Monster Attack

The wardens that acted first collect their mounts and head out to the outer wall. Upon reaching the wall you can see guards shooting arrows as braziers of fire lit up the top of the wall.

Upon reaching the top of the walls yourselves, you see a host of monsters that are walking or running towards your city. Goblins, trolls, and infested dire creatures. Some of the goblins and a few trolls have made it to the walls, as the arrows have not really stopped them. A platoon of soldiers come forward and prepare to stop any invaders if the gate is breached. What do you do?

Quince pulls out 2 wands. He aims one toward the thickest group of monsters that are rushing the walls. A wall of fire erupts 140 feet long directly in front of the largest group of trolls.

Kendryl will fly up and over the entire attack so that he can get behind it. Can he spot a leader of some kind?

Lykan leaps to join the defenders ready to sally the gates.

"Put up barricades, Should they breech the doors we'll make them pay with every inch they take!!! Archers get into formation to greet them!"

With his majestic mane, and imposing figure the elf looks downright horrifying to foes.

Still half-asleep and stumbling, Vesi joins their cousin on the parapet, squinting into the darkness at the approaching assailants.

"Oh no, what is going on? Why are they attacking?"

Without waiting for a response, the druid quickly weaves some magic that would help the defenders be more efficient.

Cast Haste on up to 7 targets close-by.


Kendryl, how high are you? If within 80 or so feet of the wall of fire and your darkvision is nulled but also you will need to continue out and stay at least within 60 feet of the ground to see them.

Quince gets to the top of the wall and releases magic. Those below can see a haze of light from the other side of the wall. As those on the wall see a majestic wall of fire come to their protection.

The archers aim together hoping to hit a target as they send another volley over the wall of fire. The guards on the wall do their best to prepare for the coming onslaught collecting the tar, rocks, and other items to defend with. At Lykan's mention the soldiers put their weapons down or sheath them, put down their shields and come help collect items to make a barrier should the enemy get through.

Some of the wardens are on the ramparts with Quince.

He appears beside the Lord Commander and nods at what he has already accomplished. He weaves some magic and the flames grow brighter and longer.

He looks over the wall and produces a few scorching rays. With that done he pulls his bow from an extradimensional space along with a quiver of large arrows. He then begins to shoot the larger forms.

Since there is little need for his leadership yet, he pulls his bow and takes aim at targets. Those that have reached the wall soon feel the pang of pain through his arrows.

Hearing Larina, he nods to her, knowing too well that the ranged attacks would not do as much damage as his steel. He responds to her, "That sounds like an excellent idea, come with me, we shall ask Quince." and walks with her to Quince. He asks the same question of Quince, "Do you want our mounted forces to come around from another gate or go protect other gates?"

He is the next person of not to reach the top of the walls. He looks this way and that and see Quince. He moves forward and asks, "What are your orders?"


She rides her huge mount of a hell hound through the main street as it is the only one that would allow for Ash's size. Reaching the Southern gate she yells, but can't be heard over all the noise. She dismounts and heads up the stairs. Once she finds Saren or Quince she asks, "Do you want me to come around with Ash from one of the other gates? Or protect the next gate?"

Quince would need a lot more info that his eyes would easily be able to tell him before he could make that answer.
1- Are they trying to climb the walls?
2- Are they trying to breach the gate?
3- Do they have siege machines?
4- Is it a few hundred? thousand?

Quince drops a second wall of fire running along the outside of the city walls slightly shorter than the city walls themselves with the hot side aimed out toward the monsters running toward the walls and gate.

There is a troll working on breaching the gate to little avail. The strong magically reinforced oak beams holding up nicely to its claw attacks. Which is being attacked by Sulvanii and nearby guards with rocks as tar is getting ready by another duo.

The goblins have grappling hooks but are easily dislodged when they get secured. The goblins are having a lot of trouble.

You haven't seen any seige machines or silhouettes of them. From what you can see probably a few hundred as opposed to a thousand. Though scouting would give more accuracy to that question.

He pulls out a scroll and reads it out loud, "I seek the ability to communicate with Selena through Sending, Selena are you and Stalker moving out to scout out their numbers? Please let me know, also a full report of what you already know."

He sighs with relief, "Initial scouting reveals a few hundred to a thousand. Trolls, goblins, dire animals, ladders, and battering rams. They will report back once done scouting."

