Before the final fingers of flame abate, Corelion charges the air between the two creatures:
Red REF: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
Yellow REF: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
Though both seem to be pretty quick!
Jraal's pick attack is utterly brutual. The mephit bursts into a quickly dissipating ball of sparks and flame.
Evindal misses with his bomb, but the splash is enough to wound the mephit, who darkens a bit in the cold.
Mimi puts on a show of derring-do! On the other side of the mephit she plunges her rapier into the creature. It screams in crackling agony, though it doesn't turn to ash quite yet.
Despite a powerful showing and a downed enemy, the flames still burn:
Jraal: Persistent Fire: 1d4 ⇒ 1 Flat: 1d20 ⇒ 14
Evindal: Persistent Fire: 1d4 ⇒ 2 Flat: 1d20 ⇒ 2
Mimi: Persistent Fire: 1d4 ⇒ 2 Flat: 1d20 ⇒ 16
And two continue to burn while Mimi's acrobatics seem to have snuffed the flame.
Out of combat, sort of. Two of you are still on fire.
Evindal Mog
|
GM, do we get the persistent fire even if we made our initial basic Ref save? Evindal had a success and a crit success on the two initial attacks. Also, are there any skill actions we can attempt to put out the fire or are we just at the mercy of the flat checks?
Jraal
|
Jraal drops his weapon and dives into the water (I'll assume that puts out the fire)
"Ahhh... come on in. The water is refreshing.". A smile creeps across his face as he starts dog paddling around and dives underneath the docks.
Evindal Mog
|
Ah, good point! I forgot we are at the docks... oops. GM, can I jump in the water without messing up Evindal's bombs and other alchemical gear?
Voron Keyphyra
|
Reflex, DC17 (Red 3): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7 Sigh, double damage
Reflex, DC17 (Yellow 6): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12 full damage
Voron takes the brunt of the flames directly. The wizard begins panicking quite audibly and, throwing his pack to the ground, jumps off of the dock and into the nearby waters.
He moans pitifully at the pain of the burns on his skin, and slowly hoists himself up onto to the dock. His eyes are mostly shut from the burning.
Aaaaarg. Are they gone?
He rolls over flat on his back and doesn't move for some time.
| Dungeon Master S - 2e |
It does look like a successful save still means persistent, but as mentioned, you are at the docks.
The party takes a moment to stop, drop, roll, and swim to put out the fire, but a major problem still remains. Looking around the others in the area are just about done putting out the fires which DON'T fight back.
With the fire under control, Harbormaster Molnesh approaches you. She is distraught at the sudden loss of several members of her team, and at first she believes the crew of the Sixwing Drake perished as well—then she corrects herself, vigorously shaking her head as if to clear her mind of unpleasantness. "Wait... Wait I remembers the ship’s crew seemed unfamiliar to me, which was odd, because I have known Captain Zendrani—the ship’s captain and a veteran Pathfinder—for many years. The crew rapidly disembarked and vanished into the city. Then... Wait... then... before I could determine what was going on, there was a pale-skinned man who arrived from the city and somehow convinced me that his companions should be allowed to take the shipment and leave several barrels behind in its place."
She stops and thinks how weird this all sounds now. "They hid their features under dark hoods, and I remember so some stupid reason thinking this was a perfectly normal idea, despite how foolish it sounds now. Look, whatever happened, you saved the day. Here take this as a show of thanks. Something tells me you're going to need it." She tosses a bag with a full 15 gold coins in it to you.
Jraal
|
Jraal, soaking wet from his swim, looks at the Harbormaster. "Sounds like they affected your mind and your memories.". He shudders, hugging himself. "The most evil of all magics - loss of free will. The Waybringer is not happy."
Feeling a bit out of his league, Jraal frowns. "Can you tell us anything more about these men? Hoe many of them were there? Do you remember?"
Mimi de Valence
|
Oops. I didn't notice the persistent fire damage. Good to see that Mimi came out of it without having to jump into the harbor :)
While Mimi successfully extinguishes her burning clothes with a few effectively applied slaps of her hat, she is a little surprised to watch her companions throw themselves into the harbor to achieve the same effect. "I sincerely hope they know how to swim."
Once everyone pulls themselves together, they once again meet up with the harbormaster to hear her story. Accepting the harbormasters bag of gold ("Bah, eet vas our plaisir, but merci all de same"), Mimi repeats back her understanding of the situation to make sure she has it right.
"So a pâle-skinned man vith 'ees band of dark 'ooded servants came onto de docks and after magiclee enchanteeng you, took our shipment of relics avey vith dem. Dey left behind barrels of explosives, and vonce clear of de docks, caused de barrels to explode and de mephits to appear. All dees vas presumablee een un effort to cover up deir subterfuge. Veree clever of dem."
Assuming the harbormaster essentially agrees with her summation...
Mimi turns to her fellow Pathfinders. "Ve must track down dees pâle-skinned man and 'ees gang and retreeve our relics. Shall ve ask around to see if anyone saw vhere dey vent?"
Exploration Activity: Gather Information (Diplomacy): +7 - secret
| Dungeon Master S - 2e |
Clearly frustrated, the harbormaster can't Jraal's questions.
Just as Mimi is about to suggest canvassing the area, one of the surviving dockhands, a young Taldan man with light skin and dirty brown hair named Dorneliun, steps forward, wiping his sooty hands on a rag. "Excuse me m'lords and ladies. I arrived just in time to help fight the fire. I confess that I hid when the strangers came to take the shipment, avoiding whatever “foul magic” they used on the rest of the dockhands. I saw them doing weird stuff to the others before me. I tried to speak with Molnesh at the time, but she didn't seem to have a clue about anything." To this she gives a frustrated harumphf.
"I followed them all the way to an abandoned tavern in the Puddles district and waited a while, but I chickened out at the thought of going inside."
Check: 5d20 ⇒ (9, 19, 13, 4, 13) = 58

