Mr. Pitch flies towards the grove and sees:

A narrow trail winds among majestic elms, at times disappearing into thick shrubbery. The bushes between the trees are dense, rising to a height of eight or ten feet. The elms themselves average 75' tall, and they are the only trees here. They are widely spaced, allowing much
sunlight to pour between their ancient boughs. He sees a ramshackle cottage on the far side of this small grove...flying up to a window and warily looking within, he sees what appears to be an old hermit...but no sign of Elves...

Meanwhile, back at the inn, an examination of the documents will reveal to Mheenah the very poorly kept bookkeeping records of the inn...but she finds no clues in the paperwork about her mistress's possible whereabouts...

Mheenah picks up a nearby pencil and goes about changing some of the numbers on the ledgers-- adding zeroes, changing 5's to 6's and 2's to 8's, just because.

After a few minutes of this, she flits over to the wooden chest on the north wall.

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

Since the chest is obviously safe, she tries to open it.

Take 10 on Disable Device if locked (DC 17)

Mheenah is able to pick the lock easily...however...

...gas escapes from the lock and Mheenah can't help but breathe some in...and she feels herself moving slower...

Even so, she can still see the chest contains fresh aprons, a longsword, and routine items of clothing.

Mheenah feels the slowness fade after a minute or so...

Perception DC15:
You discover a secret panel in the bottom of the chest; upon opening it, you also find 136 gp, 496 sp, and 889 cp.

Mr. Pitch flies back to the front of the inn to meet with the other familiars.

Upon finding the money, Mheenah giggles and claps to herself, still feeling a little giddy from the gas. Quasits are immune to poison, if that makes a difference? She picks up a stocking from among the clothing items in the chest and fills it up with the coins, or at least as much of the gold and silver as she can manage to carry, then closes the chest again.

She takes a last look around the room, just to make sure she isn't missing anything.

Perception on room: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

Then she bounces out the door like a scaly little Santa, swag hoisted onto one shoulder. She closes the door behind her, leaving it unlocked, then jangles along the north wall of the inn to go check on the ferret and the wolf.

Spirit excitedly races around the inn, though he makes sure to stay away from the front door. He notices the door that Mheenah went in and curiously pokes his nose in.

"Lookee!" says Mheenah triumphantly to the ferret.

Spirit runs over and takes a look, then starts jumping around excitedly. "You found something secret! Let's open it! Let's open it!"

Spirit then proceeds to use his telekinetic powers to try to open the trap door.

Spirit telekinetically slides the latch back and opens the trapdoor…

Mheenah and Spirit peer down the opening, seeing a ladder built into a wall leading down to an area with passages…they get the sense this underground lair might be quite large and winding…

"How'd you do that?" says Mheenah, who is obviously newly impressed by the silly ferret.

The quasit buzzes out the door and rustles up the others. "Hey, we found a hidden trapdoor in the innkeeper's room, we're gonna investigate it!"

She also takes a few minutes to dig a shallow hole near a rain barrel, and hides her sock-o-loot inside, then buries it quickly, marking the spot with a black pebble.

"Ok! You keep guard up here!" says Mheenah. "If that schmuck comes inta the room, bark a warning then bite him lots!"

Mheenah then flutters down the trap door hole.

Spirit waits impatiently for the others to show up, prancing around the trap door the whole time. As soon as Mheenah flies down he races after her.

Mheenah flies down and Spirit comes climbing down shortly after...

They find themselves in a room that contains a table, several benches, and a ladder rising to the trapdoor in the ceiling that they just entered from. In the eastern corner is a stout wooden door with a bar across this side holding it firmly shut. The room is otherwise empty.

Perception DC10:
You feel a cold and slightly damp draft coming from the barred door...

Mheenah lands on the table and allows herself to become visible again. "What the heck *is* this place? A secret hideout?" says Mheenah.

She flaps her way over to the door.

Spirit excitedly explores around the room. "A seeeecret hideout!" Spirit quietly exclaims in agreement to Mheenah, apparently because whispering seems appropriate in a secret hideout.

He searches around the room for anything super-cool. After all, why have a secret hideout except to hide something super-cool in it?

He turns towards the door after a bit. "Maybe that's where they hide the really cool stuff!" he says after the quasit mentions the breeze.

As Lorelei and Mr. Pitch join the other two, Spirit searches the room but finds nothing interesting. Meanwhile, Mheenah unbars and opens the door to reveal...

