"Town is quite a long hike just to figure out what we are doing my friend. Perhaps we should see what is making that growling sound? Maybe something in here will actually not try to kill us immediately, but I'm not very hopeful."
| Marguerite Ruysch |
Marguerite produces a ball of light, about 20 feet away, and each round moves it about 60 feet into the dark.
GM Glyn
|
Drake points out that the town is a long hike. Galesong nods in agreement ” Exactly! Maybe we could go to a town further away?” The bard sighs ” It was a thought. Let's see if it's something that won't try to kill us. Bet you a coin it will try to kill us.”
Tik suggests that since it knows we are here, let's try talking to it.
Marguerite produces a ball of light and slowly advances it into the dark tunnel. While the only light in the dungeon is what your group is providing, the tunnel is so thick with smoke that it is hard to make out anything beyond 10 feet ahead. (Tunnel: Smoke -2 circumstance to visual Perception. Objects are concealed beyond 10ft. Anyone breathing the smoke becomes sickened 1 until you get fresh air.)
Galesong goes up to the tunnel entrance, coughing from the smoke [b]” Hello! Is there anyone friendly living there in the suffocating, smoke-filled tunnel?” After a few heartbeats, you hear a spine-tingling howl echo from deep within the tunnels.
Galesong backs away from the tunnel, turning to the group ” I know a great little tavern about three towns' distance from here!”
(Any special exploration activities or precautions used to advance into the smoke-filled tunnel? Anyone holding their breath?)

The ratfolk contemplates the smoky tunnel, whiskers twitching. "I wonder if the smoke is coming from that forge we saw here before. Remember? There was magic that kept the smoke from building up around the forge...maybe if we disable the magic this smoke will clear."

|
"That would be a hope." Any check on the spine-chilling howl?
Djala fishes a cloth out of her pack and wraps it around her nose and mouth. Holding her breath, she'll step into the smoke when the rest of the group is ready to go.
| Drake Stormrider |
"Everyone hold on one minute and give me a little bit of space. I'm going to try something to see if I can clear out some of the smoke." Drake steps a few feet into the tunnel, making sure he is at least 5 feet away from everyone. He holds his breath and takes a few seconds to cast Gale Blast, trying to see if the wind that emanates from the spell will blow away the smoke around him. As soon as the spell is cast he moves back out with his companions to see if it worked at all.
GM Glyn

Tik suggests a connection between the smoky tunnel and the forge found near the dungeon entrance.
Djala has heard that same howl before from some past event. She is sure it is a hellhound! She wraps a cloth around her nose and mouth to help with the smoke. (+2 to saves vs smoke.)
Galesong looks surprised ”A hellhound! I wouldn't want to meet one of those in a dark smoke-filled alley. Where did you get a mask, are you a bandent?” The halfling begins deep breathing before holding his breath.
Drake asks everyone to stand back as he tries a science experiment with magic. The Gale Blast issuing from his hand does blow the smoke back, clearing the air for 5ft around him, but it’s only tempairy as more smoke fills in (clears the air for 5ft around Drake for 1 round. Can repeatedly cast cantrip as exploration actively.)
(Excellent thinking, Tik for remembering the burning pit, Djala for face cloth, and Drake use of Gale blast. Hero points for Djala & Drake. Tik is at max.)

Djala frowns as she sees the blast of air, followed by the smoke's return. "That does not look like a safe area to stand, but it is possible we could make use of it as we continue into the smoke. Good thinking, friend Drake!"

Squall watches Drake’s experiment and follows Djala’s example using a mask and holding his breath. The tengu with blades in hand is ready to push forward into the smoke-filled tunnel.
Djala notes that it’s not safe to stand within Drake’s blast area and gives him a friendly shoulder punch.
Drake takes it like a human.
With preparations taken the group takes a deep breath and moves forward into the smoke-filled tunnel weapons ready. It doesn't take long for the group to locate a Hellhound, as they see it form from the smoke as they close within 10ft of it. Unfortunately due to the difficulty of seeing in the smoke only Squall reacts fast enough.

