Cool concept! As for ruleset, I'm partial to 1st edition. I've tried 2nd a couple of times here on the boards, and it seemed a bit awkward each time. Maybe it's better face-to-face, but I didn't get the warm and fuzzies. But, I'd give it another go I you went with 2nd edition.

Happy new year and hope everone was able to enjoy the holidays with friends and family! Sorry , I saw this re-activate a while back,but november and December were crazy for me, forgot all about it! I'll review the game play and get back to it!
Had an impromptu week off with the missus due to a favor from a friend watching my kids and providing access to a nice resort condo! Now that my SO and I are sick of each other again, I'm able to get back into the swing of things. Expect a post tomorrow!

Terapin has reminded me of something that may be of interest to you , Parrot, in your search for a simpler way of doing things. I was in a game here that implemented E7, a dm-created variant of the E6 system. Basically, the characters advanced to level 6, or 7 or in our case 8th level , then after that whenever they'd get a level, they would instead be awarded a feat. I'm not fully aware of all of the bells and whistles but here's a summary:link
I was curious about lava, and came across this very comprehensive, and free, guide on the subject : link
Lolygert's eyes widen in ragin' surprise as he lifts in to the air and is deposited into the pit of lava. Pain washes over , into and through his body as he instinctively stands and leaps or runs out of the pit! Gobs of cooling lava fly in all directions as he shakes himself like a dog, trying to rid himself of the burning substance! He settles his baleful gaze on the unholy priest, his teeth clenched in pain and rage, growling something that sounds something like, "You're gonna wish you didn't do that!!!" His sword seems to glow more red from it's bath in the lava, cutting a red smear through the air towards the priest of Orcus!
Yeah, don't beat yourself up too much, Parrot.
As for changes to the game, I selfishly would want to continue with PF1e until Lolygert raises Orcus' head in victory! But, ultimately I'm up for whatever you decide is best for you! Al
His nearby foes vanquished...or rather squished, Lolygert turns to find himself yet more evil-doers to slay! He spies a nearby priest and in a blaze of speed....attacks!
Lolygert was in the process of stepping up on the Unholy Priest , when the acolyte got in his way. He glances down at the ruin of the other Acolyte, and raises a furious eyebrow at the Acolyte in front of him, "Really?" he growls. Then with a shrug, the redly glowing sword rises and falls...
At first Lolygert frowns when the demon disappears, muttering, "Unsporting sod!" Still, he had cultists to chop into little pieces, so he decided to make lemonade...or rather cult-ade? Chuckling to himself, he set upon the nearest cultist... His sword takes on a glow mirroring the lava behind him, a glowering , baleful red. As he brings it around, red electricity arcs and sizzles along the blade. A tattoo high on his chest also bursts into red light, casting Lolygert's face in brief , terrifying red-tinged shadow.

Yeah apologies, a big storm knocked out my power till mid week. then it was catching up with work and supporting my wife and girls as the got read for dance recitals....whew what a week, but back to normal! Thanks for the bot, bed!
Lolygert gazes at the horrible door, a frisson of fear flickering at the back of his skull. Absentmindedly, he slips his flagon from his belt, bringing it to his lips as it quickly fills with something potent. Sloshing the harsh beverage around in his mouth ,he spits it violently towards the door, banishing any fear he may have begun to feel. Rolling his shoulders, he plucks a potion from his bandolier and quaffs it in one gulp, grimacing at it's bitter taste. His skin takes on a mottled white texture. Holding up his arm, he mutters, "Birch !"
With a grunt, he steps forward to stand beside the crazy dwarf, allowing the rage to build up within.
Lolygert surveys the room, his lip curling in derision, commenting to Bedlam, "Friggin' Orcus-ers, giving real metal-heads a bad name!" He takes up position near the big double doors, in case any of the Orcus-borders come back while the others investigate the lockers.
Lolygert smiles absentmindedly at Bedlam's antics, and his own joke. Then he shakes his head a bit. That encounter with the weird , but beautiful woman must have addled his wits somewhat. It's been as if someone else has been controlling him, quite effectively, he must admit! But, it was all a bit disconcerting. Feeling the frown on his forehead, he laughed at himself, shook his head and taking a pull from his flagon, declared to no one in particular, "I'm back!" He studiously ignored the concerned look Tam flung his way and declared, "South! Yes, an excellent idea! "
Lolygert rolls into the room after Bedlam and smiles widely, "Why it's a partyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeee?!?!??!" he says, his voice pitching up as he sees the beautiful woman (good) with the bleeding mouth (bad). He was about to unhitch his flagon and join in the festivities but instead earnestly addresses the woman, "You know, I know a good barber in 'Ferry that could take care of that for you. I had a really sore tooth a while back , and he just popped it out. Good as new!" All the while, his eyes are darting here and there as new and interesting and disturbing images manifest before his eyes.
