I don't know about CoC, but search "lovecraft in the bath" if you want the most ridiculously cute commentary on Lovecraft stories, lovecraft plushies nonwithstanding. There's a ton of Lovecraft themed boardgames out there: Arkham Horror, for one, Eldritch Signs, or (my favorite) Shadows of Brimstone (more influenced than themed).

I always found crevasses to be the bane of story progression. I'm not a fan of spells like web, solid fog, stinking cloud, pit or black tentacles either, on the whole. Slow combat down, and muck things up for the fighters.
