The Festering Blot | Tarnbreaker’s Trail

Welcome!

I always do my best to run a friendly game. I want people to have fun and everyone to be able to laugh when something crazy happens.

I like it if everyone can post at least once a day. If you are going to be away from the game for a short period (such as attending a convention, on a short vacation, or needing to do some business travel), I would ask that you please post that here so everyone involved knows.

Character Profiles

Please have a profile header displaying a brief overview of your character's current status. At the least it should include current/maximum hit points, AC (including flat footed and touch), saving throws, and any pools of expendable resources such as panache, grit, arcane pool, rounds of rage, rounds of bardic performance or other things that get expended as you use powers.

In the character profile, please include a complete stat block. You may put it under a spoiler if you wish, but if you do so please put it under a single spoiler. I do not want it split across multiple spoilers.

If you have your character sheet on a different site, please have a link to it in your character’s headers. This allows me to pull it up from any post by the character, rather than having to go to the profile and from there to the external sheet.

If you want examples, the PbP GM Kit has the pregenerated characters done in BB Code. Use those as a general guideline.

Botting

Botting is when someone else makes a roll or otherwise does something on behalf of your character. Bot is short for robot.

Please include botting instructions in your profile and a general tactics in case someone else needs to bot your character. It is alright if you put this in a separate spoiler from the stat block, but once again please don't split it over multiple spoilers.

If there are resources you don’t mind being used up by botting, please say so. If there are resources you never want a person botting using, it is alright to say that as well.

If it makes you more comfortable, you could specify who you want to run your character when you can’t post.

If your character has any abilities that interrupt play such as Swashbuckler Parry and Repost, Dual Cursed Oracle’s Misfortune Revelation, the Bard Spell Saving Finale or anything else that would interfere with resolving a check, I ask that you have something at the start of your Botting instructions about when you want this used. The reason is that it can really slow down a PbP if every action is serialized.

In my experience, creating a bot structure can help with your own posts as well. Assuming you put complete dice expressions in the botting directions, it makes it easy to cut and paste.

Initiative in PbP

I will roll all Initiative checks for PCs and NPCs, sort them, and organize them into blocks. I will bold the names of characters that should act. I will take the NPC actions in order and reserve the right to delay an NPC in order to make them act with a group of other NPCs.

When it is your turn to act, please post. Do not wait for someone else to post just because they had a higher Initiative. If you know what you want to do but want to wait for someone else’s action to go off first, just say that.

Here is an example of how you could post before another player but have it go off after another player:

Quote:

Sir Cumference waits for the elven archer Mister Oakleaf to get done firing his arrow before charging the Wily Snark.

Attack with Pointy Stick: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Piercing Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

I (and many other PbP GMs) do grouped Initiative in order to keep the adventure moving. In PbP people will have different posting schedules and often live in different time zones. Waiting for everyone to post in exact initiative order could make a single round of combat take days to resolve.

Within the rules, it is as if everyone within the same Initiative block delayed until they could post.

Rules Questions

If there are rules questions, please post them in the discussion thread rather than interrupting the gameplay thread with rules debates.

In Closing

Come join me for a fun game!

EDIT So this is Faeria, she's mad, and often thinks in unusual ways. See the "wish list" link above for insight into her thought patterns (although she is nothing like the artist--the song just fits). I also have Creat who is one of those humorous, sly, fun-loving rogue types, 1 XP away from 3rd level, and I have a heroic, quick-witted, acrobatic swashbuckler/pirate (Ranger 2) that I could also bring in the form of Colleen, or a barbaric, wild elf (think Elf Quest but taller) ranger 1/barbarian 1 in the form of Selfi. I have others that could fit the CORE 1-5 bill, but are more obviously already covered if folks are playing to class-type. I haven't had a chance to look at everyone's character sheet yet to see who would be best.

Character background summary:
Dwarf wizards are rarer than dragons - and dwarf wizards willing to take on a dwarf apprentice even more so. When Korgaar's master was killed whilst off adventuring, Korgaar was dispossessed and left with nobody to complete his training. The furious apprentice had no option but to pick up an axe and make his own way in the world. After several unsuccessful attempts to acquire a new teacher, Korgaar managed to get in with the Pathfinder Society. He hopes to prove himself in order to finish his training with the Master of Spells - and finally get his own spellbook!

