Tomb of the Emperor Gods -- PbP

Game Master Tarren Dei

This PbP started with Entombed with the Pharaohs and continues with The Pact Stone Pyramid. Many of the characters travelled to Osirion after completing a PbP based on River into Darkness.

In the pipe:
Yes, Ovirid, I think that everyone is accounted for.

Fighter (Shield) 3 / Rogue 4

Tarren:
I don't know why, I just felt like we were missing someone. Besides, I think Korian gets paranoid when we have conversations in spoilers that he cannot read. And Ovirid, lacking in humor as he may be, finds that amusing. Who am I to deny him?

Ovirid:
Bien sur, mon ami. Ca, c'est très drôle.

Fighter (Shield) 3 / Rogue 4

Tarren:
Heh. Heureux que vous l'aimez. Non, je ne sais pas le français. Oui, j'ai triché. J'espère que c'est proche.

Sykala not being gaseous will move as swiftly as possible to Korian.

Sykala:
Keep things in spoilers. What is your full speed then?

Those in the pipe other than Sykala:
Sykala suddenly races off leaving you uncertain about which direction to head. You can assume that you should go straight for a while but when you get to an intersection you won't know way to go.

Korian:
Korian does not know that Sykala is moving as swiftly as possible.

Male Human Rogue 1/ Wizard 6 (but Drained 2 levels)

Korian & Jinx:

Realizing he is in trouble and not knowing when back up might arrive, the first thing the mage thinks is 'I have to get way from this $#%$@!' and he takes a step back, and gestures, shouting out loud "Teleport!" while what he actually does is turn himself invisible, then hiding himself as best he can under the circumstances.
Stealth: 1d20 + 50 ⇒ (7) + 50 = 57

OOC:

Round 2, Initiative 13
AC 17, HP 28/58

Korian and Jinx:
Completely ignoring Korian's attempt to use magic to hide himself, the woman steps forward 5 ft. and attacks again. "The world might find you more handsome, master," she says, "now that you could not be seen. I, however, am invulnerable to your charms."20 more points of damage.

Male Human Rogue 1/ Wizard 6 (but Drained 2 levels)

Korian & Jinx:

"Damn it! Stop attacking me!" Korian yells as he takes another step back and this time conjures a thick grease all over her blade
(Ref DC16 of drops it)

Round 2, Initiative 13
AC 17, HP 8/58
F/R/W 5/6/7
Buffs: Mage armor, Vanish 6 rounds
Effects: none

Korian and Jinx:
Reflex: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32 The woman attacks again. With each successful hit her appearance has taken on a less human and more wicked appearance. 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (12) + 15 = 271d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 301d8 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 141d8 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15You'll want to stick around despite this apparent setback. I think Sykala would probably be able to get there this round, so we'll pause after this to see what she's up to.

All:
Once again, a triumphant voice echoes through your minds.

Infernal speakers only:
"Twenty-six!!"

Male Human Rogue 1/ Wizard 6 (but Drained 2 levels)

Korian & Jinx:

Ok Doke

Tarren:

Spoiler:
Just how long are these little tunnels? Guess I was under the impression the chambers were only a couple of rounds apart. Sykala will pause at the intersection so they can see which way she goes. I was thinking we might have already passed the point of the split.

Sykala:
They are going at a speed of 10 ft. per round. It will take them 16 rounds to get there. You, however, can go faster than that. (With a speed of 20 ft. per round, I believe, you can run at 80 ft. and make it there in 2 rounds if you do not stop. You will need to decide which you do.

Tarren:

Spoiler:
Ok, but how far are they still from being able to see the split?

Tarren:

Spoiler:
After thinking about it a moment. She realizes it is going to take them far to much time. She quickly scratches an arrow at the intersection pointing to the direction she is going and moves at full speed to Korian. So my previous question is moot (16 rounds is waaaay to long for her to wait for them).

Sykala:
Yeah, I figured it was.Sykala emerges from the stone of the pyramid into the chamber where she left Korian. She does not see him but she sees a woman's form. A pair of tattered wings are folded back tightly on her thin back. A sheath for a long sword hangs between the folded wings. The blade is bloody. She has not seen Sykala yet.

Korian:
I think your body will remain invisible until the duration of the spell (5 rounds) passes even after you die, right?

Male Human Rogue 1/ Wizard 6 (but Drained 2 levels)

Korian:

That's a good question. I'm inclined to agree with you, but I'm not sure. But as it's not a spell that needs concentration, I'll have to say yes, it will remain so. How many rounds have gone by so far?

Korian:
Two full rounds, I think, since you cast it in the second round. So, your corpse will reappear soon.

Ovirid:
It's right as far as I can tell. I'm working on my French each day but am still a beginner.

Fighter (Shield) 3 / Rogue 4

Tarren:
Ah - for all I know, you are bilingual. I had to use an online translator - my second language, if you can call it that, was the result of Spanish classes many years ago. I know enough to recognize several languages when I see them, but rarely enough to puzzle them out unless they have a lot in common with my native English or Spanish.

Tarren:

Spoiler:
Seeing the bloody blade Sykala assumes the woman has attacked Korian but he seems to have escaped. She will try and keep herself as hidden as possible and look for any signs as to where Korian ran off too (or of Jinx). She will stay right in the entrance of the small tunnel so she can back off while keeping the woman in view if need be. Perception: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (6) + 15 = 21

Korian and Jinx:
Where's Jinx?

