The Wolves' Den

Game Master dreamingdragon

Four strangers at an inn in a remote village stand on the brink of adventure.

The Wolves Den

Northeast of the City of Hope, the Padure River flows through its broad valley, gathering the streams of the Silbatic Hills. Isfera is the last important town, and beyond it, the hills grow rougher, the forest deeper, and the farms smaller and farther apart. This is the land of the so-called Goblin Lords, those men who had been granted land and titles after the victory at Cold River. They had been young and ambitious then, the younger sons of powerful lords who stood to inherit nothing, but had fought like demons for their king and been rewarded.

The Caprioara River flows into the Padure here, and cuts a deep valley into the mountains. The ancient Floare Road winds west towards the mountains. North of the road, the only paths are rough dirt tracks too narrow for wagons. There are still tiny settlements, but the Awakening is a dim candle here. It is said that the mountain people are as much in darkness as in light, and that they keep to older ways in many things.

Along one path that winds through the mountains is a small settlement build around an ancient inn called the Wolves Den. It is known that it stood since the Age of the Magi, hundreds of years ago. Some even say that it is the place where the Wolf King of the Kubellin met with Vasli after the Awakening, and formed the plans that ended the Nightmare Age. The inn serves no wine, but is famed for hot spring water and the sweet, dark mead they brew.

This is where the story begins.

character creation:

* No 3PP
* 1st level
* CRB Races
* CRB, APG, UM classes EXCEPT Summoners. Most paizo archetypes accepted, if it’s in the SRD.
* 2 traits, from different categories
* 15 point buy
* Average Starting Wealth by class
* Not looking for heavily optimized characters.
* No Evil characters or disruptive players. This includes Lawful Stupid, Chaotic Sociopath and Neutral Jaded.
* For those classes that are affected by such things (clerics, inquisitors, oracles) use the standard PF pantheon.
Please note that I do understand this is a low powered party compared to what you may be used to. I’m not trying to be stingy, I’m trying to tweak the difficulty of the adventure to be challenging to a variety of power levels.

Fluff:

Since this is a non-Golarion adventure, details of your backstory will necessarily be sketchy. However, I do want to know more about the characters than the numbers tell, so:
* You are at a remote inn, in the near endless northern forest, at the distant edge of civilization. What are you doing there?
* What does your character contribute to the party in a fight?
* What does your character contribute to the party out of a fight?
* What do you think about the rumors of black magic and nightmare cults on the rise?
* Briefly, tell us about your character’s personality.
* Will you be able to post at least daily?

Shadow Lodge

I either would like to be a black-blade magus or a witch.

* You are at a remote inn, in the near endless northern forest, at the distant edge of civilization. What are you doing there?

I was drawn here my a mystic omen

* What does your character contribute to the party in a fight?
. as a witch i would be a debuffer.
. as a magus a mixture of spells and combat

* What does your character contribute to the party out of a fight?
. Witch- knowledge of nature, magic, and planes.
. Magus same as the witch

* What do you think about the rumors of black magic and nightmare cults on the rise?

I believe them for I have poof.

* Briefly, tell us about your character’s personality.
. Witch-naive and scared
. Magus-Grim and driven

* Will you be able to post at least daily?
yes.

I'm submitting a Human Ranger (Falconer archetype). He was in another campaign that died, so I know that I'll have to tweak his stats a bit. In terms of backstory, if you've seen "Ladyhawke", you'll have the general idea.

* You are at a remote inn, in the near endless northern forest, at the distant edge of civilization. What are you doing there?
Etienne's heard rumors of a powerful woodland mystic who might be able to cure his companion.

* What does your character contribute to the party in a fight?
Etienne's a skilled archer.

* What does your character contribute to the party out of a fight?
Knowledge of life in the wilderness, hunting and tracking, woodland guide, etc.

* What do you think about the rumors of black magic and nightmare cults on the rise?
Etienne's run into the cult before; it's the reason he now travels with a hawk instead of a beautiful woman.

* Briefly, tell us about your character’s personality.
Serious and quiet, Etienne keeps to himself. He'll talk if he has something to contribute to a discussion and is friendly, but he isn't interested in pointless chitchat.

