John Billings Bryant |

Huzzah! Thank you, GM, for the pick, I'm extremely excited to be a part of this. I'm uncertain if you meant to introduce our characters or ourselves, so I'll do little of both.
John Billings Bryant is a handsome and friendly Londoner in his mid to late twenties. A successful barrister from an upper middle class family, he went to boarding school with many aristocrats and is accustomed to a comfortable life. He seems like a rather enticing prospect for any young woman of common birth, although he has yet to make advances towards any. Those with an attentive eye may note hints of a certain melancholy beneath his friendly smile, and he nearly always looks as though he could have done with just a bit more sleep. Mechanically, I can offer some healing and currently have some damage dealing and a little bit of control for in combat. I'm also pretty competent as a 'face' (+12 bluff and diplomacy).
Giant Halfling is a longtime roleplayer who's rather reluctant to give out much personal information online. I started playing Pathfinder while it was in beta and have more experience with PbP than my profile might indicate (I was active on these forums years ago and had to step away for a while due to RL issues; this is a new profile created when I was finally able to return). I have kids in school (which has been interesting with all the pandemic closures) and a job with irregular hours, but I check my games fairly often from my phone, and do a lot of posting from it whenever I have time. Because of that, my posts can sometimes be a little bit on the shorter side (and I tend to get ninja'd more than I'd prefer) but the upside is that I can usually respond fairly quickly if anyone is waiting on me.

Lucia Wriothesly |

Hello everyone, and thank you OS for picking me!
I like your dual introduction, JBB, so I'll copy you.
Lucia Wriothesly ("Risley") is the daughter of a senior clergyman (or priest) in the church of England. Her position as his daughter brought her into contact with the scions of the nobility, and she was their alibi for some more questionable activities involving seances and the occult. Sadly, one of those seances actually did make contact with something - something that was powerful enough to wipe the minds of most of the group apart from her, although Lucia isn't sure why she was spared (mechanically, she has the Iron Will feat and a very high Wisdom). The aftermath of that scandal has left her friendless (and effectively parent-less) and she has spent the last few years working among the poorest of the poor in the East London missions.
Mechanically, she has a LOT of skills as well as some combat ability, although no sneak attack.
Sarah B shares GH's reluctance to give out personal information online. I have been playing Pathfinder on these forums for about six months, but I have been playing roleplay games for about ten years. I work in a lab normally, but with the coronavirus outbreak my workload has been slightly patchy: I'm either left with lots of free time, or else I'm frantically stuck in the lab trying to get through all my experiments before my time slot expires.

William Westford |

An echoing "Huzzah!" from me. Finger crossing apparently works. I'll do the same as JBB.
William is a former teacher from a once prominent family. He has only recently reentered society after a prolonged seclusion in his family's home and is not quite comfortable being near people (Basically, how we'll all act once COVID is finally over). William does not necessarily brood, but he is haunted by the things in the dark and does not see much good in the world. He often refuses to accept even so much as a cup of tea from those who he considers close friends, preferring to bring his own utensils and dishes.
Mechanically, William faces enemies head on with a blade and a shield with his family's ancestral crest rubbed mostly away. He knows a lot about...a lot, but his magical capabilities are fairly self buffing.
Jagael is a mid thirties stay-at-home dad (formerly a video editor and marketing writer) who uses tabletop to stay sane. I joined a group of old college friends for a weekly 3.5/PF game after my oldest was born 4 years ago so I could still converse with adults. I fell in love with this hobby and sought out pbp to sate my need for more stories.
I do most of my gaming over on MW, mainly due to GM ghosting on my first three Paizo forum games, but I came back on a whim and have had a good experience this time.
I think I mentioned this in the recruitment thread, but I'm also a bit of an Anglophile. I was born in a town outside London, but have been stateside most of my life. I've tried to keep up-to-date on current events (been a bit lax on that for awhile...since Brexit, I think) and entertainment as well as reading about British history.

