Some house rules I'd like to use

Note that, these are rules I'd like to use, not ones we have to use. If any of these are deal breakers let me know. I definitely didn't think I'd write as many as a did, but I definitely don't want this game to feel like PFS!

From the Player's Guide:
Since this Adventure Path starts in the small town of Trunau, it’s best for at least one character to be from Trunau, or at least a regular visitor of the town. One of the campaign traits in this player’s guide helps root characters who select it in Trunau, and the rest of the traits also make sense for characters from that region. To help players of local characters familiarize themselves with Trunau, a gazetteer of the town is provided starting on page 7 of this guide. This gazetteer can help you figure out what growing up in Trunau would be like and introduce you to some of the town’s most important people.

If your character is not from Trunau, but is familiar with the town, she could still gain this familiarity from frequent visits. Your character could be part of a caravan that regularly supplies the town, or belong to a group of scouts who patrol southern Belkzen and stop by the town to rest and resupply. For characters with no previous association with Trunau, it could be that your character is part of a merchant caravan that just arrived in town the same day that the adventure begins, or perhaps the party formed in another bordering nation and started its adventuring by setting off through southern Belkzen. Your character could be a half-orc cast out of a nearby tribe and looking for civilized company, or an envoy from Lastwall who’s is part of a group charged with checking in on the besieged town. It also wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for your character to be a Shoanti wanderer who came across the town and has been enjoying the safety of its walls and the townsfolk’s hospitality.

Whatever the case, the Adventure Path works best if you plan for your character to visit the brave and independent town of Trunau. For more information on neighboring nations and nearby settlements, as well as advice for a personal backstory, see the Origins section on page 4.

This AP works pretty well with some strange races, with being a strange race looking for acceptance being a decent reason to visit Trunau in of itself.

Character Generation (Also in the google doc):
1) 25pt buy
2) 300 starting gold
3) Any race as long as you have reason to go to Trunau
4) Start at level 2
5) Take max HP at each level
6) 2 traits and a campaign trais. Drawback for an extra trait
7) "Skill feat" at every odd level. The feat should not usually be applicable to combat. Crafting feats are ok for this.
8) 3rd party is legal if you can show me the text or link it or something so I can plan for it
9) There is no "alignment". Use the removing alignment (loyalties) rules from unchained.
10) Automatic bonus progression? Yes or no?

Some of you are waiting to see party comp to decide on your PC, so lets compile that as a list for everyone's reference benefit. These aren't set in stone yet, so feel free to change them as long as you let everyone know what you're thinking so you guys can have the party comp you want. Make sure you check out the player's guide for some advice on what's useful and what isn't.

I was thinking. Would we all (or at least a bunch of us) want to go in on a teamwork feat, say shake it off, with that extra feat?

It's technically not a combat feat, though it would certainly help in combat if spells are flying.

Dark Archive

Giantslayer! || Emerald Spire Maps || || Witchwar Legacy ||

Hmm, now I have to decide if I want to encourage teamwork feats by allowing you to use your bonus feats on them, or if I should enforce that most of them are for combat which kind of defeats the purpose of the extra feat I'm giving you.

Tell you what, you can use your skill feats on teamwork feats that don't really apply to combat, so no outflank or shake it off, but at levels 5, 10, and 15 I'll let everyone gain a teamwork feat for working together for so long. I'll add that to the rules document as well.

Examples of Non-combat Teamwork feats:
Stealth Synergy
Secret Language
Scion of the Land
Sacrificial Aid
Fall Guy
Exceptional Aid
Ensemble
Drinking Buddy
Collective Recollection
Bonded Mind
Basic Harmony
Amplified Radiance

Hello everybody, hello GM zer0darkfire,
I really want to apologize to you all for my absence.

I am GMing Salvation of the Sages currently and work is crazy and I am so unsure if my choice of character is correct that I am freezing.

I am also going on vacation for three weeks starting tomorrow.

All this makes me believe that it is not a good idea to start the AP now with you. I really do not want to be the blocking part in your game and you are such great players with wonderful characters and I currently cannot contribute in a way to make it a fun experience for all of you and myself. :-(

I am really super sorry and know that this is an inconvenience and I truly apologize.

No need to get worked up over it, you're more then welcome to join in later in the AP, so keep thinking about the character you want to play and drop a post here when you're more available to join up.

