.

FWIW 1d20 ⇒ 17 Diplomacy

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

The ever so charming, and persuasive Merle will give it a shot.

"Yes". "Stop". "Our battle is not with you".

1d20 ⇒ 14 Diplomacy

You want to run through the fire?

I thought the Green guy opened a path through the hedge.

I figure wearing Heavy armor, I have no chance with any of the climb or Acrobatics rolls, and since he made a hole, It shouldn't be to bad. Really no other choice.

I must admit this module must be a challenge to run. It seems as though everyone needs a load of skill points, since there are many skill challenges, and everyone can't have every skill...

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

Merle charges through the opening the thing made in the hedge, intent on laying him low.

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

Merle walks over in front of the officer, and looks him dead in the eye as he speaks. "Why should we trust you"? "Seconds ago you were my enemy, and if not for misfortune, or clumsiness you'd now be dead".

1d20 ⇒ 7 Sense Motive

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

Merle finishes running his finger along his Pickaxe, looking for any damage, and turns to face Jonathan. "Yes". "It can be sad, but you can't dwell on fallen comrades". "They chose to put their lives on the line for the greater good". "If nobody made that choice, then evil, and chaos would win the day". "So...they died a good death". "And, you must learn to place your attention on your mission ahead, and minimizing the deaths of those that matter". "That's what soldiering is about". "Sacrifice and honor...and doing the right thing".

Merle turns to the new arrivals with a bit of embarrassment. "Your words honor me good man, but are perhaps displaced". "If I survived and did good, it was because of the men who gave me orders, not to any leadership skills of my own". "Give me a plan, and I can see it done, but I'm not much on big thinking". "You do honor me though".

Then looking at the squirming Private, Merle points to him and says. "He's with me". "How do you guys want to go about this". "Frontal assault, stealth, or diplomacy".

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

"Now what in blazes is that"? Merle exclaims nodding his head towards the sea, as he sights in another soldier. "INCOMING!" Merle shouts.

While Merle is upset that the others are down, as a soldier, his first duty is to keeping the tower secure...which trumps any personal feelings.

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

1d20 - 2 ⇒ (13) - 2 = 11 Stealth

Merle makes his way back to the lighthouse, grabs up the crossbow and a bunch of bolts, and looks for a higher elevation than ground floor to set up his snipers nest.

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

Merle will attempt to use his Profession: Soldier to point out places they are most likely to attack, and help to barricade those areas more heavily. Then he will attempt to seek out any week spots in their defense, and take up position there.

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18 Profession: Soldier

"Is there a bow, and some arrows lying around anywhere". "I might be able to pick off a few if they show their heads". "If nothing else it will give them something else to worry about".

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

Merle goes looking for more trouble to engage while others take them out.

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

"What is wrong"? "My hands must be sweaty from the humidity".

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 Attack

1d8 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9 Damage

I have two fighter characters on these boards, and neither one can ever hit anything :-)

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16 Poleaxe attack

1d8 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 Damage

"Oh, we'll see whose still standing at the end of this little dance".

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

Merle regards the man who swung at him with disdain. "You are a disgrace to all polearm fighters".

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15 Pickaxe

1d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 PA Damage

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

"We better make this quick". "We've been fortunate so far". He then hangs his hammer, and switches to his more familiar pickax.

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21 attack

1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 Damage.

"Now hold still, and quit struggling".

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

Really going to have to think about improved Grapple.

Merle moves in to grapple the dazed wizard.

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19 CMB

"I got him". "Somebody get a gag".

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

"Who do you thinks in charge here"? "The lady, or that Crackpot upstairs"?

1d20 ⇒ 8 Bluff Assist...

Merle doesn't make eye contact as he speaks, somewhat reducing his effectiveness.

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

Merle follows along willing to let the more gregarious among the group do the talking...He is there to do the fighting...if necessary.

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

"You guys move on ahead of me". "If I get caught, I'll try to provide enough distraction to give you the ability to complete the mission". "If I get caught, hopefully you'll be able to spring me loose somehow". "I'm not a quiet individual".

