Going after the Kazavon's relics.

Seeing Sial disappear, Usaoti shrugs, he'd have been willing to fight, but this was fine with him too. Looking at the last two priests. "I'm assuming you two are headed with us." Turning towards Torsten, he nods towards the pit, "Let's finish this."

Anything we need to do before we take the leap?

You jump into the fog-filled shaft and fall ... and fall ... and fall. It feels like you fall for miles. Eventually, you land in an empty chamber. The air is cold and still, and the floor is polished to a reflective sheen. Above you, a roiling bank of glowing blue mist obscures the ceiling. A single stone door lies to the northeast.

The mist is 30ft above you. Map's also been updated.

Going after the Kazavon's relics.

Relieved they landed lightly, Usawoti looks from the polished floor to the glowing blue mist above. Resisting the urge to ask how they would return, he gestures towards the door in the end of one of the octagonal-rooms hallways. "It seems we are to head northeast." it looks south east on the map, did we fail a roll?

Moving to the single stone door, Usawoti investigates it, looking for a method to open it and any possible traps.

Torsten took a deep breath and nodded. It had been a leapt of faith, but it had paid off. "We push on then." Despite misconceptions about his people, Torsten tended to not drink all that often. It dulled the senses, and he reasoned that it was a waste of gold when the money could be better used when invested into his craft. "When this is done I could use a drink." He said, thinking to himself that such a luxury would be well deserved.

That would be a typo in the flavor text I copied from my PDF. Nice catch!

The door is heavy, but you're able to get it open with a bit of work. It leads to a long tunnel with walls that look moist but are strangely dry to the touch.

If you follow them, you'll come to a side tunnel, so let me know which way you're going.

Grand Lodge

Going after the Kazavon's relics.

Modding, "A drink would be fine." as he investigated the door he realized it was fairly heavy. Moving to the left, he nods towards the open area beside him. "Guess it's time to 'push on' literally as well as figuratively."

Once the heavy door was out of the way, Usawoti again picked up his hammer and move on until they reach where the tunnel splits. Frowning, "I hate not know what is behind me." He gestures towards the tunnel with his hammer. "Let's make sure it's clear before we head on." As he speaks, he begins to move down the side tunnel.

This corridor ends at a 15ft-wide shaft that plummets into the darkness. A faint warm breeze flows up from the pit, carrying with it strange mineral scents. What appears to be a set of three-foot-wide handholds runs down along the closest side of the shaft - a crude, primitive ladder, perhaps, but judging by the length between holds, one sized for a creature almost three times as large as a man.

The shaft is over 500ft deep and descends into the Darklands.

Grand Lodge

Going after the Kazavon's relics.

Seeing the very deep shaft, Usawoti nods back the way they came. "Let us explore the rest of this level before we dive deeper into the darkness." Turning, he heads back the way they came, to take the 'other' fork in the road.

Torsten nodded. He could feel it in his bones that they were approaching the darklands. It was a place he had always wanted to see, but not like this. With almost a sense of relief he followed behind Usawoti.

The rank odor of decay, filth, and wet fur clings to this cool chamber with a palpable tenacity. The chamber is an immense, 20ft-high cavern that fades into the dark to the north. A wide rocky shelf sits in the southern portion of the cavern, and upon this shelf are four crude, domed hovels, each nearly 20ft tall and built from rough stone blocks mortared together with a nasty mix of mud, hair, and assorted debris. Each stone hovel has a large arched opening into its darkened interior. To the east, a silent lake of black water stretches into the distance. Few ripples disturb its surface, giving it the appearance at times of a massive sheet of polished obsidian. Far out in the water to the northeast, a single point of light glows just above the surface, a bright star with a radiance that illuminates several stony islands about 70ft out in the lake, though the source of the glow isn't discernible from shore.

Each of the hovels has a resident inside: an immense four-armed menace with a tooth-filled vertically-aligned mouth. (if you can't see the images on the map, they look similar to the demogorgon from Stranger Things)

Perhaps the Gugs believed that the unarmored dwarf would be an easy target. While he found it hard to read the expressions on his face, he believed that he saw something like surprise when their claws only managed to draw blood and naught else. Given their predilection for using their reach, Torsten sought to grab hold of one of their offending limbs so that he could pull the creature into arm's reach.

Torsten was bleeding, but the wounds were not deep enough to stop him. He thought back to just the last day. He and Usawoti had killed a dragon and (temporarily) destroyed a demiliche. The thought of it still being 'around' and ready to come back filled him with dread. They had to destroy it as quickly as they could, lest it return and finish devouring his soul. And these Gugs were in the way of that. He didn't really try to take either to the ground, rather he sought to just punch his way through them, as if though they were an offending stone wall.