* Will you be able to post at least daily?
Yes

I want to submit a melee druid, I'll have to tweak his stats a bit as well. Actually coming from the same dead campaign as Etienne. Originally an Ape Shaman archetype for a Jungle campaign, however will make him a Bear, Wolf, Boar or Serpent Shaman to be in tune with the environment.

* You are at a remote inn, in the near endless northern forest, at the distant edge of civilization. What are you doing there?
Rufon has lived his life mostly on the edge of civilization, living on the forest's edge to be more one with nature. If both he and Etienne get picked, he followed him to help him with his quest after becoming friends after their first encounter

* What does your character contribute to the party in a fight?
Dealing damage and combat maneuvers together with his animal companion

* What does your character contribute to the party out of a fight?
Knowledge about nature, climbing skills and alertness + animal sentry.

* What do you think about the rumors of black magic and nightmare cults on the rise?
Rufon has once met a cultist in the woods, he wasn't impressed. He believes nature will resist these foul magics and he will make sure it will.

* Briefly, tell us about your character’s personality.
Gruff and blunt, but honest. Rufon sometimes acts like a dumb brute but he has a strong feeling of justice and fights for oppressed people.

* Will you be able to post at least daily?
Yes

Good to see you again Rufon. We can definitely make the backstories work if we're both picked.

I'd be interesting in joining, if you have the room. Was hoping to make a half-elf sorcerer (would be my first spell-type character). If that's alright, I can create him pretty quickly.

Catman: Either sounds fine.

Rufon and Etienne: yes, you both need to tweak your character sheets. But you know that.

Rajun: there is plenty of room.

Pathfinder Rulebook Subscriber

I'm interested in submitting a Zen Archer Monk. I'm still working on the crunch, but here's my initial response to the "fluff" you've requested.

* You are at a remote inn, in the near endless northern forest, at the distant edge of civilization. What are you doing there?
Thanh Zhao has been sent to the region to seek the wisdom of a mystic, ancient monk supposedly in the area.

* What does your character contribute to the party in a fight?
He will provide significant ranged support through his flurry of arrows and to a lesser extend will serve as a light-tank distraction for some of his squishier peers - eventually.

* What does your character contribute to the party out of a fight?
High perception and stealth to assist with scouting duties. He won't be much help in interpersonal, knowledge or crafting tasks.

* What do you think about the rumors of black magic and nightmare cults on the rise?
Thanh has heard the rumors, but as he has just arrived to the region, he hasn't given them much thought - he doesn't doubt that such cults exist, but they are irrelevant to the task he is focused on.

* Briefly, tell us about your character’s personality.
He is quiet and contemplative, but when he does speak, it's often in blunt, no-nonsense terms - this often comes across as rude. He has never been formally educated, having lived his entire life in a secluded monastic order of Irori. He has a strong practical knowledge of the world and people.

* Will you be able to post at least daily?
Yes

I'll try to get some crunch put together early tomorrow (the 15-buy is brutal!). In the meantime, let me know if you have any questions!

Submitting a Human Bard (Detective)

* You are at a remote inn, in the near endless northern forest, at the distant edge of civilization. What are you doing there?
-I am here to investigate the Black Magic and Cultist

* What does your character contribute to the party in a fight?
-Minor buffs/Debuffs, Secondary Melee/Ranged attacks

* What does your character contribute to the party out of a fight?
-Trap finding, out of combat buffing, Skills

* What do you think about the rumors of black magic and nightmare cults on the rise?
-Being well versed in such investigations in the cities of the empire he will be skeptical of the hicks in the sticks, but not to the point of being easily caught off guard.

* Briefly, tell us about your character’s personality.
-He is outgoing as it always easier to get information with a smile than a dagger. Happy to play the good cop opposite a bad cop, he often gravitates toward the muscle and helps keep him check. Teamwork is paramount to success in his mind. Quips and humor are a way of life for him, but there are times when a eerie darkness pervades in is manner. Trusted with getting the job done, he does not fail.

* Will you be able to post at least daily?
Yes. Sometimes more sometimes less, but almost always one good one.

Etienne's stats have been updated. Let me know if you need anything else or have any questions/comments/suggestions.

