Geez, JonGarrett, what on earth did you do to offend the dice gods so badly?

Fayn |

Oh, I didn’t know it had started already! I’m baffled with all the posts and absolutely confused with what is happening. I’ll have access to my computer tomorrow night and should be able to catch up / wrap the profile. I was under the impression we were still working on the sheets, but I see people had been talking and even engaged in combat meanwhile. Again, my apologies - I won’t be able to catch up only with my phone, but by midweek I’ll put a post up. I wasn’t even sure if I was going to insist on the warlock or go for the other option I talked to the GM via PMs! Heh.

You haven't missed too much. Many of the posts were the pre-official start role-playing I said people could participate in. Combat started last night, which is when I said I would be the latest I would start the module properly (it just so happens that the module starts with combat).
I'll resolve this round of combat when I get home from work tonight.

Eirnar Cursedodger |

@GM Kaldwell has lady’s mercy on him, so if he manages to stabilize (I think he needs a 19) he’d be conscious at 1hp. If that happens, instead of misfortune I’d use shell of succor on him ( he gains 4d6+7 temporary hp).

Kaldwell |

Geez, JonGarrett, what on earth did you do to offend the dice gods so badly?
Well, there was that time with the...you know what, Paizo will ban me if I say what I did.
And yes, while I wasn't expecting it be relvent, I do have a Lady's Mercy or three. Am able to take any action this an action this turn? I have a bit of a stomach bug, apologies if I'm slow on the statline.

DM Puppet Master |

No, but combat ended, so I expect you'll be conscious again soon enough. Feel better!

Lokhir |

Delroy: you have +12 Stealth. I have +10. We both have very similar perception and Disable Device.
Do you have a spare feat? Stealth Synergy could be amazing for us. Our two characters already work together in combat to provide flanking. That feat would allow us to scout ahead with much less fear of a poor stealth roll giving us away.

Eirnar Cursedodger |

@Eirnar: How is it you're transferring damage to your poor scorpion? I'm also not sure what 'perform surgery' refers to.
@GM, imbue hex lets me transfer a hex for a single use. Lifelink at one point was transferred to my familiar, which he used on me, so he can take damage for me, and it persists indefinitely. This doesn’t do much most of the time since we both have each other life linked, but it can help spread damage if I cease the link on him.
Surgery refers to Kaldwell letting me stab him for 1 damage (1d3-2) to get an even multiple of 5 damage. I normally wouldn’t bother but seeing as he was 1hp from needing a breath of life, it seemed a prudent measure .

Kaldwell |

I still no math good (stomach bugs, whooooo), so I think I have 11 HP? My Lady's Mercy means I would have stayed at 1 HP pretty much instant, then two life links for 10 HP.

Eirnar Cursedodger |

You’re full Kaldwell, it just hurt for a minute . After the pain was almost all gone (4 damage) Eirnar muttered something about surgery and to your best recollection stabbed you with a small sharp dagger, but afterwards you felt like a new man

DM Puppet Master |

Thank you. That'll help the next time I get attacked by murderous birds.
In case you missed it, you also did not use up a Lady's Mercy as you failed to stabilize by yourself.

DM Puppet Master |

Have fun in your other games ArchLich.
Since 9 doesn't divide evenly into 5: Person with 1 card alphabetically: 1d5 ⇒ 5
I'll redistribute Fayn's cards like so:
Delroy:
- The Midwife
- The Sickness
Eirnar:
- The Cricket
- The Fiend
Lokhir
- The Joke
- The Rabbit Prince
Kaldwell
- The Beating
- The Wanderer
Yattle
- The Forge
The slides have been updated accordingly.

Lokhir |

If I understand cards right, we play them when they seem thematically appropriate? If so could I play “the joke” with the clowns?

Eirnar Cursedodger |

I’d recommend the crows instead of the joke. The card looks a lot like Tengu, while the joke looks like a bard with an illusion or something .
I suspect that looking at the cards is how we’re supposed to do this.

