I'm leaning toward an elf wizard. My 2e experience encompasses one playtest table a year ago and one new scenario 4 months ago, so be gentle with me. I'll try and put him together tonight.

It was clear from the moment Fitz saw Aida's human form that he was terrified of her, and was basically just playing along in the hope that he could get away from her at some point. But then he slipped and made it clear that Ophelia wasn't his one and only and immediately just ran for his life screaming "She can't be stopped!" He had been intricately involved in the design of her current body, so he knows of what he speaks. Her tweaks go well beyond teleporting and regeneration I think.

I don't think it's a coincidence that Ghost Rider reappeared just at this moment. I think Aida essentially used Darkhold magic to make herself a Ghost Rider type body, and Fitz knows it. I thought of that the moment I saw her bullet holes healing with what looked like fire. And I think Robbie/Ghost Rider has returned to this plane of existence to deal with her at the behest of his demonic soul partner, who will suffer no rivals/substitutes/imitators. Note that Robbie was in Skullhead mode when he came back -- demon side is in control right now, and Skullhead is always motivated by vengeance. Which means there's a big showdown looming between those too very soon.

I wouldn't be surprised if Yoyo ends up staying the framework with Mack. Then everyone gets what they want. Well, unless the computer crashes I guess.

This is a post-convention report on Marmalade Dog 21:

Marmalade Dog 21 took place last weekend (March 18-20) at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. It is a gaming convention that attracts ~300 gamers mostly from the west Michigan area, though we get some folks from mid-Michigan (around Lansing & Mt Pleasant) and northern Indiana/Chicago. While Pathfinder Society events represent one of the major draws for the weekend (we are given our own HQ table and allowed to separately handle our own event registration, unlike any other RPG), there are lots of other RPGs being played, including D&D 5th ed, Call of Cthulu, DCC, GURPS, Dresden Files, and Star Wars. The room also features about a dozen vendors, Battle Pods and Star Trek Artemis, plus board gaming and CCGs. It’s also a favored venue for local game developers to beta-test new games or try to introduce new games/ gaming items to the public.

For the weekend, we had 36 tables scheduled over 7 slots (5 of those tables represented a single run of Plunder & Peril, played in its entirety over the weekend). Of those 36 tables, 34 actually went off, and 2 tables were cancelled for insufficient players. One scheduled table in each slot was Core Campaign (“Core on Table 4”). We had 52 unique players sit at our tables throughout the weekend, the large majority of them multiple times. We gave away 6 new Pathfinder numbers to brand new players over the weekend. Last year we had 31 tables go off, 58 unique players and 9 new cards handed out, so we were approximately on par with previous years.

The table breakdown by slot was as follows:

Friday
Slot 1: 3/4 tables, 19 players
Slot 2: 5/5 tables, 25 players
Saturday
Slot 3: 5/5 tables. 29 players
Slot 4: 6/6 tables, 35 players
Slot 5: 5/6 tables, 26 players
Sunday
Slot 6: 5/5 tables, 26 players
Slot 7: 5/5 tables, 27 players

Total: 34/36 tables, 187 players (vs. 31/39 tables, 167 players in 2015; 155 players in 2014)

The tier breakdown was as follows:

Tier 1-2 & 1-5: 14/15 tables
Tier 3-7: 5/5 tables
Tier 5-9: 5/6 tables
Tier 7-11: 3/3 tables
Modules & Exclusives: 8/8 tables
Core Campaign: 6/7 tables

Overall, the PFS portion of the convention ran smoothly. We had no complaints or grievances come in to HQ from players or GMs, there were no administrative problems, and tables were all reported the same day they were played. At our HQ table we gave away blank character sheets, table tents, Inventory sheets, Faction Cards for Season 7, contacts for local PFS public gaming groups, and scenario tracking sheets. We also provided a full complement of all legal pre-gens for people to use and peruse.

