Appearance:

Hammas is a female half-orc, though the human side isn't very evident. Pig-like tusks, enlarged ears, and strong coloring leave her looking full orc, and a bestial one at that. Flaring nostrils and twitching ears further cement her status as a wild creature, almost a beast herself, in the minds of those who meet her.

To those in the know however; she appears as one of those hunters, man or orc, who travel the rocky wastes of Belkzen alone.

Height: 5'10"
Weight: 208lbs

Personality/background:

Some become trappers because they can't stand civilization, or civilization can't stand them. Some because they are hiding from something. And some because they'd just rather be alone with Gozreh. Hammas falls into the last group, and perhaps, if we're being completely honest, a bit of the first as well. Trunau is about accepting as an area can be, and there are plenty of half-orcs around, but that doesn't mean people don't share a preference for those with white, or at least non-green, skin.

This became more apparent as childhood turned to adolescence. Not that those around her were cruel, but children will play with the girl who can find the ripest berries and men will drink with the hunter who can follow a wounded deer on a moonless night, but suitors don't bring flowers to the girl whose ears swivel or whose tusks threaten to blind those who lean close, and that hurts.

And so, Hammas drifted more into the company of those wild men and women who roam the wild moors and rocky crags. Her talents made it easy. Hunting brought in meat and money, both of which are always needed, in large half-orc families especially, and earned respect from everyone, though no offers to join at the Rose's alter.

Central to Hammas' life is her family. To understand her you have to understand where she came from. As long as her home exists, with loving parents and noisy siblings, all is right with the world. It is the rock that anchors her.

Two half-orcs met and, like what happens to most of us, decided that they rather enjoyed one another's company and enjoyed it enough to not kill each other or the squalling brats when they inevitably came along. More children came, and more children, and some how a few more snuck in, which Hammas' father is firmly, or at least loudly, convinced that someone simply dropped off and forget to return for, surely he wasn't responsible for all of these. To which her mother would loudly reply that yes he was and had he forgotten how it came about. Ah well then, perhaps you could remind me how its done, and soon after another child would sneak, or rather come lustily wailing, into the house to join to a near dozen others.

To the credit to Halgra and the rest of community, most of those children are still alive today. The oldest was killed defending the wall against an attack, one was stolen in raid, and two others died of illness, but that isn't bad for the frontier.

In a crowded, noisy environment like that a middle child has two options for getting by, get louder or be quiet. Hammas went quiet. Since others had first call on attention, she learned how to solve problems herself. When someone was looking for a target to harass, Hammas just wasn't around.

Time in the wilds, with the chance and need for careful consideration that trapping provides, strengthened this tendency. In group conversations, she tends to hold back. Waiting until everyone else has finished. When she does speak, sudden pauses give an odd rhythm to it. This isn't to say that she is shy or retiring. One on one, she can become quite chatty. Willing to listen for hours and share stories about the things she sees. In general though, Hammas is most comfortable expressing her feelings through action, which she doesn't hesitate to do. A firm handshake, a warm hug, or light punch to the arm.

Today Hammas is a respected, if junior, part of the trappers and hunters that make up the town's first line of defense. Her senses have led her choosing/being assigned to a rugged section of the hills to the west. That's what being able to follow a scent over stones that hold no tracks gets you.

In keeping with this, she travels with a somewhat tamed boar named Garm, who is better able navigate the difficult terrain and attracts less attention than a more traditional pack animal. A tusked green-skin with a pig doesn't generate much excitement. A woman with a mule would.

Known Ally:

Sara Morninghawk. As owner of Trunau's smithy, Sara is an critical person to know, and Hammas is just the sort of person Sara likes, competent, honest, and doesn't insist on trying to talk in a loud forge. Sara and Agrit's unusual, but seemingly happy, marriage has led the quiet ranger to start seeking advice on romance.

