The Pathfinders cautiously enter the room, not spotting anything dangerous. As Nalaia creates a stream of water over the cauldron, a disembodied reptilian voice cries out. "Stop that - you'll ruin it!" Before any of the adventurers can react, a small reptilian figure blinks into view at the balcony's edge and tosses a small vial at Rami...

After the loathsome battle in the Otyugh’s clutches, Gervase’s stomach is empty.
She dry-retches as she heads 30 feet towards the southern stairs, dragging her Lucerne hammer behind her. (single move action)
Are the stairs difficult terrain, GM? If not, Gervase advances 5' to the east.
Rami Azar |
I believe stink bombs are a poison effect, so Rami would get +2 to his save due to poison resistance, so I think he saves.
Igor Ivantoe |
Igor tries to resist the effects of the Stink Bomb.

@GM Hawthwile - My character does not appear to be on the map with the others. This makes it difficult to act. If you can adjust it I would appreciate it.
GM Hawthwile |
Igor, your token is present on the map of the lower floor (in the tunnel) on the right side of the slide. As this portion of the map does not appear in the map of the upper floor (on the left side of the slide), your token has not been copied there. My apologies for any confusion.

Standard: Spend 1 luck point to Run Like Hell
At 4th level, a sleuth can spend 1 luck point to gain a +20-foot bonus to his speed for 1 minute. Furthermore, while under the effect of this bonus, if he moves more than his normal speed in a round, he gains a +4 bonus to AC until the start of his next turn.

Red Will vs DC 19: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13

Nalaia Fortitude vs Poison: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Nalaia plunges through the smoke cloud, barely noticing the sickening fumes. As she emerges from the other side, she bumps into Igor's invisible form before pushing further up the stairs. At the balcony landing, a CRACK of thunder from Rami's pistol is followed by a yelp from the kobold on the wall.
The kobold yips and pulls out another vial. Grinning wickedly at Rami, he holds it above the ifrit's head and drops it...

Gervase stumbles 30' of move equivalents back down the stairs, drawing her longbow as she goes.
The ranger's hammer head *THUD THUD THUDs* after her, like an emu AC with a wooden leg.
Igor Ivantoe |
Igor moves up the stairs and targets the reptilian with a Web (Reflex DC 19) spell.
The target point will be at the ceiling with the stage being the second anchor point. I want to target the spell so only the creature and not others are captured by the web. So perhaps the focal point of the spell will be west (left) of the stage to limit the spread of the spell.
Rami Azar |
I'm unclear of where you are trying to put that spell. Are you leaving room for us to exit the cloud? Seems a bit cramped for a web spell.
GM Hawthwile |
Does Rossby get AoO while nauseated?
Unfortunately, no.
Nauseated: Creatures with the nauseated condition experience stomach distress. Nauseated creatures are unable to attack, cast spells, concentrate on spells, or do anything else requiring attention. The only action such a character can take is a single move actions per turn.
Red Reflex vs DC 19: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31

I will admit, I'm not quite sure what this "stage" Igor is referring to is. Perhaps the balcony? If Igor can add some markings to the map as to the center of the burst and where it would be anchored, that might clarify things.

@GM Hawthwile - I have placed a black dot which should be the origin of the spell. It should catch between the balcony and the ceiling but not be effective in the rest of the room. At least this is my understanding but my character has over 20 Int so he should know better even if I do not.
GM Hawthwile |
Rossby has been nauseated for 3 rounds.
Indeed - for the purposes of tracking duration, however, I update the values at the end of each round. Rossby's turn counts are slightly wonky because I set the round counter to '2' rather than '1, 2'. Does that help clarify things?
I have placed a black dot which should be the origin of the spell. It should catch between the balcony and the ceiling but not be effective in the rest of the room.
Excellent. Based on your description, I am placing the origin of the burst at ceiling height and 5 ft to the left. This will create webbing across most of the ceiling and about 15 ft below (as if the balcony were extended via web to the far wall) without blocking off the stairs.
At least this is my understanding but my character has over 20 Int so he should know better even if I do not.
Remember that even characters with incredible ability scores can still make mistakes. That's part of what makes the game fun.