Scarlet Grey |

Thank you for the acceptance Raven Nevermore. As requested:
All the information concerning her listed below is well known for anyone who gossips or reads the papers.
Scarlet Grey is the daughter of an officer. She is a proficient fencer, and it is one of her many passions. Her estate has been entailed away from her family to her uncle at the passing of her father and is currently not "out". None of these are negatives due to her good reputation. She is expected to be having her debutante ball before the queen (being the daughter of an officer this was common) sometime at the end of the year. She is highly educated and is projected to be a good match for anyone interested.
She is your typical wealthy citizen during that period--seeking to impress those families she is connected to and trying not to ruin her chances for a wedding (as that was pretty much the importance of life for a woman then).
Scarlet is unique in that she has been titled "Lady Carver" by the newspapers after her defeat of a cult via the sword. It seems she had found out their secrets and made sure the police were onto them. As a result, those not sent to jail found themselves in her home one night to murder her. She fought them off and did so wearing a nice dress and looking very lady-like. Thus the unofficial title.
Mechanically, Scarlet is a highly functional fighter and quite skilled as well. Intensely wise and attentive to her surroundings. Feel free to peruse her character sheet and see her character image to see essentially what she looks like (maybe a slight bit less gothic lol, but I thought it a great picture for this campaign).
Smooshiebanana is a banana that was once whole and full-bodied, but now is a crushed pile of banana goop. Now, due to the flattened nature of self, this banana had to get into other occupations and paths than your average bananas (which may be considered a good thing). Dropshipping, eCommerce, stocks/trades, investments are current passions. Fields of study have been history, nursing, chemistry, anatomy, nutrition, and more. Industry experience would be food production, project management, biochemistry and hospital work. So this banana has really scaled many things. As for roleplaying experience, 1998 the banana's start date and they've been playing Pathfinder for a while now. Lots of free time in between tasks to check the boards and a great amount of online experience in roleplaying here. This banana is up at all hours of the day and night, sleeping in random moments, so it is as likely to expect a reply at 3am as it is at 12pm.

Javell DeLeon |

Hello all! And thanks for the selection, Raven! Man I appreciate it.
I'm going to start with myself. I've been playing D&D since I was... like 14 I think. I started with AD&D. I am now 47. (My gosh that feels like forever. :P) But there was about a 10 year hiatus due to RL circumstances. I've gone from AD&D to 2nd Edition, to 3.0, 3.5, and now Pathfinder. It's the only role-playing game I play. I just have no desire(or the energy) to learn 1000 others systems. Or even 1 as far as that goes. This one is fun enough for me. :) (I'm trying to catch on to PF2 but it's proving to be somewhat of a bear for me).
Anyway, I am a UPS man. So it has officially been Christmas time(AGAIN) for us for over 2 months now and I'm wondering if there's an actual end. Yeah we're getting the crap kicked out of us. I just went back today after vacation and man it hasn't changed a drop. Now having said that, I am truly thankful I'm working because I know there are about a billion folks who absolutely need the work.
Moving on to Jakob(pronounced YAH-kob), his mother is Danish and his father is British. And that's all I'm going to give you. The rest you're going to have to find out in-game if you so desire. ;)
And for the record, I have not read any of your stories. As in, the ones you've put in this discussion thread or in your character's profile. The reason I don't do that is because I like to find such things out in-game. It's like, if I were to meet any of you tomorrow, I wouldn't know a thing about you. I'd actually have to get to know you to figure all this out. I like to keep it "real" in that regard. Because, ultimately, I just find it more enjoyable. And for the record, it's simply a personal preference and nothing more. :)
Although I did read what y'all wrote about yourselves. That was interesting to read. Man you folks do some big time, high tech stuff. All I do is deliver boxes. :P
And while I may not be an Anglophile like William, I'm a big time fan of British film of whatever kind. Dr. Who, Mr. Bean, Keeping up Appearances, Fawlty Towers, Black Adder, a multitude of movies, so on and so forth. All great stuff. I've got to give credit to my wife for that. If we not have married, I'd probably would've missed out on such greatness. :)
@John Billings: I've got a question for you, bud. And if you prefer not to answer then I totally respect that. It's simply out of curiosity that I ask and I would totally understand if you've no desire to speak on it.
What was you're previous profile before Giant Halfling?
I ask because I've been on these boards around 10/11 years(I'm gonna have to check that one of these days) and I was just wondering if I might have seen you around previously.

John Billings Bryant |

Does Decimus/Peter definitely know he’s in? He reacted in the recruitment thread like he did but then never checked in here?
edit: @Javell- I’d rather not say. I was running a couple of games and I still feel bad about having to let them die. Fwiw, I don’t recognize your name.

Scarlet Grey |

Does Decimus/Peter definitely know he’s in? He reacted in the recruitment thread like he did but then never checked in here?
Time will tell, I suppose.
Lucia, would you like Scarlet to be connected somehow to your character? It would not be uncommon for a high-class family to be known to Scarlet and to be acquaintances. I read Lucia fell on hard times. Despite this, it is Scarlet's duty to provide, so Lucia may know her in whichever connection you desire, or none at all. I leave it in your hands. Scarlet is quite charitable at times.