Unknown Ally:

As it turns out, someone has noticed Hammas, and thinks she's perfect. A young orc by the name of Grishnákh has noticed the hunter that roams outside his tribe's territory. The others may be too dense to notice, but he's investigated some of the camps she's made. That non-descript figure on the hills is female. A strong, healthy, and most importantly, unclaimed female. Grish has taken to voluntarily patrolling that section of hills, which allows him to keep other's in the tribe from finding out, as well as leaving tokens of affection in areas she's likely to visit.

Known Enemy:

The Bone-Fist tribe doesn't often come into conflict with Trunau. The town is just a bit too far to be convenient. That doesn't stop a the occasional group of young males from trying it to gain prestige though. One of these raids caught Hammas' brother Nisk out a little too far from help. The family doesn't know his fate, but hope for death rather than the alternative. One pride of place on Hammas' tusk necklace is set from a warrior from the tribe who thought the humans couldn't find him in the dark.

Unknown Enemy:

Just as Hammas activities in the wild gained her an admirer, they also bought her a bitter enemy. One of the other town hunters by the name of Darien had a found a nice side-line in selling goods and information to the orcs tribes. Once it was decided that Hammas was best suited for the rocky areas, he lost any believable excuse to travel there and his income dwindled. Darien was willing to let it go. His wife, however, was not.

Posting: I can post once, sometimes multiple times a day. I'm currently running a pbp here on the forums. I usually am on in the morning (6-9) and evening (6-9) pacific time.

GM, you said equipment list is fine for now, but would you like me to update any of the other crunchy bits?

It's usually like this in AP recruitment threads. A week seems like good amount of time, then the applicants start coming, and some of them look really good. Then more come, and more, and soon you realize that you could do nothing but run pbp games all day and you still would not have room for all of the excellent players crowding around your electronic table with puppy-dog eyes.

It is a good pain.

Remember, this if for posterity so, be honest.

Sunday seems so very far away.

Backstory:
Some become trappers because they just can't stand civilization, or civilization can't stand them. Some because they are hiding from something. And some because they'd just rather be there than anywhere else. Hammas falls into the last group, and perhaps, if we're being completely honest, a bit of the first as well. Varisia is reasonably accepting, but that doesn't mean the people don't share a preference for those with white, or at least non-green, skin over the more olive flavored, especially in the lands around Korvosa.
This became more apparent as childhood turned to adolescence. Not that those around her were cruel, but children will play with the girl who can find the ripest berries and men will drink with the hunter who can follow a wounded deer on a moonless night, but suitors don't bring flowers to the girl who's green, and that hurts.

And so, Hammas drifted more into the company of those wild men and women who roam the dark forests and wild moors. Her talents made it easy. Hunting brought in meat and money, both of which are always needed in frontier families, large half-orc ones especially, and earned respect from everyone, though no offers to join at the Rose's alter.

Ah, you're right, her family. Yes, that is important. Two half-orcs met and, like what happens to most of us, decided that they rather enjoyed one another's company and enjoyed it enough to not kill each other or the squalling brats when they inevitably came along. Being in a village that, like most villages, followed Erastil and put great stock in such things as 'commitment' and 'tradition' the two got married. Ah well then, perhaps you could remind me how its done, and, inevitably, soon after another child would sneak, or rather come lustily wailing, into the house.

And no, they are all, well most of them anyway, alive and doing well. Stop assuming that everyone's families had to have died or that their home life was terrible. Hammas' was quite good and if you visit her home you'll see that they are still doing well and are well liked by their community. Few things cement a family's place in an Erastilite community like a near dozen healthy children, orcs tend to large families, though having someone willing to take all the night guard duties doesn't hurt. That's what her father is by the way, the night watchmen. Her mother raises children.

How does Gaedren factor into all of this? Well that is both a tragic and triumphant story. When Hammas got older, she decided to strike out on her a bit, see the world and, perhaps, find someone to settle down with. Well the first place for a country girl to go is the grand city of Korvosa. It is quite a sight after all. There she meet the one who would one day save her life, the half-elf alchemist Alonna.

