Thunder, still in the hallway of the upper floor, strides three times to get closer to the fight that they hear ringing out.
Seems Thunder is still too far out to be much help this round. If we can they'd been with the group instead, for simplicity's sake they'd electric arc and raise shield.

Azrael's imaginary weapon misses the creature, and she fades into the background.
Gwen smacks it with some fire! The tail's scales subtly shift in color after taking that hit.
Will: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31
Her spell covers the tail in dust, but it doesn't seem to have much effect.
The tail is too savvy for Locke's feint, but he still slashes at it effectively.
Jinlong resists the strange energies of the tail and brings Harumi back from the brink.
Revived, Harumi attacks from the floor, but misses with his attack.
Thunder flashes an electric arc at the creature.

Gwen tries to shift back to make room for Locke, but it throws off her sense of aim and a another bolt of green fire just slams into the bedframe.

"Ah--," Locke starts to say something then closes his mouth. He gives the tail a withering glower. "Can you see me through there? You seem to have rather good aim for having your head buried."
He thrusts and slashes at the tail, trying to cut the kobold free.

GM MattMorris |

Locke's sword blade slices into the tail!
The mysterious creature looses its hold on the professor and it plunges through what looks like a purple rip in the floor, making a sound like water quickly draining out of the tub. The rift disappears along with the tail.
The professor still doesn't stir on the bed, and the children are peaking in curiously.
"Hello? How's it going in there?" Vim asks, curiously.
Out of initiative. You still seem to be in a different phase of reality. Locke, take a hero point.

![]() |

"Meeeek!" Jinlong squeaks as the tail wraps around him. He breathes a sigh of relief when Locke slices it in half.
"My thanks smoothscale. Is anyone else hurting?"
If we have time, Jinlong will attempt a treat wounds on Harumi, just to get rid of the wounded condition

Realizing he's injured, Jinlong calls upon Abadar for healing.

"What's a foci?" Vim wonders aloud.
"The plural of 'focus,' I believe," Hari states confidently. "Do you need us all to focus? On what?"

![]() |

"That went about as well as expected," Locke murmurs mostly to himself. "Let's search the room here. Maybe there's a clue as to where these foci go that will give us a clue to what they are. Or at least their shape."
Locke begins with a visual inspection of the room.

GM MattMorris |

Inspection of the room reveals nothing beyond what you have already noticed. IF you try to rouse the professor, your hands pass right through him.
Looking at the room for long is disorienting: Shimmering images of the bed dance across the floor, loose papers float through the air in slow processions, and the walls ripple like a pond’s surface each time someone in the room takes a step. The pile of the carpet grows six inches deep in the course of a second, and then subsides back to normal.

![]() |

Gwen taps her finger on her lips in thought. "It would seem that the Professor is in a different phase as well. He doesn't seem much worse for wear though. Hopefully getting rid of that beast will help him recover and help us."
"We still need to know what the focuses...foci are." She gasps, suddenly. "What if they are what the students were learning about? That Taldan artifact, perhaps? And the cinnamon too!"

![]() |

"Focus usually well crafted trinket. Search rooms," Locke writes to the students.
To his companions, however, he says, "Where have we not been? Some of the rooms downstairs? And if the owlbear is a focus, we may be stuck in this phase forever."

![]() |

Thunder shakes their head over the students not understanding what 'foci' means trying to hide their own lack of comprehension as well. They plop down on the floor and try examining it for a good place to put said 'foci' once the group finds them.
+8 perception to Search
"Well, need ta find said folk-eye first. Let's check downstairs and then worry about not finding any."

![]() |

Jinlong also begins looking, though he doesn't really know what a foci is.
+8 Perception as well

GM MattMorris |

There are two rooms downstairs that you haven't been in yet, if you want to explore.

GM MattMorris |

Floating through the door to the room, Azrael finds that weapon and shield racks and suits of armor on display stands line the walls of this well-stocked armory. Several weapons and shields are laid out on the table, along with whetstones and oil clothes.

GM MattMorris |

Everything in the room reacts as you would expect at this point, and there doesn't seem to be anything odd or hidden.

![]() |

Gwen follows Azrael into the armory, running her hands through the racks of weapons. "Boring..."
She exits the room and heads back to another unexplored area. "Let's see what's in here."
Last room on the top part of the slide. I don't see where a door is, but there has to be one, right?

Esoteric Lore?: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
Harumi closes her eyes and tries to sense any curses, haunts, or other weird things her spiritual senses can detect
If Esoteric Lore doesn't work, Arcana and occultism are 3 less, and nature/religion are 2 less

GM MattMorris |

Gwen follows Azrael into the armory, running her hands through the racks of weapons. "Boring..."
She exits the room and heads back to another unexplored area. "Let's see what's in here."
Last room on the top part of the slide. I don't see where a door is, but there has to be one, right?
That is the Restricted section of the library. You can enter it through the locked door in the library. Let me know if you want to!"
Harumi doesn't sense anything that she wasn't already aware of.

![]() |

Gwen rolls her eyes at Locke. She waves her hands and her green eye flashes bright for a moment as she looks around.
Detect magic
If she finds nothing, let's go to the restricted section. Sounds like it could have foci.

GM MattMorris |

The restricted section of the library is surprisingly dull. Most of the room is taken up with files and reports. A quick glance shows that many concern Galtan Pathfinder agents and former Galtan nobility. Nothing in the room detects as magical.

