Thelma grins at Lanni. "Only one place to drink in this blasted place, 'n folk ain't quick to wreck it. But when crews comin' through get rowdy, got my boys to see 'em out on their arses." She nodded towards two rather permanent fixtures of the place, who you hadn't seen taking a shift working on the boat.

Royce and Hadrian were business partners, Lanni had learned, when recruiting new crew. Their business was a vague one, but given they were all pirates, it wasn't unusual for folks to keep their cards close to their chest. It seemed their latest venture was acting as bouncers for a tavern that rarely needed the muscle.

I have blatantly stolen two of my favorite fictional characters, and I apologize for nothing XD

Lanni looks over to the two people indicated. "Nice. I'm not trying to start trouble - at least, not right now. Just looking for where trouble has happened before. Thanks." He waves and heads out into the street right outside the door of the tavern. There he sets up a place to conduct his morning spirit attunement.

The next day, Mateo came down in what could only be considered a crime against all things fashionable; his leather boots washed off, the black fishnet shirt clinging to his lithe and muscular form where it was visible underneath the finely made leather armor. The cape was sadly missing, the magical one he had found having been collected by Syl and washed off to show black and red of Cheliax. The crocodile-skin belt was tied off on his form, the massive brass buckle polished to a gleem. The leather skirt was improvised with cut slits to allow his shapely, thick thighs the space to maneuver. The dragon earcuff, made of black marble and brass metal, was affectionately placed on his ear opposite of the finely made eyepatch he wore. The orange knee-high socks stuck out just barely above his boots, though it seemed that he had "borrowed garters and had them connected. He came downstairs brimming with confidence and a devilish smile that was just a bit too wide.

The smile didn't promise violence to his crewmates, not even slightly. No, what it showcased was a man that was eager for someone to f$#$ around and find out. It was an outfit that practically called for someone to pick a fight with him. Mateo knew the rules; he couldn't murder someone for no reason. If they picked a rough fight, he would give it happily.

He would step up to the table, putting a leg up on the table and showcasing the hairless yet fantastically sculpted leg for all to see. He looked over his comrades for a moment as he grabbed a piece of cheese and bit down eagerly into the savory meal.

"Mmm, good choices. I feel far less hot...well...no. I feel like I'm not burning up as much." He said with a wink, throwing back a drink before nodding to the others before he shouldered his backpack. "C'mon, lets meet with Lanni."

The dangerous man leaned against the tavern wall, quietly humming songs as Lanni led his strange seance. There was an air of violence and blood in the air, one that called him towards savagery.

Lanni sees Mateo coming over wearing most of the outfit he picked out. "Looking awesome, Mateo. I knew if anyone could pull that off, it would be you."

A girl of about twelve winters, who helped Thelma serve the food, walked into the room and saw Mateo's attire, his leg propped up on the table. She burst out laughing, the kind of laughing that breaks a person, that brings tears to the eyes and hurts your gut after a while. The kind that's normally contagious, but most of those present knew enough of Mateo, or had read his expression well enough, that none of them joined in, eyes on their breakfasts.

Mateo froze when he heard the laugh burst through the room, his body tensing for just a moment. The grin upon his face grew a little wider now as he turned towards the source of the laughter. The merry intent of death was in his eyes until he came across the sight of the young girl. He stared for a moment, his smile faltering just a little bit, and the hand on the hilt of his blade stopped.

He strut over towards her, his hat hiding his face in a veil of shadows as he approached. The tension in the air thickened as he stood before her. No words were said as that crisp blue eyes stared down at the girl for a moment that was just a few seconds longer than comfortable.

Mateo had a presence about him, one that didn't need threatening words to be said. It was in the air around him, a stillness like a sneak ready to bite and ensnare its meal. He would reach out, a finger underneath her chin, to lift her head as he quirked his own to the side. The menacing smile remained even as he looked her over.

"I do look pretty ridiculous, don't I?" Mateo asked in a low voice. "You...are braver than most and for such a young age. I respect that. What is your name, girl?"

