Braith Ablewillow
Ugh lol okay we all have armor!
Stupid disadvantage on Stealth: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21
Oh daymn, the original 15 is the low roll, noice!
DM Paguroid
3/5 is enough for a passing grade!
You make your way up the companionway (basically a cross between a ladder and a staircase) -- despite his knowledge of ships, Toki is too eager and trips on his way up the stairs, banging his shin on the top step. Luckily, Gideon is there to quickly jam a hand over Toki's mouth before he shouts out in pain and annoyance.
You find yourselves in a storeroom: This area holds general equipment for the operation of the ship such as tarps, extra sails, rope, etc.
You know from your way down to the brig that your gear is in the forward hold, but the door is locked. Aftward, you see doors to what are likely private cabins, crew quarters, and the sounds and smells of the galley.
Gideon Dawnbringer
|
"I'll give it a shot".
Gideon will look around for something to use to pick the lock, as his tools are probably with the rest of his belongings. Feel free to apply any penalty.
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23 Improvised Thieves Tools.
DM Paguroid
Gideon is able to fairly quickly locate a sail repair kit with some (kind of huge) needles. my god, man -- +8 Investigation!
Gideon sighs something about the best that fate is going to provide while he gets to work on the lock. Luckily, his skill far exceeds the quality of the lock, though it does take a couple of agonizing minutes.
I think normally a roll at disadvantage is suggested for an improvised tool, but it's kind of moot at this point because:
If the crew on this floor have not been alerted, they are once the door is opened as items are piled up behind it and clang to the floor.
In addition to your own gear, the armory contains: fifteen scimitars, ten spears, five light crossbows, five maces, and ten daggers, ten sets of leather armor, and one breastplate.
"GODSDAMMIT!" a voice thunders as one of the doors swings open. "I swear to Titania and the whole Unseelie Court, if you boggles are setting traps again..." A large human stops dead as he spies you: "Hmpf! Well, you are definitely not authorized to remove gear from the armory. BOGGLES! Get out here!"
Two small fey shuffle out of the crew quarters aft, and a second door opens to reveal the soot-stained tiefling first-mate, who chuckles: "Prison break, is it? Capn's not gonna like that -- let's get you all back to the brig, eh?"
Grab up whatever gear you can and get ready for combat!
fyi I am still in town today and tomorrow, so I can answer questions (or post the odd snarky comment!), but given how long combat tends to take, I'm going to wait until July 16 to start this fight.
DM Paguroid
What kind of fey are they?
They are boggles, which are a trickster fey.
Braith Ablewillow
Braith snatches up her mace and shield - she'll come back for her crossbow later if there's time.
She stares a whole few seconds at the tiefling before she figures out his sarcasm. Nope, not going back. is her charismatic reply.
Gideon Dawnbringer
|
Gideon grabs up his favorite brace of daggers, and his trusty rapier, and takes the time to put them in their familiar locations. He eyes his backpack, but then decides he can come back for that stuff later... or if he's dead it won't matter to him anyway. Then hustles after the others.
Jaylen Greystone
1 person marked this as a favorite.
Jaylen decides to stay in serpent form after the cell guards are taken care of and breifly considers trying eat one of them when Braith suggests getting rid of the bodies. “It would take too long to digest a body that large.” the Druid ponders.
Eventually he joins the others as he slithers his way to the upper decks.
Stealth roll: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9 good thing you weren’t relying on me
Initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17 Jaylen, hoping the pirates are not expecting a large snake attempts to hide behind the stairwell to the north and is going to attempt to sneak around using the boxes and crates to wind through for cover. Ideally when the pirates engage, he will have the ability to strike a pirate from a hidden position.
DM Paguroid
Braith: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Gideon: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Jacka-Lope: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Jaylen: 17 = 17
Toki: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Boggles: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Ferdeth & Rungrin: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (9) + 0 = 9
Round 1
Boggles
Jaylen
Toki
Gideon
Jacka-Lope
Rungrin
Ferdeth
Braith
The boggles each open a dimensional rift in the floor below them; corresponding rifts open in ceiling next to the companionways near you. The weird fey giggle uncontrollably as they scrape viscous goo from their skin and dribble it through the portals, where it pools on the floor.