50-60' above was exactly what I was thinking. This is a massive amount of monsters, there has to be a coordinator if not an actual leader


Kendryl:
As you fly over the wall of fire you can't see much. Though as you continue to fly out your darkvision returns. You see trolls, ogres, squads of goblins, and massive dire creatures covered in rot.

After a few minutes you see a infested boar that has a rider. This is the first one with a rider that you have seen. The humanoid is as corrupted as the boar and it seems like they may have a connection from the rider to the mount.

Do you continue or head back?

I have Quince with 2 walls of fire, Sulvanii with pyrotecnics, Vesi has hasted a small group upon the wall likely guards, Kendryl has flown over the wall to scout out, Lykan is helping with the militia and soldiers in making extra barriers should they get through, Larina approached and asked questions, Saren with some archer work and then a sending.

Any other spells or actions that you are wanting to put into the fight?

Gathering the moisture from the air, Vesi unleashes a powerful jet of water straight at the front ranks of the attacking forces, careful to avoid Quince's fiery walls.

Casting Hydraulic Torrent, bull rushing everything in a 60 ft. line (or until it encounters something immovable).

Kendryl continues his scouting, keeping the boar-rider in his sights. He also casts both Calirvoyance & Clairaudience so that he can see the rider and listen for whether he is giving orders.


After several minutes Kendryl likely returns... Your efforts to keep back the threats from the walls seem to be doing well as the larger number of creatures builds outside of the wall's damage area.

Are you sure you want to give us minutes. LOL that's a lot of rounds. Round 3 and 4 would be Walls of Fire Perpendicular to the our walls so that those trying to go around the one along our wall are boxed in. Round 5 would be a wall at the back completely enclosing them. At this point I would pass my Fireball wand to someone to start blasting the monsters in the center who realize they can't go any direction. Round 6, 7, 8 & 9 would be a second box. . . . This process would repeat while soldiers are focus firing on monsters not cooking. If we have minutes of fighting. Burning through 40 charges on both wands is a price Quince is quite willing to pay to keep folks from having to engage these monsters on the monsters terms.


Yes you get minutes! Assuming that Kendryl comes back and checks in with those on the wall. If you wait for the scouting report from Stalker and Selena that is going to take a good half hour.

Quince continues to use his wand of fire wall to create a death trap, 120 feet by 120 feet. Let me know it if is bigger.

Then Quince continues to make more fiery death boxes. 40 charges will decimate the goblin numbers then to mop them up with fireballs!

Cleo makes the top of the wall with the rest of you and takes the offered wand of fireballs to wreak havoc. Unless someone else takes it, any PCs?!

Runners come from the town and castle carrying misslies of all sorts: ballista bolts, javelins, spears, arrows, bolts, barrels of tar, large rocks, bullets for slings, and Master Craft ranged weapons to arm anyone to help with the volleys.

The militia takes over making the barricade as the soldiers grab their weapons and head up to the wall to assist. As Lykan guides them the barricade transforms into several walls. Many posts and logs have been brought forward to support the gate. Then there is the blocking fence line which many sharpened poles have been lashed too. Wagons and other items have been put between most of the alleys from the gate, only leaving the main through fare open as runners come and go.

Saren, Larina, and a few platoons of soldiers head over to the other gates to support them.

Kendryl:
After the first minute of looking for threats you see the fiery death boxes likely created by those on the walls. The boxes continue to box in group after group of the monster army. You continue to scout ahead to find that there are hundreds of foes every mile for several miles. You might wonder where they have come from.

You see and hear the boar rider giving gruff bestial sounds which seems to spur on the other creatures.

The boxes of fiery death work well as the fireballs finish off those within the boxes. As Quince continues to cast the spell each round eventually he makes about 3 boxes of death before the first one winks out. Then he pushes out the boxes to the next section beyond the first. Do you want to wait at this point or continue to expand the boxes?

Vesi keeps up the torrents of water pushing back foes that make it through the wall of fire. Though after the first minute no more creatures come through.

As the wand of wall of fire makes its second box he offers, "You could ask for it to be recharged, I have one more wish left today or you could wait maybe two hours and they will be recharged for tomorrow."

At Journe's question he nods and lets the arrow fly at its target. Then with his free hand he taps his belt and pulls out a wand. He then casts fire resistance upon Jorne and states, "No fire should hurt you with this abjuration. Good luck on your hunting. You know with my spells mostly spent, I think I will join you on that foray." Once Quince makes his wish or says to hang onto it, he jumps from the ramparts dropping 30 feet before activating his flight. He draws his black falchion and walks through the wall of fire.