Sykala:
You mean the pipe? It's smaller than Sykala, so she would have to stay in the rock around the pipe. (That's what I figure you have been doing so far.) You'll still need to make a Stealth check even if you are hiding in the rock. The woman could still hear you gliding through the rock.

Tarren:

Spoiler:
Yes, the pipe is what I meant. She really needs to put some points into stealth as I use it enough. Stealth: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 Well, it looks like I am very loud

Sykala:
The woman comes running toward you full tilt with her sword drawn, ready to stab it into the wall you are hiding in. Beat her initiative to act first: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20

Male Human Rogue 1/ Wizard 6 (but Drained 2 levels)

Korian:

'pop!'

Hiding under Korian's corpse? So full cover? Which he knew where it was from scent?

Tarren:

Spoiler:
Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19 Ooooooh, sooo close! Well, hopefully I at get cover from the situation.

Sykala:
The woman, whose infernal appearance suggests to Sykala she is not of nature born, runs forward, her sword scraping the ceiling. Sparks fly as she attempts to find the earth elemental hiding within the stone. The blade catches in a crevice and twists out of her hand.I rolled a 1 and then confirmed the fumble.

Tarren:

Spoiler:
Whoo, lucky for me! :) Would it be possible to pull the now unattended blade further into the pipe and out of her reach? If she can, then she will do that (I think it's a move equivalent action to grab something) and retreat 5' feet while intoning a prayer to Gozreh (Summon Natures Ally IV to summon tiger but it is a full round action). Where are you Korian?! as she quickly dismisses the idea of sealing off the pipe entirely probably trapping him with the infernal woman.

Sykala:
The blade caught on the stone but did not stick there. It twisted out of her hand and fell to the ground. You can cast a summons if you like but she will have a chance to try to interrupt it.

Tarren:

Spoiler:
Since it is on the floor can I cast stone shape and encase it in stone? That spell is only a standard action.

Fighter (Shield) 3 / Rogue 4

Tarren:
It appears we have stopped at the intersection. Can Ovirid move through the others in gaseous form? Can he see if there is a marking at the intersection of some kind? If he sees a line and a circle like Sykala mentioned, he will follow the path marked with the line.

Sykala:
That sounds fine. Kind of cinematically cool too.

Those in the pipe:
Unfortunately, we are in an odd situation. As gaseous form has such a slow fly speed, a lot can happen--and has happened--down below. Hold on for a bit more.

Tarren:

Spoiler:
Great, she does it then :) I only say this just in case you were waiting for me.

Sykala:
When Sykala reshapes the stone of the floor, the woman attempts to retrieve her sword but screams in rage. What does Sykala do?

Tarren:

Spoiler:
She will move through the stone to the opposite side of the chamber and begin her prayer for Summon Natures Ally IV (Tiger). She will re-emerge next round upon completion of the spell. Having no idea where Korian is she is just trying to distract the devil woman while the rest of her companions show up. Well, that and kill her....lol

Sykala:
The woman, frustrated at her inability to remove the stone charges toward Sykala again but disappears with a puff of ashy smoke and whiff of sulphur. Her sword remains behind. An instant later, the corpse of Korian appears on the floor.

Tarren:

Spoiler:
Like she didn't intend too disappear? Like a summoned creature maybe? All the same, Sykala will finish summoning the tiger and have it see if it can track the woman with it's scent ability before approaching Korian. You said corpse. Is it plainly obvious than that he is dead? If the tiger detects nothing Sykala will approach Korian to see what happened to him.

[ooc]The tiger can't track her. It did seem she didn't intend to disappear. The tiger finds Korian though. The smell of blood excites the beast. Korian is very obviously dead.[/spoiler]

Tarren:

Spoiler:
Sykala will place the tiger on guard at the corridors and wait for the rest of the group to arrive. As she does so she looks for Jinx.

Welcome back all ...

As the rest of the party emerges from the pipe, they see Korian's corpse lying on the floor. A blood soaked Jinx peaks out from underneath his companion's body. A sword you haven't seen before lies on the ground, wrapped in a swirl of stone that springs up from the floor like a gigantic wave. You cannot see anyone who might have caused Korian's injuries.

Fighter (Shield) 3 / Rogue 4

Do we see Sykala? I assume we are still in gaseous form. Are there exits to this room?

This room is covered with miniature colored tiles in an intricate design. You've seen enough ancient Osirion hieroglyphics to recognize the tiles as writing something.

Those who read Ancient Osirion:
The writing is so fluid that it takes you a minute to take it all in but you finally decipher the names for the four pharaohs woven into each other and over each other in different colors.

The pool is dry.

There are two exits from this foyer. One narrow corridor to the west and one wider corridor to the east.

Do they see Sykala? I assume she's out in the open, not hiding in the stone. She said she was waiting for you so I guess she's waiting exposed.

Finally something to post again

Ixius is shocked to see the resourceful wizard slain. He looks around trying to get an idea of what happened.

Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31
Also casting detect magic

"I guess that scroll is gonna come in handy already"

Does Refina have it?

Female Human Cleric 7

Refina assumes physical form once again

"Right here." She begins to use the scroll

Yes, Sykala's small stony form hovers protectively over Korian and Jinx. She can't for the life of her figure out how to explain what happened until she changes back from elemental form but does not do so yet.

I am guessing my tiger has already disappeared when they arrive. It lasted 7 rounds.
