Adyr hopes that even a pin-prick will discourage this foul beast from seeking more prey...

Season of Ghosts

Sheela tries unsuccessfully to calm the crowd and get them under control again but her voice is lost in the din and no one pays her any heed. Up on the top of the lighthouse Adyr leans over the railing and fires off a bow shot at...

...the green tentacle! It sinks deeply into dark, rubbery flesh and the Garundi man is certain that he sees the tentacle flinch with pain...but it doesn't withdraw.

Yes, I'll allow for everyone downstairs to hear you if you begin singing/orating.

Down on the second level anyone looking to the west notices the Green Tentacle suddenly seem to flinch and quiver, as though with pain, but it does not release its prisoner. McKieg and Wadi, caught up amid some of the crowd, have to fight to keep their footing...

Crowd Trip vs. McKieg: 1d20 ⇒ 10

...and manage to do so!

"Oh god, heeeeelp! Help me!" screams the man caught in Red Tentacle's grasp, his hands clawing uselessly at the stone floor as he's slowly, inexorably pulled towards the watery stairwell. The elderly woman caught by the Purple Tentacles flails weakly at her captor with her free arm while the young girl attempts to dig in her heels to keep herself from being dragged out through the western window by the Green Tentacle!

Wadi's eyes widen as he sees the tentacles assault the panicked crowds. I was just taking a wild guess there!

"GET YOUR BLOODY HANDS OFF ME!!" He screams at the top of his lungs, allowing his fiery blood to flow faster within his veins. Soon his body is glowing with a ruddy reddish glow!

Activate Fires of Hell as a swift action. Wadi's body is now glowing as a torch.

He then struggles to elbow his way through the panicked crowd...once he emerges from the villagers he takes quick note of the situation. Realizing a fireball would do vastly more harm than good here (though he must admit, it was a close call) he decides on a more focused approach here, sending a burning lance of fire into the rubbery tentacle!

Season of Ghosts

Luurg springs into action, swimming upward towards the Red Tentacle which seems to be slowly withdrawing back into the watery stairwell. Leafy in hand, he takes a stab at the monstrous thing but it proves surprisingly hard to strike!

Up above there's a fresh wave of panicked shrieks and cries as Wadi taps into his hellish birthright and begins to glow brightly as though he were the very essence of fire and flame itself! Several of the villagers do fall back from him, allowing him room to maneuver and fire off a bright beam of magical energy at Green...

Season of Ghosts

I can see there's some confusion about what's happening in this encounter and some of that is my fault so I'll try to clarify some things over in Discussion.

McKieg bravely charges forward, calling upon Yueral to guide his axe as he brings it down upon Red Tentacle in a powerful strike, completely severing it! The man kicks himself free of the twitching piece of flesh, madly crawling along the floor to get away from the stairwell.

Down below, Tiffany and Luurg see the Red Tentacle suddenly shudder violently and withdraw itself from the second level and back down through the stairwell; as it does both of them can see that it appears to have been cleanly severed by a blade of some sort.

With no other tentacles or enemies within immediate sight, Friendly Shark is forced to circle hungrily while Tiffany pulls herself up the stairs and out of the water, emerging onto the second level. She's greeted by the sight of pandemonium - Wadi glowing like the fires of Hell itself, villagers log-jammed on the stairs leading up to the top level, McKieg standing over the severed half of Red Tentacle and two villagers caught in the grasp of two other Tentacles, one at the eastern window and one at the west. Without really stopping to think the sassy grippli opens her mouth wide and spits a snowball at the Green Tentacle, which seems to already be injured. As it splats against the tentacle a small section of it seems to freeze solid and simply snaps off! The villager that had been in its grasp, a young teenage girl, sobs with relief as she staggers away from the window.

Unfortunately, time runs out for the old woman caught by the Purple Tentacle as it suddenly coils around her body and yanks her out the eastern window and into the darkness of the storm before she even has time to scream...

With no other immediate threats in sight both Wadi and Luurg take the time to bolster themselves with their respective magics, Wadi summoning a shield of protection and Luurg chowing down on a power-up fig.

Having been informed that at least one villager was taken by the colossal sea beast, Luurg then nervously peers into the dark waters for any signs of her but sees nothing except for the undulating body of the tentacled horror and a sea of tentacles...once of which suddenly shoots upwards along the northern side of the lighthouse! Those inside see another tentacle suddenly come whipping in through the northern window, grabbing up another villager, while Adyr can see the tentacle come surging out of the depths and reach into the lighthouse from his position at the top.

So she decides to do something stupid.