She kept laughing as he walked over, eyes squeezed shut in laughter, until she felt his presence hovering over her. The laugh trailed off gradually, as she realized for the first time no one else was joining in, and she slowly looked upward, with a "Hahaha...haha..ha...huh..." ending in a pronounced gulp.

Still, she kept a grin of hopeful, feigned-innocence plastered on her face. It was an expression that said, "I can see you're upset but surely we can settle this peacefully?"

Her nerves make her chuckle a little in spite of herself. "You really do, mister. Sorry to say it, but I ain't never seen anything so funny in all my days." She wiped away a tear of mirth from the corner of her eye. "Cricket, sir. On account of I almost never shut my trap and my chirping grates on everyone's nerves." It was clear she was quoting someone, or possibly multiple someones.

"Mmmm...Cricket is it? A fitting name. Shame for the reason." She kept this smile upon her face, one saying "excuse me please? I'm not responsible for my mistakes.". He remained close to her before taking off his hat and placing it on the nearby table, throwing his long hair over his shoulder. "You remind me of myself. Can I show you something?"

"See, in Cheliax, slavery is quite legal. Halflings being the targets of choice. Easy to intimidate, easy to control. When I was a boy your age, there was a known slave hunter by the name of Jasper Silvereyes. A real dangerous sort, colder than death itself. I met him." Mateo begins to narrate, smiling as if remembering a treasured memory. "He was a halfling! A halfling that hunted his own! A real son of a b*&#%. He didn't stand any taller than you, a short little man carrying himself like death despite the fuzzy toes and chubby cheek. It was ridiculous and like you, I couldn't help but laugh. I laughed hard, I cried, even as he tried to intimidate me..."

Mateo would reach up and lifted his eyepatch, revealing the ruined skin underneath. The scar of a blade stared underneath his eye and slipped upwards and deep. The flesh was gnarled and dark, his orbital cavity empty. The scar resumed along the top, exposing the skull underneath before ripping through his eyebrow. If she turned to look away, the gentle hand that had lifted her chin would tighten to hold her gaze.

"He cut me so fast that he took my eye right through my eyelids. I screamed and writhed but no one helped me. Blood-covered, I was taken by the guards and thrown into a cell before I could reach Calistria's temple. By the time my parents collected me, the damage was too much." The smile had remained on Mateo's face as he spoke but there was an intensity in his remaining eye, one that bored through her. "So heed my lesson...because even a cricket knowns when to be quiet. If you're not one of the most dangerous people in the room, figure out who is." He would release her and recover his eyepatch before putting his hat back upon his head.

"I believe I saw you speaking to Captain Lanni a few days ago. You're joining our crew, right?" Mateo said with a pat on her shoulder. "I am Officer Mateo Nikas. I'm here for your morale...and I decide who joins me in the front for boarding. Be seeing you, Cricket." The man would turn away from the girl, tipping his hat towards the other with a mischievous smile on his face. Not surprising, his bottom looked marvelous in the skirt.

As Mateo begun to tell his tale, Cricket leaned forward, listening with rapt attention. She grinned as he compared himself to her, and his laughing at the halfling.

When he revealed his gruesome socket she paled, but also appeared fascinated, not trying to look away, not blinking. She examined it with unadulterated curiosity.

"Think I just did, sir." She rubbed her chin when he let go. "Whatever happened to the halfling? He still in business? Or did you get him back, once you'd grown up some?" She grinned, because she was pretty sure it was the latter.

"You bet I am! I don't know what my 'morale' is, but I'll make sure you want me up front, sir," she said proudly, misunderstanding his implication.

When he turned she almost laughed again. But managed to restrain it to a smile, hidden behind her hand, which she clamped over her mouth.