Boy this module is not real well designed. If you don't have social skills or stealth you're pretty much in trouble. Do they expect you to sneak in a heavily armored army :-)

After the others have left.

1d20 - 2 ⇒ (16) - 2 = 14 Stealth

Well so far so good

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

"No time like the present", Merle says, uncorking and quaffing the potion.

1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9 CLW

And, he smiles for the first time all day, as his wound knits shut. "Wow". "That's a good batch".

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

Merle growls and spits to the side at being outvoted again.

He begins cleaning his weapon on the clothing of one of the fallen guards.

"Wonderful idea". "I'm sure that they won't be missed...they probably just went out on patrol on their own without telling anyone". "So nobody will come looking for them and find us...or release them so that we have to defeat them again..."But why listen to the only soldier in the group, and the only who's ever been on this island". "If you'd listened to me the first time you wouldn't have to be dealing with this issue". "I never thought that I was adventuring with a bunch of panty waist paladins".

Merle stomps off a bit to take a drink of water and catch his breath. He removes the piece or armor around his crossbow wound, snaps off the head, and with a gasp pushes it thought the wound, bringing forth a fresh gush of healthy blood.

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

"And let them escape to warn of our presence". "No". "War is harsh, and we must commit acts that challenge our souls". "If you have no heart for it, then move on ahead, and I'll join you when the grisly act is complete". Merle will coup-de-grace all the prisoners unless stopped.

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

Merle attacks the nearest standing soldier, charging, and/or flanking if possible.

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11 Pickaxe...Flanking...charging?
1d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11 Damage

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

Since the soldier only took a 5' Step am I to assume that Merle got an AoO with his 10' reach?

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16 Pick Axe Attack

1d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 Damage

If that takes him down, Merle will look around for more mayhem to cause. His battle frenzy now in full effect, and his pick-axe a whirling juggernaut of death. The bolt lodged in his side little more than an afterthought. Well, there's a new scar for the collection

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 Pick-axe attack, +2 if he can charge, +2 if he can flank.

1d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11 Damage

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

Merle continues moving forward his mind firmly on his work now.

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17 Attack

1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 Damage

"Be sure to let none escape".

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

"Damn it". "Maybe you'll listen to me next time...if there is a next time".

Merle moves forward to within 10' of one of the soldiers, and swing his mighty pickaxe.

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 Attack

1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 Damage

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

Merle stands in disbelief as they make for the road despite his warnings. Oh well I'm not taking the lead on this fools errand. I'll stay back here so I can run for the woods if I have to...fools....

Merle draws his weapon, steps slightly off the road looking for cover, and awaits the action of the approaching force.

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

"Wait". "Did you not hear my words". "The road is where they will be watching".

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

"I would think that the forests would be unwatched, as it would be as dangerous to the guards as it would be to those using it. The forest is a deterrent in and of itself, therefore I would suggest that route".

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 perception

Merle continues trudging onward, seemingly in a trance. The memories flooding back to him of the horror he experienced here. He hears someone telling him to stay clear of the trees, and numbly obeys.

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

Merle steps from where he had been taking cover, and watches things unfold before him.

"Merle is the name".

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

After helping carry the man to the cave, Merle scouts the rest of the chamber, as the others fuss over the injury. He's been in a few healers beds in his time, but was usually unconscious or drunk, so he feels he is more useful doing otherwise. He is heartened by the man's order...this he understands.

"Form up". "Let's get this done".

Male Human Fighter (Pole Arm Master) / 2: HP-25, AC-20/13/17 (+2 Per, +2 Init, F+5 / R+2 / W+0)

Merle adds his muscle to the attempt, bracing his shoulder beside the straining 7'.

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10 STR Check

And though he slips and slides around, unaccustomed to the environment, he is able to add just enough oomph to move the boulder.

"Pull him out"! "Pull him out"! Merle shouts, bubbles bursting from his mouth.

Merle frowns in concentration. "Not like this I haven't". "We always took a more frontal attack". "Still...something's not right".

Merle quaffs his potion, and jumps in with the others. When he sees the trapped Burton, he rushes to see if he can assist in any way
