Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

"The Crash"

It's rare a single moment has so universally changed the state of the galaxy. In a single devastating instant, the Drift - all of it - failed. Once a plane enabling travel throughout the stars, when what quickly just became known as 'The Crash' occurred many starships traveling through it at the time seemed to vanish, with more becoming stranded as the Drift’s physics warped and evolved around them. The rest were ejected from the Drift, not only dumped into random places on the Material Plane but also hurled into the Inner and Outer Planes where Drift technology couldn’t facilitate their return. Travelers attempting to enter the Drift found it inaccessible. Communications bounced back to their senders as Drift-aligned relays ceased functioning. For days, utter chaos reigned.

That Crash was weeks ago, and in that time some semblance of recovery has begun. The Drift has righted itself...partially. Drift travel currently functions intermittently with travel times significantly longer, the journeys themselves more hazardous due to new and unmapped phenomena emerging, and reports of Drift engines still regularly malfunctioning.

In an effort to aid the fractured galaxy, the Starfinder Society has spent the last several weeks dedicating heavy resources towards aid and recovery. Each of you found yourselves called into service aboard one of the group's largest vessels: the Master of Stars. The Wayfinder leader Fitch coordinates several teams from her flagship, moving through Pact Worlds space in search of stranded spacefarers and starships while trying to track and monitor dangerous planar or material debris ejected from the Drift onto our plane. The Stars' quarters and holds are growing by the day not only with Starfinder agents, but with hundreds of survivors you've picked up and rescued already over the last month, each staying onboard until the starship returns back to Absalom Station.

Feel free to introduce yourselves to each other! What have you been trying to focus on in the last few weeks? And where were you right when the Crash itself occured?

Rani hadn't been in the Drift when the Crash itself occurred but had been in and out of the Drift over subsequent days as one of the teams searching for stranded Starfarers as well as collecting readings on the Drift itself to help ascertain what had happened. So, she was logging several hours as pilot, on her favourite Pegasus class starship Spitfire which she had described as a 'scrappy little ship'. Rani was also describing current Drift transitions as 'bumpy'.

Currently, after docking with the Master of Stars she was in the large messhall enjoying some cream buns and a mug of Poshkettle tea - not the wasabi flavour, but a berry fruity flavour. She had tried the wasabi once on a dare and had described it as 'hot enough for rocket fuel'. She was also dressed in a t-shirt over a bikini as her intent was to go for a swim later.

She had also put in a few messages to Celita to ask if there were any updates on why the Drift crashed and was keeping up with the latest research and conspiracy theories. Of course, she had to ask for help to figure out what all the sciency bits and fancy mathematics meant.

It has been one year now that Neroo retired from the Society, focussing more on her career on HoloTV. She was on Akiton, streaming her new Song, for a charity, to all her viewers and fans through the Pact World and Beyond when "the Crash" happened.

Thanks to her vast network of fans and her technological knowledge she was able to help numerous people to be saved or to go back home safely. But she quickly realized that the Society was the organization that could help more people than her own individual actions. So she decided to go back and reenlist!

Since then, she's on board of the Master of Stars helping Finch and other Venture Captains to rescue and help people, Starfinders or ordinary citizen.

Well known on the ship, she enjoyed taking sometime for herself in the machine room or participating in heated debates with her colleague on the origin of "the Crash".

But today, she is in the large messhall, working on her drone, to make some improvement and drinking some Poshkettle tea.

Neroo is a well known Lashunta, thanks for a participation and second place at the holoTV show Absalom Idol a few years back. Since then she joins the Starfinder Society, improving her audience while streaming her new, and heavy edited, adventures and missions until Dash smear campaign against the Society. After the backlash of Dash's campaign, she decided to quit the Society to focus more on her personal and professional life.

Azara happened to be doing an infosphere reading of his latest work
Romancing Rasheen
and hosting a multiday ask me anything session when everything Crashed.

Not particularly technical, he simply assumed that he had somehow messed up his connection. It was only after half an hour of turning things off and on and unplugging and plugging them back in that he decided to call someone for help. That someone was Duggar Ironhead, a dwarf miner who had joined him after a mission that freed him from corporate skullduggery.

Duggar was quick to update his comrade about the true cause of his technical difficulties and just as quick to explain why Abadarcorp was undoubtedly behind it.

Fortunately, Azara was on Absalom Station so he hurried to Starfinder headquarters to lend his aid. Taking the initiative when he didn't get an assignment quickly enough he took the role of an information officer. Answering any and all questions with whatever information he had on hand at the time.

