"I've been in places like that, Thalasi," says Peregrine, her voice suddenly harsh. "They usually had slaves for staff, though, or near enough not to matter. You've been in some interesting sorts of inns, for a White Robe elf."
Kalisuel |
Sorry Thalasi. Kali'll warm up to you soon enough, maybe. Kinda depends on how nice he can be.
Hey, Peri? Did you mean Bander?
Kali's face hardens at Thalasi's question as she ignore's Bander's rambling for now.
"You've never been so hungry you were willing to do almost anything for food, have you," she states more than asks.
Peregrine Stoup |
I did not mean Bander, no.
The Red Robe gives a sideways gesture at Kali’s words as if to say, “see?”
EltonJ |
In Kali's defense, they'd be functionally the same in her line of work.

"Look. There. A place we can get to shore." He points to a place where getting off the boat would be safe.
Do you mean a place we could get the boat to shore safely or a wooden dock? Like a built structure or just the shore?
Na'shok |
"I think if Maddok and Na'shok agree, we should go to Que-kiri. I've never been there, so hopefully I'll get to add some tales to my collection!"
The worg looks to Slam. "We've got a contract with the ogre... or we're workin' on one at least. We'll go wherever he needs to be."

It's a wooden dock, a built structure.
Kalisuel |
"Then I guess it's up to Slam where we go. He's the one with the quest after all!"
"We can put out a lot faster from a dock if we need to," Kali answers the kender's question. She joins Bander at the bow of the boat and tries to see if there's anything dangerous waiting for them.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29 Woo!
As she scans the shoreline, she finds herself too curious not to ask.
"Hey, Bander? Um... wh-what can you tell about me?"
If he starts to mention her ears, she'll put her hand over his mouth and signal for him to hush.

Slam |
Slam helps to guide the boat to the dock, and then once everyone is out of it, punches a hole into the side, and shoves the boat back into the water before saying "Let's go."
Kalisuel |

Oh this is gonna be fun. :D
"Oh, o-okay," She says, sounding relieved before the implications of what Bander had said hits her. "Uh, you didn't really think I was asking to, um, y'know."
Kali's cheeks turn red as she looks away, clearly embarrassed. Her fingers begin to fiddle with the loose ends of the straps holding her gear on. She's grateful that the others seem to be paying attention elsewhere as she muddles right into one of the most awkward topics she can imagine.
Good grief. I'm a mess right now.
So much for the deposit
Kali hops out and starts to tie the boat off when Slam stops her and sinks it after everyone's off.
"Oh, uh, I guess that works, too. Which way are we heading," she asks as she falls in beside Slam.

If the pier is in good to moderate condition, and there's a watertight boat there, then the pier is seeing use, and someone lives nearby, in some shack or cabin or something. We would then either a) have to watch out for them, or b) be able to find shelter for the night.
If the pier is in good to moderate condition, but there's no boat there, then the pier is likely still seeing use, but the inhabitant(s) are away -- possibly across the lake in Solace, likely for the night, since there's no light or anything (AFAIK) to help guide them back to the pier. The shack or cabin is probably still in good condition, and we might then be able to find it and use it for shelter.
If the pier is in bad condition, but there's a watertight boat there, then it's possible the pier is still seeing use, though probably not often. If the pier is in bad condition and there's no watertight boat there, then the place is in disuse. In either case, the existence of the pier suggests that there's is or was someone nearby to use it, which would imply a shack or a cabin -- one that might be in better shape than the pier, and capable of sheltering us for the night.
Let me know what's what!!
"Pier," Peregrine absently corrects Bander. "The dock is the water next to the pier where the boat goes." She shifts as best she can to keep the boat stable as Kalisuel clambers past Slam, Maddok, Na'shok, and Thalasi to get to the front of the boat and help Bander.
Thalasi, in turn, gets a warning look, one of those 'you can drop this now'; as if to punctuate her almost-glare, she says in fluid Elven, "Ahaṅkāra, udāratā ēbaṁ dānaśīlatā pā'ōẏā yāẏa samasta dauṛēra madhyē, byatirēkē'i."
Being in the back, Peregrine is one of the last (if not the last) to climb from the boat; she's about to follow Slam up the pier when he staves in the side of it and shoves it away from the pier. "Hey!!" she exclaims, outraged, looking after the boat, then twines her fingers in arcane movements as she speaks in a clear, firm voice, "دست مگس."
A ghostly hand, a mirror of her own right, appears before her, then swiftly surges out to grip the gunwale of the slowly-sinking boat; when a 'come hither' gesture fails to move the craft, she shoots Slam a dirty look -- then jumps in after the boat.
I'm presuming that the water here isn't particularly deep -- 4 or 5 feet -- and that if she can't wade, a Take 10 result of 13 will keep her moving and move the boat to shore.
It takes her a couple minutes or so to push the slowly-sinking boat ahead of her to the shore, where (hopefully) she'll have help turning it over to empty the water from it. "I'm not a thief," she says with some acidity, then moves up to the hole in the side, which she inspects. After giving Slam a scowl, the woman looks over at Bander and says, "Bander, did I see a trail? If so, can you, and you, Na'shok, if you're willing, follow it, see if it maybe leads to some sort of shelter we can use for the night?"
After suggesting the scouting trip, she returns her attention to the boat, and as her clothing dries out with magical swiftness over the course of a minute, she makes repeated gestures and chants of "اصلاح," and with the pieces still present, the boat repairs itself.
Straightening up, she shakes her head again at Slam, then says to Kali, "Can you conceal it here, so that it won't be readily seen, but found if someone comes close?"
Kalisuel |
Kali helps Peri with the boat as she pulls into shallower water and it begins to scrape the bottom. Seeing the wizardess casting a spell, Kali looks nervously up and down the road. The more time they spent in the open, the more likely it would be that they would be discovered. Sighing she turns to the boat. It isn't as if they would never have discovered this secret sooner or later. Hopefully she won't disappear now that she is grown.
"Here, let me help," she says before softly singing a series of notes.
So, there's a question of whether or not the boat can be fixed with a cantrip. It depends on if you count the planks that make it up or the boat as a whole as 1 object. Then there's the casting time of ten minutes. (Which I think it frankly ridiculous for what it does.) I'm hoping that Kali'll be able to help speed the process.
That said, I think even with the different method of casting, Peri would probably be able to tell what's going on since she's a trained wizard casting the exact same spell. Should make for some fun RP either way.