She runs up to the tentacle holding Wadi and slaps it. "Learn some manners! At least ask before approaching!"

Laughing Touch (Sp): At 1st level, you can cause a creature to burst out laughing for 1 round as a melee touch attack. A laughing creature can only take a move action but can defend itself normally. Once a creature has been affected by laughing touch, it is immune to its effects for 24 hours. You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Charisma modifier.

No idea if the octopus will be affected, but Sheela doesn't even have time to pull out her wand of Burning Hands.

Season of Ghosts

For lack of any better ideas Sheela darts up to Tentacle Orange and gives it a good, hard slap that sends its rubbery flesh to jiggling just a little bit. Unfortunately, neither her words of chastisement or the traces of magic in her touch seem to have any affect.

Up above, the sounds of the terrified crowd can still be heard but at least they're not causing any further clogs or congestion on the second level...

Season of Ghosts

Though initially a bit startled by the appearance of Tentacle Cyan - didn't he just sever this one? - McKieg swiftly regains his composure and rewards the tentacled horror for its intrusion by cleanly relieving it of another appendage. Even amid the screams of the villagers and the howling of the storm outside you can all hear a high-pitched, keening cry and the remaining tentacle that you can see seems to hesitate for just a moment before resuming its search for a victim.

Tiffany and her shark friend attempt to tag-team this remaining tentacle from above and below but continue to find themselves having trouble striking it. For such a large tentacle, it sure is agile!

On the other hand, Adyr's bow shot from above proves more successful and sinks deeply into Tentacle Yellow! The fleshy appendage doubles up on itself for a moment, shaking, and you get the distinct impression that the sea beast is shaking its metaphorical fist.

Tentacle Yellow: 1d20 ⇒ 7
Tentacle Yellow vs. Luurg (Grapple): 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (3) + 14 = 17

It then lashes out at Luurg and attempts to grab hold of him, but the beefy half-orc has no trouble batting the injured tentacle away.

Up above, the remainder of the Blackcove villagers huddle tightly together as far away from the railing as they can get. Luurg informs the sea beast that it needs to keep its tentacles to itself, in a roundabout way, as he tries to finish the job Adyr started and sever the rest of the tentacle. Unfortunately Leafy misses the mark once more, pinging harmlessly against the stone floor.

Wadi, on the other hand, fares much better as he peppers the thing with arcane missiles. The bolts connect at the weak point where Adyr's arrow stands buried in the flesh and finish the tentacle off!

Lightning flashes outside and those on the second floor see a flash of movement as another tentacle streaks past the northern window, reaching all the way to the top of the lighthouse! A split second later, a fresh wave of screams are heard from above...

Adyr, the only one in the party up on the top of the lighthouse, suddenly sees one of the massive tentacles come whipping over the railing to the north and grab hold of a young boy!

There is currently only one tentacle on the map but two icons to represent its position relative to the 2nd and top levels. Also, to give an idea of size, these tentacles have a 30 ft. reach~

Working together Adyr, McKieg, and Tiffany are able to beat, chop, and arrow Tentacle Pink into nothing more than a pile of bloody, mushy flesh! The boy that it had taken hold of staggers back to the arms of his mother and father, who clutch him tightly, sobbing with relief.

Another eerie, high-pitched screech reverberates through the air and then you all see the remainder of the writhing tentacles withdraw into the water and vanish. The wind and the rain outside quickly begin to die down and the water that fills the lower level of the lighthouse recedes as quickly as it came. In just a few moments the sea beast and the unnatural storm that preceded it are gone and a strange quiet falls over the lighthouse, broken only by the whimpers and sobs of the Blackcove villagers.

Season of Ghosts

With the danger seemingly over, for now, everyone shakily begins to congregate at the top of the lighthouse while Sheela sends Aquas out into the waters to look for any sign of the sea beast or the old woman. Though Adyr attempts his best to try and triage the large group of villagers it's a near-impossible task. Some huddle together in small family groups, crying, while many others simply plop down on the ground or stare out at the waters in a daze.

"H-here...let me help," Adyr hears a trembling voice as Lira kneels down next to him, her eyes the only sparks of color in her face.

Meanwhile, Nick weaves through the crowd over to McKieg. Though his expression is calm and his tone even, he maintains a white-knuckle grip on the haft of his axe.

"By the gods, I don't know what that thing was but I know it would've taken a lot more than what it did if it weren't for you folks. Every man, woman, and child here owes you their lives, I'm certain of it," he says, taking one hand off his weapon to shake McKieg's hand.

"You think magic might've had a hand in that then?" Nick continues, looking to Luurg. "It sure weren't natural, I know that much."