DM Puppet Master |

Yes, you can play cards at any time. You just have to post that you're doing that in Gameplay. I want to keep Discussion as a place where y'all are free to debate which cards might be relevant and have the player with the tattoo posting in Gameplay be a "This is my final answer, no going back" post.

Eirnar Cursedodger |

We can give Delroy the opportunity to report. I’d be a pretty poor mercenary if we sent our scout in and then immediately flew in as sir clanks o’ lot to get everyone’s attention. I’m assuming his scouting won’t take more than a few rounds (unless that tent has further extra planar magic making it bigger.

Eirnar Cursedodger |

The rules for siege engines talk about how to destroy a Colossal building, and how many hp it has. It looks like a very difficult task. It seems to indicate that structures of this size are reinforced throughout and destroying the central pillar wouldn’t necessarily collapse the entire thing. As a ranged attack the blast may also deal half damage to objects, unless it counts as a siege weapon.
Although a massive fist of earth smashing into the central pillar may give pause to the angry crowds who might be more concerned about their lives than cheering for our demise.

Eirnar Cursedodger |

@Kaldwell shouldn’t your damage be +7 (5 str, 2 enhancement)? Where is the +5 coming from?
Also, isn’t studying with Kirin a swift rather than a move action?

Kaldwell |

I am under the impression that using a more time-consuming action, such as a Move Action for something that would be a Swift or a Standard for something that would be a Move. I suddenly feel like that may not be a thing...?
The +5 is Combat Stamina's effect with Kirin Strike - even when I can't use a Swift Action to add Kirin Strike's effect I can, instead, add my Int modifier so long as I've Identified it.
The +8 is +5 Str, +2 Enhancement and +1 Weapon Training. Yay, Fighters.

Eirnar Cursedodger |

You can downgrade a standard to a swift by readying, but move actions can’t do that (otherwise you could use a move to quicken another spell).
The stamina thing is really cool (because Kirin requires 3 swift actions, this drops it to one to activate style, 1 to study ). It also helps a lot with the damage because +5 to all is a lot more valuable than +10 to one.

Kaldwell |

Darn. This is one of those times where real world logic and game rules does not intersect.
GM, would you prefer to leave it be and just drop the +5 from Kirin Strike for this round, or shall I re-do this one as a full attack since I would still have that Move?

DM Puppet Master |

Let's just keep it as is (including the extra damage) and fix it for future combats.
Thanks for being on top of things all!

Yattle |

Does your flail have something aside from the 'Trip' trait to give it +2 for this, Delroy? 'Cause unlike 'Distracting' and 'Disarm,' Trip doesn't have a bonus by itself.

Eirnar Cursedodger |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Its a plus 2 enhancement bonus, so trip, which takes the place of a melee attack, benefits from it.
Good news for Delroy, I suspect unicycling bears do not get the extra stabilization from having 4 legs...
On a more general note, I like how 3/5 of us look old, and the other 2/5 are actually probably older. We have 2 old warriors, one magically old witch doctor, one ‘relatively’ young elf older than those 3 us, and a Fey spirit, of completely indeterminate age...

** spoiler omitted **
And like all elves, Lokhir has squat to show from all of those years. ;)
As an aside. It hurt to lose my +9 damage, parries and Swift action buffs. But! Having Sneak attack, high movement and good Acrobatics is actually a lot of fun. It’s a really different way of fighting, and one that the crowd will hopefully enjoy.

DM Puppet Master |

GM, as we are just starting out. If an enemy hits Lokhir by 1-3, then he will use a point of Abjuration focus to add +4 AC, just like stone shield. Thus turning the hit into a miss. Thematically I picture it as him conjuring an magical barrier to deflect the attack.
I'm guessing you're referring to Danger Sight? If so, I don't believe that's how it works.
As an immediate action, you can protect yourself from harm by expending 1 point of mental focus. You can use this ability whenever you are the target of an attack or are required to attempt a saving throw against a special ability, spell, or trap. Doing so grants you an insight bonus to your AC or on your saving throw equal to 1/2 your occultist level. This bonus applies only to the next attack against you or saving throw you attempt, and if not applied by the end of the round, the protection fades and you gain no benefit.
Both the bolded sections suggest that you make the decision to use the ability before the roll is made. The trigger is being targetted, not being hit, and the fact that it applies to the next roll means that if the roll has already been made, you can't retroactively apply the bonus to it. As such, you'll have to declare when you post your action if you want to potentially use it the upcoming round.