He'd done such a good job, he was one of the first people asked to leave...on the current mission.

He's been spreading information just as freely since arriving, so much so he's been spoken to about it several times by the officers on board.

He's thinking about the odd way they'd phrased their last request (a lot of "stops" and "don'ts" and "reading stuff on the infosphere doesn't make you an experts") when he spots a familiar face in the messhall.

He sets his tray down across from Rani.

"Have you been here the whole trip and I just didn't recognize you?" he asks with a bright smile that generally takes the sting out of him forgetting someone's face.

While he waits for an answer, he takes a sip of his Poshkettle tea. Paracountess Black - a savory, smoky brew with a lingering bite.

Oh. Hi Azara. Rani replies, pleased to see a familiar face. Well to be honest, most of the time I was out in the Spitfire flying search and rescues as well as collecting sensor data about the Drift and why it's sooooo ... lumpy. At least that's most of the transitions felt like ... really turbulent. Although there were a few that felt like I, and the ship, were being sphagettified and sucked through a straw.

You got any ideas what happened to the Drift? Some say there was a problem and Triune switched it off and on again in an attempt to fix it ... or maybe they've installed Drift 2.0 and we have to figure out how to adjust our Drift engines to compensate for the new physics, or it is Drift 2.0 and it's buggy as all heck or ... there's some sort of big conspiracy involving the Great Old Ones, the Illuminati and our lizard overlords - no I don't mean the Veskarium, the Other Ones, although ..... *long pause* - or the Azlanti Empire did it whether by accident or design ... or, maybe it was Historia-Prime's final act of revenge.

She sighs. There seems to be as many theories as there are Starfinders.

As a full-fledged medical professional, Charli throws herself into rescue missions that launch from the Master of Stars. Most of the victims she's brought in have as much mental trauma as physical. We'll find a way back to the stars, and reunite you with your family, she reassures one vlaka woman in sign language. I promise. She provides the shattered vlaka tea, a warm blanket and a friendly face as she helps her navigate the social services on the Master of Stars.

A little while later, as the exhausted Charli comes off a double-shift, she sees Azara and Rani chatting in the hall. "Oh, hi! I'm sure you two get this a lot, but I'm a big fan of both your perfomances. My name's Charli and..." Charli blinks and sniffs the air. "That's my tea! I mean... I make the tea you're drinking, Azara! I recognize the smoky aroma. That's Paracountess Black, one of our newest offerings!" She smiles shyly. "I hope you're liking it. Charli is a celebrity because of an early appearance on one of Zo's shows, which helped fuel the expansion of Poshkettle Tea throughout the Pact Worlds.

Yith has been one busy Vesk the past few months. She was sent out into the Vast to help figure out why some drift beacons were having random issues. (Battle for the Beacon) and pandemonium had been let loose upon her return to Absalom.
She helped pick up the pieces but was called for another mission, a very dangerous one dealing with a possible cause for the crisis. She and the rest of her group barely made it out of that one alive. (A Haven for scourged machines.)

(No spoilers in case others have not played those games. Both very fun! But bring your A game for the latter!)

Upon her return from the last mission she was immediately sent to the Master of the Stars for a new one. She came aboard, found a bunk and went in search of food and drink. She sees a familiar face or two in the crowd and heads their way.

Yith is a large female Vesk standing over 7' in armor. Even out of armor she is tall and stout. Her greenish coloration changes to more vibrant blues and then to a dark purple starting just behind her nose to the tip of her tail. In these circumstances she is likely just wearing a simple robe with her holy symbol around her neck.. She also looks tired.

"Rani? Long time no see." She nods to everyone.
She then notices the tea. Oh, perfect. I'll be right back!"

She goes over, selects a few pastries and you hear an exclamation of "Oh! The Wasabe tea! Excellent!"

She returns to the table, finds a seat. "Greetings to those I have not met. My name is Yith, a humble priest of Desna.
She devours a party in one bite and then takes a dainty sip of the tea. He face scrunches up for a second and then she smiles. "Ah, that really opens the sinuses!"

Charli grins at Azara's spontaneous poem. "We totally should talk a sponsorship deal! Let me contact Spoons, my Marketing Intern! He would love this!"

"Nice to meet you, Yith!" Charli follows the group down to the Mess Hall, grabs some food and some of her own Poshkettle Tea. After her double-shift, she goes for a highly spiced and caffeinated Akiton Red.