Lucia Wriothesly |

And for the record, I have not read any of your stories. As in, the ones you've put in this discussion thread or in your character's profile. The reason I don't do that is because I like to find such things out in-game. It's like, if I were to meet any of you tomorrow, I wouldn't know a thing about you. I'd actually have to get to know you to figure all this out. I like to keep it "real" in that regard. Because, ultimately, I just find it more enjoyable. And for the record, it's simply a personal preference and nothing more. :)
That's fine, but it does mean that you're potentially missing out on the option of setting "hooks" (I can't think of a better word, but hopefully you get what I mean) in your posts for other characters to work from. Entirely your call, though.
Scarlet - it's entirely possible our characters would have known each other when Lucia was moving in those circles. It looks like Scarlet is a rationalist, of sorts, so she probably wouldn't have attended any of the seances which she might have been invited to. She might have heard rumours of something going wrong and the aftermath.
It seems unlikely that they would have stayed in touch after that, unless Scarlet has particular reason to go to the East End of London. Given that she seems to be of high birth, I can't think of a reason she would do that. If she did, she would stand out a LOT and Lucia would almost certainly have heard about it.
Let me know what you think.

Scarlet Grey |

Lucia, I could see the rumors coming to her. She has friends and acquaintances who love to gossip at her. She is definitely a rationalist and the thought of taking part in a seance would have been kindly rejected; not only from the realist part, but from her religious stances. While it seems most of you didn't previously believe in darker things in the world, she does, as you will see.
It wasn't uncommon for the wealthy to use their position of high power to reach out and help the poor or those of the working class. While some see it as a chance to educate, Scarlet does it out of humility; not seeing herself as better than anyone else. She oftentimes will dress down to simple clothes on her excursions to such locations. If she had heard that a friend she knew young in life (perhaps not as they aged) fell on hard times, then she would do her diligence and check up on Lucia; if she could find her without getting mugged...which could be an interesting way in which they reconnected??

John Billings Bryant |

John gets invited to a fair number of aristocratic gatherings, despite being a commoner, because of the contacts he made at Harrow (and his charming/affable personality). He also attends the theatre and musical performances periodically. So, any of you who grew up noble and/or wealthy could know me. If anyone wants to have met before just let me know?
(Also, I PMed Peter, so hopefully he’ll check in soon.)

Scarlet Grey |

John Billings Bryant |

William Westford |

Not sure of the ages of John/Peter/Javell, but William is in his mid to late 30s. If any of the three are in their 20s and want to connect backstories, William could have been their Upper School instructor.

John Billings Bryant |

I know we’re going to play it loose with historicity, but I think the 3-tier school model came into use in the UK in the 1950s? I was basing my background off an older model where kids are schooled at home until around 10 and then go to school... in my case that meant a governess as a child and then a fairly well established boarding school in London (Harrow) when I was old enough. IIRC, your school was fairly small and in the country, so that wouldn’t work for me, although I am the right age. It might work with Jakob or Peter though?

William Westford |

You are correct, I was just using Upper School to designate age in this case.
The location of the school wasn't actually set in my background, but I envisioned it at least within a day's journey of London if not in the city itself.

Peter Caffrey |

Apologies for the delay in posting here. Yesterday could have gone more smoothly.
Peter Caffrey is a 33-year old Irishman. Long black hair that is getting grey-streaked. His clothes are plain style and material intended for a lot of walking. Fairly tight knee breeches, a linen shirt, knitted wool stockings, a cloak, a tall top hat made of felt, and heavy shoes. His dark brown eyes are attentive. He absorbs a great deal of information with a quick glance. He has a rudimentary formal education but is something of a autodidact, enhanced by repeated mysterious encounters and conversing with large numbers of people.
Mechanically, lots of skills including social ones like diplomacy. No animal companion but some (relatively) subtle spells.
Decimus Observet is a long-time roleplayer, about twenty years in. D&D from 2-5e, Pathfinder, Cyberpunk, Vampire: the Masquerade, and numerous 40k rpgs like Dark Heresy as a shortlist. I started on Paizo in 2017 and usually get to post in all of my campaigns daily, either from phone or desktop.
Edit: I forgot to say something about myself besides roleplaying, which I did intend to! I write for a living and live in Galway in Ireland.

