I was considering the shapeshifter form of Druid. I’ve actually ordered a copy of the 5e player’s handbook so I can learn a bit more about the system.

Grand Lodge

Combat focused okay, I will look at a few options leaning towards Paladin or Fighter though

1 person marked this as a favorite.

For me - entering stage right at the 2nd adventure makes thematic sense. Would also allow for my tiefling to be tailored more to the group's requirement at that juncture. I'll miss out on the developing dynamic of the group, but think I'm good with coming in later and complimenting what's been built.

@Axolotl: Swashbuckler is an archetype - essentially same as PF in that it offers flavour and mechanics to suit. Only gets selected at 3rd level and allows the character a chance to access specific abilities or augment current ones. Swashbuckler is one such option for Rogue :)

With regards the infernal siblings, mulling over their relationship... Are they on good terms, or at odds? Perhaps they share a philosophy or differ in how to conduct business? Might explain why my character has remained in the city... Does your tiefling speak of us and our business in glowing terms, or perhaps you've taken to the road to seek out opportunities for expansion... Am open to whatever strikes your mood - whether its brothers at odds or in arms :)

Grand Lodge

So I like the Battle Master Fighter, thinking a Human lass who wanted to be a squire but instead became more of a cook and maid until she left and learned more from an old adventurer turned Tavern owner. Now she is a knife [Dagger] welding chef with incredible combat training form just surviving gangs and tavern brawls!

Grand Lodge

Or a Paladin with the Oath of the Ancients probably a Firbolg or Elf?

Should we eventually be on the lookout for a new game recruitment thread or will it be through this one?

I mean I was going to do one just to have relevant stuff at the top in an organized post.

I’m on mobile I’ll post more later. Gotta few things to figure out here.

Grand Lodge

Hey Grimmy what races again, any hardcover races?

I rolled on the personality chart that my thiefling is very (perhaps solely?) loyal to family, so I picture him and his brother to be besties and working well as a team, although not without the usual sibling rivalry as to who is older/younger/etc.

@Critz,

I didn’t answer earlier because I was at an annoying engagement party and I didn’t have time to tally up the count and make sure there was still room. I didn’t want you to work on PC if not.

Good news I think there’s still a spot for you.

I think I need another divine character story wise more than a fighter. Well, the class doesn’t matter but I kinda need someone with a connection to the old Hyperborean Gods.

It’s not a must but it’s something I can fall back on.

Race wise there are no Firbolgs in the lore of the setting but I am happy to work with you to fit them in. I can see them being descendants of the ancients or something.

The main thing I am concerned about is that people get to play the character they are excited about so that the energy is high.

So guys, we have

Trifty with a half elf bard
Nevets elf wizard
Axolotl thiefling
Gerald Druid
Albion dwarf priest

I want to give this team a try. If you guys stick with this and work together to flesh things out you are in.

Black dow is connecting his teifling and helping us in the session zero, but he will join gameplay in the next adventure.

Everyone else, gnome artificer , illusionist, pirate guy, I was interested in the pitch if you want to do a submission still you can. There’s always cancelations or things that don’t quite come together. This will be a quick couple prequel/vignettes , things might look different before we come to the main adventure I was pitching when I started this thread. I might run two tables by then or something as well.

Regarding PM’s, guys PM’s are fine and have their place but most of this stuff id rather see in the thread. For the most part I’d rather have my responses here where everyone can read them.

I don’t think the thread is out of control huge or anything no harm in using it.

Secrets on the other hand please do use PM . It is too hard not to click on spoilers.

Thanks for keeping us in the loop Grimmy, I'm still excited.

@Nevets do you have any ideas on how we met? Obviously at an academy together, but like, how exactly? I will work on developing my character a bit more if you want to wait and see what I've got. Maybe you helped me with some reading assignment (as I had imagined my character being dyslexic) and in exchange my character helped you make a friend or get laid or something like this. And then from there we were just friends. Don't want to box you in so let me know if that doesn't work for you.

