What Have We Done? (Inactive)

Game Master Ace Matthews

It is that time of year again! Walking Dead is back on, I'm kinda bored with schoolwork, and I'm finally comfortable enough with the numbers and stuff to run my own homebrew!

So like I said, Zombie apocalypse. Not just zombies though, Necromorphs, mutating beasts, Pseudomagical creatures and opponents, and enough survivors to make for a balanced Roleplay and Combat game!

The big Part is that this takes place in the "Real World" and not Golarion. I'll literally be taking screenshots from Google Maps and such. That said, nearly every class and race is acceptable per approval. Allow me to explain: You are all normal humans, nothing special, no significant class or racial distinction, in fact you begin the campaign at what I'm calling Level 0. You are special, though, in that you have a rare genetic anomaly that makes you a candidate for a genetic super soldier infusion.

I am a major numbers guy, and I have as many house rules as I've ever seen. That said, I know Pathfinder, and all my little adjustments do make sense. For instance, rolling a d20 plus a stat mod is an extremely wide variance of results and extremely low variance between players. Therefore some things are rolled low variance, like a DC17 d6+STR check. A character with a STR of ten couldn't do it at all, but one with 16 or higher is automatic success because someone that strong could indeed open the stuck door with little effort.

Also, This is a Sci-fi campaign with fantasy undertones. Magic casters are allowed, but every ability has to be Flavored so that it works in scifi, not magic. no flavor, no spell. Also, the flavor CAN affect the way some abilities may work, so be mindful. And finally, I reserve the right to reject or modify flavor, and I will gladly help you find the right one for your ability!

THE NEW STUFF:
So, what I didn’t really explain was that I have a very unique idea for building characters. Your initial build gives you some individuality and makes all things equalish, but day one changes all of that. At the beginning of "Day One", you receive a primer for your experimental upgrade. Here's the fun part: Your decisions during Day One are what build your Character. It's kinda like rolling your Character, but this is more likely to fit exactly what you want to roleplay. Depending on how it works out, there will be an adjustment grace given at the end of Day one.

That said, you may not get exactly the character you want. It is a good idea to not be extremely attached to your original concept. You may start out with a swashbuckler in mind, trying to build DEX and CHA, but end up with only 15 DEX and 20 CHA, a much better build for a sorcerer or something else depending on your other stats. Also, the SPR stat is going to be standalone. After much consideration, I don't need to give myself one more mechanic to test in this as I'm already altering and testing half the rules anyway.

So here's the nitty Gritty.

The Story:

You live in the modern world, more or less. You see, for the last few years, there have been all these reports on the news of ridiculous things happening. Secret research facilities in Texas and all across the western seaboard somehow making the dead rise. At least that's how it started, contained instances, usually backed with an expert talking about bath salts or some other new fad drug causing the attacks. Then there were a few viral videos of some guy who was completely alive and present tearing into a poor dude's neck and drinking his blood. They get more outlandish from there. Everybody loves the video where the dude that swears he saw a fairy gets autotuned.

It was funny up until the act of war. Recent culture had hyped up apocalyptic scenarios such that the already stressed international relations went haywire. About a year ago, the UN turned the Nuke key. Thermonuclear warheads dropped on Houston Texas as well as a few other places both domestic and international. Half of Texas is irradiated, along with Southern California. The President had managed to stave off all out global nuclear war though, and life was returning to normalcy despite the tragedy. Things got really hush hush on the news after that though. Even the stuff on youtube was going down for BS copyright laws or just plain disappearing.

This is where you come in. It is Spring of 2015. Most of you knew me last semester, by Pathfinder or otherwise. I was, however, abruptly called up in a more or less secret draft. No one really knows why, but it's kept pretty quiet. On this particular day, you all find yourself on campus at a pathfinder game for one reason or another (You don't have to be playing). Then one of you gets a phone call…

Zombies and YOU (Character submission):

I unintentionally implied in the first post that you have to be yourself in this campaign, which is not the case. I do not know or really care who most of you are in real life, this is roleplay for a reason. You are welcome to play yourself, but I don't care what your skills or actual physical abilities are, you're not getting extra ability points or traits. Any backstory is acceptable, from the most mundane to the most outlandish, and I'd like to have a good mix of those. The only caveat is that it can't give you a significant advantage or go against your stats. No billionaire gun aficionados or special forces snipers. Also, you have to have a decent reason to be at a Pathfinder game at Toccoa Falls College with the other characters.

