The Professor nods magnanimously at Hellebore. "Of course. Perhaps after this mission." She's about to make an arch comment about being stealthy, but she knows that's not her particular strength. She's already pushed her luck once, and it wouldn't do to brag and be caught wanting, now would it?

Piotr attempts to row the boat as silently as possible as they approach the barge and tries to keep his body as still as possible so that his armor doesn't jingle. As they get close, Piotr channels the power of his ancestral lycanthropes, to keep as quiet as a wolf stalking its prey.

That’s three passes and that’s all you need! I’ll post what you find as you arrive at the barge a little later…

You are able to get close to the barge without being noticed…as you get even closer you see Guaril facing off on the deck with three fellas that are obviously assassins, and one flying gal whose obviously a caster…

With their focus solely on Guaril Karela, you are able to pull up alongside the barge while they exchange insults with him..,

With a gutteral snarl, Piotr takes a single step towards the assassin with the yellow sash. He arms himself with his polearm (bec de corbin).

Lazily, Professor Masaendri casts Magic Missile at the flying spellcaster.

When the aerial combatant turns to see who had the audacity to hit them, she gives them an arch look with one raised eyebrow.

Lanel casts mage armor on himself and tries to stay out of the Frontline for the moment.

Hellebore smiles in a not-so-nice way as she glares at the purple assassin, widening her eyes to catch the reflection from the setting sun. Gesturing gracefully, she targets euphoric cloud on the caster, politely waiting until the professor targets them first.

DC 18 Fort save negates fascinated. Centered on the caster, so probably won't get any of the assassins, though that depends how high up she is.

As Gnagnatsu vanishes and Lanel buffs, Grazyra follows Piotr towards the assassins, drawing her sword as she does so, and gets in a defensive stance…

The Professor’s magical bolts pierce the torso of her target, eliciting a short hiss…

Hellebore sends a toxic cloud the caster’s way; while she resists the fascination effect, the fog forces her to move away, which she does to escape the cloud…

…and flies near her allies, hovering 5’ above deck…she casts a spell and she and the assassins disappear!

The Professor notices the gleam in the flying spellcaster's eye as they fly down to their allies. Even as they cast their spell, she's already moving, dashing closer to cast her spell. Just as they disappear, fire erupts from her outstretched hand.

Casting Burning Hands. DC 15 Reflex saving throw for half damage.

Fire damage: 3d4 ⇒ (2, 2, 4) = 8
If they are in its area of effect and fail their saves, presumably their burning clothing will give away their position until it's put out.

The sneaky Professor lights up her targets…

Lanel starts making his way to Guaril, and shoots at the caster with his crossbow.

Lanel’s crossbow bolt proves accurate hitting squarely on the caster’s shoulder…but to Lanel’s dismay, it does no damage whatsoever!

She has DR; while you don’t know exactly what, you did see that Grazyra’s adamantine broad sword did full damage…

Guaril Karela smiles at your arrival, saying, ”What took you so long, my friends?” as he moves quickly to strike at purple…

How did Piotr take 17 hp of damage? I only see a die roll of 6 damage.

"AWWOOOCH!” the beast howls in pain. He mutters a quick prayer to Milani and a shield of force swiftly appears, hovering in front of him. (Swift action to cast shield of faith on self.)
He takes a step back, snarls menacingly at the assassin, and thrusts his polearm into the assassin's chest.

Piotr now has a +3 deflection bonus to AC, giving him 21 AC.

Piotr, each assassin fights with two kukris; the first two attacks were by white on Grazyra, the last two (one for 11 damage, one for 6) by yellow on you. I separated the attacks on you as yellow was invisible and you felt his first blade before you saw him. Sorry I didn’t make that clear…

Piotr retaliates against yellow, giving more than he received, as his polearm sticks deeply onto the assassin’s chest…

Adrenaline courses through Professor Masaendri's veins. Combat never ceases to thrill her with its threat of imminent danger and possible death. Her eyes give away her eagerness, despite the fact that she's choosing a rather practical, unimpressive tactic right now. Retreating to put some space between her and the foes, she draws her crossbow. She pulls out a bolt and gives it a taunting lick while staring menacingly at the flying spellcaster before loading it into her weapon.

After the Professor’s wicked taunt, Grazyra steps 5’ east before swinging her sword at white…

Stepping to the right of the assassin, Piotr drops his polearm at his feet. With one swift stroke as he draws his exotic sword, he brings the deadly blade across the assassin's chest.