Atia looks up from her breakfast just in time for Mateo to prop a leg up on their table, putting himself on quite the display for the entire taproom to see. Especially Atia, who happened to be at just the right angle to see up his skirt. The wizard chokes on the pastry she's eating and averts her gaze quickly, lightly tanned skin flushing bright red. She tries to cover the reaction by taking a huge drink of her tea...

Des shrugged and replied. "I'm more used to it to be honest... even when I'd rather not have to deal with that kind of showboating," she frowned slightly. Atia continues to look confused, brows furrowing at Destinie's commentary. She wasn't bothered by Mateo's display, although the sight of his surprisingly smooth legs and backside were...unexpected. She had been sheltered most of her life, but it has been some time on the ships, exposed to death and chaos and all manner of indecency. She broke into a bemused smile, taking a last drink of her hot tea. "Oh, Destinie, it's fine. I'm a bit desensitized at this point. Cheliax wasn't an innocent place, and we've been at this for a while. And I would never ask Mateo to do such a thing. It would only make him double down."

After any more discussion, (and Joran chiming in when he can :P), Atia would rise and head out with the rest of the crew, ready to chase down the root of the problem with the naga.

You all set out after breakfast, geared up for a jaunt through the jungle, following the river upstream. You can see the river channel is much wider than the pitiful stream that now occupies it. The leaves are brown and wilting, and the stink of rotting vegetation assails your nostrils as all the duckweed and water plants left to rot.

It's an easy trek, at least. The hard, mud-cracked ground is easy to walk on, and the jungle trees had not yet reclaimed the dry riverbed. After your last experience on land -- with ghouls, awhecks, and grindylows galore -- you were all alert for potential dangers. But hours passed, and nothing came forth to assail you. The walk was actually pleasant, if a bit too hot. The open air of the riverbed allowed a breeze, and the sounds of tropical birds followed you.

As you come around a bend, your casual stroll comes to a sudden halt.

In the middle of the riverbed ahead of you, drinking from the sad, narrow stream of water, is a small herd of enormous reptiles. Five adults and two babies are milling about, their club-like tails idly swaying as they enjoying a refreshing drink.

Mateo happily walked with his comrades along the riverbed, enjoying the stroll through the jungle. There was less insects and even though the stench of decay lingered here, there was not that scent of unnatural rot lingering through it either. The sun beat down on him but his hat helped protect his pale skin. When they came around the bend, his eyes widened to see the majestic beasts there drinking from the water. He had never seen such a creature before. He had never killed such a creature before.

With Lanni's question though, the swashbuckler deflates a little. Caution was acceptable but how often would they have the chance to slay such a beast. He settles down but anyone watching can see the hopefulness in his eyes as he watches and listens for trouble.

I imagine the creatures are fairly peaceful and we can see them. I'm keeping an ear and eye out for predators that may be after the young ones.

Atia walks along beside Joran, a sour look on her face. Picking through the mud and decay on a good day was not her idea of a good time--it was even less so with drought and overbearing heat. She gleamed with sweat, hair sticking to her face despite her attempts to pile it on top of her head. "I'm this close to cutting all my hair off," She mutters to herself moodily. Asmodeus sails above them, not so much as a scout, but to give Atia a break from his claws digging into her shoulder and his squawking.

She pauses when they approach the large creatures, raising an eyebrow, sifting through her mental cache of knowledge for what these things might be.

It was certainly a new experience to her. She balked as she stepped back a couple steps... but hesitated when it seemed like they weren't going to attack back. "It's honestly refreshing finding another creature that doesn't want to kill us on sight," she replied, visibly relieved.

Atia recognized the creatures from a book she’d adored as a child. They were called dinosaurs. They were common in the Mwangi Expanse, so it was little wonder they’d be in the Shackles as well, bordering that region.

She recalled these were called ankylosauruses, and they were very heavily armored, with a bony tail club that could smash predators. They were also very, very stupid, brains so small they tended to act by instinct. If the group of you approached, they would likely go into protective mode and it would start a fight.