I don't think the road is close to the water, actually -- in the books they take an hour to chop their way several hundred yards through the underbrush ...
Repairs: 5d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 4, 3, 1) = 18
Peregrine only shakes her head slightly at the elf's arrogance, and goes about her work.

Q. Two questions -- is there another (watertight) boat at the pier, and what condition is the pier in?
A. There was another watertight boat at the pier. And the pier is in remarkable good condition. No draconians have used their breath on it.
Q. অহংকার, উদারতা এবং দানশীলতা পাওয়া যায় সমস্ত দৌড়ের মধ্যে, ব্যতিরেকেই। -- "Arrogance, avarice, and benevolence can be found in all races, excepting none." (I used Bengali, off Google Translate, for the 'Elvish'. If you have language preferences, EltonJ, I'd be happy to use those. ;)
A. I usually use Irish Gaelic, but I like beautiful scripts myself. You can continue to use Bengali. Although if a true elf was here with me . . . I think we'd all be surprised.
Q. I have to confess that from my point of view, destroying the boat turns this from borrowing it to stealing it, and Peregrine (at least) isn't willing to do that.
I'm presuming that the water here isn't particularly deep -- 4 or 5 feet -- and that if she can't wade, a Take 10 result of 13 will keep her moving and move the boat to shore.
A. It would be stealing the boat. As to why Slam punched a hole in it is against his character. Perhaps he was afraid. Anyhow, the water is wadeable. It's only three feet deep where you are.
Q. Again using Google Translate, this time Persian for Magius (the language of magic), the first one is Mage Hand, the second is Mending. If Mending doesn't work, she'll use Make Whole -- which, as a 'hedge witch', she has prepared. ;)
A. Make Whole is the right spell to use, here.

A. Yea, you right, should make for some fun RP. Although you will have to use a Spellcraft check to find out exactly what spell she's casting.

Thalasi's snide comment causes Kali's eye to twitch. She turns and, at a whim, whistles in a warbling fashion as she gestures with her fingers up. She realizes she's blowing her cover in a much more dramatic fashion, but it was worth it if it shut the wizard up.
So, from what I've read, there's not actually a save for a prestidigitation effect. If I'm wrong and there is, the DC is 12.
A gust of wind lifts Thalasi's hair and braids it into three uneven lengths that are so tight they stand out from his head. As the braids finish, a garish pattern of eye-searing pink, yellow, purple, green, and orange (think neon and dayglow colors) flows up to the ends of his hair.
Satisfied, she turns back to help and sees Peri's already finished.
"Oh, uh, yeah. I can hide it with some help form Maddok and Slam," she says as she catches Peri's question.
Survival (Camouflage the boat from the water but not those at the land end of the pier.): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
Slam |
Slam punched a hole in the boat to hide it. He's trying to obscure their tracks as much as possible and sinking the boat is a good way to do so.
Slam |
"Do you honestly believe that I would not repay my debt?" asked Slam. "Or is it that you believe destruction of property is a worse crime then theft?"
Thalasi |