![]() |

Locke scrunches up his face. "If we've truly been everywhere, we're just going to need to start from scratch. Or get the students to carry an owlbear up the stairs," he says glumly.

GM MattMorris |

Like the rest of the building, the conference room is deserted. Sheets of notes on the table detail efforts by the staff at the Woodsedge Lodge to stabilize the Maze of the Open Road after recent incidents during which the Maze unexpectedly connected to strange destinations.
After deliberation and research, the staff asked arcanists from the Grand Lodge to concoct a complex ritual that would reconnect the lodge and its surroundings to the Material Plane in case of emergency. To trigger the Material Failsafe ritual, staff members would simply need to activate three focus items near the site of the disturbance: a jug of pure water, a steel shield, and a large lodestone. According to the notes, Wenture‑Captain Armeline Jirneau trained all staff members in the activation procedure and gave them a handout to refer to in an emergency.

![]() |

"A lodestone? Where can we find such a thing?" Jinlong wonders aloud.

![]() |

Harumi scratches her chin.
"Pretty sure I could fake a loadstone if a creature needed to be hit by one, but for a ritual I'm going to assume we need the real thing. 'Cmon, let's see if the children can figure out where to find these."
See if we can't communicate with the children what we need.

GM MattMorris |

Hari grabs a pitcher of water from the kitchen, and after some quick instruction Vim and Tels bring a steel shield from the armory.
As to the lodestone, you seem to recall seeing one upstairs.

![]() |

"There was a lodestone in the Venture Captain's quarters," Locke says. "...not to mention the note written on the margins of the emergency instructions say that's where it is."

![]() |

Gwen brushes hair out of her eyes. "Right. So let's take these upstairs to the Captain's quarters and start there." She uses her Faerie Dust to tell the students to bring the shield and pitcher to the VC's room.

![]() |

"Now we need three of you to hold one focus each and speak the word N A R V E N together three times," Locke painfully scribbles out on the flour spread over the floor. He grimaces as he imagines what sorts of mishaps might ensue.

![]() |

Jinlong picks up the lodestone and does as Locke suggests.
"narven narven narven"
He involuntarily cringes, wondering if something painful is about to happen.

GM MattMorris |

Without the strange tail to interfere, the children are easily able to follow your directions. Each time the speak the activation word, a wave of normalcy washes across the room. First, the papers fall from the air, second, the carpet begins to behave itself, and finally the kids all gasp with delight: "Chaperones, you're back!" Vim exclaims.
As the students are greeting your (and peppering you with questions), Thandmere stirs on the bed. "What's that?! Oh, dear. My, my." The aging dwarf slides unsteadily to his feet and holds out a hand to you for support.
"Well, I suppose I should have anticipated something like this," he grumbles. "Please, accompany me to the great hall and I'll explain things as best I can."
When you arrive at the hall, you find the remaining children chatting with the staff of the Woodsedge Lodge, many of whom are wearing white masks.
Venture-Captain Armeline Jirneau greets you enthusiasticly, and informs you and the visiting students that she was able to observe all of you the whole time from the phase of reality that she was trapped in. She commends the students (and their chaperones) for resolving the issue and gives extra kudos to Geltra, Hari, Tels, and Vim. (She gives Alec a stern Look.)
Thandmere abashedly explains that he had made a deal with "an exciting entity!" to try to liven up his teaching, but realized that he had gotten more than he bargained for when the pelagastr protean he had made the deal with fractured reality around Woodsedge Lodge.
After its magic overwhelmed him, the protean kept him unconscious so it could experience the chaos that it had caused. Thandmere senses that activating the Material Failsafe has shunted the creature back to the Maelstrom, and he, "Doesn’t think it will be much of a problem in the future—returning to pester the Society wouldn’t be much of a new experience, after all."
After making sure everyone is safe, Venture-Captain Jirneau quickly packs you all off to the Maze of the Open Road, "before anything too interesting happens."
The Maze of the Open Road transports everyone safely. When they arrive back at the Grand Lodge, J Dacilane is waiting expectantly for you: "Well," he asks, "How did the trip go?"

![]() |

Gwen gives a dazzling smile to J and laughs. "Oh, your students were wonderful! They completed all their lessons and even helped us around the lodge!" She glances over to the students and gives them a wink.

![]() |

"It was an experience for both students and chaperones to be sure," Locke says. "Did they complete all of their lessons?"
He shrugs and waves his hand. "No matter." He then leans in toward J and says at not entirely a whisper and with a nod toward Alec, "You'd best keep an eye on that one."

GM MattMorris |

"All assignments complete? Very well done!" J congratuates you and the students. "Please, we're going to have a little celebration at the Academy next Moonday. Won't you join us?"
At the party, the students present you with a gift basket full of thank you notes and small gifts. Professor Thandmere Krelson presses signed copies of one of the Pathfinder Chronicles on you. The chronicle deals with Pathfinder Society expeditions in the Five Kings Mountains. He tells you that he, "wrote an appendix for it."
That's the end! You were completely successful. Hopefully you enjoyed it.

![]() |

Jinlong looks a bit shell-shocked at what just happened. "The hatchlings were delightful and we were able to keep them safe. But I'm not entirely sure what really happened."
Nevertheless, Jinlong does attend the celebration at the Academy, after stopping by the coffee stand of a gnome of his acquaintance. He spends his time at the Academy cooing at Ruffles.
