My apologies for my silence. I feel as if though I’ve never found my voice for Gaelden. I’m finding it hard to write, she isn’t very useful thus far, and isn’t really needed in combat either. I have meant to make posts but it just…yeah. I truly am sorry to everyone.

Gaelden Wounds (0) HP (92) Saves (15/14/16, +2 vs enchantment) AC (26/21/23) CMD (34) Init (+3) Smite (2/2) LoH 2d6 (7/7) Investiture (5/6) Ki (9/9) Mage Armor (0/1) Spear (5/5)

Wiping her hands clean, Gaelden nodded. ”Many a warrior has died that way. It isn’t worth the risk. We should proceed with caution.”

Round 1 cast divine favor and join the line. Round 2…

Hit: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (16) + 19 = 35
Damage: 1d10 + 18 ⇒ (8) + 18 = 26

Flurry of Blows: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (16) + 18 = 34
Damage: 1d10 + 15 ⇒ (3) + 15 = 18

Iterative: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (7) + 13 = 20
Damage: 1d10 + 15 ⇒ (7) + 15 = 22

The orcs had reached the end of the hallway, and thus the end of the line. Gaelden’s fists were waiting for them, and she brought as much brute strength to the fight as did their axes. Perhaps more. Infused with divine favor, each punch impacted with the force of a hammer.

Gaelden Wounds (0) HP (92) Saves (15/14/16, +2 vs enchantment) AC (26/21/23) CMD (34) Init (+3) Smite (2/2) LoH 2d6 (7/7) Investiture (5/6) Ki (9/9) Mage Armor (0/1) Spear (5/5)

Gaelden held her ground. "Stay in the light." She said, looking around warily. "These effects rarely last long. There is no reason to fight whomever did this in the terrain they prefer."

Gaelden Wounds (0) HP (92) Saves (15/14/16, +2 vs enchantment) AC (26/21/23) CMD (34) Init (+3) Smite (2/2) LoH 2d6 (7/7) Investiture (5/6) Ki (9/9) Mage Armor (0/1) Spear (5/5)

Gaelden nodded. She was ready.

The Paladin took the news in with some concern. The snoring could indeed be due to someone ensorcelled. It could also be from a beast that lacked predators, which was concerning. Either way, they had to tread cautiously.

Gaelden Wounds (0) HP (92) Saves (15/14/16, +2 vs enchantment) AC (26/21/23) CMD (34) Init (+3) Smite (2/2) LoH 2d6 (7/7) Investiture (5/6) Ki (9/9) Mage Armor (0/1) Spear (5/5)

”It has chosen you. It is cursed. Or your finger is just too fat.” She said, deadpan. ”So long as there are no harmful effects and you wish to wear it, then I’d rather leave it as it is instead of lopping off body parts.”

Gaelden Wounds (0) HP (92) Saves (15/14/16, +2 vs enchantment) AC (26/21/23) CMD (34) Init (+3) Smite (2/2) LoH 2d6 (7/7) Investiture (5/6) Ki (9/9) Mage Armor (0/1) Spear (5/5)

”Many wizards believe that with their spells they can handle any eventuality. This one proved that notion wrong.” She mused, chalking it up to more evidence as towards the lethality of where they were.

Gaelden Wounds (0) HP (92) Saves (15/14/16, +2 vs enchantment) AC (26/21/23) CMD (34) Init (+3) Smite (2/2) LoH 2d6 (7/7) Investiture (5/6) Ki (9/9) Mage Armor (0/1) Spear (5/5)

”It would do me no good.” The Paladin said, glad that she was not the only dealing with the traps.

Gaelden Wounds (0) HP (92) Saves (15/14/16, +2 vs enchantment) AC (26/21/23) CMD (34) Init (+3) Smite (2/2) LoH 2d6 (7/7) Investiture (5/6) Ki (9/9) Mage Armor (0/1) Spear (5/5)

”And by inconvenient he means tragic.” Gaelden added. ”Especially as the rest of us would likely not be far behind when we inevitably fall into the first trap in our path.” The Paladin said.

Gaelden Wounds (0) HP (92) Saves (15/14/16, +2 vs enchantment) AC (26/21/23) CMD (34) Init (+3) Smite (2/2) LoH 2d6 (7/7) Investiture (5/6) Ki (9/9) Mage Armor (0/1) Spear (5/5)

Unable to do as such, Gaelden quietly whispered a prayer for the dead. While she doubted it would help, as all souls were judged, it felt right to at least show a modicum of respect.