The elf hears the familiar words of magic being chanted
1d20+12 and recognizes the spell.
This brings up a good question. Do innate casters cast spells the same way as learned casters, like wizards? I was assuming that they did not and even had ways that were unique to them, hence the warbling whistle instead of a chant. Even if it was a chant, would it be something familiar to Thalasi? Kali has no formal training and basically discovered her casting by accident in a moment of desperation. So, I'm kinda wondering if he or Peri would be able to tell what she did other than by seeing the effects or feeling the threads that she's tugging on to do her magic.
Just some food for thought.

"How kind of you," Kali says as she catches the coin and pockets it, handily dodging the question of her status as a wizard. Her voice drips with sarcasm and the glare she levels the elf's way is only a few shades shy of murderous. "Should I call you Saint Thalasi while I lie with you?"
"Do you honestly believe that I would not repay my debt?" asked Slam. "Or is it that you believe destruction of property is a worse crime than theft?"
"Slam, I think it's more that we wanted the owner to find his boat undamaged," Kali says. "Please, can we just hide this already so we can find a safe place to rest."
After pulling the boat under some bushes, she writes a quick note apologizing for the borrowing and wedges it somewhere it wouldn't get wet, but would be easily found.
Maddok |
"Oh, uh, yeah. I can hide it with some help form Maddok and Slam," she says as she catches Peri's question.
"Maddok will help", the minotaur offers as he looks for a patch of thicket near the water the hide the vessel.
Survival?: 10 + 6 = 16
Slam |
Slam sighs and helps move the boat.
"Thalasi, please stop disrespecting her. I really could care less about the politics of the towers, but there is no reason to treat someone with disrespect."

[ooc]Kali's magic is not innate/intuitive (sorcery), but learned -- even if that learning is self-taught (bard) instead of requiring the greater learning of a trained (wizard) caster. Particularly in regards to Dragonlance, where arcane magic happens in part because of a specific language (Magius), IMO outright spellcasting would still follow that requirement. Sorcerers may instinctively form / stumble across the words to their few spells, bards might put it together from hearing other bards or the occasional wizard (they have an ear for music, and therefore potentially languages as well), but they're still going to be using Magius to do it.
Magical effects that aren't actual spellcasting, such as bardic performances, aren't so restricted -- or rather, the words of Magius are 'spoken' in a different manner.
No matter what, though, unless you have something that increases / changes the DC of a spellcraft test ... if it's a spell, it's still going to be able to be recognized as such.
"Then show some g0ds-be-d@mned fvcking courtesy, you arrogant elf bastard," snarls the human woman, stepping back from her mending of the boat, and turning to step towards Thalasi like a panthress stalking a fawn. "Or do you need to be spanked so that you remember your lessons from the Towers in that as well?? Your words and attitude are not becoming a Wizard of High Sorcery, White Robe." She gives the others a slashing look, and preemptively snaps, "The rest of you, stay out of this."
Her fierce gaze returns to her fellow wizard. "Apologize. Now. And curb your tongue in the future."
Please. You've gone too far.
Kalisuel |
It is fortunate that Slam speaks when he does. Kali is stepping up to Thalasi to deck him when the gentle ogre interrupts and lets her regain some control.
"Besides just now when you have continued to belittle a friend of mine, when have I insulted you," Kali asks as she helps Maddok and Slam get the boat under cover.

"Will you stop calling me that? It's a harmless prank. It'll go away in an hour or so," Kali mutters, "And keep your voice down. It's going to carry over the water."