I would like to submit Artor, a dwarven shield and melee ranger, capable of holding the front line in a fight and putting down his foes with his axe, who is skilled in trap making, hunting and minor alchemies. He is mainly interested in making enough money to return to his homeland and setting up a herbalism and alchemy shop but is quite willing to work with others to increase his odds of succes. He belives that such a cult may exist and would like to prevent them from harming his hunting grounds.

OOC, i can post at least once a day.

Tallgrass & Bilbo & Artor: Thanks, looking forward to seeing the characters.

Etienne: Looks good.

So far we have:

Etienne, falconer ranger, archery (done)
Tallgrass, Zen archer monk, archery
Artor, Sword and Board ranger, melee
Rufon, Ape Shaman Druid, melee
Bilbo, bard, buffer/debuffer
catperson, something
Rajun, sorcerer

Alright, all set to go! All these questions are answered from the POV of my character.

* You are at a remote inn, in the near endless northern forest, at the distant edge of civilization. What are you doing there?

The call of adventure, mostly. I've heard various tales about the lands this far north, and wanted to go see it. The history of the place as well is quite intriguing. I just wanted to travel here to say that I could, spend a few days, write about what I saw/experienced, that sort of thing.

* What does your character contribute to the party in a fight?

Essentially, making sure that the main fighters have an easier time. Put people to sleep, make their strengh go down, all that good stuff.

* What does your character contribute to the party out of a fight?

Interpersonal relations. Need to get past a guard, smooth-talk an official, basicly get things done with words that you can't with swords and sorcery? I'm your guy.

* What do you think about the rumors of black magic and nightmare cults on the rise?

Rumors are often founded on some basis in truth, but I'm sure it's not as out and out rampant as some have made it out to be. I'll bet a gold piece that it just turns out to be a bunch of know-nothing wizards who do it mostly to look intimidating and impress women.

* Briefly, tell us about your character’s personality.

I'm a traveller. Have been for the longest time. Parents were both entertainers for a travelling show, Dad the elf, mom the human. I like to write about my travels a bit, just recording events and my thoughts on them. I like to really LIVE life, have a good time. Enjoy myself. And if I happen to have a few friends around to enjoy it with, well, all the better then! I'm fairly social and enjoy meeting new people.

* Will you be able to post at least daily?
Absolutely!

If there's anything else I need to fill out, please let me know!

Duraelo: Looks good overall, but check your skills, which seem a bit high, and as best I can tell, you have 9 too many feats for first level.

I'm working on a character. Thinking a half-orc with a spiked chain, who fights out of anger towards those who opress.

The Wolves Den wrote:
Duraelo: Looks good overall, but check your skills, which seem a bit high, and as best I can tell, you have 9 too many feats for first level.

My mistake, will fix that in a bit.

Ok, got the feats fixed. The whole "Bonus Feats" was a bit confusing, but I've got it covered. Everything should be in order.

fluff:

* You are at a remote inn, in the near endless northern forest, at the distant edge of civilization. What are you doing there?
Sjora was drawn to The Wolves Den by an oracular vision of some brooding malevolence.
* What does your character contribute to the party in a fight?
With her iron weapon mystery and lead blades spell, she can do quite a bit of damage, and she can heal.
* What does your character contribute to the party out of a fight? diplomacy, healing, and the ability to disable traps and open locks.
* What do you think about the rumors of black magic and nightmare cults on the rise?
Sjora believes such rumors might have merit, given the vision she had that led her to this place.
* Briefly, tell us about your character’s personality.
Sjora tends to see the good in people and is open and friendly until people prove themselves to be bad folk in some way. She learned a lot from her family growing up about merchanting and haggling, and is an excellent negotiator. Talking out differences is far preferable to her than just jumping in with a fight initially. She loves to talk. Even just chatting and learning about new people and new places is a source of great joy.
She is highly protective of those she calls friend and will use her abilities with weapons to guard anyone in her circle.
* Will you be able to post at least daily?
I am retired, and easily able to post at least once a day and usually more frequently, if that's allowed.

Now there is a healer to add to the list of potential characters :)

Duraelo wrote:

I knew there was a method to the madness.