Hellebore steps away from the Yellow assassin, her eyes still fixed on the caster. A slight smile graces her lips as she whispers, "Sleep.". Slumber hex, Will DC 18 (-2 for evil eye) Dismissing them from her mind, she readies her mostly decorative longspear, aiming at Yellow's back.

Belladonna wriggles around, aiming her butt at Yellow, in case Piotr needs some help. He sniffs deeply, looking for anyone else close by. Scent within 15 ft.

As Gnagnatsu preps a weapon, Piotr narrowly misses yellow…

Hellebore puts a hex on the caster…

Hellebore cheers as the spellcaster falls asleep, abruptly cut off as she wakes when she crashes to the ground, then cheers again as Grazyra and Guaril combine to take her down for good.

Rolling her eyes at Hellebore's ridiculous cheering--(What did she expect would happen when the flyer fell?)--Professor Masaendri saunters over to Guaril and casually aims a shot from her crossbow at the remaining assassin.

She nods to Guaril: "You seem to be in one piece. I suppose you could've handled most of them yourself, though the flying one may have been a pest."

Piotr withdraws his wand of cure light wounds and taps himself a few times.

After a couple minutes the shield of force hovering in front of him disappears.

Hellebore sneers at the Professor's back as she dusts off her hands. She moves forward, offering her hand. "Glad to meet you, Guaril. I hope we didn't interrupt anything important."

As Piotr’s heals up, Guaril Karela cleans, then sheathes his daggers, smooths over his mustache as he walks over to the party, bowing to Hellebore…

“Not at all, m’Lady! Every investment is a gamble, and it seems this paid off— barely. I assume that sly fox Aaqir told you about the plan, yes? Let your enemies see you in a moment of weakness, allow them to strike and taste blood, then lure them toward a trap while they think they’re winning. I, ah,” he motions noncommittally toward some of the blood staining the deck, “think I may have let them taste too much blood tonight. You can imagine how thrilled Uncle Guaril is that a few of his heavily armed friends happened to be in the neighborhood in his time of need,” he remarks while flashing a knowing smile.

”Speaking of deals and mutual backscratching, you should know that Aaqir and I have nearly finished one to help us perform the other. I got a little too ambitious in Varisia and made a few enemies we didn’t intend to unleash, and that’s made staying in business as we are… less than wise. Fortunately, Aaqir’s looking for talent like ours, and I’m not really in a position to say no.

“That’s not to say I’m breaking up the family business—hardly the case. This is just a mutually beneficial marriage of two honest enterprises in which everyone gets a juicy cut—so long as we play nice with our proverbial in-laws. Be prepared to be even more upstanding than usual, but be ready to do things the old fashioned way. This is the start of something big.”

Professor Masaendri's ear twitches. Is someone thinking ill of me? Hmph. A fool, no doubt.

As Guaril waxes eloquent about his circumstances, one eyebrow makes for her hairline. What a windbag! She is thoroughly unimpressed. "I see. And might I ask the nature of your 'deals and mutual backscratching'?" Ugh! I feel less intelligent simply by saying that!

Piotr's eyes go wide as the assassin suddenly drops dead.

"Nicely done. Thanks, Lanel."

Lanel scratches the back of his head sheepishly. "Wish I could help out with that more, but these guys looked tough. And stabby. A bit more dangerous than what I'm used too. Glad I could help!"

Lanel raises an eyebrow a bit unconvinced when Guaril explains his motives and plans. "I'm not in any position to offer suggestions, but that marriage feels a step away from an ugly case of domestic violence..."

"I'm sure if the boss wanted us to know what the deals were, he would have told us already," Gnagnatsu says with a wink at the person who is sort of her faction leader.

"Well, I'm glad we were in time to save you from some extra bloodletting. Is there anything else we can help you with today?"

Guaril bows. ”Aye m’Lady, you may ask…and you have,” he smirks, not directly answering her query…

Guaril smiles in recognition. ”You’ve been around me long enough to know that, Gnaggy; thanks for bringing your friends to get me outta this pickle…”

"Well, I'm glad we were in time to save you from some extra bloodletting. Is there anything else we can help you with today?"

Guaril shakes his head. ”No ma’am, you’ve done me a great service; I owe you all a debt. For now, I’ll get you back to shore, it’s getting late…”

After reaching shore, you head to your rooms in the Grand Lodge; it’s the wee hours of the next morning but you can sleep in a bit before you need to be at the Commission at noon.