She makes it to the wall and looks upon the battlefield with disinterest. She walks up to Quince and pulls out a hand towel and then conjures some water. Now with a damp towel she takes her time to wipe off sweat from the love's brow.

As Larina and Saren gather soldiers to go muster at the other gates he smiles at the group. Seeing the fiery death boxes work so well he asks, "Sulvanii or anyone else do you have the spell fire resistance? If so I will gladly move in and decimate any forces remaining." He shoots his bow with arrows while watching the magic destroy the front of the monster army.

With the protection granted by Sulvanii, he salutes Quince and flings himself over the wall. He takes the damage and gets up from the tumble and rushes forward through the wall of fire with his cold iron halberd that is crackling with electricity.

That is the size of A box. Meaning I will make as many boxes of hot death as needed.

As the fire protected defenders move out Quince will use the wand to keep force the enemy to meet them on their terms or at least have to cross fiery walls to get into position.

Quince half smiles at Sulvanii, "I know you are good for it sooner or later. I am not worried."


Minutes pass by as the flames purge the weaker creatures and the fireballs finish off the stronger ones, meaning the trolls and dire creatures.

At the ten minute mark since the fiery death boxes were created. The forces of the monsters seemed to stop coming forward. A line of large dominant creatures wait just out of range of the spell. Beyond them you can see hundreds more of the weaker creatures. They must have casters or special abilities as many of them are outlined in a glow of one kind or another. They are about 1000 feet away from the wall.

Perception DC 25 from the walls:
You see Sulvanii and Jorne stop as there are no more threats around them. They are about 100 feet out from the wall.

Perception DC 30 from the walls:
You see Sulvanii and Jorne put their melee weapons away and pull out their bows. Ready to release when the flood gates open. You can see two gargantuan or colossal sized creatures coming through the trees father North from the main body of the war host before you.

Perception DC 35 from the walls, or DC 5 if flying above the monstrous army:
Looking out you can see a collection of demonic beasts and dire animals. Most are infested with some kind of rot or pestilence. You see the gargantuan creatures seem to be armored bears.

After Perception DC 35 --> K Arcana DC 15:
You believe that the gargantuan creatures are owlbears.

Perception DC 45 from the walls, or DC 10 if flying above the monstrous army:
There is a huge boar and has a orange glowing rider that is at least large, there is much rot on them both. There is a giant with tattoos over its body with a red glow, showing off his heavily muscled ripped body. A feminine form glows green as large centipedes move around her. The most lit up of the four is an elf with blue skin and white hair, magic wells up visibly on him as he forms a semi circle of ice around him. Then he creates a spike that begins to grow in front of him aimed at the wall.

It was hard to see through all the smoke as Vesi squints towards the waiting forces. They had never been in a situation like this before, so the undine looks to Quince and the others, hoping they had some sort of plan.

"What should we do now? Can we send for reinforcements through the portals? Do you think they will besiege the city?"

Not sure if we are "in rounds" yet but on the next one Quince does this.

Quince turns Saren and speaks in Celestial, "Send signal through the city. To arms any and all able hands. He looks to one of his personal guard, go to the obelisk gate and ready those there to help those who are not able or fit to fight to make way to the other cities. Prioritize children and those that care for them."

Quince pulls forth a different want that looks like a braded sapling. He speaks a word in sylvan and about 450 feet from the wall a great swath of the forest goes into writhing life, its growth accelerated.

Cast Plant Growth to make difficult terrain using the 200 foot quarter circle option. Aiming to the right of the center of the approach to the wall is difficult. So from 450 feet to 650 is now difficult terrain.

Quince looks to the those around him still in Celestial though one of his personal guards repeats the order in common, "If you have something to aid in the fight now is the time. If it helps or blesses the other defenders even better. Summon creatures unleash them all."


Quince:
A sending from Bearik: "With your permission I will send the signal through the rings to rally arms of any able hands and the retreat of the innocent."

A great growth of plants from 450 feet away to 650 feet gives a bit of cover but mostly just making it hard to walk through.

He is now beside Quince and the others on the wall and asks, "Shall I go join Jorne and Sulvanii?"


