A set of white furniture stands around the door to a briefing room in an unfamiliar spaceport. The room is chilly, enough so that breathing organisms can see their breath fog in the air. A red light shines over the automated door, along with a strand of scrolling red digital text: Please wait here for briefing. Enter when the light turns green.

Dot in/introduce yourselves here.

Walking into the room is a male shirren who stands a little tall for his species. Dressed in a set of reinforced clothing, they carry a rifle on their back and a small-arm at their waist, as well as a survival knife opposite the gun. Other than their backpack, the only other notable thing on them is a nametag on their left shoulder, which reads Klysk. Following them into the room is a small spider-like robot, skittering into the room along the wall.

Looking at the other individual who has arrived before him, Klysk gives a gentle bob of his head in greeting. With a flick of his antennae, he sends out a telepathic message. "Greetings! My name is Klysk. Sure is quite chilly in here, isn't it?"

As a note, my character is deaf. Also, should I swap my character portrait to limit any potential confusion?

Chivix is a medium-sized shirren that appears to be dressed in a bright red pirate's coat with mid-length black skirts beneath. The rather flamboyant costume is offset by the laser rifle, bandoleer of grenades, and mechanics toolkit strapped around him. He moved into the room and the outfit flickered, showing bare graphite carbonskin armor before settling back to the original look. The mechanic - for that is surely what he is - fiddled with the control box for a moment before smacking it hard with a true-hand.

"Dratted secondhand equipment! This shirren cannot believe he traded a perfectly good physical recording for such shoddy..."

He looked up to see the rest of you staring. He quickly straightened and introduced himself.

"Chivix here, with my companion Gravy. It is a pleasure for Chivix to meet you all. Chivix looks forward to working with you."

Noticing that Klysk didn't respond to his words, Chivix sent the same message telepathically.

Radaszam, leader of the Acquisitives faction, stands before a large window in this briefing room, observing small ships come and go through a diminutive blue portal in the distance. As he watches, a hunk of ice emerges from the portal and travels directly toward the base. At the table in the center of the room sits Historia-7, staring at a hologram of a purple starship that does not appear to be of Pact Worlds design.

Radaszam turns from the view and addresses the new arrivals. “Greetings, Starfinders. I trust your journey here was relatively peaceful and that the portal did not give you much trouble when docking.”

Historia-7 makes a motion with her hand, and the small purple starship disappears and is replaced by a larger hologram depicting a trinary star system. “Let’s get started. As you know, over a year ago, a large number of Starfinders were trapped in a trinary star system called the Scoured Stars. However, thanks to diligent work and keen investigation by the Society over the past year, we recently discovered a device that let us take down the barrier and we were able to send in a rescue mission.” She flicks her wrist, and the purple ship reappears, replacing the star system. “However, our rescue mission was interrupted by the arrival of a fleet of alien ships piloted by a race calling themselves the jinsuls. We were not prepared for the overwhelming force of these aggressors."

“During the incident, we recovered a jinsul starship, and our technicians have spent the last weeks going over the ship from top to bottom. Last week, we finally made a breakthrough: we discovered that this particular ship is programmed to return to an outer shipyard within the Scoured Stars system for prescheduled maintenance.”

Radaszam spreads his arms and grins, revealing long rows of white teeth. “This is where the fun begins. If you don’t mind, Historia, this is my favorite part.” He turns to the table, shifting the hologram to an alien starbase with a busy maintenance dock. “This is the station where our jinsul craft is scheduled to dock. We’ll use this opportunity to send a message to the rest of the jinsul fleet: the Starfinders and our allies are not a foe to be taken lightly. Now, Historia-7 tells me that since the jinsuls’ technology relies so heavily on automation, we’ll be able to stow away on the returning craft and board the station without detection. Our mission—yes, Historia and I are going with you—is to clear a path to the primary reactor deep within the base and rig it with explosives.”

Historia-7 continues, “Starfinders, the bomb we are bringing—the jinsul craft’s original self-destruct unit—requires onsite modifications to correctly interface with the jinsuls’ power reactor. Radaszam and I will remain behind on the spacecraft while you scout a path to the reactor and clear any obstacles. This is an opportunity to investigate jinsul technology firsthand, and whatever you discover could be invaluable on our mission planning regarding the jinsuls. Once you secure safe passage, contact us via communicators and we’ll bring the bomb and set the charges. I imagine we’ll need to depart fairly quickly after that to avoid detection. Do you have any questions about your mission?”

Joining them was a tall male Kasatha, armed with a variety of pistols and a baton in case things got too close. His mouth covering was a solid metal faceplate that had seen some wear and tear, and he appeared to be wearing armor over an outdated law enforcement officer's uniform, and a pair of tactical goggles on this large forehead. Nodding to the two shirren, he uncrossed a set of arms as he walked in. "Serathus Quonan Bruzbasil Wayans Rovert Judowney Dol, codename SerDol, reporting for duty" He said it out loud, though upon realizing one was deaf, will eventually think it back, hoping the telepathy could be answered.