STR DC 11 to move through the green circle (sticky); DEX DC 11 to move through the yellow circle (slippery). Moving through the crates between the companionways is difficult terrain, so double movement.
Everyone is up! Well... everyone except Braith, who can post her action now, or wait until Ferdeth and Rungrin have acted
Toki Sigurdson
Toki tip-toes through the crates and moves up to Ferdeth and swings at her! Aiming for nonlethal, in case he does enough damage to drop her, however unlikely... Handaxe: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22 Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9 slashing.
DM Paguroid
Oh wow -- 9 is exactly enough damage to take her out!
Toki slaps the first mate in the temple with the flat of his axe, and she immediately drops to the floor, unconscious.
Thereby saving everyone from Burning Hands...
DM Paguroid
GM, you explain what is who on the map, besides us please?
Oh sure -- sorry about that. The boggles are on the far left. The piratey-looking one is Rungrin, the quartermaster. Toki is standing next to the first mate, Ferdeth.
Additionally, the yellow circle is a puddle of slippery liquid; the green is a puddle of sticky goo. (the other shapes are part of the map -- the white circles are the masts and the squares are boxes.)
Braith Ablewillow
When it's Braith's turn...
Guiding Bolt: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
Damage: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 1, 3) = 11
Braith grasps her holy symbol and sends a beam of bright light headed at one of the fey. Her time "in the hole" makes the attack a bit weaker than you're used to seeing, but it still is effective. If that's actually a miss, then it was a warning shot! She then will move up as far as she can, going towards the green pool because she doesn't know what it is.
Str check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18 Woot
DM Paguroid
Who is the satyr looking thing?
As mentioned, the enemy next to Toki is the first mate, Ferdeth. They are a tiefling. I've placed a red X there so you will know they are unconscious.
Jaylen Greystone
Jaylen will slither forward 20ft (square below Toki) and ready an action to strike one of the pirates if the get within range 10ft reach.
The large serpent snakes through the crates and coils itself ready to strike.
In the event of the readied action going off: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Piercing: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Con 11: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 4) = 10 half on save
Crit: 1d4 ⇒ 1
Gideon Dawnbringer
|
Gideon... pulling one of his daggers moves forward.
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23 DEX Check
Throws Dagger at the Quatermaster
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12 Dagger Thrown
1d4 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 Point
"I will not be held captive"!
DM Paguroid
Lots of great rolls by everybody!
As mentioned, Toki's blow knocks out the first mate, Ferdeth.
Gideon's dagger finds a weak seam in Rungrin's leather armour, and Jacka-Lope's chicken flaps over to peck a boggle on the head.
Not liking the look of Toki, Rungrin swaggers over to engage the fighter:
Mace v Toki: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 131d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Mace v Jaylen: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 131d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Jaylen, because of where Gideon is located, I don't think the pirate would move to a space where you could attack him -- he would have an enemy on three sides.
Finally, a beam of radiant energy flies from Braith's hand to strike a boggle. I moved you up into melee -- let me know if that's not correct!
Round 2
Boggle (short)
Boggle (tall) -15
Jaylen
Toki
Gideon
Jacka-Lope
Rungrin -6
Ferdeth
Braith
The boggles look at each other, then back at you all. In sync, they open new portals in the walls next to them, reach up through the floor next to Braith and Gideon, and attack!
Boggle punch v Braith: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 21d6 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
Boggle punch v Gideon: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 51d6 - 1 ⇒ (5) - 1 = 4
oof -- looks like you all used up the dice magic
The boggles flail about but are unable to connect.
Everyone may post their Round 2 actions!
Toki Sigurdson
Toki sneers, Finally, a man worth killing...
Handaxe: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13 Dang, I think that is a miss unless he is unarmored... Will roll damage, just in case.
Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Action Surge
Handaxe: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13 Gods, I hate this dice roller... >.<
Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
DM Paguroid
Yay! No doubt he has buckets of hp! >.<
Gotta make up for the low AC somehow!
roadrunner ala Looney Tunes ;)
lol -- oops!
Braith Ablewillow
Braith will club whomever is closest should that change by the time it's her turn. Braith had drawn her mace on the sprint over, and....
Mace: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
...cracks the captain on the side. She keeps an eye on that funny creature she'd injured, hoping they remain little more than a distraction.
Jaylen Greystone
@DM
“Jaylen, because of where Gideon is located, I don't think the pirate would move to a space where you could attack him -- he would have an enemy on three sides.”