Since Great Green God isn't 100% sure who to bring, I'll give a little synopsis of what Nala brings to the group.

Two Weapon Fighting with Sword and Board so melee for sure. Decent skills across the board with high perception so she would be comfortable scouting or near the front of the group.

The Core Rule Book and an online supplement that repeats most of the traits found in the back of the Advanced Players Guide, and you can use the various national languages of Golarion. You might try a search on the website for "Pathfinder Society Core mode" for more info.

I'm not completely settled on Faction yet, when I registered the character the website did not allow the normal choices hence the Grand Lodge symbol.

I have played this trilogy in Standard mode (a few years back now).

This series has stuff connecting to Dark Archive and Liberties Edge factions.

As long as I am given a faction for reporting before the first adventure is complete, I’m fine. If you want to get mechanical benefits, you do need to choose your faction.

You can add half the party's Charisma scores (not the modifiers) together and get 21. A single bard could have that at 5th level. Sans the sorceress the party butcher (whose face looks like he may have slipped a few times) has the highest score. That sorceress better have a lot of skill ranks. ;)

I personally don’t think they are axe-beak level boons.

Only the third one has boons locked to a faction, and they are bonus to skill under these circumstances sort of boons.

I’m putting it on my Dark Archive character so she is aware of the information uncovered in this series. That plus none of my standard campaign characters can get all three chronicles without burning replays because of the way things happened with GMing locally.

And we could choose to play up for part 1 if I've got the APL right (2.5, meaning we can opt to round down to 2 and play low tier or round up to 3 and play high-tier with 4 player adjustment). As a complete neophyte PC I'll suggest low tier for part 1.

Well, that's what all of your dwarfy hp is for.

If you like I do have lower level characters I could play mentioned above but non of them are as magical, knowledgeable, or as troublesome in combat situations as Faeria can be particularly down certain verdant paths.

GM Bret wrote:

GOOD! Have you ever had to take of a 9 foot-tall, 500 lb. pet bird? How would you even get it to stand on your shoulder? Faeria's axe beak would look like one of those flightless parrots from New Zealand.

Faeria's more the problem (naturally--it's her specialty) being a sort of self-nerfing 4th level character and all. I still have my rogue 2, ranger 2 (read: privateer), and elf barbarian 1/ranger 1 waiting in the wings. None of them are quite as knowledgeable as Faeria though. Nor are they wizards.

The Festering Blot | Tarnbreaker’s Trail

Right now we have:

Theron, Fighter 2
Faeria, Illusionist 4
Red Reverend, Cleric 3
Korgaar, Barbarian 1
Keynala, Ranger 2
Desynthia, Sorcerer 3

Total 15/6 = 2.5 exactly.

For this adventure you would be able to choose if you round the .5 up or down.

At APL 3 you would play high tier with 4 player adjustment.

You've plenty of ways to fix this by using different characters if you want to force it low tier on the later adventures. Swapping out Faeria for Creat or one of the others would do it initially, it depends on how many XP people have for what happens in the third part.

If you want it low tier all the way through, you probably want to figure out how to have total levels of no more than 15 at the end.

The other option would be for supervillan to sneak in some low level Core GMing that they apply to Korgaar before we start the second part -- allow him to become 2nd level before the end.

I only have the one core character and will be out of subtier regardless, so it doesn't much matter to me. But having the higher level people be the squishier classes does make me think low will be much safer.

So yeah, all that math goes goes to say that me bringing my fighter won't change a single thing, other than forcing us to play down on the first session instead of having the choice to play down or not.

You all can use my math to muck around with various scenarios to see if we want to sub anyone out. Or we could just play it as is and see how things go, assuming everyone is okay with the risk to their PC's. I'd still suggest playing down on the first session though. It'll give a couple of us a chance to level up and the dwarf a shot to gain some gold for gear.

Faeria is at 10 XP right now. Most of my level 2s are at 3 XP, I think.

I would kinda like Faeria to level, and regardless I think we could use a "wizard-type" (for knowledges, magic, and in Faeria's case disguise), but I like all of my PCs, and can play whatever we think we need. The three 2nd levels have useful skills (thief skills, water-borne skills, social skills, movement skills, etc...) and two them fight well, but we already have a fair amount of fight. I just don't have anyone CORE and lower level with Faeria's particular set of skills. ;)

EDIT: Des has skills, so maybe....