Your Character is on a seven point buy. That is correct, 7. Furthermore, you have yet to make yourself significantly different from other humans (Because your "Race" is actually a genetic modification) therefore do not select a racial bonus to your ability score yet. (No SPR after all, that'll come later. Just six stats) Also you may select two traits and reflavor them to be about your vocation, major, or hobby. I'm not good at remembering drawbacks, but if you have a stellar idea, I'll consider it.

It'll be nice to know what you are going for as a class/race, though, so I can have a party comp in mind. Furthermore, I'd like you to take an ability or spell from that class and flavor it for me as part of your submission. Just a sample bit so that I can get a feel for who wants to flavor and play out the setting and who wants to basically just rename magic :P

As for your selections, all Paizo material is fine, and I just don't have time or patience for reviewing 3rd party materials, so automatic no on those.
You have whatever is on you at the time of the story beginning, and living on campus may give you a little leeway, but I'm assuming that none of you have significant weapons or other adventuring gear.

Guns and ammo will be exceedingly rare and high powered in this campaign, so if you really want to play a gun class, talk to me so that we can see about flavoring the class to still work. I simply recommend the Bolt Ace or Gun scavenger archetypes. (Hey, I'm pretty sure Daryl Dixon is a Bolt Ace)

Languages are real world for the most part. I expect that you all speak fluent English, but no bonus languages yet. You may take Bilingual as a trait (or both traits) but otherwise you speak 'muricanese or English.

Zombies and ME. (About GMSD):

Me as a GM… Well, I've only been playing Pathfinder for about a year now, but my obsessive qualities have pushed me to memorize and scrutinize a huge chunk of the PFSRD. My knack for numbers and mechanics is what gave me the idea to put them together into this type of things, and I reserve the right to modify things such that they sound right to me for a bit. Also, I welcome your criticism on my adjusted mechanics.

I'm a pretty lighthearted GM (My name is GM Space Duck for cryin out loud xD) and I try to throw in bits to keep the mood from being too much of a downer for too long. That said, this has the potential to be a pretty dark game. The more in character you are the better, and once you've seen your best friend try to kill you (Maybe or maybe not eat you), things tend to be a little humorless.

As for my play style, it's all over the place. I will use the map, grid, and turn system, but realistic movements and narrative combat can take precedence if they fit. When in doubt, PM me and ask :)
I will try to keep the dice from outright screwing you, helping you out through the first level or two. In general, however, I kill without conscience or mercy, at least for this campaign. If you die, oh well, we'll figure something out, but no one is sacred, even TPK is not taboo to me. I'm not saying I'll try to kill you, I just won't apologize. Well I probably will but it'll be more of a "There there" than anything xD.

I don't know maps too well yet, but I intend to learn some different tools for them soon. Maps may be Text in boxes at first, then flat maps, followed by full maps with moveable bits. All in good time. As for character sheets, I prefer sheets. Myth-weavers.com/sheets has a pretty cool layout and an easy to edit sheet. I'm a bit of a stat nazi, and I like to be able to check up on things easily. Any format is ultimately fine, so long as I can read it. Also, I watch for rerollers and such and GM karma's a Monday to Friday Biscuit eater if you know what I mean.

Above all, get along with the party and we have a great thing goin!

Well there you have it, I look forward to your submissions and your questions! I'm going to tentatively say the recruiting period will last two weeks from today :)

Have you seen S-cry-ed?

Str 8
Dex 12
Con 10
Int 10
Wis 10
Cha 14

I will be aiming for a summoner who animates junk around him, probably a half elf. I am Blut Davidson. I am a modern artist who works with welding metal. Let me know if you want more.

Applying again I put my SPR under hero points character sheet

How you know me:

A student at the same college but not very social, you might have seen me at a pathfinder game, during classes, or running track.

Str 9
Dex 12
Con 9
Int 13
Wis 12
Cha 12

The character will wind up being whatever makes sense, in the end. The most likely thing, of course, is Daring Champion Cavalier (Dragon). I as a person am -all about- helping others out and having my own personal code of ethics that I don't at all expect others to adhere to.

As a martial character, it doesn't really need to be shifted at all in terms of 'what makes sense'.

On the other hand... if crossclassing is valid, I could totally see picking up a level of Synthesist summoner or more, focusing on maintaining a bit of modular armor tech I scraped up.

I'm not really sure how my character is going to play out, but I intend to base it on me. I like a wide variety of media, and dislike a wide variety, seemingly at random. Anime, Music, Movies, Books, Games and the like. While I'm -not- a collector, I figure just for fun, it'd be pretty funny to have a huge collection of manga in my trunk. Gotta have something to do when you're not having your face gnawed off... right?