I mentioned in the post, you probably just missed it that the snake has a 10ft reach with its attacks.
@Toki
“Toki sneers, Finally, a man worth killing...”
One of my all time favorite movie quotes.
Jaylen weaves back and forth in a hypnotic pattern mimicking that of a cobra before striking its prey.
Bite (10ftreach): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
I guess we’ll see how garbage his Dex is after all.
Piercing JIC: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
DC11 poison, half on save: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 6) = 11
DM Paguroid
Oh shoot -- sorry about that Jaylen. The good news is that, between your two attacks and Toki's, Rungrin is now very dead.
DM Paguroid
Okay, gonna bot Gideon
Dagger Thrown: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
1d4 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Rungrin drops and the taller boggle right after. Braith steps forward and whacks the shorter boggle.
For its part, the shorter boggle looks at you all -- uninjured and bristling with weapons -- and remembers that they didn't want to be in this fight in the first place. Opening a portal in the doorway next to it, the boggle leaps through.
Braith can take an Attack of Opportunity. If you want to pursue, it'll take a Perception roll to see where it went.
Braith Ablewillow
I feel like a good cleric is not the type to pursue a fleeing enemy, so evens she thinks it's coming back, odds she thinks it's running away. 1d20 ⇒ 10. The dice say mace to the face.
AOO: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Toki Sigurdson
Toki looks over the pirate captain then turns to bind the first mate, Well now. Where were we headed again? Looks like we have a new ship!
Is our Halfling captain friend with us?
DM Paguroid
Braith clips the boggle on the shin as it dives through the portal -- injuring it, but it is still alive.
Couple things: Rungrin was the quartermaster, not the captain (the captain is Boris Blutovich). Currently, you are on the mid deck, with some rooms left to explore if you want. You aren't sure what awaits you on the upper deck, but that's where the captain's quarters can be found. The halflings are not very courageous, and are hiding in the lower deck until they're sure it's safe to leave.
DM Paguroid
Things that you find:
Armoury
All of your own gear
15 scimitars
10 spears
5 light crossbows
5 maces
10 daggers
10 sets of leather armour
1 breastplate
Ship's stores (where you are now)
General equipment for the operation of the ship such as tarps, extra sails, rope, etc.
On Rungrin
1 mace
1 heavy crossbow
5 crossbow bolts
1 leather armour
On Ferdeth
1 dagger
1 components pouch
The boggles don't have any gear. You figure that the two rooms to the north are Ferdeth's and Rungrin's quarters. Mess and galley to the south; crew quarters west.
DM Paguroid
I am a little confused. Did my attack hit? I have noticed that a few times my attacks/actions are not included in DM summaries for the round.
Sorry about that -- I was just summarizing for expediency:
"Rungrin drops and the taller boggle right after."
i.e.: You were the only one who attacked the taller boggle and it died, so yes, your attack hit. Similarly, both Toki and Jaylen's attacks hit Rungrin, so he also died.
I will try to be more diligent about mentioning individual attacks in the future. I try to do that in a way that makes for a more interesting read than "you hit / you miss" but things have been busy lately and I guess that's meant I'm less creative and so this combat just ended with "you win!" Again, apologies -- this wasn't meant as a slight to anyone in particular.
Braith Ablewillow
And we appreciate every effort, thank you!
Braith will make sure to stow the weapons on the bodies / prisoner elsewhere, and follows Toki's comment with an agreement, it would be nice for someone, not as good as her armor though. Hey man, that low charisma has to come out sometimes!
Is everyone okay? Is anyone injured enough to need healing? Pretty sure we're all okay.
After we search around a little, So, is everyone ready to press on? We should overthrow Blueb*tch and those who remain while they don't know we're freed yet. You aren't sure if her slip up on the captain's name is unintentional or an attempt at humor.
Gideon Dawnbringer
|
sorry about that. Seems I lost my dot so no new posts were showing up in my Open Games Log.
Gideon grabs two more daggers... (Can never have two many knives).
"This stuff has some value... though I wonder where they were bound so fully stocked. Perhaps we can take this ship over, and sell this stuff when we get to port".
DM Paguroid
You were put in the brig and then you sailed for a bit and are now anchored, but you don't know much else at this point.
