Daehalya looks a bit concerned about how this will work, but wraps her hair -- and long, distinctive ears -- under an ushanka, the plain white fur sticking out in the green forest. It takes a few attempts, but she does try. The disguise kit includes a pair of dark glasses, which she dons in hopes of hiding her lack of sclera.

Yup, delete them if you use them.
The citizen guards quickly draw weapons as Nicky emerges from the woodline proclaiming the Circus is coming in five days time. They clap excitedly as he swallows the sword, turning and watching as the tiefling enters through the cities gates.
While many of the city’s elven structures have been repaired, the original stone curtain wall that ringed it has been left to time, its crumbling masonry now covered in strangling ivy. While the stones seemingly provide little protection, most residents claim the ivy itself is more than it appears, believing it would animate and devastate any invading force that tried to cross it.
This diversion is plenty enough for the doctored up Daehalya and Ezgara to make it into the busy streets filled with majority human and a small smattering of fey and gnomes. Completely unfamiliar with the streets, venues or even where the sevenarches are located you just know you need to try and find the arches quick before anyone in the superstitious city notices the elves.
Onye Dinta
"The gates cannot be difficult to find. Onye Dinta expects them to be in the center of the city," the catfolk hypothesizes.
Daehalya Shadowsun
Daehalya grimaces slightly as they make a bunch of promises that certainly won't be kept -- based on what little she knows of him, she suspects Professor Ritalson doesn't even like poodles, perhaps not even any dogs at all -- even if there were a circus. She's used to having her ears tucked away in the bitter cold of home, but it's hot here, and she suspects they're starting to sweat. Most people don't even realize elven ears can sweat, and it's hardly something she can complain about, even if she were so inclined.
Still, she does want to know what happened to her, so she settles her concerns and looks around.
"Yes, that seems reasonable," she says. "Perhaps we should ask for help?"

Knowing the arches are near the center of the city you begin to head that direction. And like most non-citizens ask several questions about them.
Odioki's Diplomacy (T): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Daehalya Shadowsun's Diplomacy (T): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
Daehalya finds a tired barman polishes a glass while musing about recent events in a rundown looking bar that just opened for the day. “Ever since gorgas started hunting closer to the city, there’s been two Oakstewards posted at the arches, plus an ensorcelled rope. If you even try to go under or over it, it starts screaming like an angry squirrel. Birds and things are always setting it off. It’s a real headache.” He sets the glass down and works his way down the line trying to get prepared for the lunch rush. "The whole thing is a giant headache if you ask me. [b]“That alarm don’t extend to the plaza’s entrance, though. That’s how the druids go in and out without setting it off.”
Thanking the man for his time you make your way to the Arch plaza. Seven stone archways stand in a neat circle in this central town plaza. Each arch is twenty feet tall and ten feet wide. Multicolored lights of unknown provenance warp and weave across the arches’ stone faces.
Surrounding the arches is a circle of dwarf oak trees, each just ten feet tall. A hempen rope tied around the tree trunks forms a barricade whose only gap is just south of the arches. Shops, inns, and merchant wagons surround
the busy square on all sides. To the southeast, a small podium rises five feet high.
The recent uptick in gorga attacks has prompted the Oakstewards to make a show of bolstering security. Two low-ranking Oakstewards are posted here at all hours, with one usually standing guard at the break in the barricade while the other patrols the Arch Plaza. Since no one expects trouble this deep in the city, the guards are casual in their duty, often chatting with each other and passersby.
How you accomplish the task of getting the measurement is up to you. Some skills or tasks will have a higher DC and obviously be more difficult than others But below are some examples:
Diplomacy or Deception (Talk the guards into letting you take the measurement
Stealth (Sneak past the guards)
Deception of Performance (Distract the guards and or Lure them away)
Attack! (Overpower the Guards - This will open up combat)