Looking from Torsten to the water and the glowing light, Usawoti shrugs. He didn't want to admit how little he'd actually swam. When he was a kid in the village they'd go fishing and swimming when they had the chance, but it had been years. "I can swim, it's been a bit. But it's like riding a horse, once you've learned you don't forget." Taking the Klar off he hangs it from it's belt hook, then returns the hammer to the 'frog' on the small of his back. Having freed his hands, he unconsciously reaches into his pocket where he keeps one of the potions of gaseous form, just in case.

AThletics + 12, may as well go for a swim and hope there's nothing grabbing for our toes.

The lake water is freezing and almost 200ft deep. As you begin your swim, you notice the glow from the island increase. It continues to grow brighter as you swim closer. Well before you reach its shores, though, Usawoti senses a presence rising from the depths of the lake. Torsten's angelic familiar recognizes it as a Pharmakos. When a worshiper of an evil god forsakes his faith, the deity being spurned sometimes takes note. In such a case, the betraying worshiper may not have the luxury of living the rest of his life and putting off divine punishment until some point after death. Sometimes, the god is so offended that the infidel is transformed into a pharmakos. While a pharmakos has much power, the metamorphosis into such a cursed creature is rarely one a worshiper seeks, for the pain and humiliation of the punishment is significant. That the altered worshiper can go on to serve the deity as a powerful guardian is of a secondary concern to the god in most cases, and regardless, when a pharmakos finally meets the end of its pain-filled life, then true divine punishment begins.

Torsten looked up at the monstrosity above him, and he felt a chill run down his spine. And it wasn't from the cold water. It was at moments like that in which fight or flight kicked in, and Torsten defaulted to the former. Acidic bile bellowed forth at the two of them, and Torsten dove underwater, causing it to pass harmlessly over him. He kicked out, shooting towards the creature like a dart. He then burst out of the water, his hand opened like a claw, as he sought to rip his fingers through the monster's body. What he needed was a good hold on it, so that he could use his arcane-fueled strength to rip it apart.

Question
Torsten can do bludgeoning, slashing, or piercing damage. Does it matter which type he does on this creature? If he knows from his above knowledge roll, then he will do the best damage type for the situation

Torsten’s attacks hit a snag. He was a proficient swimmer, but his experience in fighting underwater was purely theoretical. His blood flowed freely as the monstrosity ripped and feared. Within seconds both he and the monster were heavily wounded, and he was finding it hard to even stay afloat, let alone to fight effectively. Without thinking he took a deep breath, causing him to breathe in the frigid water. The dwarf’s eyes watered as he broke down into a coughing fit. His ‘attacks’ were merely wild thrashings as he tried to stay afloat and to push back the giant.

Only one of Torsten's attacks connect with the monster, but it creates an opening that Usawoti takes full advantage of. His destructive blast disembowles the pharmakos, ending its threat.

Spitting out water as his friend turns and gives him a thumbs up, Usawoti continues swimming towards the island.

Setting foot on the rocky islet, you quickly find the source of the light: a bastard sword embedded in the stone. It's easily pulled free - almost as if it wants to be removed. The blade matches the description of Serithtial except for one major flaw: the blade is cracked to the point of unusability. Before it can be used to its full potential, it will need to be reforged....

Currently, Serititial is a MW bastard sword that glows with a continual flame. It has the broken quality. The glow can be extinguished or ignited as a move action. Although made of steel, Serithtial overcomes damage reduction as if it is both cold iron and silver.

Just some fluff as I try to wrap my head around leveling up.

Shaking himself as the move up onto the Island, Usawoti pauses looking towards the sword embedded in the stone. He'd heard children's stories about such things, but never thought he'd actually see something like it. Wondering aloud he looks towards Torsten, "Do you think it is a test of strength or worthiness?" As he looked at the blade he gestures towards it, "Go ahead, Torsten, if either of us are worthy it would be you."

Torsten broke out in a laugh. ”Me?!” He shook his head. ”Nay…this castle showed me different.” He added with a rueful smile. ”It humbled me. I walked through a door easily that was warded against those pure of heart.” He said. ”A door ye couldn’t pass at all. A door that the torture worshipers waltzed through. And this castle…” He looked at the sword. He saw himself in that broken blade. A weapon filled with power, that needed the help of others to be whole again. ”The sword is yours. If there was any test in this castle, ye were the one who passed it.” He said with finality in his voice. ”We will take it to me parents to reforge it. It be the Clan trade. But when it be fixed, ye will be the one to wield it. So take it, and I will do all in me power to support and protect ye as ye wield this blade and do what ye were both made to do.”

Blinking, Usawoti stands and looks at Torsten, considering what his friend says. Shaking his head, he wants to argue, but, knowing Torsten, he knew the dwarf was the very definition of stubborn. Breathing a sigh, he reaches for the sword. Pulling it out delicately he looked at the broken blade. Holding it awkwardly he adds, "Even if your parents can reforge it, I'm not sure I can use it." He shrugs, "Maybe with two hands." Shaking his head, he tucks it in his magical pack. Gesturing towards the dark cold water, "Shall we swim back?"

