Current Weather Effects: Mirage Mist

Mirage Mist:
The eerie fog is thick enough to obscure visibility beyond a range of 500 feet. Creatures viewed from more than 100 feet away are concealed. In addition, the mist distorts peripheral vision, causing one to periodically notice strange shapes moving and shifting about at the limits of their vision. All Perception checks attempted within mirage mist suffer a –1 status penalty as a result, and all DCs for Survival checks to Sense Direction are increased by 5.

Season of Ghosts

A terrible curse descends upon the town of Willowshore! Located in haunted Shenmen in the heart of the sprawling continent of Tian Xia, this horror-themed campaign pits the heroes against supernatural threats and the harsh realities of facing an upcoming winter when all contact with the outside world has been cut off by a mysterious wall of fog. What fiendish menace might be behind the Willowshore Curse, and can it be stopped before everyone in town is lost?

A tall thin man, with dark greasy hair tied neatly in a bun stalks through the forest along the edge of town. A long pole with a thick chopping blade tied to his back frees up his hands for carrying bundles of wood. Tirelessly he makes trips in and out of the forest, dropping bundles of firewood at the doorsteps of homes, making brief eye contact with anyone that stops to greet him. "For you." He replies each time, before quickly heading back into the woods for another load, his lanky height boosted by strange looking shoes flash white while moving between the trees.

Those along the outskirts of town, both along the north bank and the south bank have seen this man for years. Some see him as a good omen, others as a sign of a harsh winter ahead. A few see his generosity as a threat to their own livelihoods. He works dawn til dusk, every day of the year.. for nothing, how can we compete with that!

The lone figure sits hunched over at the river bank, a long pole dangling off to one side, and turns to gaze off towards the setting sun.

It seems as if the fish are not finding the taste of my worms to their liking...I may need to dip into my dried fish again... Pucle sighs softly. A rustling off to one side draws his attention, and his gaze shifts slightly. His sharp vision picks out the lone figure gathering the firewood for the other townsfolk.

Right on time I see. Much as the rising moon, he moves with...purpose. He nods his head slightly in greetings to the odd-gaited man before the tengu briefly shivers, thankful for his feathery skin here.

Perhaps another long winter awaits, he ponders, though many see the ill, I see...something else. I wonder if the Sneakerz shares these thoughts.... A movement from his pole catches his eye and he smoothly lays a clawed hand on the pole, waiting for the telltale sign of a strike...but it does not repeat.

He slowly rises to his feet preparing to draw in his fishing line and turns to see the man is gone. Ahh, he will return here...as will I.

Amila sees off Kazuma Oono as he leaves her little place on the far outskirts of town. He seemed happy with the jade bracelet she'd made for him, so she was sure he'd be back. Which was always nice because it gave her a chance to practice the kitsune language with him. She cleans up the tea set that she had served the opera director from, and then goes into her sleeping quarters to put his payment away. Seeing her little altar to the Cosmic Caravan, she silently thanks Tsukiyo for the inspiration for the piece.

Thank you also, Dawnflower, she mentally addresses the currently foremost of the little idols. Summertime is nigh....

"Oh! I'd almost forgotten," she chides herself aloud. "The Reenactment Festival is coming up, and it's time I participated again. It's been a decade since the last time I did, and it's always so much fun." She chuckles as she realizes she's been talking out loud. Eh, not like anyone will think I'm any crazier than they already believe of me.

Amila is startled from her reverie by a noise from outside. Thinking that Oono might have returned, she hurries to the door and flings it open. But there is no one there, only a bundle of firewood. She's a bit sad that she missed the woodsman yet again. She really wanted to get to know him better at some point. "Thank you!" she calls out to the forest, hoping that he will hear her, but accepting that even if he doesn't the spirits and the gods will know of her thanks.

With a deep breath, Charlies stands up, his hand resting on the hilt of his dagger. The silver blade gleams faintly in the dim light as he makes his way towards the exit.

His mind and body seem to move on their own accord, leading him to the very spot where he once encountered his twin as a different person - a disembodied hooded figure, its spectral hand eerily resembling a sword.

He murmurs a name, a whisper that hangs in the air like a secret carried by the wind. "Pollux." Behind him, the very figure he invoked begins to unravel, emitting a muffled scream that echoes in the stillness of the place.