@Albion maybe we met at a tavern or whatever and my character just loved teasing you a bunch. And then when Nevets and I decided to track down the prophecy person we asked you to come with us for protection, plus maybe you also took an interest? Or not? Maybe something completely different? Again, don't want to box you in.

Just some thoughts for now.

Oh! Oh my it seems I was terribly mistaken. For some reason I thought there would be a different recruitment thread, so I hadn't submitted a character (I've just been reading everyone's stories, bathing in their genius. ;-)

Should I submit something or is the above aforementioned party now the party?

Yup that is the right idea, see that's why I went ahead and just let you guys know the list tonight so you can start working together without worrying if it's a waste in case someone doesn't get in. This makes more sense to me and is more like what happens naturally in IRL game groups of friends.

So that's my plan.

Now you guys need some stuff from me for sure like some kind of dramatic blurb about the adventure :D I'll work on that tomorow.

But hey we are getting somewhere.

Ask me questions. I have this 500 page history book about the setting I don't intend to read but I can look stuff up and make stuff up.

We don't need every single character to be connected, just have fun with it, nothing forced.

Albion might be delayed in appearing, we had a chat on PM.

The big university is in Endhome but I don't think all the PC's will meet in Endhome. Gerald is talking about a druid out in the backwoods closer to one of the adventure sites.

Likewise I was envisioning the tieflings being somewhere crummy and requiring a trip.

I get it, I said several times that I would be making a recruitment thread.

But, bear in mind, I lost my marbles the first time I ever played with them, and to this very day I have never found them.

The thing about these PbP games is, I don't get any joy out of going through submissions and accepting and rejecting them. I decided this time, there are a few people in here who are responding to me, reflecting back to me that they value the same things I do about gaming, and they seem ready to play some make pretend, so why not? Let's play some DnD.

Also I had PM'd some people who I know are good, and they all ended up responding so it filled up fast.

Once I saw a story taking shape why beat around the bush?

That's my strategy this time. Let's see how far they make it, probably all get eaten by swamp crabs anyway.

Grand Lodge

I PM'd you Grimmy

Thiefling - like it :) Might steal that lol.

Cool - all sounds plausible. In my mind's eye my tiefling is a known duellist and essentially works as part of our"business"/ fencing operation. Edit: Based on rolls below my Tiefling is a blackmailer...

Somewhere its potentially tied into this adoptive mother figure who is likely a female Fagin type - matriarch of the operation type of thing... opens doors to others who want to be connected to the gang - either directly or by association?

Criminal Background Rolls - just to shape some ideas (open to all interested):

Speciality: 1d8 ⇒ 1 Blackmailer. Interesting...
Personality Trait: 1d8 ⇒ 2 I am always calm, no matter what the situation. I never raise my voice or let my emotions control me. Makes sense...
Ideal: 1d6 ⇒ 4 Greed. I will do whatever it takes to become wealthy. (Evil) The blood of Mammon is strong in this one :)
Bond: 1d6 ⇒ 2 My ill-gotten gains go to support my family. Perfect - fits nicely
Flaw: 1d6 ⇒ 6 An innocent person is in prison for a crime that I committed. I’m okay with that. A blackmail gone wrong most likely

Well... some choice stuff there. Okay. First impressions. He blackmails the rich and powerful in an attempt to get what they have... "Pay the Devil his due" sort of thing. Given his line of criminal enterprise being handy with a blade comes with the territory. Aside from that he is driven my greed, but wants also to make sure his family want for naught (nice juxtaposition there). Finally he's blackmailed someone who ultimately put a patsy in gaol (or perhaps fabricated the blackmailing and they paid not in gold, but in prison time). Regardless he's fine with it... So a deathly calm, blackmailer. Nice guy lol... Have loads of ideas on the nature of the blackmail - depends how Grimmydark the game is...