----

To Radaszam and Historia-7, he stands at attention, listening intently to the plan, a look of determination in his eyes. "Fun indeed sir. Looking forward to taking this fight directly to the enemy. What sort of resistance can we expect? You mentioned much of their systems are automated-will we be fighting Jinsuls or Robots?"

Klysk nods to SerDol to indicate that he got the message. Then, once the mission briefing has begun, he 'listens' to the two faction leaders through his Drone. The small robot conveys the information through a combination of mostly sign language with occasional textual messages.

After SerDol asks his question, Klysk takes a moment while it is being answered to think about any he has. With a slight twitch of his antennae, he telepathically projects his question so that everyone in the room can 'hear' it. {I vividly recall the events of the rescue mission to the Scoured Stars, as I believe anyone else who went on that mission would. Something of note I recall is the ferocity with which these Jinsul fought us with everything that they could, including ramming with their ships. How was it that you managed to capture this one intact enough to stay operational?}

Radaszam smirks and addresses the drone mediating to the deaf shirren. “During our escape from the Scoured Stars, I came across this wounded little ship. The jinsul crew aboard the spacecraft resisted all attempts at negotiation on our part and chose death over surrender. They went so far as to try to board our flagship and commandeer it. Can you believe that?! I couldn’t, but it sure meant that we were left with a minimally damaged jinsul craft.”

With a flat voice she says The chance for not having already have met one of the five agents was 19.6%. She smiles and adds in the same voice Sorry for being late. I was racing with pirates in the Diaspora. Nice meeting you I’m M’Shak.

“Never tell me the odds kid”

A male lashunta steps out from the corner of the room. His skin is so pale that it borders on stark white. He has a swaggering gait as he takes a seat at the table and puts his feet on the table. His eyes have a mischievous glint to them that makes you want to hold tighter to your cred sticks. He seems harmless enough, but you suspect that scum like him wouldn’t have been allowed into the society if the need hadn’t been so great. His belt is adorned with a variety of trinkets from a abycus, napkins, to a teddy bear with 4 arms. Hidden in this assortment of seeming junk are a couple of pistols and a wicked survival knife. He smiles at everyone present and says:

“Since were introducing ourselves, the name is Jerix Kade. Greatest thief you’ve never met”

His display of confidence falls flat....

A high pitched noise, like a metal door squeaking loudly as some opens it slowly, rings throughout the room, though only lasts a few seconds, and those with sharp hearing would realize the sound came from SerDol groaning in a cross between frustration and exasperation. "One of these days, Jerrix, I'll get to go on a mission where you don't introduce yourself to me for the 15th tine." despite that, the tone of his voice was more amused than annoyed. The lashunta, despite his...evcentricites... was handy to have around and was fairly reliable. Still, that didnt stop SerDol from quickly searching the infosphere for any bounties placed on him.

Not finding anything, he looks to the newcomer, wondering what sort of person spent their free time racing pirates, making a note to keep an eye o. Her as well, before tur ing back to Radaszam "Hardly a good plan on their endn glad to hear they were dealt with. Any other hostiles to be weary of?"

You, Radaszam and Historia-7 all board the recovered jinsul starship. The dark-blue interior of the ship is dimly lit with glowing purple lights that run in lines along the corridors, which cut away at strange angles through the mazelike interior of the ship. The journey is less-than-comfortable; everything aboard the cramped ship was designed to meet the needs of jinsul physiology.

From the moment Radaszam brings the ship online, the autopilot engages. Without further prompting by the pilot, the ship effortless leaves the docking bay and moves off. With a brief shudder, the ship engages its Drift engine, and the blackness of the world outside is replaced with the aurora of the Drift. After 2 days of travel, the stolen jinsul starship disengages the Drift engine and emerges on the outskirts of the Scoured Stars system.

Approaching what briefly appears to be a planetoid, you see that it’s not a stellar object—it’s a bustling spherical starbase hundreds of miles across. Jinsul starships, some the size of the one captured by the Starfinders, and some many times that size, busily move in and around through the many maintenance and loading docks that dot the outside of the base.

As the starship nears the base, a blinding flash of purple light emerges from a docking bay on one of the base’s upper quadrants and locks on to the jinsul ship. The ship quakes and trembles for a moment as the autopilot disengages and the starbase’s tractor beam slowly brings the starship down toward the docking bay. Radaszam speaks from the captain's seat. "We'll prepare the explosives and follow up with you once you've cleared the route. Stay safe, stay hidden. The comms line will remain live."

