Baldrick Longhall |
"I'm not cutting off my beard!!"
Glancing around the circle, Baldrick shrugs: "Weelll... I think I could probably scout ahead..."
Trying not to metagame here, but Baldrick might have a spell that could help, but someone needs to volunteer for the task (or just let it be known that nobody will do it so that he can do it himself)
Rodney Lash |
Rodney has a +5 in stealth so he is willing to give it a try.
"I am fine going but give me 10 min. to cast a spell so if they are talking I can understand what they are saying."
He casts Comprehend Languages as a ritual
Aeshuura |
Is anyone going with Rodney? Bear in mind that his Perception for sight checks will be at disadvantage because of the dim conditions...

Khitt considers Umikh’s idea for a minute. ”Might work… but I think Rodney might have a good idea too. Lets do some poking around first.”
Khitt volunteers to go. Darkvision might help. Exhaustion makes it risky though.

Standing next to Khitt, Baldrick's expression brightens: "Oh! Yeah, I bet you'd be quieter than me!" He bounces up and down, making his chain shirt jingle.
Clapping a hand on the goblin's shoulder: "So, how good are you at hiding, anyway?"
Invisibility
Baldrick staggers back in shock: "Sweet Silverbeard, where did he go!?"
Aeshuura |
On the plus side, that cancels your disadvantage... So, Khitt and Rodney? Anyone else want to join? Will wait for Rodalas to give an answer... Funny thing is none of the dwarves are going... ;)
Baldrick Longhall |
Aren't I the sneakiest one of this group? the eladrin asks.
Probably, but I assumed you weren't interested in the job.
Aeshuura |
The shelter of the steep walls of Kelvin's Cairn is welcome as it has a pocket where the winds do not cut into you, giving the illusion of warmth amongst the chill. You approach the watchtower, a tower with arrow slits largely granting a firing arc over the gully below, but one points your direction.
Okay, let us make Stealth checks. Of the three of you. If you beat the DC by 5 or more, you can cancel a failure from another PC. This is for the three scouts only (Rodalas, Rodney, and Khitt).
Baldrick Longhall |
Does Khitt get Advantage for being invisible?
As the scouts set off, Baldrick shoves his shield into a snowbank and sits down behind it. Picking through his pack, he pulls out a snack and a drink. Food halfway to his mouth, he glances up to the others: "... er, unless we want to start a fire? Then we could make some soup!"
Aeshuura |
The advantage is canceled out by his level of exhaustion, so at least he doesn't have disadvantage! ^_^

Oh right! lol I forgot about that :P
Khitt |
Khitt is taken back at first wondering what has happened, but it doesn’t take the goblin long to figure out that his dwarven friend’s penchant for magical surprises must have struck again. Even through his weariness, Khitt recognizes an opportunity to get into this fortress and decides to take it.
moving stealthfully with the others. I also realized I had not picked a spell to learn for 5th level. :( Is it OK that I pick up Magic Weapon? I may have picked up Pass Without Trace but I figured it would be TOO convenient since we are already this far into things. It would have been cool to have dark vision (for Rodney), but not honestly sure he would have chosen it.
Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
oof, those dice rolls though.
Aeshuura |
Pick what Khitt would have taken before all this happened. If you believe he would have taken pass without trace, go for it. It certainly makes sense for the character. Convenience or no, it makes sense to me that he would have taken it.
Khitt |
Ok. If that is the case add 10 to our stealth rolls. Including Rodalas when he rolls.
Aeshuura |
Rodalas cannot fail with your help.
Khitt concentrates and calls upon the spirit of the tundra, and the snows kick up with the wind, obscuring the scouting party, somehow not obstructing your view as you move through the pass.
The first obstacle is a bunker, standing fifteen feet tall, with arrow slits, one facing your approach and the rest overlooking the gully below.
Remember, Rodney, without a light source, you have disadvantage on Perception checks, and -5 to your Passive Perception. A light source will ruin your attempt to Stealth, so I am sure that you are trying to make it without. It is dim light conditions here. If your Passive Perceptions are higher than 15 currently, you do not need to roll.
Khitt |
Perception w disadv: 2d20 + 5 ⇒ (2, 17) + 5 = 24
Khitt is too amazed by Rodney’s abilities to operate in the low light to notice much of anything. At least due to being invisible, no one can see how much trouble the goblin is having.
Aeshuura |
The less sneaky folks hanging back do their best to stay both quiet and warm
You can feel free to have a conversation, if you wish! ;)
Aeshuura |
My Passive Perception is a 18, but it is now a 13 when you -5, so here are the rolls.
[dice=Perception]1d20+8
[dice=Perception, Disadvantage]1d20+8
Interesting that disadvantage gave you exactly 5 less... XD Rodney, have you read the spoiler?
Aeshuura |
[dice=Perception w disadv]2d20+5