All our GMs received a single GM boon for their efforts, and in addition the convention gave them free admittance on days they ran games. Also, all GMs at M-Dog were given free T-shirts by convention organizers. Each table was given a $10 Paizo gift certificate to roll off for, and all PFS players got a chance to take a free die from a Q-Workshop dice grab bag at every table in each slot (while they lasted). The gift certificates were received well. Players who received a new Pathfinder number were given a “Welcome to Pathfinder” boon. We had no Player Boons to give out this year, and some players did ask about that.

In previous years, M-Dog convention organizers had insisted on making all PFS game sign-ups on site the day of the game. This year we broke away from that, and had advanced registration for players through Warhorn, which we advertised through Facebook and other local gamer sites. People were still allowed to sign-up onsite as well, and we didn’t ever have to turn anyone away who wanted to play. People had complained in past years that they didn’t want to drive a long way to our convention, and then because of the vagaries and timing of onsite registration, perhaps miss out on what they really wanted to play. In addition, with our multi-part Plunder & Peril run, I wanted to make sure we had a stable group committed for the whole weekend. I anticipate that we will continue to use advance registration in the future — the system worked well, and made our process much more efficient and headache-free.

I’d like to give special recognition to my local Venture Agent Carrie Cosby, who GM’d Plunder & Peril for the weekend. Not only did she put in the time to prepare the module and hand-draw all the game maps, but she came in pirate costume each day, provided brownies for her players, and provided hand-made prizes for her players. Each player received a hand-made pirate tote bag with a logo she designed, and a handmade copper hippocampus mini that other minis could ride upon (which is a unique feature of the module). Players got to take these home as souvenirs of the event. The module was such a success that the players have asked Carrie to prepare and run the sanctioned content for Skull & Shackles, Tempest Rising a few months down the road, so their pirate characters can continue to adventure together, and this from a group that really had no ties to one another before the event started. This was Carrie’s first convention ever, and I couldn’t be more proud of her.

Thank you everyone for all the incredibly kind words and good wishes. I'm very honored to be part of such a friendly and flourishing campaign as the Pathfinder Society, and every convention and every game day I attend only reinforces for me what great, fun folks my fellow gamers are. I look forward to seeing you all at Gen Con!

Welcome Geekspeaker!

There is actually a good sized PFS community growing up in Grand Rapids these days, but we west michigan folks are not good about always getting our game days posted onto the Paizo site.

I would recommend you check out a couple places for info on current west michigan PFS events. The first is http://michiganpfs.org/forum/recent which is where we post our regular game days and track sign-ups.

The PFS sessions at Excelsior Games in Greenville are probably going to be your best bet. They have multiple tables of PFS every other weekend. They have a Facebook page that can let you see what that community is up to: https://www.facebook.com/groups/317049681703093/

The Excelsior group has a lot of players who are fairly new to PFS and its a great environment for learning the ropes.

Feel free to contact me directly if you'd like more specific info about contact people, or any other questions that may be on your mind.

Silver Crusade 5/5

This is a post-convention report for this year’s Marmalade Dog convention at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI. It took place over the weekend of February 6-8, 2015.

Boons and prize support arrived in plenty of time. Everyone who GM’d at least one table for us got a GM boon. Every person who received a chronicle sheet, GM or player, got a chance to roll for either a prize or a player boon. A roll of 16 or better on a 20-sided die won their choice of prize or boon. In addition, every table gave away one copy of the Pathfinder novel. We ended up giving away 17 player boons and 15 GM boons.

We had 39 tables of Pathfinder Society RPG play scheduled. Of those, 31 tables actually went off. In addition, we had scheduled a table of PACG to be available in each of the 7 slots, and of those, 2 actually happened. So we had a grand total of 33 tables of Pathfinder action of one sort or another. This is about on par with last year, when we had 31 tables reported. As is often the case at Marmalade Dog, Pathfinder Society was the primary draw for the convention, especially for RPG activity, though there was an increased presence for Goodman Games (DCC, Castles & Crusades, etc) over previous years.

Because we’d scheduled our games with the convention organizers by December 31st, 2014, we did not have any Core Campaign tables scheduled.

We had 58 unique players sit at our tables at some point over the weekend. We gave away 9 new PFS numbers to new players over the weekend.