Sjora wrote:

Looks good:

You won't get the lead blades spell til 2nd level. That still leaves you hitting pretty hard at 1st.
I'm missing something with your AC. (I see +4 armor, +1 dex, +1 dodge=16)

sorry - miscalculated the ac... thanks for the heads up on that... fixed the AC and the spell - she was originally statted up at 3rd lvl for another game, and had to 'delevel' her to apply here.

Etienne, falconer ranger, archery (done)
Duraelo, sorcerer (done)
Sjora, oracle (done with ?s)

Tallgrass, Zen archer monk, archery
Artor, Sword and Board ranger, melee
Rufon, Ape Shaman Druid, melee
Bilbo, bard, buffer/debuffer
catperson, something
jdkle309, half orc with a chain

Sjora wrote:

It's ok.

That's why I check things over.

See you all tomorrow.

Rufon should be fine now, let me know if anything's not in order

Rufon - looks good

I've created Thanh and given him a bit of a back story. Both may be found in the alias.

Let me know if you notice anything amiss. Thanks!

TZ - looks good to me.

So we have:
Etienne, falconer ranger, archery (done)
Duraelo, sorcerer (done)
Sjora, oracle (done)
Thanh Zhao, Zen archer monk (done)
Rufon, Ape Shaman Druid, melee (done)

Artor, Sword and Board ranger, melee
Bilbo, bard, buffer/debuffer
catperson, something

@DM
What is the forest like? a temperate forest I take it? What sort of animals live in it?

This is just flavour question, because I want to fit my companion into the environment as much as possible.
This will not impact my character that much, changing his archetype accordingly. Also I forgot that Power Attack is unavailable to me now, BAB +1 requirement, I'll change it to Toughness.

Good catch on Power Attack. I'm sure it would have occurred to me eventually.

And by all means, ask questions, I realize there's much about this world that you don't know. It's a temperate to sub-arctic forest with mountains, so think Montana/Canadian Rockies, or mountainous areas of northern New England, southern Scandinavia, northern Japan, etc.

So (looking at the list of ACs on the CRB) - definitely bears, boars wolves, big/small cats, badgers, birds, dogs, etc. Non-CRB ACs would also include rams, moose and elk. On Earth, the big apes are pretty confined to the tropics, but I don't see any particular reason why we can't have a snow ape if you want to be an ape shaman rather than some other flavor.

So, TWD, just a quick question... when does recruitment close and how many applicants are you actually taking for the game? When do you plan on starting the game?

@TWD
Thanks for the info, this puts me in a tough spot to choose from them.
I regularly opt to choose something different than big cats as they feel a bit stereotypical, however seeing the setting with a Siberian tiger or mountain lion sounds real nice. The other good choice is a grizlly bear, also related to my build.

Also the snow ape tends to make me think of a fluffed sasquatch or bigfoot, sounds also sweet.

I'll probably change my archetype to Lion Shaman with a fluffed Siberian Tiger instead of a Lion if that is okay with you.

Silver Crusade

Here is the magus.

Anbidian: Looks good.

Rufon: I was thinking more or less the same, a kind of bigfoot/yeti thing. But the Siberian Tiger Shaman works just as well.

Sjora: Starting the game when recruitment closes. :P And that'll be soon. I want to give the others who expressed an interest a chance to get their characters made, and see if another day or so brings out some more interesting applications.

It'll be a four person party, and I'm pondering whether or not to run two groups, since there are 9 people who've expressed interest, and it gives the adventure twice as much testing.

If the purpose of this is mostly for testing and the like, I would agree that running two groups would make the most sense. However, just be sure that you're up for it. I'm amazed most people are able to DM an RPG in the first place, the whole practice seems beyond me. Running two at the same time, even if they're the same basic adventure, would blow my mind.

Do whatever would work best for you!

I will need to bow out as I have been picked up in another campaign. Thanks for the look.

I can have the character done later tonight, would favoured enemy animal or magical beast be better suited to this campaign?

Bilbo ... understood ... and thanks.
Duraelo ... sound advice, and definitely worth thinking on. I'd probably stagger the starts if I were to do two seperate groups, just to see.
Artor ... tough to say. I'd probably take Magic Beasts, myself. Though you will see more animals overall, the MBs tend to be more dangerous.

