Travail
|
Travail pulls a flask of alchemical fire out his pack move action and shouts to his fellow Pathfinders:
"Anyone else have anything to fight the swarm? If not, we're in a jam! Aurus can't fight this battle alone. Mao, maybe you can slap at them with your open fists?"
His odds at hitting the swarm at this range while entangled slim, Travail uses a Varisian parlor trick to attempt to free himself from the vines move action as standard action:
Escape Artist - Dexterity Penalty from Entanglement: 1d20 + 8 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 8 - 2 = 12
Laughing at his predicament, and remembering his first encounter with a fey, Travail winks at the fairy across the battlefield and hums a woodsman's tune. free action
Aid Assist Other, Diplomacy: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (17) - 2 = 15
| GM Auke |
"Anyone else have anything to fight the swarm?"
Slapping spiders doesn't have any effect , but: 1. Mao bought some alchemist's fire and acid last adventure (but he hasn't put them in his inventory) and 2. Cloudia also has splash weapons (but she ran so far away from the spiders she'll have a hard time hitting them).
Cloudia

Another fine tactic for dealing with swarms is to run from them, which is probably why the tactics for this guy includes that dang entangle. Had I been playing a different character, however, I would have burnt these things to a crisp. Cloudia, however, well... Perhaps in a level or two she will gain confidence and lose a few fears.

Yah, I was saving the vials for after the diplomacy attempt.
| GM Auke |
"Well... If you aren't here to kill all the fey, then Cyflynder lied! I don't want to be in his gang anymore! But... now I'm all alone again. Oh, wait! I can create another friend!"
She pulls a small, fuzzy ball out of a gray bag and throws it on the ground.
GBOT: 1d100 ⇒ 29
The fur ball changes into a bat and flies up to the fey. They seem to talk to each other.
The fey turns back to the party.
"With animals you can talk, but not with vermin like those spiders. You really should kill those!"
Cloudia
|
"I have some acid and fire flasks, but I'm too far away."
strength check: 1d20 ⇒ 8
"How long before they're gone!? Can't you get rid of them? You summoned them!" she adds accusingly.
Cloudia continues to struggle against the entangle but fails.
"Or this wild weed spell?"
| GM Auke |
"How long before they're gone!? Can't you get rid of them? You summoned them!" she adds accusingly.
"No, I didn't! Cyflynder cast a shatter on the rotten log they lived in! Then he went away." the fey replies.
"I did cast the entangle!" the fey adds, glowing with pride.
"I'll get rid of it as soon as I can!"
AKA: After the spiders have acted.

Thanks for the bot, totally missed somehow that I was up - and I wound up catching something this weekend, so I was a little bit out of commission.
Having turned on the charm for the fey, Aurus is back in battle-mode down on the ground. He stares at the shifting carpet of arachnids, trying not to remember the feeling of them finding their way into the joints and cracks in his armor. "C'mon, Goldson, someone's gotta haul that gnome outta there," he says, getting ready to run into the fray and rescue the illusionist.
Check-in post, but if Lukian's still in spider-reach, Aurus is going to be trying to get him out of there on his turn.
| GM Auke |
Fast Forwarding!
Mao takes a flask of acid and puts it down in the square next to him.
The spider swarm moves over Aurus again favoring the bigger human over the smaller gnome.
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
fortsave Aurus: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10 Fail!
Strength damage: 1d2 ⇒ 2
The fey drops the entangle.
Distraction save Aurus: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 Fail!
Poison Save Aurus: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19 Succes!
Nausiated Aurus moves out of the swarm.
Lukian steps towards the acid flask, picks it up and throws it at the swarm.
to hit: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 Misses, but the splashdamage still manages to deal a bit of damage
Mao takes an alchemist's fire, steps into postion and throws
to hit: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13 Misses, but the splashdamage still manages to deal a bit of damage
Travail moves in and throws his flask
to hit: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 Misses, but the splashdamage still manages to deal a bit of damage
Cloudia moves a bit closer and draws a flask of alchemist's fire.
Cloudia
|
The terrified Cloudia will pull out 2 alchemist fires but not throw either. At 40' (or is it 30', the swarm is on the move in Roll20! If so, she will move back instead of forward and keep 40' between it an her.) she would almost certainly miss.
"Here's an alchemist fire if anyone wants it." she announces in a shaky voice.
If anyone wants to, they can take the vial from her hand.
Travail