***

Mechanical arms reach out and grab the starship from the space just outside of the maintenance dock, and the tractor beam disengages. The starship is ferried through a long, rectangular room, past dozens of other identical starships and placed on the ground by doors that seem to lead farther inside. Fully automated robots busily attend to the other starships in the dock, some of which show damage from heavy firefights.

You stealthily disembark and hustle down the nearest corridor. The entire base is dimly lit, with only feeble guidelights along the footpaths. Eventually you reach a ceramic polymer door with a clear glass pane in the middle.

Engineering (kit): 1d20 + 15 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 15 + 4 = 28

And with a hiss, the doors slide open, with an audible clatter of surprise from the jinsuls as their dozens of eyes focus on your entry with shrinking pupils!

SerDol leaps into action, rushing into the room, undoubtedly startling both the jinsuls and likely the rest of the group, the Kasatha taking advantage of their surprise to run up next to one of them, then moves around it to block its path out. Quickly analyzing one of them for a weak spot, he swung with his baton to try to take it down as quickly as possible. Then he looks back to the sealed door behind him. "Let's try to block their escape, shall we?"

Okay, it looks like M'Shak never signed in on my original spreadsheet, which is part of why there is as much confusion on my end right now as there is. We can still roll with 7 PCs, now Jerix's info is in the slides. Chivix is also stuck in Chronicle limbo at the moment (which I forgot), so we'll proceed with this encounter without them and get them back in afterwards.

For those new to PbP, combat works kind of like everyone delays in the bolded initiative order to match with the order of posting. Not ideal, but it gets us by and keeps things moving. If you're double-bolded, you may post in both rounds, just indicate the order of your actions; clarifying your use of actions in ooc text makes my job a lot easier, as does clarfiying the color of the target you're attacking. As a rule, more information per post is always better.

For now, while Chivix is in a holding pattern, Jerix will act on Chivix's initiative.

SerDol rushes in ahead and clocks the jinsul with his baton, bruising multiple eyes and leaving it disoriented!

As soon as the Kasatha operative dashes in, V'rax follows close behind, engaging the same enemy as SerDol but standing perilously between both enemies, hoping to garner the full attention of both. Brandishing his advanced sword, its red plasma gleams with thirst, ready to be slaked by the blood and guts of its enemies.

With a flurry of attacks from the various Starfinders, the first jinsul drops in a gory mess before it can even react. Chris -- Apologies. I thought pre-emptive would help you get things done faster. I'll just wait for you going forward.

V'rax grunts quietly through his open mouth as the last remnants of life escape the now motionless carcass of the remaining Jinsul. He stares for a moment. That's another one, of countless thousands...

Quickly eyeing their surroundings to ensure there are no other enemies nearby, he stows his weapons and then grins again, breaking off a piece of the Jinsul husk to chew. "Mmmm, crrrunchhhy prrrey," he says in a low voice, chuckling as he glances at his Shirren companions. "But a bug isss a bug, eh?"

He packs into his Starfinder backpack anything that the other team members don't want or can't carry, including the UPBs for use by the mechanics later. He hands the comm unit to Jerix and M'Shak. "We may want to lisssten."

The Vesk then quickly takes up a crouched position next to the eastern door, plasma array gun back in hand and ready to proceed through the rest of the station.

Jerix has little difficulty rigging the comm unit, but since none of you speak the jinsuls' language the spying device is of limited value. You are able to pick up on snippets of the harsh language over time, however, slowly but surely piecing together fragments of the guttural language.

Speaking of listening in, your regular comm units flare to life with Radaszam and Historia-7's voices. The vesk faction leader speaks. "Agents, we can hear you. V'rax'l'striss, I can't believe I have to say this, but please don't eat the jinsuls. We don't know if their skins are poisonous and we can't afford having to get you medical help...also, gross."

Historia-7 cuts in. "Please send me the stealth tech data you found, as well as the coordinates of the jinsuls' next targets. These details are very valuable to our ongoing resistance efforts against the hierocracy. I must say, I'm unfamiliar with a cultural practice of vesk eating their fallen foes."

Radaszam: "It's not unheard of. A crass intimidation tactic used by some, though certainly not shared throughout the Veskarium. I saw it among some Society allies during the war games I organized last month."

Historia-7: "I've heard nothing but good things about your war-game scenarios. My Dataphiles agents who participated said they were vivid and realistic."

Radaszam: "Why thanks. I've been pushing to use real combat scenarios rather than the vidgame simulations the Forum saddles me with, but I can make anything work. Also, I'm impressed you jumped on this off-the-books assignment. I thought you Dataphiles were all about desk jobs and number crunching. Your drive here is appreciated. Anyway, agents, keep moving!"

All doors except the ones in the southeast corner of the map are locked with key card readers (hardness 10, HP 60, break DC 30, Engineering DC 28). The hallway is dimly lit.