The table breakdown for PFS, slot by slot, was as follows:
Friday
Slot 1: 3/4 tables, 15 players
Slot 2: 5/6 tables, 26 players
Saturday
Slot 3: 4/4 tables. 26 players
Slot 4: 6/6 tables, 30 players
Slot 5: 5/7 tables, 26 players
Sunday
Slot 6: 4/7 tables, 22 players
Slot 7: 4/5 tables, 22 players

Total: 31/39 tables, 167 players (vs. 31/50 tables, 155 players in 2014)

The tier breakdown was as follows (#tables that reported/#tables scheduled)
Tier 1-2 & 1-5: 20/21 tables
Tier 3-7: 5/8 tables
Tier 5-9: 1/3 tables
Tier 7-11: 3/4 tables
Modules: 1/2 tables

In general, our turnout was on par with last year. We did a better job predicting how many tables we would need to accommodate our demand, though we still could have probably fielded more tables in slot 3&4 if we had more GMs.

HQ workers had a smooth weekend administratively, and there were no major complaints or grievances reported by players or GMs. Results were reported to the Paizo site by Feb 12th.

In general, it looks like this convention is going to support 30-40 tables from year to year, and we shall plan accordingly. In addition, we shall continue to focus on low level scenarios to cater to a clientele that are either trying PFS for the first time, or who only play infrequently. We had initially scheduled some tables of Bonekeep and Eyes of the Ten, but we cancelled those while we were still in the planning stages. With only 4 hour slots, and with most of our players being entry level, Bonekeep would probably have been too challenging to be enjoyable in most cases. And since the M-Dog convention has no advanced sign-ups (players sign up for tables in between slots), the chances of getting a stable arc of level 12 characters for Eyes of the Ten to commit to 5 slots seemed ambitious. In retrospect, I think those were the correct decisions. This year we focused more on current season scenarios and gave less attention to older scenarios. In general, I think this worked out well, but next year I’ll probably try to offer some more unusual content, like modules and APs, so that more experienced players have more choice over the weekend.

To be honest, the Card Game campaign is new to me, and I wasn’t really sure what to expect. Fortunately I had some experienced hands who were ready to pick up the PACG ball and run with it, but we probably could have done more to highlight it. We had almost no interest over the weekend, but we also had very little to advertise that it was happening and what it was about. Next year, we should be in a better position to promote PACG now that we have some experience.

As a side note, I had difficulty reporting tables on the Paizo site this year — it seemed that if players hadn’t registered their PFS numbers or their newer characters that the system wouldn’t accept them or the whole table that they attended, so I had to leave several players unreported altogether. Some fraction of players, especially the casual gamers who try out PFS a few times a year, never report their numbers or access the website, and I imagine that was the case with most of these problem numbers, but I’m guessing that other players are going to wonder one day why their results for this convention never got input. I’m going to be saving the hard-copies of the session sheets for a few years to guard against this eventuality. I don’t know if this is a temporary glitch in the reporting system, or if this is the way it has to be from now on to avoid confusion between PFS vs Core vs PACG.

Post-Convention Report ( a little late)

All boons and prize support arrived in plenty of time. We had enough Pathfinder novels that we could award one book to a single dice-off winner at each table. In addition, for each table we allowed a dice off, with the high roller getting either a boon or one of the books/flipmats provided by Paizo. Our system was to give out boons on rolls of 1-15, and physical prizes on 16-20. Everyone who GM’d at least once got a GM boon, and GM boon was also awarded to an HQ volunteer who manned our HQ all weekend. In addition, we arranged for commemorative dice to be made for our event, and every players in every slot got a die as a souvenir — if they played all weekend, they came away with 8 dice, which is a decent sized fireball.

This was the second year of Grand-Con, and it was at a different venue from last year, i.e. the convention center at a local Crowne Plaza Hotel vs the convention center at Calvin College. I decided to be conservative and schedule around the same number of tables as last year, and have back-up GMs ready at HQ in each slot to field pick-up tables if demand required. Thus we had 36 tables scheduled (some of which were 2-slot events), which is around the same number as last year.