Ezgara creeps into an alleyway and locates a fat pigeon who's pecking at a pile of rotten meat. He crouches down and stares it in the eyes for several long minutes, locked in an intense challenge to see who blinks first. The pigeon stares back.
Finally, Ezgara's good eye can no longer take it and he blinks. He snorts. "Proof of superiority, Pigeon. I amend a meaningless cause. I waver from the path of uselessness, yet you do not. For I am wise. Wiser than Donkey. Wiser than Pigeon. We know who is Leader now; I command." The pigeon continues to stare at him. "Go defecate upon the druid's head." He turns and gives the Oaksteward a cunning look. "Defecate upon the druid's head. Do you understand?"
Wild Empathy (Diplomacy): 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (7) - 1 = 6
The bird launches into the air and does indeed drop a gooey turd upon the druid's head.
A moment later Ezgara dances out of the alleyway, howling and waving his stick at a pigeon. A white smear dribbles down his forehead. The bird flies up to a rooftop and cocks its head, watching the old elf wave his stick ineffectually. "Ingrate!"

Onye Dinta's Stealth (T): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Onye grabs ahold of the glass rod and quickly uses the opportunity that Ezgara is providing. Though Ezgara's plan isn't working out the way he intended the crazed elf is setting quite the scene that seems to draw the attention of the two Oakstewards as well as several of the locals.
"Mom, what is an in-grate?" The monther quickly grabs her children witha scowl and rushes them away from the situation.
With mere moments to spare Onye is able to rush through the entrance that the aokstewards use to not set off the alarms. Thanks to the bartender you found a suitable route. Growing sweaty the light begins to glow predominantly purple, though a few bulbs of other colors glow faintly. Onye manages to get beyond the rope just as the Oaksteward turns back to its post.

With the readings secured Onye quickly hands the glowing scepter back to a stunned Nicholo. Grabbing ahold of the poop-covered elf you make all due haste back out of the city as wiping the bird poop away will likely also wipe away some of the cosmetics.
As you exit the front gate the guards recognize the tiefling, because well he is likely the only tiefling in the city at the moment. "Say, do you have any fliers to pass around, my kids would love to see the circus."

A few miles down the road you meet back up with Fianara. "That was fast!" She also looks quite amazed that both Daehalya and Ezgara are alive. "It must be true. the curse must be lifted. Do you feel off at all? Any tingling..." She is cut short as she notices the purple lights on the scepter.
Fianara points gleefully to her device, where one of the bulbs shines a brilliant purple. “Just as I suspected!” she exclaims. “Illusion magic.” She points to a different, unlit bulb. “And not a trace of conjuration. Those arches are as fake as a kelpie’s smile.”
She settles back in her chair. “Well then, a deal’s a deal. Here’s what I know:"
“The real Seven Arches are hidden somewhere south, in the Wilewood, which is why the Oakstewards restrict travel there. They also post guards. On the night of your Missing Moment, all seven of the guards at the Seven Arches stepped through the portals, just like you did, but only one of them returned—a self-righteous Oaksteward named Bolan."
“When he got back, Bolan was a changed man... and not in a good way. After the high council chewed him out for shirking his post, he stole an important Oaksteward artifact and hid out in the Wilewood along with some other malcontents. From there, he’s been sending cronies to the city to harass the citizens, undermine the Oakstewards’ authority, and recruit other discontented druids to his cause. His ultimate aim, as far as I can tell, is a full-on coup.” Fianara concludes: “I don’t know what happened to this Bolan character when he went through the arch. But whatever he knows, I figure you’ll want to know it, too.”

"Strange," Daehalya muses. "I wonder if any of us were transformed similarly." She's sincere, wonder if her own attitude has been affected, but her eyes also stray momentarily toward Ezgara.

Ezgara's eye thins to a slit and his mouth hangs open as he thinks. "The maze opens. The world is in flux. Oaksteward ignorance is not worthy of these portentous times. One to kill. One to tolerate. For the moment, symbiotic paths. For the moment only. We'll see."