For traits: Centered, Supportive, and Theoretical Magician are what I'm leaning towards. All three have viable grounds for why I'd have them... so it'll be hard to drop one out, but I'll pick as I work things out a bit. Theoretical Magician seems the weakest on the 'realism' front, even though I have a huge background in fantasy works. Though... I can't think of a way to RP it without sounding like a moron. "Well, on Charmed, there was this episode where they had to confront..."

Taru as a level 1 Commoner

I could totally add the doubt drawback, which I -most assuredly have-. But I'm not so sure I like the idea of eating a -4 penalty on a skill check every time I screw up. I know it's not much fun at -all- in real life. :P

Updating sheet with your changes new sheet

I plan to turn into a single target assassin so torn between rogue or slayer

RP wise I'll likely focus on base building or setting up areas of defense
and keeping supplies in stock.

also what do you want us to do about skills?

and since I'm building martial I don't really think any of my abilities need to be translated.

A student at the same college but not very social, you might have seen me at a pathfinder game, during classes, or running track.

Monday bump. I'm in Greek class now so I'll read the posts later

Please ignore the character in the profile. I'll need a new pic for him, too.

Background:
Jakob is a sophmore on an athletic scholarship, and is the first in his family to go to college. He's in the same fraternity as the other football players, but he's not that guy. He hates bullying, and is usually able to talk his friends out of that kind of behavior, when he's around. He's big enough that he's usually able to talk strangers out of it too.

Back in high school, he was a straight up nerd. Skinny, weak, picked on mercilessly and constantly. His dad insisted he go out for football and never let him forget that he was on the JV squad. Jakob spent most of his free time gaming with his friends, the fantasy escape of RPGs allowing him to endure the misery of his real life. He got his size (6'4") and weight (225#) the summer before his senior year, and discovered that suddenly people weren't interested in picking on him. He made varsity that year, and showed such promise that TFC awarded him an athletic scholarship. Dad couldn't have been prouder. Jakob was just happy to get out of town.

He is something of an oddity on campus, avoiding becoming a part of a clique, but hanging out with all different people. He's friendly and fun, and will always back up his friends, no matter what.

Stats:

Strength 12
Dexterity 11
Constitution 12
Intelligence 10
Wisdom 10
Charisma 12

Jakob is not the best student in the world, or the worst. He is here on an athletic scholarship and on weekends, he's the life of the party.

Traits:

Resolute (You gain a +1 trait bonus on Will saves against mind-affecting effects, and on Fortitude saves against drugs or poisons.)

Jakob is stubborn as a donkey, and though he takes buckets of drugs

Silent Hunter (You gain a +1 trait bonus on Stealth checks, and Stealth is always a class skill for you.)

He has a knack for coming and going without being noticed. It's how he got his nickname.

class/race:
Human to start with. Thinking of Demon-spawn Tiefling for later, but kind of waiting to see how the evolution words.

Class=Bloodrager: Abyssal Bloodline

Jakob is a solidly good guy, but there is darkness. Whatever it was they injected him with has produced some chilling changes in him. Now, when danger threatens, he can tap into his enhanced body chemistry to fuel a rage that makes him far stronger and tougher than he is ordinarily.

When he draws on it, his body actually changes. The bones in his fingers strengthen and sharpen, forming fierce talons.

(At 1st level, you grow claws while bloodraging. These claws are treated as natural weapons, allowing you to make two claw attacks as a full attack, using your full base attack bonus. These attacks deal 1d6 points of damage each (1d4 if you are Small) plus your Strength modifier. At 4th level, these claws are considered magic weapons for the purpose of overcoming damage resistance. At 8th level, the damage increases to 1d8 points (1d6 if you are Small). At 12th level, these claws become flaming weapons, which deal an additional 1d6 points of fire damage on a hit.)

As his control over this biochemical rage deepens, he finds he is able to cause even deeper changes in his body.

At 4th level, when entering a bloodrage, you can choose to grow one size category larger than your base size (as enlarge person) even if you aren't humanoid.

Spell choices would be examples of further control. Mostly self-buffs, possibly some attacks that could be explained a psychic manifestation of the dark, biochemical fury within him.

I'm really interested here. Will religion play any kind of role in this game?

I'm considering my stats, and I think I'm light on the str and con, but higher on dex and cha. My wis is middle of the road, but my int is above average. I've always been interested in wood working, and in particular bowyery. I'm thinking a ranged paladin with some crafting skills would be a nice fit. Kind of a Dale character. I know you said we don't have to play ourselves, but it really is a fun exercise.