Alonna knew the city and could turn ordinary things into substances that were almost magic, but had never really traveled beyond the city walls. Hammas was fascinated by the mundane magic of alchemy, and had stories of the dark woods and untamed mountains where giants and dragons ruled. What started as a friendly business relationship soon became more, and well it did, for not all of Korvosa is kind.

His name was Pavo, or so he called himself, and he knew a mark when he saw it. A kind word here and smile there and a foolish country girl will think it's love, and a girl in love will stand stand on the corner and take the bag a lover's friend will hand her.

There wasn't enough proof to arrest her, but she'd been marked and Pavo was gone. And then a kind soul offered her a salve. 'Drink isn't enough for what you're feeling. Shiver's what you need. Take a bit. No, wouldn't think of it. A gift to a girl in need.' And that is all it took. Lamm was always good at spotting a potential customer.

Alonna could sense a change in her friend. What happened next is really something you'll have to ask her about. Hammas isn't too clear about much of what happened, and doesn't like to talk about the part she is. Long and short of it is Alonna got Hammas clean, and gave up plenty to do it. Now there's just the matter of finding that kind soul of a Lamm.

As for her personality, you're about to meet her, so why not ask her yourself.

Crunch can be adjusted quickly when/if needed. Hopefully Alonna will be along soon.

After the conversation goes back and forth for a while, Hammas stands and gestures to Alonna, Why don't we check out this carnival and mull things over a bit. To Jeyvara and Zora, Care to join us? We'll make a night of it.

Alright everyone, let's head to the carnival and see what we see. Might give us some perspective on the potential job. Who's with me!

OH. HOLY. CRAP!

Long story short, I wrote a post two weeks ago monday saying I would likely be AFK for the next two weeks. I posted this on the discussion threads of all my campaigns, and apparently the goblins ate everything. So I am currently freaking out a little bit. A thousand apologies may my house be turned into a dungheap.

Anyway, I honestly thought everybody knew.

Daughter of a guard, Hammas doesn't care for vigilantes, bullies, or criminals. The blame is shared, so the punishment should be also. The thief shouldn't have stolen and the boys shouldn't have damaged property. Both pay half, in coin or labor.

Hearing the one-sided conversation, Hammas whispers to Alonna, Maybe talking about explosions in the inn isn't such a good idea. Time for catching up later. To Zora, Well met, I'm Hammas. Alonna and I have been companions for a while.

Heading out for a funeral, bot as need be. Alonna, if you think Hammas would do something, feel free to play her.

Take on the Ardoc family? Bad idea.

Hammas meets Alonna's look with a shrug. Rather hunt bandits or poke around Hook Mountain, but if you're interested, sure. Let's do it. Why not ask the Varisian if she wants in. If she knows the city we could use the help.

To the other half-elf, I'm with you.

Let's get rolling, and may the slaying commence!

Looking at Alonna, What do you think? I'm not too keen to visit Kaer Maga, or get into someone else's dispute, but that's me.

To the gnome, Counteroffer. Right now those secrets aren't doing you any good. You tell us about a place you've been interested in, but unable to get to. We retrieve some things for you, or maybe find a safe way for you to get there yourself.

Shrugging to Alonna and the newcomer, Seemed like a reasonable assumption to me. Let's try the gnome then I guess.

Heading over the the bookish gnome, He says you're the man to talk to about legends and such. Say, is anything bothering him? I've never known a barman who didn't know gossip and like sharing it.

As the maid brings their drinks Hammas thanks her. To Alonna, Drink up. Minty Jack is just the thing to end a good day.

To Alonna's question, Well, they say drinking alone is a bad sign, and this sounds like how a lot of my dad's stories start. Got that tanglefoot bag or is it on Freewind? Hammas shifts to make it easier to draw her bow, but otherwise remains as she is.

1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20

Hammas' ears twitch as they catch the mens' conversation. Ya, I caught that. No wonder he said to sit outside a tavern if you're bored. Curious what that mention of a carnival was about. Pretty small place for a troupe to stop, and out of the way too.