She glances over to the others. "Hey, isn't that Neroo from Absalom Idol over there, working on her drone? We should go join her!" Charli waves over at Neroo, and telepathically asks in Lashunta:

Hello Neroo! Would you like a little company? Me and my friends would love to join you!

Everyone in the Starfinder Society knows Lieutenant Jerris "Maverick" Sakai. He is unanimously recognized as the best starship pilot in the Starfinder Navy. With a streak of 5 years and counting as the winner of the Top Gun trophy, the award given out to the fleet's best ace, some would say he's a little cocky. If you ask him though he'd just say he's simply the best.

From behind aviator sun glasses he gazes out of a viewport in the mess hall into the vastness of space. His flight suit is covered with patches from the numerous units and tours of duty he has served he has been a part of. He grabs himself a glass of ice water and walks over to the observation lounge that adjoins the mess hall and finds a seat.

No one knows why, but every time you look at him a certain music begins to play from the ship's speakers.

Neroo is a beautiful lashunta with purple hair and a bright smile. Only her strange glossy black eyes could make you uncomfortable, but her attitude and fondness make you quickly forgot them.

Azara leads the caravan of trays and tea cups over to Neroo's table. He sends his fellow Lashunta a traditional Castrovellian greeting via telepathy, his antennae swaying softly, before sitting down.

"You've come back at just the right...or wrong time. But then, nobody joins the Starfinders for the boring parts."

He grins and nods toward Charli. "We were just discussing how much we like the imminent Ms. Poshkettle's teas and what our favorites are."

He leaves that conversational opening available but then catches a glimpse of Maverick.

"Isn't that Jerris Sakai? I've always wanted to meet him. Do you think we could get him to join us?"

"Did someone say a sponsorship deal?" A little ysoki wearing a Poshkettle tea apron and carrying a tea pot joins the group. His whiskers twitch in excitement at seeing so many famous people all in one place, all drinking Poshkettle Tea.

"Gentle Sentients, I'm Spoons, an intern with Poshkettle Tea in the marketing division. It's an honor to meet you all! When you're exhausted and facing a full-blown drift crisis, do you know what will perk you up? Friendship and Poshkettle Tea! It's the civilized drink for uncivilized times!"

The little ysoki runs off to fetch Jerris Sakai. "Mr. Sakai? My boss and her friends over there want to meet you. And offer you more tea!"

Spoons is Charli's hireling, and is rather gregarious. You'll be seeing him a lot!

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

Tea Gamma, tea! you hear a high-pitched voice squeak as a trio of young ysoki suddenly scamper out of nowhere towards you. While they surround Poshkettle, a full grown female ysoki double-times after them from the same direction. You all recognize the woman immediately as Fitch - the head of the Wayfinders and the captain of the ship.

Now now kids, slow down! Fitch yells at the three swarming the server. She looks at Poshkettle and you all for a moment. Hey, any of those types decaf? Kevin in particular may have enough energy for now. You notice behind Fitch that the ysoki is trailed by another crowd of ysoki children, a few carrying some boxes and most sporting grease stains across their fur.

Thanks. And not just for the tea! Fitch says to you with a smile, as she waves you over to a nearby conference room. But for all your help so far. Things're crazy out there - puts a smile on my face to see even our senior agents coming back to chip in in the field.

Now! she says. I hope you don't mind being asked to head out again. We've found another derelict vessel pinged on the scanners. And this one's familiar: the Chronicler, a ship belonging to an anacite called Accordant-Contemplator-16.

They're Triunite clergy, and an ally of ours. Helped us out last year with that whole Data Scourge unpleasantness. And I believe some of you have even met them, if you've played 4-03 or 4-15 with this character Well their ship's reading dead in space out there, so I need you to go to it, find out if Accordant-Contemplator-16 and the crew are all right, and do whatever you can to help. Remember: you’re some of our best agents. I trust you to make good decisions and prove that the Starfinder Society takes care of its friends. Got it?

"Decaf? Of course!" Spoons pulls another tea pot out of his mouth pouch. "Gentle Sentients, when you're brimming with energy and suffering from sensory overload, try Roselight Dream, the gentle tea with notes of fruit, flowers and white tea. Popular with children, it's the ideal bedtime tea!"

He pours glasses of tea for Fitch's brood, each with a bit of added honey.

Even the Wasabi? Rani asks Neroo

Hi Yith Rani smiles. Has Desna given you some insights into the current situation?

After Fitch speaks

Well ... I know I'm under Radazam but, it's always a delight to help out the Wayfinders Rani replies. Besides, I figured you needed all the ships and pilots you can get.

