I'm more or less inclined to start doing that in the games I run, unless the players do take actions 'during combat' to save one of them for a reason (for example, asking to question one of them after they've painted the town red with them is a big no)

It is a house rule, Esmaralda - one mostly born of a desire to not have to roll stabilization rolls and track negative HP for unnamed NPCs. However, if the players say something along the lines of "I want to stabilize the dying so we can take them prisoner" or something like that, I might leave them alive, just unconscious, unless they were felled by a critical hit or some kind of highly damaging spell.

Hag to be? I'll have you know she's just an old woman with a criminal mindset who may possess some sort of spellcasting powers. Hardly reason to call her a hag.

If you wouldn't mind I'd like to keep the very frail Esmaralda at the back. She has no melee or ranged capability, except the occasional hex (which is situational as per Rodrigo here).

I *highly* recommend frail people go near the middle. The back puts you in prime position to get ambushed. I have seen more than one frail caster get completely ganked in the first round that way.

Almost always a good idea to have the healer within easy reach of the rest of the party. :)
Hey all. I'm going to need to take a little time away from the boards. I probably won't be back until after the new year. Some personal things have come to a head in my life and I need to take care of those and myself.
Don't worry, I'm alright. I'm in good health, well physically anyway. I'm working on the mental and emotional side of things. Part of that means taking a break from this and focusing on me and improving myself. I hope to be back soon, but I don't know how soon soon is. I will be back, though.

I will probably be radio silent for the next few days, then back again on Monday. After that I will probably only be able to post sporadically until January 4. Not travel, just a 1 year old, and my wife has to work.

Y'know, I'm actually looking forward to everyone's reactions to Kiley after the fight. I think this will be Cam's, Esmaralda's, and Tellanya's first time seeing her tail and fangs.

I hope I don't come off as "woe is me" or passive-aggressive, or anything like that with this. I'm just hoping to get some feedback on how to make the game more enjoyable for everyone while still playing Kiley like I think she'd act.
I know I can have a tendency to steal the show, so to speak, and hog the limelight, and while I hope I haven't done that here, I'm worried that I have, especially in the past couple of scenes. Don't get me wrong, Kiley's supposed to be a chatty, charming performer when she's not worried about how others will react to her or busy trying, and often failing, to not have a panic attack at the thought of facing something that's undead. I love banter and exploring characters and playing off other characters. Some of my favorite moments in playing TTRPGs have been due to characters growing or learning about themselves. Still, I don't want to shoulder people out and trample on their fun.
That said, I think Kiley would be having a meltdown right now and begging the party not to go back to the Wreck, but I don't want to hold things up, and as I've said, I'm worried that I'm being a bit too, um, forceful, I guess, with how I present Kiley. I feel like I might be elbowing others out or ignoring them without realizing it, as odd as that might seem. Maybe it's my anxiety talking, but that's how I've been feeling for a little while now. If y'all feel like I've been shouldering you out, please let me know. I'd rather fix the issue than let it fester, even if it means I have to rethink Kiley a bit.
Sorry if this is a bit rambling. I needed to get it off my chest and out there in the open. I honestly want to know if I am causing an issue, even if it isn't much of one, so I can fix it. Thanks for hearing me out if you've made it this far.

You should know by now that it doesn't bother me at all.
Of course, there will be times it might not be appropriate (mostly just to move things along), and I'm sure it'll get brought up, but for the most part I've never had an issue with it.
Kiley is an awesome character, for her strengths and flaws both. Keep at it, I say.
I think it’s fine to have a phobia on your character. I also think that in such situations it’s a good idea to have a sense of how your character could be motivated to continue. I think characters are capable of more than we expect and we should resist easy impulses to pin the down. A phobia might pull a character back, but what else is pushing them forward? People are dynamic messes of motivations and shifting priorities, so calling upon that in characters is both true to life and allows for more flexibility.
I bring this up because a bit of flexibility is required with a group of other players. While in fiction you right on your own, you can always write other characters as stopping to comfort someone else, you can’t make that assumption in pbp. With the current situation as an example, Cam would be just as fine shrugging and saying she could stay behind, as she doesn’t see a need to force her. This is dangerous work and the stakes at least appear comparatively low at the moment. Now, as time goes on and we build more rapport and cohesion as a group, that might change. She’d happily take up a mentorship role in that regard.
Full disclosure: I like self-possessed, independent characters. They are just the most compelling to me. And vice-versa, shrinking violets just do nothing for me. It’s a perfectly fine character trait and I don’t have a problem with it, but it doesn’t get me invested or excited. So if you notice any ambivalence on my end towards that aspect of Kiley, that’s why.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I understand the ambivalence, and I'm not going to hold that against you, Cam. To be honest, I'm okay with others in the party not particularly liking that aspect of Kiley. it's a weakness, and given how consuming the panic normally is when it hits, it's not a minor one. I just didn't want to take over the scene when more important things are on the agenda. I don't want people to change their characters just to humor me, either. I was mainly worried about getting on other player's nerves with how I was playing Kiley.
Cam, I'll take what you said and try my best to apply it. I'm also hoping to show off a few more of Kiley's traits as the opportunities arise. Don't worry, she's not exactly a trick pony. :)