While Alonna looks outside, Hammas speaks quietly to the barmaid and hands her four silver coins, Two mugs of applejack, with some fresh mint if you have any, and two house dinners.

Sitting across from her friend, Hammas leans her walking stick against the table and laughs. You're an odd one. I told you not to worry about it and meant it. Now, no more talk of money, except of 'ow rich we'll be when we find the giant's gold.

Watching the rest of the room, Hammas nudges Alonna with her foot, Our meal may not be too fast, or quiet. Someone is looking for trouble. Her gaze indicating the man dressed like a sailor.

Glancing at Alonna, Hammas gestures with her head towards the barmaid. Approaching her unobtrusively, something she does very well, Hammas asks for the barkeep. We're looking for the owner, if he's around, and a cold drink for our thirst.

The first I think. Having met quite by accident during one of Alonna's jaunts, Hammas returned with her to Korvosa. Where Alonna decided the time was right to sell everything and embark on a life of permanent adventure. Since then, the two have traveled together. Alonna tutoring Hammas in the ways of alchemy, and Hammas lending Alonna her wilderness skills.

My best thought on why they would be headed to Turtleback ferry is to investigate rumors of treasure caches left over from the giant invasion several years ago.

Female N Half-Orc Ranger 1 | HP: 12/12 | AC: 15 (112 Tch, 13 Fl) | CMB: +4, CMD: 17 | F: +4, R: +4, W: +2 | Init: +2 | Perc: +8, SM: +2 | Speed 30ft | Active conditions: None.

Yes, because midge the meek is such an intimidating person.

I think Hammas wouldn't really think much of it. Big family without a lot of resources you learn to share, or go the opposite and never let anyone touch your stuff, seen 'em both.

So Alonna, we are traveling to Turtleback Ferry from Korvosa, and we most recently passed through X where we Y.

Quite. Korvosa's a likely place for a village girl to wander. It is 'the city' after all, and who better to ask about arrows than an elf-kin? Their initial jaunt would like been along the lines of, 'Help me find X, and I'll show you how to use it.'

Yay! Hammas has a friend. ^_^

1d10 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 51d10 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

There, that should be everything. Meek certainly isn't the flaw I would have thought of, but it fits her really well. Looking forward to playing with everyone.

Alonna, Hammas is definitively a wanderer, but dislikes being alone for too long. She's used to having people around. My guess is they met and connected over a shared interest in alchemy. Hammas has the Alchemical Knack trait and was probably looking for supplies and/or advice on how to get some of the trickier alchemical arrows to work properly. Whether this was before or after the sale of the shop I leave to you.

Yes you do. Alchemists count their levels in the class as their caster level for all CL requirements, such as dispelling and item creation. You can take Brew Potion at level 3.

Not much time to post, just wanted to pop in, everything will be updated this evening. Anyone else from Varisia is a good fit for Hammas, though I can see helping the Captain track down the first mate.

Thanks for terrain update GM.

GM Tallgrass, opps.

Forgot to update the level number. Everything is correct.

As we seem to be lacking arcane, would you like me to present a Slyph wizard(Wind listener/Diviner) for consideration? As you stated a preference for core races, she could be turned into a human winter witch without too much difficulty. That might help you out Alex Mack.

*edit The ranger's will save should be +3, instead of +2, but I think that's the only other mistake. mistake.

Hammas is a female half-orc, though it would be hard to tell by looking. Pig-like tusks, enlarged ears, and strong coloring leave her looking full orc, and a bestial one at that. Flaring nostrils and twitching ears further cement her status as a wild creature, almost a beast herself, in the minds of those who meet her, at least to those who don't know the wild.