RS glaive: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24 for slashing, holy: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9 plus deadly, if relevant: 1d8 ⇒ 1
And if it's still up...
Squall growls in frustration at his missed throw. He steps out of the smoke, takes a moment to clear his lungs, then stabs at the hound.
◆ Step (I can't edit the slide on my phone. Please move Squall to the space between Djala and Galesong.)
◆ Try to remove sickened: Fort, sick. 1: 1d20 + 7 - 1 ⇒ (5) + 7 - 1 = 11
◆ Strike: +1 cold iron shortsword, CA: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 9 + 1 = 28; damage (P): 1d6 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 1 = 8

Djala's Retributive Strike hits the hellhound, cutting it deeply but not enough to kill it.
Marguerite heroically resists the hellhound's fire breath, taking only partial damage.
Drake is not as lucky as he fails to resist, taking the full blast of fire, dropping him to the ground. [ooc}(Dying 1)[/ooc]
Marguerite launches a sling bullet, hitting the hound hard. It yelps in pain. She follows up with a magical mental blast that the creature critically fails to resist, taking double damage is stunned and unconscious from the non-lethal mental damage.
Squall ends the hellhound's life with a quick stab from his shortsword.
The booming voice of dwarven cursing can be heard in the distance, but is still obscured by the smoke.
Galesong glances at the group’s condition ” Perhaps retreating might be the correct tactical option?”
Will save DC17 vs Daze: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Tik and Djala can still act this round, Anthem +1 to hit, damage, and vs fear; Remember, you can only see 10ft, beyond is concealed due to smoke.

"Good plan!" Tik takes a deep breath and holds it as he heads into the smoke, grabs the unconscious wizard by his collar, and starts to drag him out. Unless Djala (who's much stronger) does so first, in which case Tik will grab anything anyone dropped before retreating.

Tik agrees wholeheartedly with Galesong’s suggestion. He rushes into the smoke to grab Drake’s body and start dragging him out of the tunnel and room.
BOT: Djala[b]
Djala following Tik’s lead cautiously follows the Alchemist into the smoke grabbing Drake’s staff before retreating back into the lift room.
You can now hear the footfalls of the angry dwarf as he gets closer, but is still hidden in the smoke.
Galesong uses his last of his 1st rank spells to cast a sooth healing on Drake, [b]” Yes, as my old pappy use to say ‘A run away today keeps the undertaker away’” Drake heals 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11 and wakes up. The bard moves back into the previous room ready to close the door once everyone is through.
The group has a small window in which to retreat before an unseen dwarf gets to you. Everyone is currently conscious, Drake is prone, Djala has his staff. Squall’s non-magical shortsword and hatchet are in the smoke-filled tunnel.
Everyone can take action, Bard song has ended. Remember, you can only see 10ft, beyond is concealed due to smoke.

Drake stands up. "Thank you Galesong for the healing!" He takes a deep breath, hoping to clear the smoke from his lungs and then prepares his magical defenses.
◆Stand
◆Fortitude: 1d20 + 4 - 1 ⇒ (10) + 4 - 1 = 13

Marguerite follows the others out, keeping an eye out over her shoulder, in case something follows them out of the smoke.

Recovering from his brush with death, Drake stands up as he clears his lungs of smoke and prepares a defence.
Marguerite follows the others out of the smoke-filled tunnel. For a moment, she thought she saw a stout dwarf whose beard and hair were made of smoke and fire with pupilless eyes and leathery flesh staring into her soul as he fingered a length of black chain.
Tik asks about retrieving Squall's dropped weapons, hinting he has something to slow the dwarf.
BOT: Clearing his lungs of the smoke, Squall calls out to leave them that he has his magic one, and the others are spares.
Galesong slightly panicked calls out ” Weapons are replaceable, let's regroup, rest, and try again when we aren't out of healing.”
BOT: Coughing the smoke out, Djala stands by Dake and Tik, unwilling to leave allies ” Decide now, retreat until a better time, or stand and fight.”
Drake, Marguerite, and Tik can decide to hold, attack, or leave. Squall and Djala being botted until next week. The Unseen Dwarf is waiting not far in the smoke-filled tunnel. You can hold, attack, or leave.

Lifting up the hem of her skirt (to keep it from getting dirty), Marguerite exits the smoke to join the others.

Tik and Marguerite retreat along with the rest of the group. For whatever reason the dwarf does not pursue the fleeing heroes.
Following your previous path the group ends up back in the abbot's quarters you camped in the previous night. You feel relatively safe here while taking time for Djala to heal everyone via lay on hands power over the next hour.
Galesong plays some calming tunes as the healing is taking place ” You know what doesn't kill you makes you stronger!”
( Everyone levels up to 3rd. For completing 90% of the level.)

Djala coughs in reaction to the caustic smoke. "That was unpleasant. *coughcough* Shall we return?"
| "Squall" Blacktail |
"I hope that dwarf doesn't have any more burning dogs, those were not fun to fight," Squall says with a disgusted shake of his feathered head. "But I don't want to leave him lurking behind us when we finally go down that elevator."

Djala ponders Rik's suggestion, then nods in agreement. "I would prefer not to enter such an unpleasant area without some sort of assistance. Let us investigate the furnace to see if there is aught we can make of it now that we have some more experience with the area."