Gaelden Wounds (0) HP (92) Saves (15/14/16, +2 vs enchantment) AC (26/21/23) CMD (34) Init (+3) Smite (2/2) LoH 2d6 (7/7) Investiture (5/6) Ki (9/9) Mage Armor (0/1) Spear (5/5)

”At the end of the day, it is better to be the ones looting a corpse than to be the corpse that is looted.” Gaelden rationalized. ”That, and scrounging for loot tends to pay more than most honest jobs.” She added with a wry smile.

Gaelden Wounds (0) HP (92) Saves (15/14/16, +2 vs enchantment) AC (26/21/23) CMD (34) Init (+3) Smite (2/2) LoH 2d6 (7/7) Investiture (5/6) Ki (9/9) Mage Armor (0/1) Spear (5/5)

Gaelden shifted from foot to foot uncomfortably. Dealing with traps was nowhere near her abilities, so she had to trust the expert. She just hoped that the halfling would be alright...

Gaelden Wounds (0) HP (92) Saves (15/14/16, +2 vs enchantment) AC (26/21/23) CMD (34) Init (+3) Smite (2/2) LoH 2d6 (7/7) Investiture (5/6) Ki (9/9) Mage Armor (0/1) Spear (5/5)

Gaelden nodded in appreciation of Simon's analysis. She was glad that the halfling had joined them, for he showed both caution and a kind soul. While the former was required to survive in their line of work, the latter was important in her eyes when it came to a companion. Silently she moved forward, alongside Kolaiah.

"It would seem that the Gods have indeed blessed us." The paladin said. "It will be an honor to work together, I am sure. Shall we continue our introductions as we descend?" She offered.

Welcome!

Thinking it over, I'd vote against doing interviews. In RL time, it will take a long, long, long time. It also means that people who aren't chosen have time to RP and get attached to characters that they will end up not using, and that feels mean to me.

So I'd vote for just choosing someone. Pick a date that recruitment ends, and we can PM the GM our thoughts, with him picking whomever he feels fits best for the story he plans to tell with us.

Gaelden Wounds (0) HP (92) Saves (15/14/16, +2 vs enchantment) AC (26/21/23) CMD (34) Init (+3) Smite (2/2) LoH 2d6 (7/7) Investiture (5/6) Ki (9/9) Mage Armor (0/1) Spear (5/5)

"We find a new trapspotter." Gaelden said, as she watched their comrade leave. She did so with a sympathetic look. "This isn't our first adventure, and there are plenty of people we have worked with before..."

Gaelden Wounds (0) HP (92) Saves (15/14/16, +2 vs enchantment) AC (26/21/23) CMD (34) Init (+3) Smite (2/2) LoH 2d6 (7/7) Investiture (5/6) Ki (9/9) Mage Armor (0/1) Spear (5/5)

Eh…might not be fun for those not chosen.

I have no issue with a drow joining us, so long as it makes sense and steps are taken to explain why they are with us.

As for someone joining, I think that the easiest way to do this is to say that we sent word for someone we already know and have worked with to meet up with us. That way the new character joins us just as we are heading down into the depths and we don't lose any more time.

Gaelden Wounds (0) HP (92) Saves (15/14/16, +2 vs enchantment) AC (26/21/23) CMD (34) Init (+3) Smite (2/2) LoH 2d6 (7/7) Investiture (5/6) Ki (9/9) Mage Armor (0/1) Spear (5/5)

"I agree that we remain wary. But this is not our first adventure, we've survived worse than this." She said, in a way which she hoped was reassuring.

I can move. I like the hand drawn map. As for Ceirn, I think it would be fair to say he remembered to bring said light source. At this level, that doesn't seem like something someone would forget. But if so, Gaelden will walk alongside him to keep him safe.

all good gaelden. we are just discussing background stuff to streamline dice rolls and skill checks

im just going to type this out without putting it into OOC. itd be a lot of formatting i dont want to deal with.

the way i see it, the balanced coin is a group of experienced adventurers, so it would make sense that you guys quickly come up with a way to adventure/travel in the Realm's most well known (perhaps the most dangerous?) dungeon.

what i need

a marching order for a 5foot wide path
a marching order for a 10foot wide path
is someone going to scout ahead? if so, who? how far?
is someone going to lag behind to guard the rear? if so, who?
what is the light source for the group? who is holding it?

i think these skills would cover the basics for the party.

perception

if you have a trap detection bonus, make a separate take ten perception with that bonus
disable device
Stealth
survival

if you have a skill that you think would work for you in the dungeon, feel free to include it

* Perception (+18)

No trap detection, stealth or survival. No light source. She would want to take point in the marching order.