Pier," Peregrine absently corrects Bander. "The dock is the water next to the pier where the boat goes." She shifts as best she can to keep the boat stable as Kalisuel clambers past Slam, Maddok, Na'shok, and Thalasi to get to the front of the boat and help Bander.
Bander shrugs, "In kenderspeak they are synonyms." Bander hops up to the pier and turns to receive the rope to tie it off. He looks quizzical as they pull the boat further toward shore. He claps his hands silently and motions for them to throw him the rope. When Slam breaks the boat. "I left a note!"
It takes her a couple minutes or so to push the slowly-sinking boat ahead of her to the shore, where (hopefully) she'll have help turning it over to empty the water from it. "I'm not a thief," she says with some acidity, then moves up to the hole in the side, which she inspects. Bander looks about for a trail or structure nearby.
"Do you honestly believe that I would not repay my debt?" asked Slam. "Or is it that you believe destruction of property is a worse crime then theft?"
He looks back. "We didn't steal it!" He takes a few steps back to the others. "I left a note!" He speaks in a manner that expects to end debate. He starts to walk the other way again to rejoin Nash but does a double take at the sight of Thalasi. He chokes on a laugh trying not to burst.
He moves up and looks further ahead and each way along the shore.
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
After a bit of scouting, repeatedly looking back at the sounds from the pier he looks at Nash, "Perhaps there are some folk in the Abyss that haven't heard them yet." He rolls his eyes like he is helping children. "Looks like I am going to have be the responsible one."
Bander walks with stern annoyed purpose stopping with his hand on his hip. "Ummm Hello. Can we stuff it. Its not like you all are gonna fight each over cross words." LOL apparently you are ready to fight but Bander would pick up on that.
"We are working for the Lords of Light. If Slam isn't crazier than a plucked owlbear in spring. Pull yourselves together."
He starts to walk away. He turns back. "Beating a pompous blowhard for their narrow take on the world simply proves that you are willing to come to violence to silence it. Seems unwise in the middle of the night, on the water, in a boat that you think you stole trying to hide from murderous hobgobs. If if it isn't already an equally arrogant position." He moves back toward Nash again mumbling absently about a mental genital comparison contest.
Slam |
"I see. A test is in order to prove my words."
Slam draws his sword, then slashes it across his hand, drawing blood. He then draws and unwraps the staff and touches it to his wound and murmurs a prayer, and his wounds...close.
Bander Drunkensquirrel |
Bander looks curious at Slam. His eyes go wide. He is about to protest that such a move is unnecessary but he is stunned silent at the healing. He reaches up to Slam's hand and turns it to examine. He speaks stunned, "I said if your crazy. I wanted to believe."
He lets go and moves away looking back. "Now I am certain. Of your mission. Crazy is still on the table."
Kalisuel |
Before Kali can reply to Bander's speech, she sees Slam pull out a sword and slice open his hand. She rushes up to try and help him, only to see no help is needed. She looks on in amazement. She had never seen a cut like that close so perfectly.
"Whoa," she says in a tiny voice, her previous anger with Thalasi all but forgotten.
"I guess it is past time we moved on," she says quietly after a moment of stunned silence. "I'll help Bander and Na'shok find us a place to sleep."
Perception (Looking for a place to sleep): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
Survival (Determining if it's a good place to sleep if Taking 10 isn't an option): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
As they search, Kali keeps glancing at Bander, wondering if she should tell him why she had been mad enough to be ready and willing to punch Thalasi. In the end, she decides not to. She also decides that if he's moved on from the other topic from just before they made the shore, she is going to let that lie right where it is.
"How long have you been away from home," she asks, hoping that she could learn a little more about the kender and take her mind off of the emotions and memories that the confrontation with Thalasi had stirred up.
Bander Drunkensquirrel |
Bander looks up and thinks for a moment calculating things, mumbling, "A couple days at sea, that business with the goblins, tried getting into Gwynedd that took awhile. Traveled with the barbaians for a few days, good venison. Maybe 3 months I've barely begun my wonder-wander. I lived in a tree city too. Its smaller than the Solace well I think it had more houses and a few more folks but the trees were smaller. Lookit is in a forest of toon trees. They have crescent shaped leaves. Actually pretty good on a salad. I miss it but in that sort of it was nice but not so much like I am burning with the home-yearning."
He glances back in the direction of the others. "I mean wow." Before any commiseration about how intolerable Thalasi is he says, [smaller]"Healing magic. That was supposed to be gone. The gods are back. Can you believe that."[/smaller He continues for awhile comparing deities in a manner not unlike a collector might compare the finer points of what they like and dislike about heroes in bard's tales. full on comic book geek discussion of the gods.
Maddok |
"OoooooOOoo", Maddok moos in marvel as he's otherwise speechless at the display.
Once the initial surprise fades, the minotaur examines Slam's hand closely. "Healing magic!"
Na'shok |
"I thought maybe you were a little touched in the head but you weren't kidding", the worg offers a bit more articulately. "The gods really do speak to you. What... How... Oh, f#~+ it we can figure out how this is all possible once we're in the clear."
Hearing Kali's suggestion, the worg nods. "Come on big guy, let's help find a place to setup camp."