As if Destinie’s words were prophetic, Mateo’s whole body tensed with anticipation as he felt, more than heard, a faint vibration in the ground. A huge, two-legged, sharp-toothed dinosaur burst out of the foliage and charged across the riverbed towards the herd. Atia recognized it, too – an allosaurus, the lion of the dinosaur world. Thirty feet long, and twice Joran’s height, it was not the largest predatory reptile but it was a dangerous foe nonetheless.

The ankylosaurus made low, rumbling, grunt-like sounds, running much more slowly for the opposite bank, the young ones struggling to keep up. One adult hung back, turning its side to the oncoming threat, swinging its club through the air with enough power to create a whooshing sound as the predator charged.

The ground shook underneath him and Mateo would begin to grin wider now. A massive beast erupted from the treeline, crashing out towards its prey. The smaller ones fled but one stayed behind to fight, swinging that mace-like tail through the air with destructive force. The allosaurus was undeterred, breaking through and biting down onto its prey with terrible force.

"How beautiful..." Mateo whispered, crouching down to watch the hunter hunt. How often did someone have the chance to see nature in action while not dealing with its predations? He hears Lanni and looks over, the dangerous smile plastered to his face.

"It'd be an amazing battle, no doubt. Instinct versus talent, man versus beast. An ageless battle." Mateo said with a sigh, standing up and brushing himself off. "But we're onto better things, yes? I don't have to kill it...but I'd like to..."

Instead of us getting involved and hurt possibly killed in a senseless fight.

Seadreamer looks for a route that will take the party by the fight, without detouring to far.

It was with a heavy heart that Destinie decides to leave the scene. As much as she would like to change the outcome, she figured that was simply the facts of life. It's usually best not to interfere in such things.

Having never seen a dinosaur in his life, Joran is shocked at the sight of the one attacking the other. Joran looks around at everyone as they speak. If it kills that one, it'll kill the whole family! I can't stand by and do nothing! He looks down at Atia and thinks solemnly, I'm sorry, Atia, I just can't. Knowing the world of trouble he'll be in, presuming he survives, from Atia with what he's about to do, Joran wisely remains mum.

A nasty glare forms upon the warrior as he cuts his focus to the Allosaurus. Unable to control his anger at the sight, Joran doesn't hesitate and explodes right toward it, drawing his greatsword as he does, and raises it high before bringing it down mightily toward the dinosaur.

As Joran does his best to decapitate a dinosaur, Lanni shakes his head and grins over at Mateo. "Or we could go with plan B."

Holding actions for the moment until I see what the result of that attack is.

Joran charged the allosaurus, chopping into its leg with his greatsword, the blow so powerful he felt his blade strike bone and heard the massive predator screech in pain, a high pitched, grating sound.

Map on Roll20 now, Joran's strike was over half its HP... but very much got its attention. <3 There's not actually a road here, was just the best map I could find for a mostly dried up riverbed.

Mateo was ready to leave, sullen almost at the fact that the carnage couldn't even be witnessed. Nature was having its way before their very eye. Yet what Seadreamer and the others had suggested was reasonable; they didn't need to fight.

And then Joran charged it.

Mateo watched the man leap into the fray with his greatsword in hand, aiming to nearly cleave the animal apart. His shocked expression turned into one of excitement, his grin growing wider and wider.

"YES!" Mateo shouted, drawing shield and rapier as he rushed into combat to strike against the monstrous thing. He rushed up as it turned to see what was happening, his smile wild and mad. He never had a chance to kill something so big before.

He swept low and ducked underneath a claw, assuming his defensive position before taking a mighty lunge at the allosaurus. While he was excited for the fight, he had no interest in becoming a preliminary meal.

Des sighed, though it was far less exasperated then her usual ones. A part of her still wanted to do something to help the scaly giant. Sure it was from the usual suspects, but it was a more welcome surprise than most.

Thus, her expression was more reserved when her eyes went white while she spoke a prayer to create a spell to help the group.

Casting Bless.