John Billings Bryant |

@William- Harrow is an actual RL school, so I don’t know if that would effect your plans re: the headmaster or whatever, but if you want to have taught there at some point a connection is certainly possible? I’m also not sure if they really had substitute teachers at the time but another possibility might be that your first year out of university you filled in for a sick/injured teacher at Harrow before accepting a permanent position elsewhere, I could have had you that year?
@Peter- welcome!

William Westford |

Ha, this is one of those times where PF knowledge is blinding. I saw Harrow and connected it mentally with Harrow decks from Golarion rather than the location/school (I'm GMing The Harrowing module over on MW so my mind has been on those cards a lot). I thought your references before were to a fortune teller.
Depending on how accurately we want to portray England and actual people up to this point, I'm fine placing Harrow as William's former employer and either changing the headmaster he served under or changing Harrow's actual former headmaster at that time.

Peter Caffrey |

I'm wondering if any of the rest of the party would have had reason to visit Ireland. Until recently, Peter was wandering about that island and only recently departed for Great Britain.
That said, he could have easily encountered one or more of the others on his travels once on the island.

Scarlet Grey |

Interesting note: This past year, Scarlet has fought the young Mr. Winston Churchill, the 1896 Public school champion, and he absolutely defeated her (and boasted about it, saying it wasn't, "because she was a woman, but because he was an invincible fighter lol").

John Billings Bryant |

@William- that sounds like something the GM would have to weigh in on? I have no objection if you two want to go that direction.
@Peter- I'm guessing that, at least upon your initial arrival, we probably wouldn't be running in the same social circles at all? I am a lawyer though, and I do speak Irish (if that makes an difference to you), so if you've needed any legal help for any reason we might have met through that?
@Scarlet- my school was a boys boarding school, so if we were childhood friends it would have to have been before I was 10 (I'm 26 now). Maybe more recent acquaintances would be easier? My family is connected to the banking world, so it wouldn't be surprising if we've met at parties and the like, even though neither of our families are bankers directly.

Scarlet Grey |

Interesting Note: Because women were being encouraged by the Queen herself in education, in her later years, Victoria was actually very strict on what it meant to be presented at court. For that reason, girls during her younger years were getting married in their 14's-18's, but during the years of our gameplay, she was very strict, and it wasn't abnormal to see women getting married even up into their mid-20s! 28 was sort of the "loser" cap. :P

John Billings Bryant |

John Bryant is a handsome man with hazel eyes, well-coiffed chestnut hair, and pleasant features. He immediately gives the impression of being a friendly man, despite always seeming as if he hadn't got quite enough sleep the night before. He dresses in whichever suits are most in fashion at any time, though he always favors fabrics in blacks and browns when available. He stands nearly six feet tall with a lean, athletic build and often draws attention when he enters a room.
John is a bit of a head turner, yes (being handsome, fashionable, and charming). And with +12 diplomacy he can show up and just take 10 with everyone at a party and make a pretty big impression. He’s much more guarded than he used to be, but he’s still friendly and many woman have mistaken that friendliness for flirtation (or perhaps hoped it was).
I believe, from your last post, that you must be 21 now, and back in London for 9 years? That would be plenty of time for us to have run into each other. And, if you’re not out in society yet, we also could have met a dinner party or something? Maybe your father is friends with my father’s banking partner? Or it could even be that one of your uncles or older cousins is his partner? If that we’re the case it’s possible that we could have been at several smaller gatherings together? I don’t want to go overboard with it, but that does seem like it could potentially be a natural, believable connection?

Scarlet Grey |

Javell DeLeon |

@Scarlet: Lol! I love it. That's awesome.
@Decimus Observet: Ireland huh? Well that's cool. You're the first person on these boards that I've seen from there. I've always wanted to travel there. It just looks so fantastic from the pictures I've seen.
@William: I've got Jakob at 30, 31ish. Somewhere around there.

John Billings Bryant |

@Peter- I was in Galway five years ago. Lovely place.

Lucia Wriothesly |

That's a lot of posts for me to catch up on! I think I'm probably on different time zone from some of you.
Scarlet: that works for me. I think the two of them knew each other when younger but when Lucia fell in with a fast set, Scarlet kept her distance. She has heard some rumours of what happens and knows that Lucia effectively exiled herself to the East London missions and resolves to look her up. What do you think?
On the subject of authenticity, which has been mentioned: in our world, Cambridge doesn't have a cathedral, so Lucia's father could never be Dean of it. I think we get to play fast and loose with some of the facts if it suits the game.
John: it seems likely you would have known at least some of the people Lucia did, like the Duke of Westminster's niece, who had such a tragic bout of ill health and isn't on the scene any more.
Peter: Galway is such a lovely place! I'm envious of you getting to live there.
I'm looking forward to this, I think it's going to be fun.