Gaelden, having stayed quiet up as she was still deep in meditation, walked alongside Ceirn.

Sorry, I'm here. I must have hit the 'x' on the campaign, but I see that this is active.

Seeing the men fighting (and losing) the battle to hold onto the rope, Gaelden hurried over and took the place of the man who seemed to need the break the most. Given her size it wasn’t hard to convince him to step aside.

Gaelden Wounds (0) HP (92) Saves (15/14/16, +2 vs enchantment) AC (26/21/23) CMD (34) Init (+3) Smite (2/2) LoH 2d6 (7/7) Investiture (5/6) Ki (9/9) Mage Armor (0/1) Spear (5/5)

Frowning, Gaeldren waited to see what Jambreth saw. There was no need to panic, nor to act blindly. First they have to understand the situation, then they could act accordingly.

Gaelden Wounds (0) HP (92) Saves (15/14/16, +2 vs enchantment) AC (26/21/23) CMD (34) Init (+3) Smite (2/2) LoH 2d6 (7/7) Investiture (5/6) Ki (9/9) Mage Armor (0/1) Spear (5/5)

Taking a deep breath, Gaeldren followed along. The theatrics raised some concerns, but there was nothing that could be done about it now. That is, except for watching each others' backs.

Gaelden Wounds (0) HP (92) Saves (15/14/16, +2 vs enchantment) AC (26/21/23) CMD (34) Init (+3) Smite (2/2) LoH 2d6 (7/7) Investiture (5/6) Ki (9/9) Mage Armor (0/1) Spear (5/5)

I’m here, ready to enter Undermountain

Gaelden Wounds (0) HP (92) Saves (15/14/16, +2 vs enchantment) AC (26/21/23) CMD (34) Init (+3) Smite (2/2) LoH 2d6 (7/7) Investiture (5/6) Ki (9/9) Mage Armor (0/1) Spear (5/5)

Gaelden sighed as she stood behind the group. Getting into Undermountain was proving to be more difficult, and dirtier, than she had imagined. ”Please don’t kill anyone needlessly.” She called out to the Godling, saying it to herself as much as she said it to him. To be assaulted as such was trying her patience.

Gaelden Wounds (0) HP (92) Saves (15/14/16, +2 vs enchantment) AC (26/21/23) CMD (34) Init (+3) Smite (2/2) LoH 2d6 (7/7) Investiture (5/6) Ki (9/9) Mage Armor (0/1) Spear (5/5)

Rising to her feet, Gaelden said ”You heard her.” She knew when it was pointless to argue and this was one such situation.

Perception as well?: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (17) + 18 = 35

”Maybe.” Gaelden said with some thought. ”Given his father, perhaps not?” She was serious in her question. ”What is death to a God? I believe Bhaal died and came back numerous times. I would not be surprised to find that their children operate under their own set of rules as well.”

Gaelden Wounds (0) HP (92) Saves (15/14/16, +2 vs enchantment) AC (26/21/23) CMD (34) Init (+3) Smite (2/2) LoH 2d6 (7/7) Investiture (5/6) Ki (9/9) Mage Armor (0/1) Spear (5/5)

”Well, it beats just sitting here and listening to the wind.” Gaelden replied. ”I believe that we’ve got some contacts from previous jobs. It shouldn’t be too hard to find a way in.”

Gaelden Wounds (0) HP (92) Saves (15/14/16, +2 vs enchantment) AC (26/21/23) CMD (34) Init (+3) Smite (2/2) LoH 2d6 (7/7) Investiture (5/6) Ki (9/9) Mage Armor (0/1) Spear (5/5)

Ignoring the gallows talk, Gaelden shrugged. ”It is somewhat early to count our gold, is it not?” She responded. Then, with a smile she added ”All that I carry belongs to Tyr. Whatever my shares, it will be used in his name. For the crusade is eternal.” Shaking her head, she added ”So as always, I must give you the same boring answer.”