The Summer That Never Was

Chapter One: To Light the Night

The first rays of morning light filter through the trees, casting their red and yellow glow over the six motionless forms that lay on the hard earth below. A crisp chill hangs in the air and all is silent, no movement to be found, not even the rustle of the wind through the leaves. It's as if, for just a single moment, the entire world has come to a complete and utter stop.

Then, a twitch here, the flutter of eyelids there, a muffled groan. The six figures, only sleeping, begin to wake. Yet the waking world brings with it surprise. Confusion. You remember being dragged out of town by your fellow townsfolk and into the forest the previous evening, serving your roles as 'abductees' for this year's Reenactment Festival. And you remember settling in to wait until morning when the organizer of this year's festival, Choe Chung-hu, would come to 'ransom' you (and bring a hot breakfast). Yet Chung-hu is nowhere to be found. Even stranger is the fact that you're certain that this place isn't where you went to sleep at last night. And the straw mats and red blindfolds you'd been ceremoniously trussed up in seem to be cruder, filthier, and less comfortable today.

Just what is going on?

Petal Sakura. Or Petal. Or Sakura. She isn't big into names but Willowshore insisted in some kind of moniker. Many have noted how her wings are like large petals from a cherry blossom, growing throughout her back and flapping when she needs to boost herself. Her bright red hair and similar eye color also lent themselves to the motif. And the petals growing out of her front was always a topic starter.

Whatever it takes to be welcomed in, she was ready to help.

The second thing people noticed was her green skin. Petal always reminded them that she doesn't need to eat. The sun provides her with enough nourishment. It kept her bills cheap, too. As far as she knew, she came from the ground and the ground listens to her nightly reports.

She made sure to sleep in a dirt field for a few hours before the Reenactment Festival. Wrapped up in a mat wasn't her ideal way of rest, but she waited until sunrise as promised. With a bit of a tussle she unfurled the mat and crawled out.

"Good morning!" She looks up at the other volunteers. "Does rescue normally take this long?"

Good morning.. Sneakerz slowly opens an eye, everything is blurry and his mind is full of cobwebs. Always cobwebs. Slowly he struggles and strains against the tied mat until the bindings break.

During the festival and feast, Amila enjoyed all that it had to offer. She still found Tien food new and enticing, even after a few decades living in Willowshore. There was always some dish or street fare that she hadn't tried yet, and this year she finally had the courage to sample the skewer of grilled mealworms. They were surprisingly good, and she decided that although certainly not her favorite thing (Mr. Chang's lime-sugared dough-balls currently held that honor), she'd encourage others to try them, too.

So, when she awoke and realized something was ... wrong ... her first thought was that maybe she shouldn't have eaten so many of the dough-balls. Or maybe she should have just passed on the mealworms. But as she realized that the others are also confused, she decided it likely wasn't the food.

Having participated a couple times before, Amila knew the trick to making it easy to get out of the bindings in the morning - take a really deep breath and push out a little at the knot as they tie it so the mat isn't so tight. That made it easy for Amila to wiggle right out of the tied mat and stand to greet her fellow "abductees."

Far taller than the average Tian-Xia native, the Mwangi women's skin is also far lighter than would be expected. Her long white hair is partially bound in a braid around the front while the rest hangs down her back almost to her waist. Her dress is of local design and print, but the various pieces of jewelry are all fusions of Mwangi, Tien, and even other styles.

"Good morning, all," she says with a slight bow. "To answer your question, Petal, no, rescue does not normally take this long. At least, it never has before when I've participated. Mr. Choe should have been here by now."

She looks around at the clearing and her fellows. "Puc-Lee, I didn't know you were taking part this year. We haven't had a chance to chat in a long while."

She then turns to the woodsman. "Sneakerz, you are called? I'm Amila. I'm sorry I've never gotten to meet you formally, but I do appreciate the bundles of firewood," she says as she gives the gaunt man a deep bow. Now that she's closer to him, she notices his "state," as he calls it. "You are reanimated?" she asks as she gently touches the bones of his hand.

Castor found himself once again reluctantly entangled in the Reenactment Festival tradition, resurrecting the haunting memories of losing his twin. Despite the familiar nightmares that resurfaced, his will had been fortified since the last encounter; the presence of his twin brother, now a changed individual, served as an anchor for his resolve.

"I am Castor, and this is my brother Pollux," he introduces themselves to the fellow 'abductees' awaiting their awakening. Having been roused earlier, Castor silently communed with his brother as they bided their time.