Scarlet Grey |

Lucia: Haha, yeah, we talked a lot. Sorry about that :P You don't need to read them all, unless you want to.
I also wasn't sure where you wanted to start your character out. If you have visions of her still being in her current occupation, then great. If you were more fluid in your options, however, then Scarlet may have a job offer for her.
If Scarlet would pick up on the fact that Lucia would be interested, Lucia could be hired by her to be her Lady's Maid and you could start the game in that role instead of her current occupation. Someone to live in Scarlet's home and be provided for by her. Not as the governess mind you, but someone to do Scarlet's hair, make sure she is well functioning, but mostly as someone there to talk to that she could get along with. If Scarlet would pick up on the fact that that would be demeaning for Lucia to take part in, then she wouldn't offer.

John Billings Bryant |

Javell DeLeon |

For the record, I've got no shot at being historically accurate about England. What little I do know - and that's very little - I've learned from their films. (I told you it was very little) :P
@Lucia: I'm in CST if that helps you get a better picture.

The Raven Nevermore |

Good morning, one and all. To see the discussion thread erupt in the past 36 hours brings me immense joy. I am hoping we have assembled a truly memorable group of both characters and players.
Please continue to work out any pre-existing character connections you would like to establish.
a brief note on mechanics
I really liked how Scarlet Grey spoilered her skills in her Avatar's notes. If everyone could have their basic stats (HP, AC, saves, Perception, Init, effects) always displayed, with a spoiler with all of their skills below it, that would be great. This will definitely be a skill heavy game, and do not hesitate to roll a skill check if you think it might be applicable in a situation or action.
a bit about Oblivion's Scion / The Raven Nevermore
I have been gaming for over 25 years, starting with my introduction through AD&D 2nd edition in the early 90’s. Though medieval fantasy and D&D have always been a core part of my gaming experience, my experience has diversified across multiple systems and genres over the years. I have always had a love of gothic horror and have run both a d20 Modern and a Vampire: the Masquerade in a Victorian setting in a tabletop setting in the past.
I am a late 30-something special education teacher turned sommelier and restaurant manager. I am married to an amazing woman who is a nurse practitioner, and we currently share our home with 'the princess, the wolf, and the troll'. Oh, there may a spawn of some kind currently growing within my wife's body...
The Princess Reeses Peanut Buttercup - LG Tiny Female Animal (Cat, Calico) - adopted at 7 weeks old, the 'Peanut' became my wife's cuddling companion while she read The Princess Bride, following the adventures of Wesley and Princess 'Buttercup'. She is a kindly, affectionate furball who is both delicate and proper in her conduct. Over the years she has come to appreciate the Troll for his abilities, even if he annoys her at times. As for the Wolf, they tolerate each other, but both claim my wife as "their mom first".
The Wolf Willow Mae - CG Small Female Animal (Dog, Malamute) - a rescue from a horrific hoarding case, Willow is a loving sweetheart who inadvertently gained my mother's middle name as an added moniker during her many scoldings (usually for trying to get human food and always in jest, we love our fluffy mess). Though now well into her adult years, her growth was stunted while a puppy during the hoarding (lack of food = lack of growth), and she remains the size of a 6-8 month old malamute (still a respectable 45 lbs). She thinks all humans are her friend, and given her appearance (Malamute in Snow) and affable nature, most generally are.
The Troll Blinky Allan Poe - CN Tiny Male Outsider (Extraplanar, Cat, Bombay) - adopted from a former employee of mine on Halloween day, this jet black cat with golden-green eyes has a 6 ft verticle jump and even in a happy jog bell collars do not jiggle on his neck. Like Poe's Pluto, he does have a few white hairs on his chest, and shortly after I brought him home he got an infection in one eye (it quickly cleared up - no eye lost). A consummate escape artist, he has entered into an unlikely pact of service to the Princess to defend her lofty realm (our second floor) from the Wolf that lives down below (on the first floor). And yes, this 12 lb beast has repeatedly defeated the wolf that is 4 times his size.
Several years ago I relocated for my marriage, and though I have still managed to game some with my old group via Skype, I miss having a more regular gaming experience. My wife has been encouraging me to delve back into the hobbies I enjoy, and so I find myself here on these forums. I did a good deal of play-by-post back in the day on other sites (late 2nd ed, early 3rd ed), and feel it works well for story driven games. I take great joy in crafting an adventure, then placing it into the hands of a willing party and watching it evolve (often in some most unexpected ways).
I will start the discussion regarding gear and wealth shortly.
EDIT THE GAMEPLAY THREAD IS UP! PLEASE DOT IN FOR EASE OF ACCESS TO THE CAMPAIGN.