To those in the know however; she appears very much like any other successful trapper who would brave the wilds of Varisia alone and, since that is the company she keeps, that is what really matters.

personality/background:

Some become trappers because they just can't stand civilization, or civilization can't stand them. Some because they are hiding from something. And some because they'd just rather be there than anywhere else. Hammas falls into the last group, and perhaps, if we're being completely honest, a bit of the first as well. Varisia is reasonably accepting, but that doesn't mean the people don't share a preference for those with white, or at least non-green, skin over the more olive flavored.

As for her personality, you're about to meet her, so why not ask her yourself.

Answers to questions

1. I typically post 2-3 times a day. Before work, during lunch, and before bed.

2. Three. One updates multiple times a day, the other once a day or so, and the third every few days. I can handle any schedule, but prefer 1/day or more.

3. Character is in Varisia because she grew up here. Overall motivation: see new things, gain wealth, find love, settle down, etc. Quite normal actually. Current goal: Learn/obtain magic. Having recently obtained a minor magical item from a Shoanti shaman, payment for killing a troublesome pair of ogres, Hammas is fascinated by the idea of finding her own magic. In the meantime, other's magic, in the form of items, will do, especially if it allows her to change shape.

From the Ultimate Campaign Background Generator, I have learned that...

Hammas is the middle of triplets with three older siblings and four younger siblings.

She has tried, and failed, at serious romantic relationships several times.

Anyone who is interested, I can use the background tables in UCamp, to generated a background. It's pretty interesting.

I wish to apologize to everyone for disappearing. It was rude and unkind, however unintentional. You see, I simply forgot. There's a long story that involves family drama, a disputed inheritance, dying matriarchs, and a long drive across the Nevada desert accompanied by an 80S soundtrack, but really, the heart of the story is rather unoriginal.(I swear on my collection of holy books, everything it's all true.)

Just wanted to pop back in to apologize and give people some idea of what happened. Sorry, and thanks for letting me play with you.

P.S. I remembered when one of the guys from our RL group tracked me down and suggested doing a skype session during the summer holiday. That got me thinking Hmm, if Skype doesn't work, we could use the Paizo website to... Oh crap.

Hammas carefully edges forward, all senses alert, with a tight grip on her spear, ready to attack anything that moves. Stealth moving forward until I can see the entire room, or anything that would cause her to pause.

Congratulations on the job. Will you consecrate a shrine to Abadar? I myself am sending applications out into the void. Here's hoping.

What's down the east tunnel? That's where Hammas was headed as there didn't seem to be enough room for everyone in the west.

As Roga waves the mask, That was quick and bloody work. Let's not let it 'appen to us. Hammas will begin quietly moving down the east tunnel.

Replying to Inuki, Wait up. Don't go on by yourself.

To the others, Think we should leave someone up here or all go in? Jutmon, Sevrina can keep watch right? Nareth, Jutmon, wanna take the east with me? Hammas carefully secures the chain to her back, and readying the broad-bladed boar spear, before tying the rope to a nearby tree and dropping down the hole. Moving slightly east to make room, she waits for the others before heading down the tunnel.

Hammas rolls her eyes at Roga's actions, but they were out of they way for certain now. So, fair enough.

As the bard prepares to crawl inside, Be careful, really careful. That hole smells like death. You give a shout and we'll pull you out right quick. Assuming they use a setup similar to before, Hammas will take hold of the rope, ready to Inuki out fast as possible.

Tying the prisoners to the tree, Hammas warns them. Don't get fidgety or distracting. We're likely to be a might twitchy for the next while.

Giving Roga, Nareth, and Sergei a chance to size the situation up. Well, what'cha think?

Well, best get to it then.

Heading back to the prisoners, Alright, everybody up. Once everyone seems to be ready, Hammas starts leading the prisoners towards the tree.

Seeing the tension in her companions, Hammas tries to lighten the mood. Roga, why'd you have to poke 'oles in another perfectly good plan? Keep listening to you and we'll all make it out of this alive. Wagon's gonna take too long to fix, so let's just all head to the tree, keep 'em tied up and deal with whatever's down there. Other stuff can come after that, deal?