You have a little time in which to enjoy the grand opening of the Opparan Trade Commission, a reception that involves lavish finger food, expensive drinks, and exposure to many of Foreign Quarter’s and Absalom’s leading citizens, including some very important people. There are several other people present, some hailing from Taldor, including the following personalities you are introduced to (detailed in the spoilers below):

You have an opportunity to interact with one or more NPCs, those listed would be prime targets, but the general audience can be targeted as well. After such interactions, so long you made some effort to portray Lord Minovitas as unsympathetic or otherwise undermine his reputation, you can attempt a DC 15 Bluff, Diplomacy, or Perform (comedy or oratory) check to sway that NPC’s opinion against the host. No matter how long you spend chatting, each PC receives only one opportunity to attempt such a check. The number of your successes here, combined with your successes with altering the paintings, will determine the audience’s reaction to Lord Minovatas. I’m counting Gnagnatsu’s premature Bluff check from earlier a success, spreading word to a group within the general audience, so she doesn’t need to make a check but can RP as she wishes…

Since it's been a minute, here is a post compiling what we've learned of Minovitas.

"How do you do? I am Professor Masaendri." The Professor introduces herself to Lady Vaelia of House Wintermark. After making small talk for a bit, she drops the first nugget of truth about the "illustrious" Lord Minovitas. "Ah, Lord Minovitas. He has spent much of the past year in Absalom presumably laying the groundwork for future business endeavors, though most of that time he has spent utterly intoxicated. What a pity that he cannot show restraint while wining and dining influential citizens. One must question the quality of his character."

The noble Lady Vaelia arches an illustrious eyebrow at the news relayed by the Professor. ”You don’t say? Most shocking! And he hails from Taldor, nonetheless, he doth shame us all!”

Piotr dabs at his forehead, feigning sympathy for the senator’s discomfort in the midday heat. He leans in slightly, lowering his voice just enough to suggest he’s sharing a privileged bit of information while reiterating The Professor's statement.

"Senator, I imagine a man of your financial acumen must find it frustrating to watch wealth mismanaged. Lord Minovitas, for instance, has been in Absalom for the better part of a year, but instead of securing sound investments, he’s squandered his time—and his fortune—on indulgence. Lavish feasts, endless casks of wine… all while his estates in Taldor fall into ruin. You and I both know that a noble who can’t manage his own coffers is hardly a man worth doing business with."

Piotr lets the words linger before continuing in a more somber tone.

"And that’s just the financial side of things. There are whispers—unpleasant ones—about how he funds this excess. His people back home? Bled dry, worked beyond reason. The moment they protest, they simply… disappear. Two such voices have already gone silent this past month. One might overlook such matters for a man of solid standing, but Minovitas? He’s barely keeping his reputation afloat as it is. If he collapses, do you really want to be standing anywhere near him when he does?"

Piotr leans back slightly, offering the senator a knowing look.

"Of course, you have far better judgment than most, Senator. But I’d wager a man of your stature prefers investments that grow, not ones that rot from the inside."

Lanel mingles with a confident charming smile having tge time to prepare. With a glass of wine in hand he talks about the terrible management from the noble.

"Well, I'm not sure I would even want to be seen around him. I heard his servants were complaining about missing payments. If he can't even get that handled properly, what could you expect with a responsibility like this? No, no, I'm afraid there's even worse being hidden, but you won't hear it from me. People who have their reputation like that in the line tend to react poorly."

Lord Minovitas takes to the stage as three trumpeters play a fanfare to call attention to him. He then delivers a prepared speech that precedes his unveiling of the paintings.

“Welcome esteemed colleagues and honored guests. On this historic day, the glorious Opparan Trade Commission is open for business! But it is not just commerce that we commemorate today; we also recognize the valor of several of the greatest heroes of our time who have fought in Mendev’s recent crusade and pushed back the demon threat so that others might live in peace. Yet this was not accomplished alone, and in an alliance of nations we found our strength. With the establishment of this facility here in Absalom, the Commission hopes to continue this alliance and further promote fair and equitable trade to the benefit of all.

“With great honor, I dedicate this embassy to its founding members, whose esteemed accomplishments shall be forever commemorated by the work of the world-renowned painter Amya Illanaf!”

The crowd heckles him during his speech, causing him to stutter throughout it. Nonetheless, Lord Minovitas gestures dramatically as if expecting someone to unveil the paintings for him. When that fails, he strides over to the first painting and theatrically whips off its cover while smiling to the audience. The crowd jeers maliciously; confused until he notices the painting has been altered; furious, he unveils the other paintings. The jeering only get louder and even more venomous as each one is revelealed…

Lord Minovitas panics and ineffectively tries to calm the crowd before retreating from the stage, thoroughly embarrassed,as the boos rain down upon him….