Kendryl approaches Quince, "Your lordship, if I may borrow your wand of lightning, I would like to take the fight the the one who seems to be a leader. I can fly behind the lines and attack directly from above; it could pootentially be extrememly disruptive."

He waves his hand indicating where a second growth of plants from 450 feet away to 650 feet should go cutting off this one opposite the other. "Leave a little room for Jorne to get back to us."

He steadies himself, knowing full well the meaning of Quince's words. He picks up a longbow and pulls, then breaks it. He then asks the armorer, "Do you have something more... sturdy?"


The armorer comes forward with a thorned recurve bow. Though it appears small at first. Handing it to Krazok it grows in size to adapt to Krazok's strength. The armorer also states, "It is a very Cursed vicious dragon bow. Though I can't remember any of the other curses."

He confidently states, "It will have to work!" He then takes it and slowly pulls back on it making sure it can withstand his strength. He then nods to the armorer as he puts a quiver of arrows to his belt. "No use messing with it until... no... I should try it out to see if the curses are worth it." He then aims up and releases the arrow. It goes high but we can't see it. Krazok watches his target Jorne to see if it would hit. It hit indeed! The bow emits a hissing sound like a snake, dark red runes glow upon its surface and a sulfurous cloud of red miasma forms around Krazok. You can see where the bow has grown turns into the hand on the handle. A red glow covers his eyes as he shouts, "COME AT ME, YOU F#$%!NG C%NT BUCKETS..." The epitaph continues as he tries to antagonize the enemy into coming closer. Many of the soldiers back away from him slowly.

Meanwhile as the rounds pass by he continues to shoot at Jorne until he hits. He needs a 20... 20d20 ⇒ (6, 14, 8, 7, 13, 16, 4, 7, 3, 15, 5, 13, 14, 12, 20, 16, 20, 15, 6, 1) = 215 Round 15 and 17. Then the red glow passes from his eyes and states, "Oh uh that was exhausting, anyone have a lesser restoration spell for me?"

His axe on his back is resonating with the bow as it bleeds and light moans can be heard under the hisses. It's runes glow red as well.


As the plant growth wall grows every round by hundreds of feet the two colossal creatures rush the Northern gate, you have two rounds to act in response to them before they reach the wall next to the gate. The monstrous army charges after them.

As the massive beasts that have bodies of dire bears and a beak for a mouth, soldiers release a volley at it once it is within range. Then another round the arrows, bolts, ballista, other missiles, and a few spells hit the front creature.

"I can cast the spell 4 times my lord, but let me go first to retrieve Jorrne & Krazok. I will leave Fury here: he will signal everyone when I have the 3 of us us in the air and lead any additional flyers to our position. Ranginori guide us!"

Cleo quickly asks, "Wait, wait please slow down. Who will you be taking with you? You go and collect those two fools who rush into so many things. We will decide who would be best to go along with any wands that can be provided."

Sense Motive DC 22:
You know that she loves both Jorne and Sulvanii dearly and for that she can call them fools.

While Kendryl goes to get the duo, she asks, "I would prefer stay here as my protections are not severe like the others. Who else can use magical devices?"

Once Kendryl flies down to them, you can see them putting their bows on the backs and gathering their melee weapons. With Jorne on his back he flies slowly up to Kendryl so he doesn't have to land. Then to the wall.

On the wall he looks over at Krazok and asks Quince, "Is he alright? Oh No that is the Raven Bow, I suppose Krazok would be one who could weild it, I hope the secondary curses don't hit him too badly, luckily they wont kick in until he is done fighting."

I missed this a few days ago.

When I was growing up lots of families had cheesy art or embroidered pillows that had "The Family that Prays together Stays together on it." Couldn't resist.

Should nothing prevent the beasts...:
The massive beast charges towards the wall, a good 1500 to 2000 feet away from the East gate. It gets tangled up in vines but tears them up as it continues with its momentum... through the wall and through several buildings. The other one quickly follows into the town breaking another adjacent section of the wall to the hole.

Range on the spell is 170 feet, Vesi will move along the wall to get within range if needed.


So move and cast entangle each round until you get there or just dashes?
I also dont see anyone acting towards the colossal creatures.

Lykan continues to give orders to make more barricades, and is not on the wall so he doesn't even know of the threat.

Many of the men on the walls be they soldiers or guards raise their hands.

Quince passes on his Wand of Fireball and his Wand of Kiss of the 1st World. To those who know to use them.