Artor has been updated, I used the ultimate equipment guide for purchasing my gear assuming that is not a problem.

http://www.dndsheets.net/view.php?id=50186

Background:

The wind was cold and wild the day of his conception; a tattooed faced woman lay beatened, bruised, and helpless under her green skinned captor, her gaze clouded and vapid as she is raped upon a bear skin mat. There was much less comfort in her enslavement though the fates called her back home when blood thirsty and vengeful warriors from the Kuwailo Clan (They Who Bear Fangs in Druidic) exacted true revenge upon the orc pillagers and drove them from their forests indefinitely. Asterak grew in his mother's desecrated womb as the clan clashed spear and shield against their foe, eventually scattering the orc horde from their lands.

Despite their victory, the offspring that came from the orcs' seed was not greeted with open arms. Asterak's human mother Weyu cared for the child, the tribe avoiding as much contact with him as possible. The half orc quickly learned that he was not welcome and ran away when he was only a child, cursing them and crying helplessly as he tried to fend for himself. He fashioned a makeshift spear and spear fished for two moon cycles before he encountered the broad shouldered and well-seasoned Kuwailo shaman Taroak. He was shocked by the child's insurmountable knack at survival and slowly persuaded him to return to the clan.

Now under his wing, Asterak was given training as a hunter though he proved to be rather clumsy in the ways of the javelin and bow. In one hunt, he ended up chasing down a deer when others thought the game to be lost. He had returned to the clan an hour later with the carcass on his shoulders and his bloodied spear acting as a walking stick for the journey home. Taroak made his pupil dead lift large game like moose over his head and wrestle among other things such as navigating the forest, spotting game, and how to interact with nature.

His renown in action was equally matched with his deep, commanding voice and stern gaze that made his brethren shake. Asterak understood what had to be done during a hunt, even more so during wars with other clans. As time went on and Asterak grew stronger, his peers began to fall in line with the self-sufficient savage, a few begrudgingly admitting that he was amazing at his craft. Never boasting and always keeping aware of what others said, Asterak became influential and even inspiring on the hunting grounds.

With age came love, and Asterak grew more and more attached to a druid in training named Akuva. The tomboyish prankster and the burly misfit grew closer together, Akuva's sympathy for Asterak's past and Asterak's undying loyalty to the only close friend he ever had set into motion a strong friendship that many wondered would become more than that. Asterak volunteered to be her personal guardian as was customary for the clan to assign bodyguards to their shamans.

At last he had come of age, becoming a fully recognized member of the Kuwailo Clan. Tasked with protecting Akuva in all of her training and endeavors, Asterak finally felt at home with his clan, empowered by the respect he had gained through his hard work. But all that changed when whispers of cultists arose, about how druids on spiritual journeys and hunters gathering game went completely missing. But nothing prepared the half orc for what happened to Akuka: she had been abducted from her tent, her tracks quickly running cold just outside of the Wolf's Den.

Rage, duty, wanderlust, and even more rage flood the young half orc's mind as he sets off on his journey to the Wolf's Den. Just as he had disappeared when he was a child, he seeks to bring back Akuva or walk away from his tribe forever, unable to bear the shame of losing the one he was bound to guard...and the one he loved most dear.

* You are at a remote inn, in the near endless northern forest, at the distant edge of civilization. What are you doing there?
The elders spoke of this place. They told me greedy and foolish men gathered here and sought great things. I need great men to bring back my love.

* What does your character contribute to the party in a fight?
Bwah, hah, hah, hah, hah, hah! I've chased elk when the hunt seemed lost, survived the dawn of winter with nothing but a carved spear, and I've the power to kill with my bear hands.

* What does your character contribute to the party out of a fight?
City folk don't like me much. That's fine; they'll remember me when I come back hauling a whole spearful of fish on a cold winter's night. Or maybe they'll remember the guy who can drag a dwarf wrapped in metal from a mighty river. The rangers are competent, but are they as in tune to the wilds as me? I think not.

* What do you think about the rumors of black magic and nightmare cults on the rise?
They have Akuva. I'm here to kill them. Enough said.