Mimi turns to the new arrival and listens to his story. "Dat vas rapide theenkeeng of you, Dornelium, and merci for comeeng forward. You doubtless saved us a lot of time. Now if you vould inform us of exactlee vhere een de Puddles dees abandoned taverne can be found, ve vill go and see eet for ourselves."
| Dungeon Master S - 2e |
"Well... umm.... I can't handle myself like you can. You're not going to make me GO are you? You can just take an address?"
Mimi de Valence
|
Mimi chuckles lightly at the young Taldan's response. "You are of corse velcome to join us if you like. But if you préfère not to, den, I believe dat un adresse and perhaps some simple instructions vill suffice."
Evindal Mog
|
I think several of us also have some damage? Do we have anyone with Medical talents? I also have a Hireling who can roll Medicine +4 but hopefully someone is better than that.
Evindal wipes his face with a towel and tries to be sure that all his alchemical gear has survived the dunking without any significant mishap.
Voron Keyphyra
|
Voron wraps himself with a spare cloth to dry off quickly but is still dripping wet when Dornelium approaches.
He nods along with Mimi's encouragement of his actions.
You could also join us but stay outside of the building. If something were to happen to us, you could run to get help.
He gives the young Taldan the location of the Grand Lodge and a description of Ambrus Valsin and Rain.
And don't worry, you'll know if we're in trouble.
| Dungeon Master S - 2e |
"Okay. I can show you how to get there, but that's it. There's a reason I'm not a Pathfinder!" Dorneliun looks at everyone's wounds and shakes his head. He's clearly not cut out for adventuring.
Will let you handle healing before moving.
Voron Keyphyra
|
But could you stay outside while we are in there? We would greatly appreciate our superiors knowing if things go wrong. In our line of work... you never know.
While he awaits an answer he finishes drying off and retrieves his healers tools.
Okay! Line up those ouchies! I think we've got a lot of burns to sooth...

Jraal

Jraal shrugs as Voron tries to treat his burn scars. "Ahh, it's okay Voron. The Waybringer will protect me.". He closes his eyes and says a small prayer to Apsu.
Mimi de Valence
|
Under Voron's medical ministrations, Mimi's scorched skin goes from angry-looking blisters to bright pinkish splotches before finally returning to its normal healthy skin tone. "Un excellente job, Voron. You 'ave my gratitude."
Mimi sees that Voron did not have as much luck treating the others. "Perhaps now dat you 'ave de 'ang of eet Voron, you can try again in, say, an 'alf-'our. Dat should give us time to return to de Grand Lodge and give de Venture-Capitaine and update on de situation before ve 'ead into de Puddles."

The wizard winces, slightly embarrassed at his performance.

A narrative way to automatically stop the persistent fire damage. If you'd rather maintain agency and picture something else, I'm totally happy to roll with it. Voron is still seriously injured. Also don't forget some of your free goodies. You can also buy some. Once two party members concur you're ready, we can follow to this mysterious address!

Yeah, I more meant that I thought the prior rounds of persistent damage had been accounted for up to the water-jump. Yeah, rough shape indeed. Time for some healing...
Voron, breathing heavily and showing several serious burns, reaches into his pack for a vial. Even as his hand passes the heavy canvas of his pack he whimpers from the pain of the burns on his hands.
Minor potion of healing: 1d8 ⇒ 1
That barely did anything! I'm going to use two of the ones the VC gave us...

Gotcha Voron. So we're still not at 100%, with one post in Discussion advocating for a bit more healing. Once a plan gets a second vote, I'll advance!

Voron slows down, taking care to treat each wound skillfully. Before long the party is ready. The path to the abandoned tavern takes you through a crowded market square in the Puddles district. A few dozen merchants and shoppers mill about, going about their daily business. Merchants hawk their wares from colorful stalls as a few dozen shoppers mill about a cramped market square, selecting goods, haggling, and making trades. The eclectic vendors here sell everything from clothing, food, and spices to alchemical items and weapons.
The dockhand’s directions have you taking the relatively empty street directly north of the market, which leads toward an obviously run-down neighborhood in the distance. When you begin to head down the street, you hear a strange rush of air followed by sudden shouts of alarm and an incessant buzzing!
You look up to see a quartet of horrid creatures. Each insectoid creature has two pairs of bat wings, a tangle of thin legs, and a needle-sharp proboscis. They have an inky black color to them, and the light even seems to avoid shining directly on them. Civilians everywhere begin to scream. Some bolt, others move to hide. Unfortunately many of them simply freeze in place!

Evindal attempts to recall if he's ever seen creatures like these before.
single action: Recall Knowledge - I assume Nature, in which case his bonus is +5; +8 if Arcana/Occultism might be appropriate. Particularly interested in weaknesses/resistances/immunities - basically, what sort of bomb should he throw?
Then he chucks a bomb at the Black one (or any other within 20' if Black is already down).
single action: Quick Bomber - draw and strike with one action. Bomb type will depend on whatever is best indicated by the Recall Knowledge check. If the check doesn't indicate any favorable type then he'll use Lesser Alchemist's Fire. Regardless, he uses his Bomber research field to only apply splash damage to the target itself, so as to not splash his comrades.

Evindal has heard of these things, they're a special kind of bloodseeker called a "shrouded bloodseeker." They've been touched with energy from another plane, though they're still animals. They're certainly not a native species here. Their unique nature doesn't cause them to be weak to anything beyond what you'd find in a normal animal. He does know that tearing one out while sucking blood will open up an extremely bloody wound though.
Will give a bit of time to make a bomb determination. That's a hit. I'll check in later today and if no post I'll make a command decision and then resolve.