(I don't imagine a paladin as being a champion of good necessarily in this setting, but more of the moral compass. Encouraging people to hold on to their humanity, and struggling to try and find out why God has allowed this and really wrestling with his existence.)

Here's my Alias. (Geriatric)

Points so far...

STR - 10
DEX - 12
CON - 10
INT - 12
WIS - 10
CHA - 13

Traits:
Friend in Everytown - Whether you are a traveling salesman, or have extended family spread across the country, it seems as though you know someone everywhere. Benefit: You gain a +1 trait bonus on all Knowledge (local) checks and Diplomacy checks. One of these skills (your choice) is always a class skill for you.

Trained Observer - You have had training as a security officer. It may be long hours and crappy pay but you have learned to pay close attention to your surroundings. Benefit: You gain a +1 trait bonus on Perception checks, and Perception is always a class skill for you.

Divine Artist
You are blessed with an artistic soul. Benefit: You gain a +1 trait bonus to one Perform skill, and Perform is always a class skill for you.

Drawback:
Forgetful
You are easily distracted and prone to forgetting important things.

Effect: Whenever you leave a location you have been at for longer than 1 hour, you must attempt a DC 10 Wisdom check. If you fail, you leave behind one random mundane item (a purse of money counts as an item

background:

Slightly overweight at what might as well be 200 pounds, and 5'9" with some grey showing in his close trimmed brown hair, Connor looks about as average as someone could expect. He's handsome enough, and was probably good looking 10 years ago when he was a young man in college like all of those around him now.

Connor has led a bit of a wandering life. Already entering his thirties he never really identified what it is that he wanted to do or be. He loved his hobbies, gaming of all sorts (especially RPG's) playing amateur sports, attending the renaissance faire (especially in costume), bowyery and reading novels. But he knew he would never make a career out of these things. His most recent job has been a success in some ways, he started as an entry level Security Guard at a new company. His ability to talk to people, and generally not screw things up got him promoted and eventually they put him behind a desk. His natural ability to work a room, and engage with people led him into a sales role. He has landed a few accounts here and there, but his heart was never in this for a future.

Connor has always been religious, he grew up in Texas where Southern Baptists seemed to fall from the trees, but his family had always attended a more liberal Lutheran church. He never thought he wanted to be a minister, but eventually his sunday mornings were all spent at the church playing guitar and leading music. He decided he would go to seminary, perhaps he didn't have to be a 'minister' he could just get paid to play cheesy worship music and work 3 days a week.

Connor found a college seminary that he wanted to attend in Georgia, and moved there to pursue his education. Unfortunately his meandering as a younger man meant that he had never finished a basic degree. So his first year would be spent finishing some undergrad studies at a smaller college in Toccoa. As an older student coming back, he struggled to make friends, that is, until he found a pathfinder group. He met them a couple of times and in short-order had established new friendships, was a group regular, and was having a great time.

He was so distracted by his studies and his friends, that he never caught on to what we were hearing in the news...

@Connor ~ Considering that TFC is a small Christian College, your backstory is perfect! Religious references are fine, so long as they are not intentionally offensive. I myself am a Christian, but I understand that this is a multicultural setting and a fictional world, so I'm up for whatever.

@Jakob ~ Sounds great, Part of the first ever TFC football team! (Seriously, we're tiny)

Zoey and Taru, glad you made it, strong concepts. Don't worry about feats, but I suppose the 3 skills for a commoner are fine since it'll help individualize you. no class skills except by traits though.

And everyone! Don't forget to pick a class feature to reflavor in your submission!

Alrighty. Endurance was just kind of a shot in the dark, as it represented one of the ~15 feats that I could see a commoner having. It was the most likely, as I usually am operating on my second wind while others are taking a break :P I'll get that edited once I get home.

@ GM ... attempted reflavoring a bit of the bloodrage, but it's pretty much just, hey, biochemical hulk/sorcery! Not sure if that's what you're looking for. Also, can adjust the background to better fit the college. I was just sort of using what I learned in Generic College Tropes 101.

Jakob that flavor was great, simple enough to work and still fit! And the town and college are somewhat malleable. I expect we'll have a football team soon anyway to jump to a C school, so thats not a stretch.

Remember all that Cybernetics or any other "super soldier" upgrades are also available, so long as it fits the sci-fi concept.

