Roldala identifies that what initially appeared to be surface erosion turns out to actually have been caused by some kind of release of powerful holy energy.
Cervantes, with the aid of Lutorinus, is able to identify not only that the holy symbol can be removed from the sarcophagus, but that it is made of near perfect silver for the use in a holy ritual.
You have now gleaned enough information to know for certain that some kind of ritual happened here, but that it seems it never actually completed.
Depending on what you do with that Vellum that Lutorinus and Busta found, you could possibly discover how to complete the ritual; though, the last person to do that ended up dead. You have her sword.

Busta looks around and says, "Welp, I have no idea what to do next. Anyone else have any ideas?"

"Where there some tracks further back? Let's have a look at those."
Busta Jawz

Lutorinus and Busta find a piece of old vellum on the ground while examining the walls (oops, called for the wrong check on the walls.). The vellum appears to be the same age as the sword.
K. Two different checks left in this room:
1. Knowledge (Engineering) or Survival to know what's caused the walls to be in this state.
2. Appraise to identify anything about the holy symbol.
Busta shrugs his shoulders. "Looks old but I don't know what it is. I'm just a tavern bouncer... Well, a bouncer who wrestled down a dragon!!
"But this piece of paper? I haven't got a clue. Any ideas, Lutty? If not, sure, let's go check out those tracks..."
Lutorinus Exsuberia
|
Lutorinus rolls his eyes at the nickname, but takes the vellum anyways. "I can inspect this on our way to the tracks," he insists. After looking it over, he wordlessly passes it to Val.

Roldala glares balefully at the disintegrating vellum, and turns away from Lutorinus without a word, heading over to examine the dragon's tracks.

"A ritual I think. But looks like we haven't figured out how to actually do it yet. So hopefully following them dragon tracks will lead to some answers."
| GM XaveTheNerd |
The dragon tracks are easy enough to follow while indoors, but they appear to lead outside. Following the tracks through the terrible rainstorm proves difficult, but Roldala is able to find where they went. At the end of the trail lies an armored skeleton, a corpse to be sure, and unlike what some of you initially think, it doesn't animate.
Roldala Chainbiter
|
Unsentimentally, Roldala searches the skeleton, looking for any heraldry or notes or charms - though anything vellum she leaves for someone else to ruin.
| GM XaveTheNerd |
The skeleton's armor is still in decent shape, though it has lost any magic it once had. It looks like that of a samurai; in fact, it looks like the one in the image from Venture Captain Besnik's book.
The corpse also has a scabbard just as rusty and worn as the sword, and upon testing, the sword does fit almost perfectly into the scabbard.
There are traces of how the person died, if you'd like to attempt a heal check.
Lutorinus Exsuberia
|
"Perhaps restoring what's left of this corpse to the sarcophagus would be worth our while. Dreadful things tend to transpire when people are relocated from their final place of rest," Lutorinus notes.

Elyse is able to identify the cause of death as that of a burst of holy energy.
K. That's honestly all the information you get from that, apparently.
Roldala Chainbiter

Roldala looks up at the cleric with an ugly twist to her lips. "This ritual might be dangerous for you to finish, Lutorinus. That part of your contract with the Society?"
Lutorinus Exsuberia
|
"Excessive endangerment brings me more currency to fund my goals and if the ritual ends my life, I already know who will claim my soul," Lutorinus explains cooly, but clearly a touch irked by her statement. "Can you say the same? You strike me as a Gorumite, but who is to say that Groetus or Calistria might decide you'd do better in their domain? Hmph, what a shame," he continues, jabbing back at the Half-Orc. Though I admit the premature snuffing of my life would be... unfortunate. I loathe when the help make a decent point, they tend to overstay their welcome shortly thereafter.

Nice one Roldala XD I am with Busta, next room and hope for the best! Sorry if I screwed us out of our primary prestige y'all :/

Lutorinus is aware of a small cubbyhole near the ceiling in the room, with some bronze object peeking out of it.
Roldala Chainbiter

Roldala's face contorts as Lutorinus makes his guesses. "Do I seem like I'm looking for some Calistrian prick? And Gorum may be strong, but in the end, his iron is used for chains as well as swords. I know what happens when I die. That's just the last chain breaking."
Thanks. I'm enjoying our sparring :-)
Gotta show off that -4 Diplomacy somehow!
Lutorinus Exsuberia
|
Lutorinus rolls his eyes at Roldala and walks away. If anything, you need more chains. A cage even, you brute.
As he walks with the others to the next room, he attempts to piece the crumbled vellum back together with his divine will. Glancing up from his work, he spies a glint of bronze by the ceiling. "Someone be a dear and fetch that, I'm busy saving this expedition from ruin," he says, dripping with arrogance.
________
Me too! :D GM, 10 minute casting time for Make Whole. Idk how long the walk was, but presumably we could have waited for Lutorinus to finish casting the spell before moving on.
Busta Jawz

"Hmmm... Let's see about grabbing that item... This may take a while..."