What about if we met over a fight with a small roving band of humanoids? Like you were traveling (perhaps with a caravan?) and got jumped? Help came unexpectedly out of the bushes in the shape of a roaring, cursing and spitting dwarf? :D

I would like to play him as a conventional in attitude, but unconventional in thought dwarf. More concerned about human settlements than usual. Perhaps that is what drove him to travel? Grimmy, what is the situation with humanoid tribes, like goblins, orcs, hobgoblins?

Albion wrote:

I like this idea a lot better than the one I had. Let's go with that. Why did you decide to stick with us the rest of the way though?

I wonder if your character isn't similar in mindset to Gerald's druid.

Ouchh... I just had a really painful "forum ate my post " moment.
Uggghh... copy and paste long posts to a notepad folks, these boards are infested with gremlins.

@Critz I was typing up an explanation of the Hyperborean pantheon in response to your PM.

Will redo later.

@Trifty and Albion I had been thinking the dwarf could meet the party on the road during gameplay rather than setting out with them from Endhome. I was going to work with Albion to give the dwarf priest his own motivation to be searching in the same area. If you guys have come up with something you like you can go with it though.

However, if Albion has three weak's vacation happening, this may work out well. No need to have the PC present without a pilot, see what I mean?

More on humanoids later.

Ouch. That ALWAYS hurts, Grimmy.
You have my sympathies.

As for how we met at the Academy, Trifty, I simply LOVE the idea of my wizard tutoring your character because of her dyslexia. I wasn't originally intending to go all "haughty elf spellcaster", but more and more, I'm digging it. He likely wouldn't be helping out of the kindness of his heart, but instead because of the challenge it would give him, as well as the thought that he might somehow be able to make use of the fundamentals of the ailment as a code cypher or something.

The idea of Albion jumping in to help us out of a scrape would do much to endear him to my wizard as well...or since he's a dwarf, at least help the elf to see the value in keeping him around? :)
EDIT: Just saw Grimmy's comment on this and we can go with whatever works.

Grimmy, Has our starting level been decided for sure? Any other details? (Or was that in the ill-fated, lost post?

Aye, I was wondering about starting level.

Here's Beziriphas (not his birth name--that's unknown, and not his adopted name either):

Bez

Ha, Black Dow, my thiefling always gets upset when slighted. What a pair! I don't think he loves blackmailing either--he likes to steal things, which he argues is "fairer". :P

(spoiler: stealing is not fairer)

'Dow - where are Specialties to be found?

Variant Tieflings are in Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes--a Glasyan Tiefling would be so nice to get a point of Dex and you know, heir to the Mother of Spies. Only 30 dollars! This is how they suck you in, right?

Unless someone knows a good online character builder with sources.

The way I was picturing it, there would be a little expedition planned from Endhome. There is an errand for the temple that leads to an out of the way corner of the Gaelon River Valley. The elven-folk from the academy have their own reason for wanting to visit that neck of the woods (prophecy), and the errand for the temple means companions for safe travel.

This is the picture that emerged for me by looking at the modules, the locations on the map, and the character submissions in front of me.

This is why I say I still kind of need to squeeze in one more PC with a link to the temple.

Dwarf cleric and druid are divine magic characters, but I don't think they would be city folk with a link to the temple. Group is big though.

The lost post was lore and I'm a good way into re-writing it.

We'll be starting from first.

27 point buy. I'll make a thread with everything organized up top in a first post.

This is where I admire Paizo a lot more than WOTC. OGL and PRD was very righteous.

Supposedly as a GM I can share whatever I have in DnDBeyond with the players, but I don't think I bought the Tome of Foes.

They might let you buy just the race you want though, for the online builder, without buying the whole book. I've done that for classes, monsters etc. Few bucks here and there.

Didn't know about the variant Tieflings, tho' it makes sense. Will have a look at what pops also.

@DMG: What's your thoughts on the tiefling twosome thus far?

Ok I rewrote the long history post. Please at least one of you read it haha!