When the moment arrived to address the group, he speaks to them flatly. "I think we should get back to the village ourselves," he declares, his tone resolute. "They might have forgotten about us," he adds, emphasizing the urgency of their return to the familiar confines of their community.

Though the situation is certainly strange, at least you know roughly where you're at and how to get back to town. It's a bit worrisome that your fellow 'abductee' - an aiuvarin woman by the name of Shadow Fang - hasn't woken up yet but there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with her that you can discern at a glance. Perhaps she's simply just that deep of a sleeper? If you hadn't already noticed, Sneakerz doesn't talk all that much. Maybe he's shy, or maybe he's not used to talking. Time will tell.

Before

Shadow groans as she wakes, the ground feeling more solid than when she fell asleep the night before. Her stomach growls as she realizes that breakfast is overdue. Calming herself, she remains quiet, ears straining to hear, if anything, is around her. She hears her fellow abductees rouse and realizes that something is wrong, very wrong...

She slips the bindings and removes the blindfold. Looking around and seeing her fellow abductees, she realizes that something is very wrong all right.

"I assume you are also participants in the reenactment festival?" her slightly musical voice betraying her elven heritage. "Shadow Fang, " she says shortly, "But we should get properly introduced once we figure out what's going on."

Now

"We'd best be heading back to town to see what's really going on. I'll be sticking to the shadows"

With Shadow Fang now awake and your bearings gained, everyone is ready to head back to town. You know that Amila's remark on your path is correct; once you get back to the Duyue River you'll cross the bridge and head towards the Spider Gate and into Southbank. But as you prepare to set off, a faint rustling can be heard in the foliage nearby...and it's growing louder, heading your way. At first, you think that maybe it's just Choe finally arriving with that promised breakfast...but about the time that you realize that there's way too much rustling for just one man, another sound catches your attention.

Low, malevolent hissing.

As you ready yourselves, three giant insect-like creatures come scuttling out of the trees. Their hissing grows louder as they spot you and move to attack!

Glimpse Weakness: The first ally that hits the target with a successful Strike deals 2 additional precision damage (equal to 1 + this spell's level rank), and then the spell ends.

Amila has guidance as an amped cantrip that can be used as a Reaction. If any ally would Fail or Crit Fail their save versus the poison AND the +1 bonus from guidance would make the difference, she'll use her reaction to retroactively apply the bonus. Full text is on her character sheet under the Amped spoiler. Oh, and Amped guidance is exempt from the usual 1-hour limitation on previous uses of guidance, so even Petal could benefit.

Season of Ghosts

Time blips and wobbles for a moment, as Sneakerz gazes upon Red and forces them to contemplate their actions as they move to bite Petal. While the creature persists in its course of action and bites down, this decision doesn't go unpunished as Red grows noticeably enfeebled!

(Petal takes no damage from the initial bite, but still needed to make the Fort save, which I'll resolve below.)

The strange creatures aren't the only ones eager for battle. Shadow Fang is quick to draw her rapier and maneuvers around to try and strike Red from behind, only to miss and nearly poke Petal in the eye.

Amila knows that these things are giant centipedes. Hunters and scavengers that live amid dung and detritus, centipedes are a relatively common and often reviled threat faced by adventurers. Scurrying about with surprising speed on the scores of legs attached to their long, segmented bodies, centipedes strike with poisoned mandibles to slow and torment their prey with a vicious toxin before they settle down to feed in slow and disgusting leisure. Thankfully, there aren't any special defenses to worry about when dealing with them.

Amila:

That said, these giant centipedes are acting quite strangely - and aren't normally capable of speech. You suspect they might be under the influence of foul spirits.

She then focuses on Red, using her magic to highlight a small weak spot in the centipede's chitin and then to give Petal a bit of a boost. And a boost might just be what's needed, as the poison begins to burn through the little sprite's veins!

Petal Poison Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2

But she also recognizes these things as giant centipedes and knows that such creatures tend to fare poorly against things that attack the mind. (Will saves are weakest.) But for now, she opts to fight back in a more practical way - she channels power into the plantlife, forming a club to pummel Red with...

*CRUNCH*

...and smashes the centipede into paste on the very first swing! Working as a team clearly pays off. (Petal can do something else with her last action.)

With Red now taken care of, Castor and Pollux turn their attention to nearby Purple. Castor uses his own magic to give his sibling a boost in power, which Pollux uses to cleave through Purple like a hot knife through butter! (Adjusted Pollux's movement to account for Red being down already).