"Who you callin' a barbarian? I'm one of Cayden's Chosen! " Lolyger grumbles, but he does follow the dwarf closely, so as not to miss out on any fun!
Lolygert looked down at the pozole then over at Tam, who was furiously shaking her head. With a shrug, he raised his flagon and poured out a tribute to the fallen soldier, then dug in. Surprised by the flavourfulness of the dish, he pondered a suitable drink. The nodding he filled his flagon with a fruity mead and finished the dragon's dish. Later, he enjoyed his reunion in da'Ferry with friends and paramours, but was excited to set off to the new-to-him city of Magnimar! On the voyage, he proves annoyingly solicitous towards the mother-to-be, mostly offering her sips of ginger beer for her nausea, and even awkwardly offering to build her a nest, before beating a hasty retreat when faced with her terrible glare! As Magnimar came into view, he marveled aloud, "It's so big!"
Lolygert watches as his friends each take their turn venturing into the Dragon's dungeons, returning with this and that. He knows his turn is coming, and so fortifies his mind with an assortment of beverages frothing up in his flagon. When his turn comes, he willingly follows Anzath into the depths, nervously looking at his friend out of the corner of his eye, a bit discomfited by the bargain she'd struck. Sipping a light Andoran wheat ale, he listens to Aragnak's spiel , his eyes wandering over the contents of the treasure room. Smacking his lips as he drains the dregs, he lets his flagon hang from one finger as he considers the Dragon's offer. "Let's get something out in the open, Dragon. I'm loyal to my friends first above all....ya, even Cayden. He's a good sort, he don't mind. And he won't be minding me takin' yer boon, cause he knows in my heart that I ain't yer plaything. Yeah, I'll take on yer aid, if it means I can help my friends delve deep and root out the evil down under ol' Rappan! But mark my words, Dragon, we'll stay true to the bargain....you better too!" He waves his free hand, "I got's some decent armor, but I'll see what you've got. I'd be more interested in something that made me stronger!" Looking down at his flagon, Lolygert causes a fiery dragonish brew to bubble up. He holds it up, and takes a big gulp, then offers it to Aragnak, "Seal the deal!"

Lolgert looks across the table and notices Bedlam doing his old 'talking to his invisible Parrot' thing. He heaves his completely naked rib at the dwarf , shouting, "Yeah, but you smell worse than chopped liver!"
Lolygert watches the other's clothes transform and excitedly draws the magical cloak over his shoulder. Then he furrows his brow, thinking furiously about what wonderful things he could be wearing....but nothing came to mind. He's worn the same outfit almost his entire life, he thought, trying to find some inspiration. Then it began to come, outfits and costume he's seen on others; jesters, courtiers, whores and nobles. Each as they came to his mind, he shook his head and went on to the next recollection. Unbeknownst to him, his recollections were being implemented by the magic of the cloak, and he was performing a rapid fire quick-change demonstration ! A discreet cough from Tam brought Lolygert from his reverie and his journey back through memory. His last recollection had unwisely been of the amusing outfit worn by a performing Monkey he had watched during his time in Riddleport. Looking down, he saw he was wearing a pair of purple and yellow striped pantaloons with matching doublet. He could feel the funny little hat on his head, completing the ensemble. "Aw, sheet..." he muttered, his clothes returning to normal, "I ain't ever gonna figure this out." he complained. Tam patted him on the shoulder, and said simply, "Just be yourself, Sir." Lolygert smiled at her and as inspirationg hit him and he began to slowly spin around, the cloak spreading out, slowly transforming into a magnificent cape, trimmed with fine black fur. Lolygert likewise was wearing black leather pants that accentuated his long, lean legs and narrow waist. At his waist, a belt bucked by a wide silver buckle adorned with the face of a raging beast. A fine white shirt , sleeves casually rolled to the elbow, a few buttons undone to allow a peek at his manly chest hair. A black leather vest, carved with images of many wild beasts, closed with silver buttons matching his belt buckle. Most amazingly, his hair, usually as wild as Lolygert when raging, was caught back tight against his head with a simple strand of black leather, a fairly long pony tail extending towards the floor. Standing, Lolygert still exuded the wildness within, just more restrained...and somewhat noble. Then he broken into a wide smile and asked everyone, "How'd ya like this?" Later, he was initially annoyed at Tam's solicitousness, but then gave in and allowed her her duty. But he then saw it as a bit of a game, for his appetite as usual was prodigious and the poor lady struggled to keep up. Finally, the dragon-man made his proposal. Lolygert listened to his friends, gnawing on the rib of some beast, savoring the richness of the sauce. He laid his fierce gaze on that of the dragon-man, weighing his feelings both for adventure, his loyalty to his friends, his desire to see the bottom of the Dungeon....the glory of killing Orcus! And he thought, once that's done...maybe some extra glory in killing the Dragon! Standing, he reached for a goblet, glancing at Tam to make sure she's okay-ed it. Receiving her nod of approval, he raised it and exclaims, "The dragon lays a meaty prize at our feet! I say we pick it up and sup until we burst! Glory for us! Glory for the Dragon! Death to Orcus!" he takes a great gulp of whatever was in the goblet, then throws the vessel to the side, "Great party, ya scaly bastard!"