Sitting with Ceirn and Astrillith, Gaelden watched the godling perform. Despite his crass personality and unwelcome advances, she had to concede that the dwarf was quite proficient at...well, anything that came to performing. Regardless of his motivations, he brought cheer when the howling wind outside battled against his efforts. For what it was worth, she appreciated his efforts.

"Whether they are lying or not, this weather is an ill omen." She said. "A dragon or an eye tyrant? They can be fought with one's hands. But the weather?" She shook her head. "Just as many innocents can perish. And I dislike the feeling of helplessness that comes from a natural calamity."

Seeing as how everyone is putting in character descriptions....

Gaelden's appearance

This should give an idea of what she looks like. Image is taken from the custodes from 'The Tithes.' Could also imagine her being similar to Brienne of Tarth, only...strength 20. So larger. While Kolaiah will tower over Gaelden, when paired with most humans she will be noticeably larger. She looks like the kind of person who could do serious damage with her bare hands.

Gaelden Wounds (0) HP (92) Saves (15/14/16, +2 vs enchantment) AC (26/21/23) CMD (34) Init (+3) Smite (2/2) LoH 2d6 (7/7) Investiture (5/6) Ki (9/9) Mage Armor (0/1) Spear (5/5)

Because it might help...a breakdown of what this character can do.

Mechanics:

In the post above I broke down Gaelden's melee offense. What I can add to it is that she can smite 2x times per day and can spend 2x ki points for smite. Smite can be used against evil and against chaos. So technically, that is up to 6 smites per day if ki isn't otherwise used. Otherwise, Ki is as normal for a monk. Usually, an extra attack.

For ranged, 5 times a day she can throw a spear. +11 to hit, 1d6+3 damage, 2 bleed. It's not much, but it's an option.

When it comes to abilities with limited use, she has smite, ki, lay on hands, and investiture (divine favor), her ranged spear attack, and for 8 hours a day mage armor.

That's about it. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Gaelden Wounds (0) HP (92) Saves (15/14/16, +2 vs enchantment) AC (26/21/23) CMD (34) Init (+3) Smite (2/2) LoH 2d6 (7/7) Investiture (5/6) Ki (9/9) Mage Armor (0/1) Spear (5/5)

Sure! Do you mean Gaelden's rolls?

* To Hit: +8 (BaB) + 5 (Str) + 2 (Enchantment) +1/+0 (Guidance from familiar) = +16/+15/+10
* Damage: 1d10 (Base) + 10/7 (Str) + 2 (Enchantment) + 1 (LG) + 1 (Trait) + 1 (Race) = 1d10+15 / 1d10+12
* Divine Favor: +3 Hit +3 Damage (Invested Regent archetype)
* Smite: +5 Hit (cha) +4 dmg (lvl)

Or just in general? Rnd 1 Gaelden cast divine favor. The worm attacked her and hit. This caused a free grapple that succeeded. It had the swallow whole rule.

Round 2 she takes damage from being swallowed. She was 'grappled' so could still fight. Options were to fight (grappled), climb to its mouth (CMD), or cut her way out. Thanks to Astrillith, her damage was enough to kill it.

Anyways...I chose the monster because it was CR8 and looked like an interesting way to tell a story and roll some dice.

”Oh!” Startled she spun around, only to blush as the dwarf’s advances took her by surprise. ”Ah, no. I am sworn to Tyr-I…uhm, let’s start over.” She stammered as she went about healing her wounds and wiping vigor off of herself. Composing herself she said ”I am Gaelden, a monk and Paladin of Lord Tyr. And this is Astrillith, a mage of some talent. We have come to make you an offer to join our band, the Balanced Coin.” She glanced over at her tiefling comrade. Feeling like she was on the back foot she hoped that the magus had something to add.

The Worm dies

The worm reeled in pain as the elf came in, taking it by surprise. Recoiling from elf's touch, which both froze the beast's body and sapped its very soul, it was put into a fight or flight response. A response which did not last long...from within it's stomach, Gaelden continued to lash out, punching and kicking as hard as she could, even as she was being digested. Attacked from both without and within, the worm fell backwards, landing with a crash that shook the ground.

Just as the worm came down, so too did one of the ruined dwelling's rooves burst open to reveal a strange sight. It was difficult to tell from the nearby fire, but the dwarf's hair and beard looked as if ablaze. Oddly enough, this dwarf's mithril armor looked free of soot and grime.

The dwarf quickly looked down at his feet in surprise. The dwarf warrior bent down and picked up something small and held it in his fingers.
"Ooo! A gold coin! Don't think it's one of mine. Excellent!" the godling chuckled.