John Billings Bryant |

In case anyone is unaware, you can post a dot in gameplay and then delete the post and it will still add the game to your campaign tab (without cluttering the gameplay thread with dots). edit: @Scarlet- that wasn't directed at you, you hadn't posted yet when I started writing this post on my phone!
Also, to divulge a little more personal info... I'm at GMT -4 or -5, depening on the time of year. I began playing D&D before there were numbered editions and since then have played games in a number of systems, including GURPS, WhiteWolf/StoryTeller, Palladium, and the original Star Wars roleplaying game. I don't get to do really any TT gaming anymore, so PbP has become my outlet for getting my geek fix.

Peter Caffrey |

@Scarlet: Depending on the age of Scarlet's governess, she could be an aunt or a grand-aunt of Peter's.
@John: The social circles are different but Peter would know enough to realise that having legal counsel accessible would be a boon. So he might sound out his relatives or the local Irish for advice on that matter, and they could point him to John?
@Javell: Yeah, not a lot about it seems. Only one other Irish member here that I know of.
@Lucia: Well, it does offer me the opportunity to give travel advice. :)
@The Raven Nevermore: Will do!
@All: Galway is a great place to visit and live in. The weather and the winters can be a bit grim though! Ireland is currently in the summer side of daylight savings time, so it's 22:51 here right now.
Ireland uses Irish Standard Time (IST, UTC+01:00; Irish: Am Caighdeánach Éireannach) in the summer months and Greenwich Mean Time (UTC+00:00; Meán-Am Greenwich) in the winter period.

Javell DeLeon |

@Raven: Is it possible to use my Martial Flexibility ability to give myself Armor Proficiency(Med) to help my AC? Because without armor he is going to need it, trust me. "Or this is going to be a real short trip." :P (Anybody? Anybody? If you care to try I'm curious if any of you can get where this is from WITHOUT googling it.) ;)
And The Princess Bride is absolutely fantastic! Such a great movie. If any of you haven't seen it, highly recommend it.
@Decimus: You're sitting at 11pm right now? Daaaang. It's like bed time for you. I'm at 5pm right now myself. The sun still up and it's hot.

John Billings Bryant |

@Jakob- I believe that’s Han Solo remarking on the significance of Obi Wan having successfully disabled the Death Star tractor beam in A New Hope?

John Billings Bryant |

For the record, when I said “as you wish” in the recruitment thread I was quoting Boba Fett from Empire Strikes Back, not the Princess Bride (although I wholeheartedly agree that the latter is an absolutely fantastic movie).

William Westford |

@Raven Will update my skills onto the sheet tomorrow. It's 1:45am for me (GMT-4), and I am exhausted.
@All This is already shaping up to be one of the best groups I've been a part of. Really looking forward to this game!

Lucia Wriothesly |

I like the thought, but Lucia doesn't actually have the skillset to be a lady's maid: she isn't of noble birth, but she was born into the upper-middle classes and would have had servants. She is just about getting the hang of managing without them and doing her own hair, among the other skills she is currently picking up.
Also, although she might not admit it, she is getting very into the Catholic ideas of penance: she is very aware that what she did was wrong on some fundamental level and she is doing what she can to make up for it. She has come to find that she rather likes working at the mission. Some of the work is grim and the stories she hears are cruder than she is used to, but she is doing some good there.
I'm sure penance isn;t exclusively a Catholic thing, but my knowledge of church of England comes from the Barchester Chronicles (which I highly recommend), where any talk of God or sin or evil is regarded as extremely poor taste and will definitely halt your social advancement :)
That works for me. When they do meet, they'll probably find they know a lot of people in common.
I think Princess Bride is a boy's movie. I've watched it, and it was fun, but so many guys I know seem to be able to quote it word for word and I just don't have that. It's like the guys who insist that Die Hard is a Christmas movie.

John Billings Bryant |

Die Hard is a Christmas movie... it’s about an estranged couple reconnecting at a stressful office Christmas party; their family is reunited in time for the holiday. It’s Home Alone, for adults. This is meant in jest, though I must confess I made a more compelling argument than I expected to. Perhaps I’m closer to being one of those guys than I thought...