History of Hyperborea:

In ancient times the continent of Akados was settled by Hyperboreans. They came from Boros, the frozen far north. Today it is impassable, buried beneath many hundreds of feet of ice, so that one cannot delineate between sea and land.

These Hyperboreans marched south over Akados and cleared great swaths of forest. They clashed with elves and made alliances with dwarves out of the Stoneheart Mountains.

They consolidated a pantheon of Gods and unified all the human tribes under their rule, ushering in a golden age of civilization. The three sibling gods Thyr, Muir and Kel cast out the ancient demon lords of the abyss and banished them to Ginungagap.

This civilization ruled the continent for millennia, fending off nomadic raiders and humanoid tribes, as well as settling distant exotic lands.

The great King Oeric, following a vision from the Goddess Muir, marched legions across the far eastern continent of Lybinos to find a sacred tableu encircled by mountains where he was to establish a holy city.

Oeric abdicated the throne and became a simple penitent man of the cloth, establishing the office of Pontifex of the Three. His brother became Imperatrixx in his place. Tircople was established as the seat of the triune sibling Gods of Law, and stood as a pilgrimage site and seat of spiritual power for millennia.

After 25 centuries of Hyperborean domination, a celestial event tipped the world on it's axis, bringing sweeping climactic changes. Dire omens and augurs were foretold by the oracles of the empire. The most powerful Hyperborean mages attempted a massive ritual to set things right, but it failed, bringing cataclysmic fires, famines and ice-flows.

The Hyperboreans withdrew from the continent, fleeing into eastern lands towards their Holy City. Tircople became the new Hyperborean capitol in exile, and the offices of Imperatrixx and Pontifex were merged. Back on Akados, the various human tribes who had been subjects under Hyperborea were now left to forge their own fates in the now burned out landscape of Akados.

Seeing the disorder, Heldring raiders came in their longships to plunder and pillage. Tribal chieftains with ties to the last Hyperborean legionaires fought back the raiders, sending request to help from Tircople, whose Imperatrixx responded that they should send their Kings as petitioners and She would hear their plea.

When the Kings never returned, the tribes employed druids to divine their fate. What they saw was horror. Tircople had fallen into darkness. The Imperatrixx Trystecce, now a sorcerous lich, had claimed their Kings and betrayed them. The Holy City was defiled. A tribal hero led a force to Tircople and succeeded at slaying the lich-queen, but perished himself when her phylactery exploded.

Following these events the true Hyperboreans withdrew from the world, fading back into the distant northern continent from which they had come. Those who remained were descended into necromancy and madness.

Are you kiddin I live for this stuff. My theory is if you guys are talking to me that's good, if yuo're talking to each other that's better.

I have to give you some info about the town I would hope to have you active in, hopefully it suits you. Other choice is just have everyone in Endhome? Easier? Anyway this is like adding salt to stew, you can always add more but you can't take it out. In other words I have to save some detail for gameplay. Ditto for university, etc.

See this reply I sent to Albion, copy pasted here to share the sentiment.:

Hey buddy,

It’s no problem at all. People who I know to be good energy posters are the biggest asset to me. That’s why I PM’d you. There’s nothing wrong with characters entering the storyline later at separate times. You don’t have to sacrifice things in your personal life that’s not what it’s all about. Just join in after your vacation when you’re rearin' to go. Just like BD.

One thing I would appreciate is if you pop in to chime in with the brainstorming discussion stuff. That is the thing I value a lot. If you look at what Black Dow just did. Showing up and addressing his post to other players getting them interacting in creating personalities that have dynamics between them that can be explored. That is what will make the foundation of a memorable game. Not just players writing a backstory alone in a vacuum and I select from them. It’s not the best model for good dnd .

We need to somehow become a game group not just people filling out job applications.

The thread is the place we make that happen so I’d rather keep as much of the communication there as possible. That’s how we all get to know each other. (Apart from secret stuff and surprises, those we should keep to PM [sic].)