Delaying Nalaia.
As Rami's pistol thunders again, the kobold on the ceiling winces in pain. A few drops of blood drop onto the wooden floor like fitful rain, followed by a vial thrown with much anger at Rami's head!
As I understand it, because Rami only moved 30 ft, Run Like Hell's AC bonus is not currently active.

This time the explosion absorbs the heat from the air, leaving Rami's pistol coated in frost and the ifrit short of breath. But the sleuth does not let the cold stagger him, pushing through with a gunslinger's grit. Beside him, Rossby stumbles on a step and avoids the worst of the chill. Above, the kobold scampers out of the webbing towards the opposite corner of the room.

Gervase Goldhawkë |
Still sick to her emptied stomach, Gervase delays to keep out of the way of the unimpaired party members.
Rami Azar |
Sorry it wasn't more clear. I put a path on the map to show Rami's movement last round. He moved 40 feet. Assume if I take a move action to move, I'm going to trigger the bonus for run like hell, even if I have to move back and forth between two squares for some of the movement.
Igor Ivantoe |
Igor walks closer to the agile kobold and sends a shower of light his way in an attempt to knock him off his perch.
(Color Spray cast. Will DC 16 to resist)
@GM Hawthwile - Igor has plenty of movement remaining to position himself if he needs to shift over a bit to target Red in the cone but I think as it is only 10 feet up from his current position (He is at least 5' tall) he should be ok.
GM Hawthwile |
@Rami - Excellent! In that case, the bomb would miss. We'll use your Fortitude roll for the Reflex save against the splash damage, which is successful. Let me know if you use a point of Luck for Opportunistic Evasion and we'll take the damage off the tracker.
Red Will vs DC 16: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Igor reveals himself in a burst of rapidly-alternating colors. The kobold on the ceiling stands slack-jawed at the sight, though gravity closes his jaw rather than opening it.
To keep things moving, Rami can take two turns' worth of actions.
Gervase and Rossby both finally finish emptying their stomachs as the kobold sways on the ceiling.

Igor follows up with his own version, leaving the kobold covered in ice and swaying uncertainly on the ceiling.

GM, based on the single(?) movement by Red down the northern stairs, I’ve assumed they’re not hindered terrain.
Correct - the stairs are not difficult terrain. And yes, it was a single move. Speedy little fellow.
Igor Ivantoe |
Igor grimaces as he sees the speedy Kobold getting away. He makes a few arcane gestures dismissing his previously cast Web spell. He then makes his way towards the stairs.
Rossby Num |
The kobold should be Demoralized for 7 rounds, and have 7 non-lethal damage.
Rossby will drop his sling and move back down the stairs, drawing his lucerne hammer. He'll take an AoO if the kobold tries to run through again.
Nalaia Mak'kaht |
Hoh boy. Haven't smelled something that bad in quite some time!
Nalaia continues retching, hoping to clear the condition soon. I'm not in a cloud, right?
GM Hawthwile |
The kobold should be Demoralized for 7 rounds, and have 7 non-lethal damage.
Thank you - I forgot to include the Shaken condition in the turn tracker. He does not have any nonlethal damage remaining after his healing extract however, since that healed an equal amount of both lethal and nonlethal damage.
Botting Rami
The Pathfinders rush after the kobold with varying amounts of swiftness. Gervase is the first to reach him as he claws open a set of double doors and races through, careless of the woman's gauntlet. Were Nalaia closer to one of the large bay windows on the upper floor, she would have seen the kobold hurry through what looks to have once been a lobby of some kind and up a set of stairs into the darkness beyond.
Out of initiative! Damage Report:

- Rami (-3)
Nalaia recovers from her retching after a few more seconds of deep breathing and rejoins her companions downstairs. (No longer nauseated.)
If you think your characters would want to remain in initiative and keep up the pursuit, just let me know. Otherwise, you have a moment to regroup before pressing onward.

GM Hawthwile |
Hah! Excellent work by Gervase means we're still in initiative! Rolling things back...
As the kobold throws open the doors, Gervase grabs him by the tail and pulls him off his feet. From his back, he snarls in fear and grabs another vial. Smoke billows once more, but this time the smell is more reminiscent of campfire than cabbage.