Lokhir |

Oh...wow. That’s a severely nerfed stone shield. May I switch it to another power? I can’t see that ever being useful for anything besides throwing away Focus.
I’d swap it with telekinetic mastery. Something which situationally may be useful.

Yattle |

(I think Stone Shield works the same way fwiw - otherwise the whole bit about 'if you were missed by 1-4' wouldn't need to be there since you'd only use it when you would be barely hit)
That said, even if you end up keeping it an on-demand +4 to saves could still be useful ::shrug::

Eirnar Cursedodger |

I’d also say +4 ac when you really don’t want to be hit is probably pretty valuable.

Lokhir |

Ok. I’ll keep it, with the instructions of using it only when an enemy casts a spell against Lokhir. Making saving throws isn’t that common and +4 is a big deal on those.
That seems like the easiest way to do in a PbP setting.

Lokhir |

I love how the combat could be won by winning over the audience. Didn’t even occur to me that there was a way around this besides murder-hobo.

DM Puppet Master |

Just a head's up if you missed it (there were 3 posts all relatively close to each other). I've updated Bernaditi's response to include his answer to Eirnar. I'll write up his response to Delroy's question is a moment.

Eirnar Cursedodger |

Yeah these are occuring in realtime :)

Eirnar Cursedodger |

I'm game for the challenge, anyone else? I don't know what we'll do if we fail though....
My question would be is it in this room, then if he says no maybe we could detect magic (assuming its magical) find it, and win?

Eirnar Cursedodger |

Man I’m feeling like a merc... This guy has what I want, he isn’t willing to part with it, violence feels like the answer.
Anyone willing to be waggered? It seems far too easy for him to tell the truth and simply win...

Kaldwell |

I see no harm in trying it. If we screw up then violence becomes the answer, but I'd rather try and beat him at his game. It'll be more satisfying. And honestly? He seems smug and superior enough that I'd be surprised if he tried trickery. He strikes me as the sort who just knows he's smart enough to win.

DM Puppet Master |

Telling the truth is certainly the smart course of action. But is it really the fun course of action?
Put another way, the stipulation that the lie be told in the bounds of the game isn't meant to be a trick. If you ask him about the token during the game, he will give the same answer. You just can't try to verify if you're correct in your guess before the game starts.

Eirnar Cursedodger |

We all have bedrolls. Plan on a watch and continue till dark or return to camp?

DM Puppet Master |

If you want to camp, remember that you'll need some time to actually set up a camp as well as possibly go out hunting/gathering for food unless you also brought rations (I know Lokhir doesn't eat and I think Delroy bought rations, but I forget for everybody else).

Eirnar Cursedodger |

We easily have the survival rolls to do that, but that means we stop probably now. Given a half an hour (25 minutes). I can use an open slot to create a rather bland meal.

DM Puppet Master |

Oh, I have no doubt that you'd be able to hunt/gather enough food. It's just a question of making sure you leave time to do that. Though the Create Food/Water is definitely a faster approach.

Eirnar Cursedodger |

My vote would be track until dark and plan to use my open slot accordingly, since we want to gain on this guy as much as possible. Anyone else have any suggestions? I assume others can prepare the camp while I commune with my ancestors to get us food.
I assume an extended create food and water would have the food stay fresh for 48 hours?

DM Puppet Master |

Yeah, the extended duration makes sense. Purify Food and Drink will still only extend the duration by another 24 hours.

Lokhir |

Lokhir can sleep while everyone else is awake. Two hours later, he can keep watch at night while everyone else sleeps. Makes for a very easy watch schedule, even if it would be quite boring for the elf. That will also give us plenty of time to forage around for those who don’t have very handy rings.

Kaldwell |

Kaldwell has Craft (Food) +10 and about 50 meals worth of supplies. So we're probably OK for supper. He only has enough water for himself, however.