Lolygert ignores the histrionics of both Anzath and Aragnak, rolling hs eyes at his new Ranger and making the 'talk, talk, talk' gesture with his hand. "A new name,eh? " he askes, pondering, "Never named a lady before....lemme think." He motions her to follow him, and he clasps his hands behind his back and ponders while he walks. He somehow manages to look remarkably like his much more intelligent friend Tragershen as he pondered....and pondered. Suddenly, when he and the ranger had walked along the shore a short while, he stopped and turned to the Rangers. His face solemn, he spoke "Kneel.". When she did, he drew his sword and lightly touched her on each shoulder, "Rise, my new friend. I dub thee Tam Blindarrow! Tam was my mother' name, and you remind me of her somewhat. And you made that amazing shot to join our team! " He then looked at her shyly, "Do you like it?"
Lolygert blinks as Anzath goes full on Dragon-cultist-warmonger, then looks back at the ranger, "Don't mind her, she's just putting a show on for the grumpy dragon...else he'd eat all of us, I think." He pulls the ranger around to stand beside her, "Here, lass...let's have yer name then."
Lolygert spins with the lance's impact, his furious sword held high, aiming to dispatch the remaning greycloaked ranger. But, the ranger's heartfelt plea penetrated the red haze of his rage. The fatigue hit him, as it always does, like a hammer. But he still held the sword high, as he contemplated the woman and her request. A quick glance showed him that the knight was no longer a threat. He brought the sword down slowly, and pressed it up against her neck under the chin, "The battle is won. Your lordling dead...under this blade. You offer your life...but it was already mine for the taking. ": he says, but then continues solemnly, "But I accept your offer, you will swear your skills and life to me until I free you from your oath. "
Lolygert grunts as Lingright falls to pieces, then spies the nearby rangers. With a quick jump he's airborne again, dropping to his feet right in front of the nearest ranger. With a roar, Lolygert raises his furious blade, crackles of electricity snapping out at the air along it's cutting edge!
Lolygert laughs at Bedlam attacking the ship, then gives his buddy a wave and floats up and over the wall, looking for someone appropriate to attack!
Same here, did a demo game and the under otari adventure for 2nd Ed...
5ed d&d is fun.
<slow, very slow, golf clap>
With a whoop, Lolygert takes to the skies, then swoops down an plucks Bedlam up by his armpits. Lolygert fakes flying lower and lower, "Ooof, yer a hefty package, Bed!" then he laughs and gains altitude. Following his friends directions, Lolygert unceremoniously dumps Bedlam to the ground. Then he bring his fingertips to his nose, and coughs at the horrible Beldam pit smell clinging to them, "Ah, you stink! " he declares, before ascending again to figure out where he's most useful.
Lolygert does a quick check of his gear, making sure nothing fell off when he almost died again. He quaffs a potion, causing his skin to take on a rougher appearance (Barkskin), then he eyes up the extra potion of flying, "I love to fly, anyone mind if I use this up? Then I can keep up with Mr Grumpy there" he says , indicating the Mighty Aragnak. If not one does, he also quaffs the flying potion, a huge grin on his face as he anticipates the wonder of flight again!
Lolygert rose under the tender minstrations of Aurora and the less so attentions of his pal Bedlam. Sitting up he looked across at the body of his latest foe, and sighed at the moment of glory missed. As the exploration of the hobgoblins' hillfort continued, Lolygert followed the others, sulking, kicking stones and looking sullen and disappointed in himself. The trek through the forest cheered him somewhat and Bedlam's question seemed to fully bring Lolygert back to his usualy Lollyness, "Aye, Bed, they'll be ready for us I think!" he replied with a grin. Pulling a potion from his bandolier , he quaffed it in one gulp, examining himself to see the results.
Not satisfied, he quickly drinks another.
Smacking his lips, he tosses the empty vials into a nearby bush, then brings his flagon to his lips, drinking deep of the heady mead within, "I'm sure they'll be spoiling fer a fight after the drubbing we gave'em back at the Hob's fort...should be fun!"
Lolygert chuckles at his opponent, "Nice one!" , then with a growl tries to return the favor!
With incredible speed and incredible anger, Lolygert ignores the cannon-fodder hobgoblins and sprints to engage one of the leaders....the strongest looking of course!
Lolygert pokes the inert body of the priest with his sword, then looks about for more enemies. When none present themselves, he looks about with hooded eyes, and his gaze comes to rest on the suddenly destroyed first gate of the hobgoblin encampement. He dimly realizes that his smelly little friend must have done the damage, but he couldn't see him....but he could smell him. With a growl, Lolygert follows Bedlam's stench and sprints at the gate leaping up to grab the top and lever himself over...