@Little Ben, Thyste pointed me to your trait for weapons larger than you having half penalties. Technically this doesn't actually allow you to use weapons far larger than normal, it just lowers the penalties. So a large bastard sword would be fine and only have a -1 penalty, but you still can't use a large or huge two-handed weapon like a greataxe. Since this is a casual, lets not play PFS game though, I'm totally fine with it being a large greataxe. A huge greataxe is a little much for me in the way of, well, how do you actually swing the darn thing. Another reason I'm ok with large two-handers is because giants could be carrying large two-handers that you could actually make use of instead of them being annoying loot to lug around.

Thanks. I just did some reading and saw stats for the huge great axe and latched on to that. I have absolutely no problem reducing the size to large and am just glad I still get to use it. So, I think that puts it at 3d6 instead of 4d6, right? and when/if he is enlarged it goes up to 5d6? I could also trade away the toughness feat for proficiency in a butchering axe. Basically lose the -1 for a feat, but I really like the idea of Ben lugging around a large battle axe. More fun that way.

Hey guys, as we near the beginning of August, I need to inform you of some changes to my presence here on the boards. On August 19th, I'll be starting full-time graduate school while working full-time as a teacher. I don't really know what to expect in terms of workload from graduate school, but I've heard its...quite intensive. To that end, I'm significantly cutting back on my PbP campaigns.

I probably should have considered this before I started this Giantslayer campaign, and I did to some degree, but my job hours are likely to change from what they usually are in the school year to more of what they are like in the summer. I'm only planning on keeping this game, and 2 others active long term games, at least at first, so I don't expect to have too many issues keeping those games going. I would say that at worst, I may not be able to post every day depending on what my workload is, but I imagine I should be able to spare at least 10min a day making posts for my 3 games.

This game and my Emerald Spire game are my top priorities for posting, as I'm not the type of GM to just ditch their long term commitments.

Anyway, I hope none of you have issues with this, but I totally understand if you do, but at least bear with me for the first week of classes so I can see what they are going to be like in terms of workload.

ConGRADulations on GRAD school. Getting in isn't necessarily easy. And I've heard that the workload can vary dramatically depending on your major.

But whether you're getting an advanced degree in pottery making or astrophysics, I say, focus on that and post here when you can.

Hopefully, anyone who signs up for an AP knows it's going to be a long haul. I certainly expect it to.

Library science! I'm aiming to be a high school librarian. I was kind of worried about getting in honestly because there wasn't a bachelors program from library science so I didn't really care about my classes which dropped my GPA a bit. Thankfully, I really crushed the MAT (entrance exam) which I think really helped me get in.

Anyway, I have no idea what my workload is going to be for school, but if I get the promotion from assistant teacher to full teacher, my hours are likely to change from 630am-930am and 230pm-630pm (with that break in the middle of the day to make my posts and do schoolwork) to something like 8am-1pm and 230pm-530pm.

In grad school they give you a lot of leeway and expect you to figure stuff out on your own. You need to be motivated and attack things, not just wait for the teacher to tell you what you need to do or know. Far less hand holding. There are a lot of open ended 'write a paper about something related to X' or 'find a way to prove to me you know something' type assignments rather than fill in the bubbles on this test. That was my experience anyway.

+1 for this sentiment from me. I've played 2 AP's and one had 2 almost TPK's in the first book (I was the only survivor of the first and died 1st in the second) so I dropped out. I believe the other one got all the way through the first book, though we weren't playing for credit so I'm not sure.

But I'm excited about the prospects of actually seeing a chronicle sheet for an AP, if nothing else.

Hey guys, after almost exactly 7 months of looking I finally found a new job, which is good news.

The bad news is that my posting rate probably will go down to once per day at most since I won't be able to check the boards or post during working hours (I don't want them knowing I'm a slacker immediately, after all.)

Bot me, as necessary but I should be able to keep a one a day rate.

Lidia is actually based on an NPC from a campaign a friend of mine ran a couple years ago that happened to take place in Belkzen. I knew nothing about this AP going into it, but it seems to be triggering a lot of strong character backstory buttons with her already, and I'm just trying to be honest to those. I'm sure it'll work out as we go forward.

In my mind, clerics and witches aren't all that different since both receive their powers from a very powerful source. I think its really the relationship that's different, while a cleric asks his deity for power in exchange for worship, a witch makes a deal for power in exchange for some level of servitude.

And thanks to all for the congratulations on the job. It's been a long time coming and I suspect we will happen to get to know each other and each other's lives pretty well before this is all over.