We had problems with our hosts (MSTB games, the hotel representatives, and the local organizers of the overall convention). We had requested round tables capable of seating at least 6 players for our games. Instead we were given rows of trestle tables, all joined up like you’d find at an Oktoberfest tent. We were not given a HQ table. We were put into a room with all the other RPG events at the convention, and so during busy slots (which was most of the day Saturday and Sunday) the decibel level was such that people not adjacent to the GMs could barely hear what was happening. When we approached the convention HQ with our grievances, they generally deflected responsibility to one of the other three organizing forces in such a way that no one was ever responsible and no one could ever do anything. Thus we had to cannibalize one of our gaming tables for an HQ spot, and steal tables not assigned to us that were unoccupied to accommodate our scheduled games, which was not ideal. In addition, we ran the 6-00 Legacy of the Stonelords interactive special, and managed to find our own digital projector. However, even though the hotel had screens, they wouldn’t let us use it unless (A) we paid $60 to use it for that slot, (B) moved two of our tables a couple of feet, which the convention organizers wouldn’t allow us to do. We tried projecting onto the wall, but this involved setting our projector on a table that wasn’t one of ours, and it got occupied by gamers an hour into the slot, so we had to do without the interactive map.

I’ve attended many MSTB conventions in the past, and in general they do their part very well. It seemed to me that they were simply not given an adequately-sized space to accommodate all the events and vendors and guests that they were loaded with. I’ve been given to understand that the convention will be held at a different venue yet again next year. I also overheard that they had something like 2000 people come though that weekend, for all the activities.

Anyway, back to PFS. Of our 36 tables, 30 of which went off. 3 of the tables that didn’t happen were in the first 2 slots on Friday, when overall attendance was fairly sparse, and 3 of the tables that didn’t happen were due to an Eyes of the Ten cycle that was scrubbed — 4 of the 5 players who signed up didn’t have 12th level characters and thought they could just play pregens, we rescheduled the first slot of the cycle with a different low level scenario, and the remaining tables we didn’t replace since we had converted one of our game tables to an HQ and we physically had no room to offer a replacement table in those slots. On Saturday and Sunday our other tables were fairly full, and on Sunday especially were were told by MSTB HQ that we could offer twice as many tables and sell them all out. But having no place to actually physically play such games, even though we had back-up GMs available, we couldn’t offer any more events.

Here’s the table breakdown by slot:
Friday
Slot 1: 3/4 tables, 15 players
Slot 2: 3/5 tables (one a carry-over from slot 1), 16 players
Slot 3: 5/5 tables, 24 players
Saturday
Slot 4: 4/4 tables, 16 players
Slot 5: 4/5 tables. 24 players
Slot 6: 4/5 tables, 21 players
Sunday
Slot 7: 4/5 tables, 20 players
Slot 8: 4/5 tables, 22 players

By our count we had 62 unique players sit at our tables over the 3 days. 23 of those players were brand new to PFS and were given PFS numbers for the first time.

The feedback we got from players was almost universally positive, even from tables where players died. Our only complaints were in regards to the noise in the room, which of course was beyond our control. Our focus was on late season 5, early season 6 scenarios, and we made sure to offer at least half our tables as level 1-5. Everything went smoothly with our mustering and at HQ, and we had all our tables reported to the Paizo site by the end of the day Sunday.

Looking forward to next year, we will definitely be offering more content on Saturday and Sunday, probably 5 tables per slot on Friday, and 7-8 tables per slot on Saturday and Sunday. Because of all the walk-in/beginner players we encounter at this convention, we’ll continue to focus on low level scenarios, We Be Goblins, Silverhex, etc., with at least one special and some elite events for veteran players feathered into all the slots.

Sorry to hear that things turned out so rough. Am I understanding correctly (by inference) that the players spent 90+ minutes of in-game (not out-of-game) time disabling the runes?

I recall that's how long it takes before Krune revives on his own, and that is primarily a means of mitigating the means by which a group might rest after just the first fight.

Of course, if you have a GM who isn't fully prepared and spends 20 minutes reading before you enter the room with the Lashmistress and the naga, then you're just boned.