"Aye, we swim back, Laori fixes me up as best she can, and then we take out the last spirit anchor. Then we head back to the city, destroy the liche, and go to me parents." Of that, there was complete certainty in his voice.

Sorry thought I posted

Nodding in agreement with Torsten, Usawoti begins to move towards the water. Hearing the tone of Torsten's voice Usawoti puases, then adds, "I'm sure they will be able to help us." He then begins to swim back across the water to find the last spirit anchor.

You find the final spirit anchor at the top of a tall, hollow tower. A full 40ft overhead, an opening at the tower's peak lets in light, as do the arrow slits set into the walls, yet nothing seems capable of dispelling the gloom of ancient evil that looms here. A shallow pool of stagnant water from past rains has formed in the center of a floor that is largely empty of furnishings. Near the far wall slumps a wide bed swathed in rotten and moldy bedclothes. The bed hangs a few feet off the floor, supported at its corners by chains hanging from a series of iron support beams above. To the side, a large gilt throne stands upon a short dais before a series of manacles inset into the floor. A nearby fire grate, long cold, holds a collection of branding irons and other torturer's tools. A series of alcoves climbs the walls of this tower in an ascending spiral. Within each stands a statuette, art object, or polished skull.

A small host of devils resides in the tower - mostly imps, but there's also a pair of barbed devils and a single ashmede.

Is there anyone or anything chained to the throne?

Seeing the devilish creatures, Usawoti asks Torsten, "Do you know anything about these things?" As he does so, he lifts his hammer and the bone ring. Deciding to try some of his newest magic, he commands the ring. Casting one of the new spells he learned, "ദൈവിക ശക്തി" He watches to see if the Divine force has any effect.

Is the DC character level (14) plus casting stat(6)? that feels low. Or is it 10 plus half the character level plus casting stat?

@Usawoti: There is nothing chained to the throne. Your sphere DC, like all abilities, is 10 + 1/2 caster level + casting modifier.

Usawoti Spell Resistance (hamatulas): 2d20 + 14 ⇒ (12, 19) + 14 = 45

The imps shriek in pain as Usawoti's spell causes them to begin bleeding from their eardrums. The barbed devils manage to resist, and the ashmede's defenses prove to be too strong.

The imps vanish from sight - presumably they've turned invisible. The barbed devils charge toward you as the ashmede fires an arcing bolt of lightning from its elevated position.

I still need to roll attacks for the barbed devils. Torsten, since the ashmede is airborne and, therefore, out of melee range, would you like to attack a barbed devil instead? We'd use your existing rolls.

So does the fate sphere make Usawoti's attacks 'good'?

Knowing his friend would deal with the other devil quickly, Usawoti focuses on the flying Ashmede. Lifting the bone ring, he commands it, "വിനാശകരമായ സ്ഫോടനം സ്പെൽ പോയിന്റ്" He spends some of his magical energy to make the blast more deadly.

@Torsten: That's correct. At your current level, Deeper Healing +2 Restore talents would cure 3d8+42
@Usawoti: It doesn't, unfortunately. That sort of thing is the domain of the Enhancement sphere (which Torsten's very invested in).

Piercing Damage (torsten): 3d8 + 18 - 9 ⇒ (8, 1, 1) + 18 - 9 = 19 (already factored in your DR)
Usawoti Spell Resistance DC 23: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (15) + 14 = 29
Torsten dispatches the other barbed devil as Usawoti begins blasting the ashmede. It responds by attempting to remove the moisture from your bodies.
Damage (both of you): 16d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 4, 4, 5, 4, 3, 2, 4, 2, 6, 1, 5, 2, 5, 3) = 54 (Fortitude DC 21 halves)

Ashmede Devil: 56pts damage

Wounds (44) HP (200) AC (31/21/27, +4 Shield,) DR/5 (Adamantine/Chaos) Saves (32*/23/26, +3 Hardy, +2 vs Enchantment, +3 vs life sphere) Spell Points (22/42) MF (0/9) EW (0/2) IW (1/1) ToD (2/2) CMD (47, 51 vs trip/repo ) Init (+8) Percp (+21, +2 vs stone) Glove (2/4) Current Buffs (Agile, Acetic Control, Armored Aegis, Energy Enchanement, Lifesense) Movement Speed (30ft)

Fort: 1d20 + 19 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 19 + 3 = 31
Healing: 3d8 + 42 ⇒ (6, 4, 5) + 42 = 57
Wounds: 8 + 19 + 27 - 57 = -3 Full wounds

Once more Torsten appeared to be torn to shreds. Flaps of skin hung from his arms, leaving bones visible beneath. Arcane power infused him, dragging the water from his body, momentarily giving him the appearance of a mummified dwarf. But it was just for a moment, as his tattoos healed the damage as quickly as it came. Within seconds he was whole again.

”That fooking hurts!” He complained. ”Blast it pieces, lad.”