Man, Natural Explorer would have helped, granting double your proficiency in Int and Wis checks... :( But Canny, Roving, and Tireless are pretty good too...

I figure anyone in that bunker has probably already seen us, since we can see the bunker. Hunkering down around a fire, at this point, is probably less suspicious than us walking straight toward this hideout and then stopping to wait ;)

That is assuming I’ve chosen the right terrain. Even then, a plus 3 still wouldn’t have gotten me close. Lol The next level makes it all worth it for the climb and swim speed.

fair point, but you also put a lot of faith in those perceptive abilities in the tower. If we’re more than 120ft out from the tower, they are at the same disadvantages as Rodney assuming they are deuregar with the extended darkvision. A fire would just put a spot light on you.

Netz sits quietly in the snow with his warm coat pulled around him having made a burm to hide from.the wind and the enemy he says wonder how long they will be out there, can't really see them anymore. Hope they have a signal device with them. Should have thought of that before hand. Let's keep a sharp eye and ear on what's going on over there.
Aeshuura |
Go to sleep, little stone... The mason will acome in the morn... Rodney's dwarvish lullaby catches root in the sentry's mind and soon you hear a satisfying thud in the stillness of the shelter that Kelvin's Cairn offers.
Nice roll, a point below average. Are you passing the bunker, since it seems that there is little chance that you could get the others in there? Or are you going to go in and scout the inside (splitting the party?) BTW, Khitt and Rodalas may respec to Mordenkainen's Multiverse racials if they'd like.
Khitt |
Khitt will give scaling the wall a shot. No promises. He is the only one small enough to fit correct? If he can’t fit, disregard the roll.
Athlrtics w disadvantage: 2d20 + 4 ⇒ (1, 10) + 4 = 15
the torment continues
Khitt |
Khitt’s cold numb fingers are not able to find purchase on the dwarven walls. Just as he makes a little progress, a muscle cramp in his leg causes the goblin to come sliding back down to the ground. ”It just isn't my day.” he mumbles under his breath, again, thankfull for the invisibility spell to mask his failings.

Sorry for the confusion, it is a bunker, rather than a tower. You can squeeze past the arrow slits, if one of the others gives you a boost (no Athletics required)... The squeezing would be an Acrobatics check, but with that roll, not gonna do it. ;) So how would you like to proceed? Any ideas? It seems that the gates are open right now, so it seems that you have gotten this sentry out of the way and with a little stealth and luck...
Baldrick Longhall |
Baldrick looks around the corner of his shield before asking Umikh in a loud whisper: "Do you think we should ask how it's going?"
Khitt |
Asking Rodalas and Rodney quietly ”Well, these arrow slits aren’t wide enough. Should we try the gates? With some luck, the others might be able to come up with us unnoticed since you took out that guard Rodney. ”
Umikh Ironbender |
Baldrick looks around the corner of his shield before asking Umikh in a loud whisper: "Do you think we should ask how it's going?"
Waving at the stealthy folks but whispering to Baldrick, Figure they'll wave us up if'n it's safe.
Aeshuura |
After the thud of the falling Duergar and his subsequent snoring, nothing else...
Rodney Lash |
"Lets bring the others up." He whispers
He then starts to casts a spell. And back about 30 feet a large glowing hand forms waving to the rest of the party to come forward (Minor Illusion).