Alternate with Leon and Des's Rogue.

Scenario 1
Korgaar 1
Leon 1 (2 on 2nd)
Des Rogue 1 (2 on 2nd)
Faeria 4 (5 on 3rd)
Reverend 3 (4 on 3rd)
Theron 2 (3 on 3rd)

Total APL = 14/6 = 2.33 (Tier 1-2)

Scenario 2
Korgaar 1
Leon 2
Des Rogue 2
Faeria 4 (5 on 3rd)
Reverend 3 (4 on 3rd)
Theron 2 (3 on 3rd)

Total APL = 14/6 = 2.3 (Tier 1-2)

Scenario 3
Korgaar 1
Leon 2
Des Rogue 2
Faeria 5
Reverend 4
Theron 3

Total APL = 17/6 = 2.83 (rounds to 3 so we play Tier 4-5 with 4 player adjustments)

The end result is that we'll need at least one more player to swap to a lower level PC, IF we want to play down. I honestly don't know what the Tier 4-5 4 player adjustment looks like. Those can be pretty tough, or adjust well. It is really hard to say.

Looks like staying low tier throughout would need GGG to swap Faeria out for a 3xp PC.

I'm currently at capacity for PbP GM'ing (got three tables on the go, two of them modules and the third part of a mini-campaign), so dropping GM xp on is unlikely. I don't foresee opportunities for face to face GM'ing for a long while yet.

I think Korgaar can probably tough out a high-tier 4-player adjusted scenario once he's got a couple of xp and some gold to spend, provided the rest of the party is competent and has some actual in-tier PCs.

I would worry about permutations that had Faeria being the only in-tier PC though.

It sounds like the difference is does the group want to be forced to APL 3 on the second or third scenario in the series. It doesn't matter who swaps characters, you will still be forced there for the third scenario.

If Korgaar is fine with it, I would say people should play the character they prefer rather than try to manipulate the APL. Getting another ~500 gp will help a lot with his equipment going into the second scenario.

Indeed, please play the character you prefer and Korgaar will contribute as far as he can :)

I say we run with the original group and play low tier for the first run. Get a good feel for everyone and how we complement each other and manage the content.

If we handle things well, part two try high tier 4-player.

If we don’t, I have a minimal muss way to keep us low tier for part 2 and then we can worry about part 3 later.

TLDR: play who we want part one and figure it out as we go.

Alright Great Green God, which of the two are you going to play this with?

Faeria or Colleen?

As stated before, it will only make a difference in tier on the second scenario, you will be at or above APL 3 on the third scenario with either character.

Everyone,

I have a slide deck put together. On the second slide is a place for you to put your avatars in marching order. Please just delete the blank icons when you put your icon on there.

The link is in my header and in the Campaign Information so you can easily get to it from your Campaigns page as well.

Thanks!

Red is a slow-moving melee cleric, so should probably be close to the front, but possibly behind the fighter and barbarian.

I've placed Korgaar in the middle ranks. With speed 30 he can get to the front when needed.

It looks like we have 5 melee characters, though all of us have passable ranged options too. Therefore I think a couple of more resilient (ie not level 1!) PCs should take the front row.

I think Nala should go first since she has a high perception and is okay armored? She could go last though, her movement should be high assuming she has longstrider up.

So for now I'll just put her up front.

Done and added Colleen to the end. She is welcome to have a charge off my wand of longstrider to help her speed as well.

Anyone else can have a charge too, IF they can activate it somehow.

Would Bracers of armor stack with Armor spell?

Infos on Summoning spells:

Creature summoned by Desynthia have DR 1/ Evil, +4 to CON/STR from her Augment summoning Feat, and have Celestial template (Darkvision 60 feet, Resist 5 Cold, Electricity and Acid; Smite Evil 1/day (Charisma bonus to Hit, HD bonus to damage)

So a Celestial Eagle (her favorite) would stay for 3 rounds once summoned, will have STR 14 (+2 to dmg) , CON 16 (+2HP, total 7, and +2 to Fort saves)

No.

Why DR 1/Evil?

Bestiary has the template on pg. 294:

Celestial Creature Hit Dice 1-4
Resist Acid, Cold, and Electricity 5