She frowns a bit when Fitch mentions the Chronicler. So, that's why he hasn't been answering my messages. I was hoping he had inside information on the Drift Crash. How soon do you want us out there? It can't be the Spitfire though. She's getting maintenance and might take a while.

She looks down at herself, noticing her the bottom of her bikini briefs are peeking out underneath the T-Shirt. And I suppose I'd better put on some pants. Guess there's no time for a swim after all.

Yeah. I prefer a Pegasus, especially the Spitfire She's a scrappy little ship. Drakes are ..... well they sometimes have the maneuverably of a brick.

She looks over at Maverick. If it is a Drake, you can have it. Besides, I'm curious to see what you can do at the helm. Had a go at the new Azata? They're also cool.

For talks like these I need to speak with the agents privately. So scamper! At this the children run off with glee, a few dropping spare parts and tools by Fitch's feet as they go.

'They', I think, Fitch gently corrects. And no idea if that's the reason, thought it could be. I’m afraid the Chronicler is too far away for us to get a decent scan from our position to tell how long its been out there like that. All we know is that it’s drifting freely in space and seems inoperable. I'll need you to get the details.

Fitch puts a paw to her chin for a moment in thought, then shrugs. We've got some of both types in the bays. Even some Azatas. A lot of Azatas actually. Agents tend to leave those in the docks a lot... Fitch trails off for a second before snapping back to focus. Just take whichever you're most comfortable with. Luck on our side its just some engine trouble and you can gett Accordant-Contemplater-16 and their crew set in a tail's twitch. But still best to be prepared. You know how it is out there: ever since this whole Drift Crisis debacle, some of our teams have run into all kinds of trouble on other rescue missions— scavengers, undead, malfunctioning tech, planar threats. Any number of things could have happened to the Chronicler. Keep your guard up. Well, a bit up. Don’t shoot every little thing that moves, though—it’s just as likely there are people alive on that ship who need our assistance.

Huh! I had no problem with the Stingray when I flew it, but I admit it was more of a straight line run. We didn't get into combat. But yeah, okay

She holds out her hand for Maverick to shake. Besides, I've heard how good you are and if I was to give up the helm to anyone, it would be you ... or Gunnz. It'll be my honour to fly with you and yeah .... prove to me that a Drake is more than a gunship

Anyway, I better get my stuff from the Spitfire ... including some pants.

Oh she says with a cheeky grin. What's the possibility of me having a go at piloting the Master of Stars please ma'am?

Fitch cracks a smile. Ha! You sure you're not one of my kids? Tell you what - once we're full up and heading back to Station, talk to me again. Maybe we can get you some time on the return leg.

Fitch turns to the lashunta. I'm no precog. Look, I know the galaxy is hurting and many folks blame Triune and its followers for the Drift Crisis. Truth is, no one knows what’s going on, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling lies. Long odds AC16's got an inside line either, but their in need so that's where we're going.

Well, you're going. I've got another half-dozen missions to oversee here. Stars' pretty busy as you've seen.

As the Drift Crash has dominated all conversations and news lately, it impossible for you to have not heard speculation and rumor about it. A Culture or Diplomacy check might show just how much you've heard...

You can also purhcase anything you might need from the ship's quartermaster (the Master of Stars is very well stocked) before you launch off.

Azara listens closely to the assignment after watching the chaos that is Fitch's grandkids with amusement. He can never get their names quite right, so he often resorts to calling them "kiddo" or "buddy" or the like when he talks to them.

He isn't even a dabbler when it comes to piloting so he only listens in on that discussion as well.

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

Even busy on missions, the situation's so omnipresent all of you have heard at least the basics. The 'Drift Crisis' is a galaxy-spanning disaster, wherein the Drift suddenly stopped working. Everyone in the Drift at the time was lost—most are presumed to be dead or to have been ejected to a random location in existence. Drift engines have overloaded and ceased functioning. Communications, usually sped by the Drift, have likewise failed. Most people know someone dead, dying, or lost because of the Drift Crisis. The galactic community that the Drift facilitated is in shambles, with each system left isolated. While the Pact Worlds will endure, for many colonies, space stations, and systems, this isolation could be a death sentence.

Refugees are making their way to Absalom Station - either on their own or with help from ships and efforts like the Master of Stars' own. Which is starting to lead to its own knck-on issues. The huge influx to Absalom hasn't yet begun to heavily strain the station’s resources, it’s certain that both supplies and space will soon become scarce. Some citizens of Absalom Station petition to close the station to outsiders, while others look for ways to expand the Station’s capacity.