And Hotaru, you really won't need feats the first day, its not so much about will you survive but more about how you survive.

Hope these help! :)

This in Nohwear after making an actual char. I am not sure what else I need to do.

Reflavored'Lay On Hands':

By maintaining brief contact, a Paladin can release a programmed virus which is able to restore the damaged nerves and blood vessels of themselves or an ally. Some Paladins are even able to treat additional afflictions and impairments with this ability.

Source:

Lay On Hands (Su): Beginning at 2nd level, a paladin can heal wounds (her own or those of others) by touch. Each day she can use this ability a number of times equal to 1/2 her paladin level plus her Charisma modifier. With one use of this ability, a paladin can heal 1d6 hit points of damage for every two paladin levels she possesses. Using this ability is a standard action, unless the paladin targets herself, in which case it is a swift action. Despite the name of this ability, a paladin only needs one free hand to use this ability.

@GM
I'm used to using what fate gives.
So I'm very adaptable using what I get.

Though I have to ask when you finish the stat building will everyone have the same point-buy?

Stat Array:

That seems like a long recruiting period, given that we've got 5+ submissions already.

Dark Archive

Whoops, forgot about this. Too many campaigns to write/co-write/edit. Will bring up an alias later.

Reflavor of Woodland Stride:

Woodland Stride (Ex): A slayer with this talent may move through any sort of undergrowth (such as natural thorns, briars, overgrown areas, and similar terrain) at his normal speed and without taking damage or suffering any other impairment. Terrain that is enchanted or magically manipulated to impede motion still affects the slayer as normal.

Flavored into armored or leather pants that deflect most weathering possible tech shoes depending on how sci fi you want

Yeah Connor its a bit long but I have to do some work on it before we begin.

Excited as I am for this to start, I think a long recruitment period is generally a good thing. Not everyone checks the recruitment board every day, and especially a nonstandard game like this wants a little thought before beginning. My thoughts only.

Plus, there were a ton of folks in the other thread who waited patiently. :P Pushing past them having time to hop in is totally a thing we should avoid.

Precisely on all counts. I intend to PM those from the previous thread this weekend if they haven't checked in by then.

-Posted with Wayfinder

I hope I didn't come off as snarky or anything. It was not my intention to push past others. It was more intended as an observation. In my experience, most recruitments don't last that long.

I will admit that due to this adventure's unusual nature, a longer recruitment is likely a boon for all involved.

Mmhmm. And I'm pretty impatient as well. I just like to hide it. :)

I think it's probably safer to say that a lot of it is also 'I won't be ready for two weeks, due to the work I'm putting into this.' I've totally been there. My RL group was always really pushy and the 'give me a few weeks' wound up being 'see you wednesday.'

Still here, Still hoping to be ready to start within a week or so, if I don't blow my own head off first. I'll be working on the things that make this game unique tonight, the ERD, or Experimental Rules Database. The ERD is going to change day to day, but won't have any major changes to the Pathfinder Mechanic.

I certainly welcome feedback and encourage you all to share your ideas on new mechanics. Hey maybe we can get the attention of someone important one day ;)

I smell DragonBall-Z Abridged References.

@GM
Though I have to ask when you finish the stat building will everyone have the same point-buy or will everyone be at different point-buys?

Ah yes, sorry I didn't reply sooner. Everyone will be fairly close to the Same point buy at most times. Since it is experimental, I will level things out after day one, then our stat progression after that (there will be quite a lot) will be mostly "one for one" but I will explain later.

I assume planning is going well.

Well enough, I was delayed a bit... I'll contact the good prospects soon

OK guys, Here's what's been going on. I am an Outdoor leadership Maor Here in Toccoa, and Yes it is as fun as it sounds. However, I have One real Senior level class required for my major, and it is an understatement to call it a doozie. The final project is due Monday, so I'm basically offline until then. However, I looked over the submissions and decided that those of you on this page make a fairly good team. Tentatively I want to ask Blut, Connor, Zoey, Taru, and Jakob If they're still around and interested in picking up next week.

Thanks for all the Submissions guys! I'll be sure to let all of you know if something comes up!

Still here, and still interested.

Same

Just hanging out.

Then Welcome to Toccoa :) Like I said. I don't officially exist until Monday. So yaknow.

That works for me. I'll likely be unable to post much this weekend.

Thanks for the invite!

Well I think I passed that ridiculous class... On to more Pathfinder! I'll Have Discussion opened in just a minute, and I just sent Jakob a message to see if he's still in. You five can post in discussion and we'll see how the party works out!