The corridor beyond the eastern door has been hastily excavated from the dirt, and is shored at 5' intervals with heavy timbers on the walls and ceiling. The ceiling is only 6' high. The floor is smooth dirt, and there is an odor of must and decay here. The air is unusually cold. Many rats scurry for cover as the door is opened.

Unlike their giant relatives, these rats do not attack and appear harmless...

Spirit goes to the first intersection and looks around; he sees the passage to the east fork into two, both appear to be still heading east. The passage to the south appears to turn southeast…

With all the mice scurrying about, Mheenah quickly and easily snatches one by the tail…

Mheenah immediately lifts off into the air, yanking the rat up by the tail so that its back legs splay out stiffly.

"Hehehehe! When you get 'em like this, they're helpless! It kinda paralyzes 'em!" she gloats as she hoists the rat up with both arms and hovers a couple feet off the ground.

You notice faint claw-toed footprints leading towards the northeastern passage...and more recent bootprints coming and going to the eastern passage.

"Hoo, don't go that way. That's where all the stink is." says Mheenah as she sniffs the air coming from the northeast passage. She begins to spin around with her rat, like an athlete throwing the hammer, then releases the rat so it goes sailing off down the stink path. There is a faint squeak as it bounces back to earth.

Then she flutters off down the eastern path, following Spirit.

As Spirit scurries down the eastern passage, Mr. Pitch flies/hops down the NE corridor; he sees that it forks once again. To his left, it opens into what appears to be a larger chamber...and the smell grows even fouler as this chamber is surely the source. To his right, the tunnel continues on...

Since two of your friends went down a different tunnel, do you enter the chamber alone?

Meanwhile, Mheenah avoids the stinky passage and flies after Spirit. The corridor gradually descends away from the inn. At first, there is only 6' of headroom, but as it leads to a room, you find the room's ceiling is 10' off of the floor. A passage runs east out of this chamber another runs southwest...

What do you do?

"The inn's just a front, silly!" says an excited Mheenah. "Dintcha hear what I said? It's a cult! Led by She! Maybe, like, a Spider Queen -- or a Succubus! Ooh! Or maaaaaybe, a DROW priestess!" Her delight at enumerating these apparently marvelous possibilities has her hopping around the wolf like a playful pup.

@Mr. Pitch: if you'd like to peek into the chamber the smell is coming from, give me a Stealth roll please. Also, even though you are not in the combat currently, I put you in initiative so please make your moves in by round, i.e., a move & standard action or two moves...

Lorelei joins Mheenah & Spirit as they check out the room...

As Spirit sees tracks leading towards the NW wall of the chamber...but before he can move to check out it out, a snake drops from the rafters, landing next to Lorelei and strikes at her...

Bite: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

...but its fangs just fail to penetrate the wolf's chain shirt...

This is a constrictor snake; if its bite lands, it can grab and constrict you for additional damage. For every 5 over the DC, you may ask another question.

I re-rolled for Mr Pitch’s Stealth, so no worries…

Mr. Pitch hops quietly to the opening chamber, peers in and sees:

A large room with bones scattered about and three humanoid creatures with long, sharp teeth and their pallid flesh is stretched tightly over starved frames…

The raven does not think he’s been spotted…

Meanwhile in the other room, Mheenah pounces on the snake, her claws and teeth gaining hold on the scaly skin…

Spirit accurately sends a telekinetic rock at the snake, hitting it a glancing blow off its head…immediately after, Lorelei chomps down viciously on the snake, ending its life as it goes limp in the wolf’s jaws, then falls motionless to the chamber’s floor…

Mheenah picks up the limp snake.

"Ohhh! Please don't bite me so hard! I's a good snakey, I is!" says Mheenah in a silly falsetto voice while she wiggles the snake around in her claw like a puppet. She makes the snake tail pat Lorelei's flank. "I promise I'll be gooood! Just save me from that deeeemon!"

Then Mheenah bites down on the snake's head, yanks it off the snake's body, then spits it out.

"Wow, he talked too much. Am I right?" she says, elbowing the ferret.

"Oh, hi there Old Crow, you missed all the fun!"


Mr. Pitch rejoins the others to see them over the body of a massive snake.
"Ah. Impressive. But I can beat that. There are three zombies down the end of the bad-smelling tunnel. Luckily I was not seen."