Busta, with the help of Cervantes, gets the strange bronze artifact. It appears to be a warrior's plea, asking for strength and courage when facing the final moments of life. It appears to be some kind of chant, as it has a notable rhythm when read.
Lutorinus finished piecing together the vellum, which has the same information except for the last word on the parchment appears damaged. Or maybe intentionally messed up?
You now have all the pieces needed to complete the ritual.
Now what?
Cervantes DeLeon
|
Have we made sure no one is around to interrupt us? Then let's get back to the ritual room and make sure the Tyrant stays locked away.
Busta Jawz

Busta looks over at Val Covan and Lutorinus then says, "So, how about you big brains do the ritual thingy, yah? The sooner the better because once we're done, I do believe Lutty over there owes us all several rounds of drinks!! Courtesy of a tied up dragon a few rooms over! HA!! Ale, beer, spirits, wine for all!!!!"
Bust grins gleefully at the thought of free alcohol...
Trade Prince Val Covan

"Sooo. This ritual apparently killed that last ritualler, the warrior's plea gives me a sacrificial vibe, and we really don't really know how or why the last attempt went so poorly..."

"The lure of free booze at the end of the ritual isn't enough...?" queries Busta looking somewhat confused.
Lutorinus Exsuberia

"Ugh, before we get all sentimental, let's make sure we've left no stone unturned in this dump. It would be a waste for the ritual to go awry due to a lack of diligence," Lutorinus points out. So excitable, all for some liquid courage!
________
I say we just roll through the remaining rooms before figuring the ritual out. Is there actual text to the vellum? Does the chant fill in th blanks on the vellum?
Setare Katsu
|
”I ... I am ready to pa... participate... what do you need?!“
Roldala Chainbiter

Reluctantly, Roldala nods at Lutorinus's plan. "Anything we don't find first will definitely bite us once the ritual starts."
Busta Jawz
|
"Alrighty then!! First, we explore the remaining rooms. Then the brainy ones do the ritual. And lastly.....DRINKS ON LUTTY!!!!" Busta darts off to the next room....
I've moved our tokens to the next room.
| GM XaveTheNerd |
Via a combination of the vellum and the chant, you're collectively able to piece together the chant with certainty.
In this new room there are more rusty beds, and that's it.
However, the room that shoots off to the right has shelves of weapons and armor racks that lines the walls int his small chamber. Th eracks are well=stocked with tarnished and broken equipment.
Moved Busta into the room. What do?
Busta Jawz
|
Are there any unexplored areas left? The very bottom of the map is just the entrance, right? If that's unexplored and has anything significant, we'll go there. Otherwise Busta will say...
"Welp, nothing much here. Shall we finish the ritual and move on to Lutty's favorite activity? Kekeke!"

Roldala's eyes dart furtively from corner to corner before she reluctantly admits it may be time to move on.

The room contains:
One of each weapon and armor from the core rulebook, though they all have the broken condition.
Nothing is magical, though.
The bottom actually does have a few rooms. I'll double check you received everything you should have once I get home from work today.

Just in case if there's anything relevant in those rooms, I've moved our tokens to that area.
| GM XaveTheNerd |
Sweeping the rest of the dungeon proves no problem, aside from the occasional person tripping on sprung traps in the large room.
Completing the ritual that failed before seems daunting, but using the information you gathered, you manage to put together a decent ritual, supplemented by Lutorinus' knowledge of such things (for better or worse) and you're able to feel a burst of non-deadly holy energy upon successfully completing the ritual.
Upon leaving the place, the air is surprisingly warm for a place that had recently been under near blizzard amounts of sleet, and you all hurriedly get back to the lodge where, as promised, Lutorinus buys everyone a well earned drink.
Besnik congratulates you on finding the crusader's blade and, most importantly, on successfully completing the ritual. He takes special care to congratulate Busta for his dragon grappling feat, making sure to send word to Absalom ahead of his arrival.
End of scenario.
Thanks for dealing with all the hiccups there. Graduating and moving to a new job was a much bigger change than I expected. Hopefully, if you'll have me as a GM again, I'm GMing a much more, well, normally written scenario that doesn't have everything scattered across a dozen or so pages. Chronicles to come today or tomorrow.

"So hey Lutty, I think I'll have a brown ale please! No wait, a stout! Errr.. actually, a wheat beer! On fourth thought, a porter! Oh right, pale ale is the way to go!! Hmmm... perhaps some spirits instead...a nice rum!!! Uh no...how's about a brandy!! Or whiskey?? Ah, right...let's go with a lager! Uhhh... Hey I think I got it right the first time. "That's for my first drink!! And for my second......"
Busta proceeds to wear out Lutorinus' ear talking through another dozen alcoholic drinks..... then another... then another...