I know Terry is busy Santa-ing, so I'll scoot past his turn -- I think you guys will be fine with 6 and he can jump in at any point if he does find time to post <3

Des embraces her powers and asked a boon of whatever entity granted them, wrapping her companions in a swath of holy magic that made them feel certain of themselves, sure to win.

Mateo rushed at the beast, feeling the thrill course through him. This creature could swallow him in a single bite. It was a powerful, dangerous foe to test himself against. Unfortunately, it was also a foreign one. It looked reptilian, and he'd expected it to move like one, but the thing seemed to hop away from his attack, almost like a bird. His attacks missed, but he intended to do better, now that he knew what he was up against.

Lanni, on the other hand, shot a bolt right up the thing's nose. It made another scratchy, high pitched, trumpet of pain and rage, jaw snapping open and closed, little arms too short to deal with the sudden painful thorn in its face.

Atia remembered the naga fight all too well and immediately shielded herself. She had no interest in another creature biting her, especially one with teeth the size of her hand.

Dreamer fires a shot at the thing, hoping to keep some distance and leave tanking the thing to the lunatics that charged the beast. His bad luck holds, though, and he's vaguely glad that Moiyra woman wasn't around to see another miss. He was beginning to think Harrigan had a witch aboard and there was some voodoo doll of him lying around somewhere, cursed to never succeed at an attack again. Maybe if they ever got somewhere civilized he'd see a priest about lifting the damnable hex.

The ankylosaurus, bleeding heavily, swipes its tail at the predator. It connects with a loud CRACK the allosaurus screeching again, limping now, its femur fractured. Even if it could escape this battle, it was doomed -- a predator that couldn't run would starve.

damage: 2d6 + 8 ⇒ (1, 1) + 8 = 10

Atia watched with dismay as the thing bit down on Joran, clamping down, huge teeth puncturing him through his armor. It lifted him in the air, preparing to toss its head back and eat him. Mechanically, he's just grappled, just adding flavor.

You're all up.

Thanks to being burdened by a barbarian halfway in its mouth, Dreamer was finally able to connect with his attack, and Lanni managed it without the additional aid from his life-impaired friend.

Atia fired a ray of flames, burning the creature, unable to see how badly hurt Joran was and worrying the thing had bitten him in half.

Mateo could tell the thing was almost dead, and part of him bemoaned the fact it would be over so soon, but there was still pleasure to be had in ending the thing himself. He ducked the tail, then leapt up, using the creature's own knee to boost him, and he stabbed the full length of his rapier into its ribcage before leaping back out of the way.

The allosaurus fell, and fell hard, the rapier having pierced its heart. Joran tumbled out of it's mouth, landing on his ass, the top half of his body covered in spittle and his hair gooey with it. Des hurried over to heal him, though his wounds had not been dire.

The ankylosaurus, having been focused solely on the thing trying to eat it, did not attack you. Once the predator fell, it hurried off to catch the herd. It was hurt badly, but if the wound did not fester, it would likely live, a number of scars upon its back to tell the tale.

Mateo leaps up and stabs it between the beast's ribs, striking clearly into its heart. He watches as it stumbles a step before. It hits the ground hard and the swashbuckler stands back for a moment before stepping closer towards this beast. It laid on the ground, breathing hard, and the man would move closer but above the danger of its snapping jaws.

"There there, you did well. You didn't expect this fight." Mateo muttered softly down to it, running a hand along its head. "Go ahead. Time to move on." The beast shuddered and then went still, the swashbuckler would stand up and brush himself off. He watched the other dinosaur rush off to join its herd, his smile still on his face before he gave a shrug.

"Heroes? Eh, debatable. This beast is just a predator, much like us. It could've been hunting for its family, now doomed to starve. Heroes are entirely based on perspective." Mateo would mutter, taking out his dagger. He dug at the beast's jawline, taking out four of its teeth; the biggest ones and the smallest ones.

"We ready to go? The Nagas aren't going to kill themselves...hopefully."