Whatever in the Hells caused the Drift Crisis no one knows, but every has their own guess. Most citizens of the Pact Worlds have centred their blame quarely on Triune and its clergy. While the Church of Triune is facing harsh words, protests, sanctions, governmental meddling, and widespread demands that they “fix the Drift,” it’s the average Triunite who suffers most. In addition to the doubt and helplessness many Triunites feel, they’re often treated with suspicion, aggression, and violence from their wider communities. With no clear place to vent their anger, many Pact Worlds citizens place their blame on the Triunites nearest to them. It’s said that Triune no longer answers the prayers of even its most devoted clergy.

Meanwhile the Drift is currently functioning intermittently, but that it’s incredibly dangerous; travel times have increased drastically, Drift engines malfunction and break, the denizens of the Drift are behaving violently, and storms and other strange anomalies make even the Drift itself hazardous. During the Crash, starships, creatures, planar matter, and the Drift’s own essence were ejected from the Drift, coming to land in random locations on the Material Plane or the other planes of existence. The effects of these planar collisions and seepages are not yet known. In the weeks since the Drift's initial failure you've heard reports of numerous corporations, governments, and scientists have having turned their attention to either repairing the Drift or finding a new method of affordable faster-than-light travel. So far, there's yet to be any announced breakthroughs though.

You pretty much between you know all there currently is to know! Will launch out later today, asusming no final questions, purchases, or the like (sounds like in the Drake? We are going to be in the lower tier, so a Tier 10 ship)

The Thunderbolt is not your average starship, it's the Starfinder Navy's most advanced version of the Drake. Most of the avionics systems on it are top secret tech. You know it's classified. OK. Thats sounds cool. Just so you know, I got an implant that allows me to stay underwater for nearly twenty five minutes. That's why I'm not doing as many underwater escapes as I used to. Who wants to watch an escape that takes that long. That why I'm on the look out for jobs as an underwater stunt double at the moment ... although my agent was saying I could be inline to play a mermaid in a children's vid show.

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

the two small party members are able to maneuver the large water tank through the Master of Stars' corridors and to the loading dock, where Maverick is already finishing launch prep for the Thunderbolt. With all of the frame's modifications it looks quite formidable, and there is plenty of space for the tank to be installed as Yith, Azara, and Neroo join you suited up and ready to go.

Once cleared, you take off in the Thunderbolt out into space and thrust towards the distant ping of the Chronicler's marked location. Over several hours you close in on the detected craft, while behind you the Master of Stars itself grows more distant as it continues on its own course.

Eventually you close enough to the Chronicler that the first visual scans appear on the Thunderbolt's screens. It is a sleek purple shuttle, of relatively recent make and with visibly high-end systems and engines. It is also clearly damaged: the ship's hull, while intact, bears signs of multiple high-velocity impacts and scorched signs of laser fire.

It currently drifts dead in space, its engines lifeless

DC 20 Computers check:
Scanning the Chronicler shows that it still has operating life support and artificial gravity, but that both its engines and its communication array are not currently functioning. You're also able to pick up life signs aboard: five of them.

Azara misses a chance at some chivalry as he's already aboard the ship when Rani and Charli roll the tank into it. Of course, they don't need his help so it doesn't matter that much.

When they get close to the derelict ship he starts walking around the bridge, checking in at each station while watching their target on the large viewscreen.

A close look reveals that he's not actually paying close attention to any of the other screens. When he gets to a station, he looks at the person manning it, trusting their reactions more than his understanding of what they're doing.

"Keep us to their rear, Maverick. If they cause us problems, that will be where their less armed and without engines we can deal with them as necessary, if necessary.

"Can anyone answer Yith's question before we dock? I'm not too worried about a six to five fight if we have the advantage but I don't want to walk in without expecting it and we'll know something's really wrong if at least one life form isn't an Anacite."

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

You're unable to get a species-level read, but as full non-biological constructs I don't think anacites like Accordant-Contemplator-16 would ping as having active 'life-signs' for this sort of scan. You don't have records of the full crew the Triunite priest typically travels with though, and this ship is large enough it would require a multi-person crew to operate.

The Thunderbolt is able to continue its approach and maneuver towards the rear of the drifting Chronicler, which does not shows any signs of response to your arrival. You are able to notice an airlock entrance to its rear cargo bay that appears undamaged and should offer a good entry point.