Can we not have our GM roll for us anymore, LOL.
Travail pulls a flask of acid out of his pack move action, and moves closer to the swarm move action as standard action.
Aurus Goldson

Aurus keeps his head down and covered as the party throws alchemist fires around him. His 'performance,' as it were, is a series of pantomimes of various ways to more safely throw the alchemist fires, including underhand. He winces with each near miss.
| GM Auke |
Fast Forwarding
Cloudia steps closer to Aurus
Lukian delays
Gire sends her bat into the swarm!
The swarm attacks the bat
damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4 the bat is slain and fades away.
Aurus continues his performance, takes one of the flasks from Cloudia and throws it at the swarm.
To Hit: 1d20 + 3 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 3 + 1 - 2 = 22 HITS!
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
+50% makes 7
Swarm burns to a crisp!
Combat is over!

"One less question in a second... ever been blessed by Apsu, Gire?"
Aurus makes a few hand motions towards the atomie.
Detect Evil :)
Travail

Feeling a little drained from the fight, not to mention having lost his lunch, Travail pulls out his wand of cure light wounds, looks around sheepishly, and attempts to use it on himself.
Use Magic Device: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
And it works! "Aurus, do you need this, or do you have your own?"
Thus cured, Travail looks with amazement at Gire. "That entangle really got us! You make a great addition to a gang. Yes, we have lots of questions. Who is this Cyflinder who covered us in spiders? And also, is there a stream around here where I can clean up?"
Cloudia
|
Cloudia shudders, again.
"Horrible."
She looks guiltily at the ones that got covered by and bitten by the spiders.
"Do you know where the druid, Hemzel, is? Cyflinder said it was too late for him. What did he mean?"
| GM Auke |
Who is this Cyflinder who covered us in spiders?
“Cyflynder is a great, bold fey. He’s promised to clear the Verduran Forest of the scum who stole ourheritage. I think he is cruel—it would be better if you fled on your own, wouldn’t it?”
"Do you know where the druid, Hemzel, is? Cyflinder said it was too late for him. What did he mean?"
“Cyflymder said Hemzel was going to lead the humans to destroy the fey! So we pounced and surprised him. Cyflymder and his brutes tore the druid apart. His poor wolf friend too! So much blood!”
Travail
|
"That's terrible," says Travail. "We came to talk to Hemzel about an item of interest to the Pathfinders, and now he's dead. I wonder if you can take us to where he was murdered. We should at least give him a decent burial."
| GM Auke |
"That's terrible," says Travail. "We came to talk to Hemzel about an item of interest to the Pathfinders, and now he's dead. I wonder if you can take us to where he was murdered. We should at least give him a decent burial."
"Item of interest? What's that? Is it the smooth rock Cyflymder took from the druid after he killed him?"
Aurus Goldson
|
Aurus takes the wand. "Sorry, Travail, I keep meanin' to get my own..."
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
"Oh lordy that feels way better!" He flexes his arms and sheathes his sword. He looks at Gire. "Clyflymder, huh? Real mouthful. Let's go make acquaintances."
Auke Teeninga

I wonder if you can take us to where he was murdered. We should at least give him a decent burial."
"His body is still in his cabin over there" and Gire points at the hut.
You notice that the smoke coming from the building is no longer confined to the chimney — the walls of the hut are starting
to smolder.
Cloudia
|
If I was a more prepared pathfinder I would have bought something to put out fires.
Cloudia runs over to the burning building. If the door is open she looks inside, if not she opens it.
| GM Auke |
Cloudia opens the door:
The heat is palpable inside the primitive, one-room hovel. Tinder from the fireplace is strewn about, sparking the fires that now climb the reed walls. The room itself is in shambles. An eviscerated human body sprawls across the floor, and a butchered wolf lies against the wall by the front door. Puddles of blood surround them. The man’s hands are tied to a rough wooden table, upon which sits an ornate—but empty—box and a blood-spattered manuscript.
Cloudia Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Mao Initiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21

Lukian Initiative: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
Aurus Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