Well, I don't want to push you into the haughty elf spellcaster thing too much, but I'm glad you liked the idea. I'm not dyslexic myself, but I like the idea of someone who's very learned, knowledgeable, and eloquent not actually being able to read very well. Anyway, the basics of the condition, in case you don't know, are that it interferes with the ability to connect symbols (letters) with sounds.

How pleasant do you think your character would be to interact with?

I also hadn't picked a gender for my character yet, but I'm kindof getting behind the idea of her being a woman.

Oh not at all. DnDBeyond is just a convenience. You can certainly use pencil and paper, online wiki's, or I will be happy to walk through the steps with you.

If folks find any of this hard let me know, it looks like if I bump up my dndbeyond subscription to a higher tier, everyone can use my stuff on there.

But yeah, it just has a nicer UI. wiki's are fine.

You didn't push me on the personality, no worries. He didn't HAVE a personality, and you just triggered it with your idea.

Likewise, I wasn't trying to push you towards a female character if that's not what you intended. Not sure how/why I came to that conclusion. Obviously play what you like...it's YOUR character.

As far as how pleasant he'll be...he's going to be reasonably polite in public at the very least...just arrogant and impatient. While quite smart, he'll think he's smarter than he is. One of the things I want to play up will be his grudging/growing respect and feeling of protectiveness for your character, since you're obviously overcoming a disability, and have come to him for help.

Edit: For further clarification, Saendithas might at times be a pain in the ass, but the player won't. It'll only be for fun, and intended to make for cool interactions. Feel free to take him down a notch or two if he gets uppity. ;)

Grimmy, I'm not sure how important to the game it will be, but from the history you shared (since that's one of Saendithas' skills), how long ago was the Imperatrixx Trystecce defeated?

Grand Lodge

Still waiting for the reply but with that blurb Grimmy I think Muir may work.

@Critz that whole blurb started out as your reply. It got so long I just made it into the write-up I can use on the recruitment page. There will be a part 2 also.

Critz I don't want to force you into the divine role. You need to play what you are excited about, that's the main thing. If I have to make two tables to fit different concepts I will. Edit"Maybe just not right away. I do have to make sure I can handle it. But yeah I did have a hook planned with temple of Muir.

-----

@Saendithas The whole episode with the lich-queen happened in the 2500's, when Hyperborean empire had been around for 25 centuries. Then it ended.

We are now in the 3500's.

What happened in the 2000 years since then, is that the tribes who had been subjects under the Hyperborean's all got together and became a new empire called Foere.

The Cult of the Demon Prince Orcus had established great power centers in Hyperborean ruins. The City of Tsen and the City of Tsar became great enclaves of evil.

The Foerdewaith restored the Holy City of Tircople and led centuries long crusades against the legions of Orcus.

Now those apocalyptic battles are long over, and no one thinks it's important to keep up with those boring old Gods.

The orders of paladins are not in their full glory. The most high level priest and paladin in the whole church might be 12th level, no level 20 NPC's around.

All the important shrines are getting overgrown and reclaimed by wilderness.

Civilization is in decline.

------

@Albion I'll get to your humanoids later. They are definitely in the Duskmoon Hills north of Endhome, but I don't want to head there in the first chapter.

I may grab a character sheet and fill it out based on what I find, as the Soulknife Archetype seems really cool. I want my tiefling to be a little less combat-y and a little more skill-y, and there's actually some skill bonuses that the Soulknife gets...and, yeah, psychic blades.

Anyone seen Trese yet? There are a pair of completely goofy magical brothers who are more fighters than rogues, but truly wonderful characters. Trese is a Netflix show all about a woman solving supernatural crime in folklore-haunted Manilla. And a friend o' mine is a voice actor on the show!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I filled out a character sheet here. Should we also put all our stats and stuff on an alias?

I tried to avoid skill overlap a bit. I went for maximum dex and decent con, so I should be ok at using weapons/being attacked when necessary.

Ok cool. No worries, I was already leaning in that direction anyway.