To Nareth and Sergei, 'Ey now. Let's not be disagreeing in front of the prisoners. If the Stag Lord killed your girl then you have every right to his 'ead, but first things first. We settle things 'ere. Sounds like ya both have more than enough pain, no need to compare.

To Inuki, What'cha think? Shall we dig the nice lady out of her hole tonight?

I know it's winter, but would Hammas have noticed any toxic plants that are still viable? I'm thinking we spike the lord's drink. ^_^ Not a paladin this time, so I can use poison.

I don't think we have time to fix the wagon first. Waiting a day or two before going after her doesn't sound like a good idea.

Makes no difference to me how we do it, so long as he ends up dead and none of us join 'im. Sergei, you said vengeance a few times, what's your deal with the Stag Lord?

To the group as a whole, Hey, I've a thought, might be crazy, but I think it could work. We've got this password, the liquor, and two people well known to the fort crew. What if we just rode down and pretended to be part of the gang. If anyone asks what happened to the boss here, we tell 'em the truth. There was a fight, and she lost. If we show up with tribute and booze, can't see them objecting too strongly.

As 'Drone' answers the questions, Thanks, that should be a mighty help to us. If you were us, how would you try to get in without getting killed?

To the first, Grigori, Varisian? I'm with ya. 'Ard to not be fond of your own, so let's see what we can do for that 'ead for yours. Tell me about the fort and I'll speak for ya. How many are there, what are they like, any that might be willing to turn on the boss? Is your mother still there? What are the 'cursed ones'? The more you tell the better. Also, what do you think of the other two 'ere? The real thing though is Stag Lord. Anything and everything you know. How bad a drunk is 'e?

To the girl, Hammas chuckles and gives her a smile. 'Ey now. Seeing as 'ow my own father is one they can't be too bad. Kind of 'oping to find one myself.

Growing serious again, How long ago they leave? Sorry to say I 'aven't seen or 'eard anything that might fit, but I'll ask the others. Only joined 'em a bit ago, so they may have something. Wouldn't count on it though, this is rough country. For yourself, I'm Hammas. Tell ya what I did Grigori, tell me what ya can and I'll speak for ya. May not be a knight like the others, but they'll listen. Your boss sounds like a real bastard, and it's 'im we're after, not girls who did what they 'ad to. Tell me about the twelve in the fort, and the boss. Any way to sneak in and slit his throat?

With the others, You've the right of it wizard. We need to get 'er out of 'er 'ole quick as can. As for them, gesturing to the prisoners, take 'me with us. I'd like all of us to be there in case we need someone, so keep 'em tied and then tie 'em to a tree. Even if they get free, they won't be able to get far and they don't sound likely to risk their necks for the boss lady

Hammas concurs, Doesn't sound like the girls done anything, and the other two seem alright, second's the reason I stick south of the road. Never did like tax collectors. Yeah, Oleg's sounds good. Something that the first one said bothered me though, gonna ask it. The girl too.

Heading over to the first one, So, what's you're name? I'm Hammas. Trapper from over by Outsea way. Came 'ere to bag a troll, and now I'm with the knights after the Stag Lord's 'ead.

Said you're from a keep to the south. Would that be where this Stag Lord is? What can you tell me 'bout 'im? That thing about the dryad and wood. Now, I'm respectful of the spirits as the next hunter, but them jokes are old as time, even 'ave some truth to 'em. Why'd he get so bent over it? Sounds like a right bastard.

To the girl, You said 'us'. How many others are there and where are they? Also, either of these two touch ya?

Perhaps our priest can assist? I hear confession is good for the soul.

Hammas' eyes are a bit bright as she lays Garm on the fallen tent. Right, Thanks. Can't do it myself.

Hammas is surprised at mention of the ring. She never mentioned anything 'bout it to me! To the bandits, Oi! Whose idea was it to take 'er ring?

Seems we've got a problem. She's down there, along with Hag knows what else. Once we settle things 'ere. I say we poke around the hole a bit, see if we can burn 'em out. Yay, nay?