Fianara sends a letter out into the city to have Lemma meet you all as soon as she has tie available.
You wait for several hours and around dusk as Lemma begins to make her way down the trail. It is a bit of an unexpected sight as one of Sevenarches’ few halflings and due to her full-sized horse animal companion, Mulberri. Reaching your position she leans down on the horses neck as Fianara waves. "Thanks for coming Lemma, I wouldn't have sent for you if it wasn't important."
The halfling looks a bit skeptical as she purses her lips. "So what's going on?" She looks across to all of you. "Care to explain?"
Daehalya Shadowsun
"Yes, we have need to travel into the Wilewood," Daehalya says, glossing over their exact need. "But we have heard there are certain dangers there that relate to the Oakstewards, and we thought perhaps we have some common path."
GM Tyranius
|
"What sort of common path would that be?" Lemma retorts a bit annoyed at having to come clear out here. "We know the seven arches in town are fakes Lemma and we know about your Bolan situation. They can help." Fianara chimes in as Lemma seems a bit taken aback by this news.
Lemma frowns but opens up a bit more. "The Oakstewards are stretched a bit thin. The seeming disappearance of the obnubilate curse has created not just an ethical conundrum—as allowing elves in could be a disaster if the curse returned—but a matter of national defense: without the curse, some fear the strained relationship between Sevenarches and neighboring Kyonin might blossom into an actual conflict. Factor in the increased gorga attacks, and the Oakstewards have no time for Bolan’s troublemaking."
Bolan’s crimes go beyond mere rebellion." Lemma says, "Before he left, Bolan stole the gate key for the real Seventh Arch, a fanciful jade amulet shaped like a leaf called the Shadewither Key. I've heard rumors that he plans to use the key in some sort of evil ritual at the arches a few nights from now."
She seems a bit defeated but with little other choice. "We don't know where Bolan is hiding in the woods, but I do know the location of the real Seven Arches. Give me an hour and I'll be back with a barkwrit—an official pass allowing you to roam freely in Sevenarches, including visiting the Wilewood and the aiudara." She holds up a hand to pause any sort of celebration. "In exchange, you need to disrupt whatever ritual Bolan is planning, reclaim the Gatekey, and capture the rebel Oaksteward for to be punished for his crimes."
Nicholo Reiland

Nicky listens to the information exchanges between these two.
We see your dilemma. We accept your exchange of writ of passage for your task. It doesn't make sense for us to ignore a possible evil ritual. As the saying goes, "evil rituals bring evil things upon completion.".
There's no such saying, and Nicky knows it, he's just attempting to annoy Ezgara and Fianara with some drivel. Like nails on a chalkboard. Not enough to derail the conversation, but enough to put their analytical minds on a skreetching sound edge.
Before yo go - can you tell us more about this Shadewither Key. A key doesn't get that funky of a name without *some* kinda history. I mean I call Onye - "VampireBane" because of our travels together.

"The Shadewither key is able to control the shadows themselves. You can cast shadows about yourself, or even peel them away creating a shadowy double of yourself for those that use the key." Lemma explains in hopes it may be useful against Bolan.
With your agreement Lemma leaves and returns an hour later with the barkwrit before bidding you farewell.

During the night Onye stirs restlessly as he whimpers restlessly. He awakens to find everyone else around him fast and deep asleep. Looking around he isn't sure who's shift it is supposed to be and sits up quickly. Letting his eyes adjust to the darkness something strange catches his eyes. Standing in the woods is a man in a fine coat and a monstrous mask of white fur and thick horns watching you.
Onye Dinta

Nicky rolls to his knees. A bit uncertain.
No, no, that wasn't me making the barking noises.
He says groggily as he clears the sleep from his mind.

Oh, something real is going down.
He shakes his head vigorously, to fully clear his mind and looks about for trouble.

As he speaks the last, his tone deepens, his eyes glow white, a wind swirls around him to whip his mane and clothes about, and arcs of lightning crackles down his arms.