I am assuming that when play starts we've already known each other for a while, so our relationship would already be pretty developed at that point. My character would cultivate respect, but she's not made of glass and doesn't need protecting. If someone looks down on her, she'll look right back down on them, and if they're in a position of power over he she'll forge her own path somewhere else. Still, if Saendithas helped her she would come to trust and perhaps depend on him.

I probably have other stuff to say but I had a couple of drinks recently and I'm a tiny bit fuzzy :).

Oh, I didn't mean he needs to protect her. It's more of a "Hey, that's my friend!" kinda thing. ...I think it likely that he wouldn't have a lot of friends to start with...

Hmmm Okay I will put it up to the group then I have three ideas

Human Battle Master Fighter who is failed squire turned Tavern Chef

Half Elf Paladin Oath of Ancients who is here to help fight off the forces seeking to profane the Ruins.

or a Halfling Monster Slayer seeking to Stop a suspected mythological threat to travellers near the ruins. It still eludes him

Grand Lodge

Though I am open to a variety of ideas, I don't want you guys to be left squishy and unprotected, and love challenges!!

I never watch TV anymore but that sounds good. I did binge watch critical role in the beginning of covid. Lockdown in India was stressful those voice actors really helped me unwind.

@everyone Keep up the awesome character development. Did you guys all do 27 point buy? Starting gold or equipment packages are fine. Oh, and yes @gmtrifty, character sheet in an alias is the way to go for sure.

@Critz which one is most exciting to you? I actually liked the firbolg idea too. The thing I loved about Priscilla Springheel was that I really could believe she was a real person. You might not know this but I actually got a PM from someone in City of Ashes saying they were intimidated to be in the group because you were so good haha.

It seems like the fighter chef might know the tieflings, the ranger or the paladin might know the druid and the dwarf. Or the paladin might accompany the scholars out of the city on an errand for the temple. Depending how much of a "green knight of the woods" he is, or more of a templar.

Grand Lodge

Me intimidating...especially with innocent old Priscilla never.

I kinda have a hard choice then. I like the Fighter idea. But you are right the Firbolg Paladin gives me ancient protector of the woods

The halfling was a side thought. Hmmm

Young girl with aspirations of becoming a knight, gets a rude lesson of the world only to become a retired adventurers aid and Chef

Or A young firbolg who has been thrust into being a Paladin and ancient guardian. A legacy he didn't ask for but took up. Conflicted with duty to his family and his oath as well his original plan to just become a sage instead of the gaurdian..

Hmmm. Perhaps the firbolg and my wizard could have bonded (at the academy or some sort of festival at the church grounds) over some sort of scholarly discussion?

I like both. Either fits in.

Here's a link to my old wiki with pantheons and such. Of course since this time they printed about 500 pages of detailed history . Even Albion has like seven choices for dwarf gods now.

Have you guys seen this? Old-school Primer

How oldschool do you want to go with this haha. XP for gold?

Grand Lodge

Yeah after the descriptions I am leaning more towards the Firbolg Paladin with Oath of the Ancients

Grand Lodge

Like 1e...I vote no on that.

Okay gonna make my Firbolg Paladin made an Oath to an Archfey under Freya. Who wants to see the lands restored with abundance but also make sure vile creatures don't pervert the land

Cool. You don't have to choose Muir by default. If you are interested in a more nature focused deity from the pantheon you can. All paladins will still have special respect for Muir and it could be that the church uses you as a guide for trips.

I just discovered they have a whole pantheon of the ancient ones, with all the celtic/tuatha deities.

There are druid gods, bard gods, magic gods and trickster gods too which may interest the other players.

It's hard to copy paste these. Does this link work without a subscription?

Edit: there are no firbolgs in the book, but there is something called the Ancient Ones. The tribes that sent a hero to kill the lich queen came from these folk. They have celtic flavor lore. I would say these can be our firbolg. This means you are from a lost time and not known to todays world.. Your family may wish you to stay hidden in deep forests.