The worm came down, landing atop the building that the dwarf had just exited from. The structure was flattened, with splinters of wood and debris filling the air.

Gaelden crawled out of the worm's maw, dripping from head to toe in digestive stomach acid. She was fortunate that the robes of her order were enchanted well enough to stand up to such damage, even if her exposed skin had not been so fortunate. She touched a hand to herself, channeling positive energy to heal the worst of her wounds.

"Astrillith!" She exclaimed, seeing her comrade. "I could feel the fire within the creature cool as it was struck. I would have died if not for your timely aid. You have my thanks." Standing up, she added. "Have you seen the Godling? We came here to recruit him...and the only good news that I can report was that I saw no sign of him from within that beast."

At the moment, she was oblivious to Vondal who was standing behind her.

A very nice tale from Kolaiah. It does well to show her personality and to set up our adventure. The only thing I’d add is that Gaelden is a she as changelings must be female. But with the high strength and gender neutral clothing it is fair for a Minotaur to find the gender to be ambiguous. ;)

Giant Fire Worm Round 2:

Recap

While searching for Vondal, a gigantic worm of fire and magma destroyed a hamlet and swallowed Gaelden. Her comrade Astrillith leapt to her defense, even as the aforementioned Dwarven Godling came out of the ruins.

Round 2

Ashes floated across the sky as the hamlet burned. Gaelden had arrived too late to save anyone, for she did not even know that there was anyone who needed saving. All she knew was that an actual Godling was supposed to be in the area. It was a dwarf, or so they said. A dwarf of such radiance that just looking at his beard alone would cause grown adults to weep in religious fervor. Or at least, that is what they said. But thus far she had not found the dwarf with divine blood. All she had found was fire, ash and the charred remains of the simple folk who eked out a living in these woods. That…and a gigantic worm composed of swirling fire, churning magma, and cinders. She had no idea who, or what, had summoned it. She assumed that it had been sent after the godling, as there was no point having such a monster loose on a handful of commoners. She knew then that she could not run. The dead had to be avenged, and she still had to find the godling…

Worm Initiative: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (12) - 1 = 11
Gaelden Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23

”Tyr!” She cried out, raising her hands to the sky. ”In your name!” She could feel the power of the divine flow through her. Divine Favor

Worm Bite: 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (12) + 24 = 36
Grapple: 1d20 + 35 ⇒ (12) + 35 = 47
Damage: 4d8 + 11 ⇒ (6, 4, 6, 8) + 11 = 35 Fire: 1d6 ⇒ 6
G: 41 damage

Caught off guard by the speed of the monster, the monk could do little as it lunged at her, its maw closing around not only her but the very ground as well. Caught in its maw she lashed out, even as she was swallowed…

Smite Evil
Hit: 1d20 + 19 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 19 + 5 = 40
Damage: 1d10 + 18 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 18 + 4 = 28

Flurry of Blows: 1d20 + 18 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 18 + 5 = 36
Damage: 1d10 + 15 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 15 + 4 = 26

Iterative: 1d20 + 13 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 13 + 5 = 28
Damage: 1d10 + 15 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 15 + 4 = 29

Total Damage: 28 + 26 + 29 = 83

Kicking, punching, tearing, the monk still found herself being sucked down the gullet of the monster….

Round 1 finished. Holding off to see if someone else would like to jump in to save her before she has to start cutting her way out

Tiefling Magus, Aasimar Monk/Paladin, Dwarven Aasimar Godling, Elven Rogue, Minotaur Skald, Human Soulknife…hmmm….a group name?

The Balanced Coin

“Old tales tell that luck plays a crucial role in each person's life. When each newborn baby enters into the realms, Tymora flips a coin formed from the remnants of the original goddess of luck, Tyche. Beshaba calls it in the air—the moon (heads) or the cloak (tails). If Beshaba is right, that person is cursed with misfortune for the rest of his or her days. If she's wrong, Lady Luck smiles on that child for the rest of his or her life. For some rare beings, the coin lands edge on—and these luckless few can forge their own fates, for they have more freedom over their destinies than the powers themselves.”

The name implies honesty as a mercenary company, its vaguely religious, and it says that we make our own luck.

And I’m alright with Vondal being Vondal. But Gaelden has taken a vow of chastity. So any chances of reciprocating are below 0.