Onye's anger grows as lightning crackles down his arms. As it does so the masked man walks away and Onye feels a painful jolt. Standing up and looking around Onye realizes he has been asleep during this entire encouter as all four of his companions stare at him in bewilderment.
@Onye- You gain the Awakened Power Feat immediately.
Onye Dinta
The amurrun looks around at his companions. "A dream walk?" he says, sounding dubious, and untangles himself from his blanket. "Onye Dinta was visited by a silent stranger in mask of white fur. The stranger was strange as fey. Luhar would not approve of his tricks."
Ezgara
Ezgara farts and rolls about in the rotten old grain sack he uses for a sleeping bag. Somehow he seems to shift nervously even in his sleep, muttering as he dreams. He's oblivious to the unfolding scene.
In the morning he catches wind of the incident, listening carefully to the description of the masked, horned creature. He scowls. "Gorga?" He pokes Onye with his gnarled stick. "Longhorn? Parasomnia?"
"Pah. All is well, Onye! Heee hee. Trust Ezgara."
The donkey dances away when Ezgara tries to load it up, spilling his gear on the ground. "Idiot! He shoves his gear back into the pack and shoulders it himself before making several unbalanced attempts to leap onto the mule's back, skinny legs scrambling. "Assurances insincere. All is unwell. Clearly gorga. Are they concerned? They should be. Fear Kyonin? Raze sevenarches. Burn it to ash. Who clutches the strings? Lemna, Bolan? Are they deceived? Are we? How could it be elsewise? Who carries the key? A journey to fabled arches. Heptagonic truths converge with the clarity of blades.”
He falls into the mud one last time and screams. "Shall I carry you too, Donkey? Dolt! None is more stubborn than Ezgara! He is made from ice and stone!" Ezgara stands up and trudges furiously down the trail, carrying all his gear on his back and tugging the stubborn mule, who seems quite happy to be unburdened, along behind him.
I/Ezgara think it was the Gorga. I do not trust Lemna either. Who carries the key?

"Did he harm you, Onye? What did he want?"

You wake up to find Onye thrashing about in his sleep.
Nicholo was the first awake and spies Onye tossing and turning in his sleep. Not understanding, until much later when the others become concerned and talk about "parasomnia's", does he think Onye's behavior as odd. Heck, Nicky's never known a Amurrun before. Maybe they always roll around in their sleep.
He was about to set up his practical joke, because the best time to set up your prop is when everyone is asleep. When the others start to stir.He laments on an opportunity lost, but promises to set it up tomorrow night.
********
After others discuss things and bring real concern to the table, Nicky makes a comment.
I'm thinking what Onye's thinking - this is another enemy/element.
Probably not a Gorga. I also don't think this is Bolan. We'd have heard a little hint that Oakstewards can dreamwalk. So, I don't think they can.
Anyone know the powers of Oakstewards? Of course now that I say it aloud - Bolan could have gotten strange powers obtained from Gatewalking.
Dang! We don't know a whole heck of a lot. We need more information.
And...Knowing is half the battle! G.I Joe!
Onye Dinta
"Onye Dinta cannot say what the stranger wanted or if he understood Taldane or sylvan," the catfolk says. He answers all of his companions' questions about the dream to the best of his recollection. "The stranger did not act violently, but he did not behave as a guest. When the stranger turned away, there was pain, and Onye Dinta awoke tangled in his blankets."

You speak more on the dream as you work you way through the marshes and swampland south towards the Wilewood to disrupt Bolan's ritual, return the Shadewither Key, and capture Bolan.
As the sun begins to set on the second day you begin to reach the borders of the Wilewood Forest. The Wilewood is the largest forest in Sevenarches, full of fey and wild magic, with rumors that as many as one in 10 animals here has been awakened to magical sentience. No roads larger than a footpath cut through its dense and tangled interior. As you pass through you feel the weight of countless unseen eyes upon you all at once.
With Lemma’s directions and the barkwrit, it’s simple enough for you to make your way through the forest to the Seven Arches.
The forest opens suddenly up into a clearing roughly four hundred feet across, its long grasses blowing in the wind across a gently rolling landscape. In the clearing’s center, a huge stone arch rises fifty feet into the sky. Smaller arches cluster around the massive gate.
From the clearing’s perimeter, you can see activity around the arches, but sound seems muffled, and the light here is strangely dimmer than it should be. The dimmer light makes it twilight,Dim Light so low light vision can see fine, but those without will need concealent checks.
You are currently 400' away from the gates.

Ezgara
Ezgara is exhausted from walking all day and carrying all his gear. He ties the donkey to a tree. “Fortunate for Donkey I am such a gentle and patient master. Stay put or I'll roast your hide off your bones. All will be made clear soon."
"Shhhh!" He scampers into the forest, allowing Daehalya to scout ahead. "Hee hee, hurry!"