* Briefly, tell us about your character’s personality.
A man aware of his prowess, he does not take 'no' very well and isn't opposed to beating a man within an inch of his life to teach him a lesson. Despite his savage tactics, his voice is deep and commanding, the half orc is influential and strives to inspire whoever he is with to accomplish whatever goals he may have or perhaps to right a perceived (and often wicked) slight or wrong. He demands respect, and if questioned or challenged, he shows no fear and does whatever he can to earn that respect. A mutinous group is nothing more than meat walking into the mouth of a lion.

He has his curiosities about the outside world though he is perceptive; perhaps he does not understand yet, but he can empathize with others and feels a deep connection to all living things. He does not kill unless it is to survive or punish a crime that can only be absolved through death. He does not tolerate the weak and challenges whoever he meets to adapt and survive.

* Will you be able to post at least daily?
Yes

Dotting for interest. Wont get a character up until later tomorrow. It is bed time for now.

Asterak: looks good, but could I trouble you to put your character info into your profile, or at least link to it?

TMS sweet dreams

Is this still open and what classes do you already have?

@ BBP I have enough to make up two parties. I'm going to be getting started soon, but feel free to throw something up if you want to be considered.

There is also a pretty good chance that, depending on time constraints, I'll be running a second group.

Etienne, falconer ranger, archery (done)
Duraelo, sorcerer (done)
Sjora, oracle (done)
Thanh Zhao, Zen archer monk (done)
Rufon, Ape Shaman Druid, melee (done)
Artor, Sword and Board ranger, melee
Anbidian, Magus
Asterak, Barbarian

jdkle309, half orc with a chain

Name: Judeau

Judeau grew up in a house with a General for a father and tyrannical mother. His father started training him for combat at a young age, working on speed and agility and reaction times. As Judeau got older training shifted towards the focus of sword fighting and tactics. Judeau easily understood the tactical parts of his training, but the swords and other weapons, he just never had the strength to do much damage with them, and he would constantly leave himself open as he attacked earning punishment from his father. One session left him with two nice scars on his face because his father was so angry with his shortcomings.

While Judeau's father was extremely focused on the physical aspect of his growth, his mother was the complete opposite in one aspect, magic. She was always having him study every moment she was able to. Teaching him all the ways magic could be used. This was slightly better for Judeau since he was a smart boy but still he hated the lack of freedom his family imparted on him.

After one grueling night of him mother looming over him and correcting his writing technique Judeau had enough. He yelled at his mother and stormed off. Later that week both of his parents called him into the office, he knew it was bad when ever they both wanted to talk to him. Long story short, they kicked him out of the house for being ungrateful of their training and that others would kill to be in his shoes right now. They allowed him to gather a few of his things before he left and off he went into the world to make it on his own.

Several months of wandering have left him very bitter and he is unsympathetic to any he meets believing his life to be much worse than any of theirs. He is very brazen when he talks and has very little tact as well, this usually leads people to start throwing punches but his training has made it relatively easy for him to get out of these situations.
Judeau has just come to the edge of the norther forest after hearing about the black magic and wants to investigate it (he is Neutral and is very objective, not evil). The danger is of no matter to him as he bleives he can easily handle himself in wild. This also satisfies his other goal of putting as much distance as he can between those he angered and his family. At least no one knows who is he out here, perhaps he can start fresh.

Since Judeau is very smart and tactically minded his specializes in battle field control, summons, buffs, and debuffs mostly. Outside of a fight he has several utility spells at his disposal.

I'll create an alias and get all my gear sorted out if I get picked but today has been very busy at work and tomorrow is likely to be as well, but I'll be for sure ready if I get picked.

Updated.

Asterak and TMS, looking good.

I've looked over all the submissions and chewed it over quite a bit. It's tough to choose a group, but it has to be done.

I invite Etienne, Rufon, Sjora and Duraelo to join me in the discussion thread in the next 24 hours.

The others will have priority if I do start a second group.

I am preparing the first map (tricky for me, but necessary) and getting all my stuff in order. Should be ready to go by tomorrow AM, depending on spousal and professional interference.

Understood. Yay, invite to the discussion thread! This is going to be fun!
